#9 New orders for durable goods in the United States fell by a whopping 13.2 percent in August.

What I see the past half year is people trading down when they need a new car. Best example is a neighbour whose Audi Q5 lease term expired. He now leases a Hyundai i40 station. Such a car costs half compared to the Audi.

Is this taken into account in the statistics?

The following sentence from the article is remarkable and hints at fiddling with the numbers:

“Orders for July were revised down to show a 3.3 percent increase instead of the previously reported 4.1 percent gain.”
