20 Signs That The World Could Be Headed For An Economic Apocalypse In 2012

If you thought that 2011 was a bad year for the world economy, just wait until you see what happens in 2012.  The U.S. and Europe are both dealing with unprecedented debt problems, the financial markets are flailing about wildly, austerity programs are being implemented all over the globe, prices on basics such as food are soaring and a lot of consumers are flat out scared right now.  Many analysts now fear that a “perfect storm” could be brewing and that we could actually be headed for an economic apocalypse in 2012.  Hopefully that will not happen.  Hopefully our leaders can keep the global economy from completely falling apart.  But right now, things don’t look good.  After a period of relative stability, things are starting to become unglued once again.  The next major financial panic could literally happen at any time.  Sadly, if we do see an economic apocalypse in 2012, it won’t be the wealthy that suffer the most.  It will be the poor, the unemployed, the homeless and the hungry that feel the most pain.

The following are 20 signs that we could be headed for an economic apocalypse in 2012….

#1 Back in 2008 we saw major rioting around the world due to soaring food prices, and now global food prices are on the rise again.  Global food prices in July were 33 percent higher than they were one year ago.  Price increases for staples such as maize (up 84 percent), sugar (up 62 percent) and wheat (up 55 percent) are absolutely devastating poverty-stricken communities all over the planet.  For example, one expert is warning that 800,000 children living in the Horn of Africa could die during this current famine.

#2 The producer price index in the U.S. has increased at an annual rate of at least 7.0% for the last three months in a row.  We are starting to see huge price increases all over the place.  For example, Starbucks recently jacked up the price of a bag of coffee by 17 percent.  If inflation keeps accelerating like this we could be facing some very serious problems by the time 2012 rolls around.

#3 The U.S. “Misery Index” (unemployment plus inflation) recently hit a 28 year high and many believe that it is going to go much, much higher.

#4 Jared Bernstein, the former chief economist for Vice President Joe Biden, says that the unemployment rate in this country will not go below 8% before the 2012 election.  In fact, Bernstein says that “the most optimistic forecast would be for about eight-and-a-half percent.”

#5 Working class jobs in the United States continue to disappear at an alarming rate.  Back in 1967, 97 percent of men with a high school degree between the ages of 30 and 50 had jobs.  Today, that figure is 76 percent.

#6 There are all kinds of indications that U.S. economic growth is about to slow down even further.  For example, pre-orders for Christmas toys from China are way down this year.

#7 One recent survey found that 9 out of 10 U.S. workers do not expect their wages to keep up with the rising cost of basics such as food and gasoline over the next year.

#8 U.S. consumer confidence is now at its lowest level in 30 years.

#9 Today, an all-time record 45.8 million Americans are on food stamps.  It is almost inconceivable that the largest economy on earth could have so many people dependent on the government for food.

#10 As the economy crumbles, we are also witnessing the fabric of society beginning to come apart.  The recent flash mob crimes that we are starting to see all over America are just one example of this.

#11 Some desperate Americans are already stealing anything that they can get their hands on.  For example, according to the American Kennel Club, dog thefts are up 32 percent this year.

#12 Small businesses all over the United States are having a really difficult time getting loans right now.  Perhaps if the Federal Reserve was not paying banks not to make loans things would be different.

#13 The U.S. national debt is like a giant boulder that our economy must constantly carry around on its back, and it is growing by billions of dollars every single day.  Right now the debt of the federal government is $14,592,242,215,641.90.  It has gone up by nearly 4 trillion dollars since Barack Obama took office.  S&P has already stripped the U.S. of its AAA credit rating, and more downgrades are certain to come if the U.S. does not get its act together.

#14 Tensions between the United States and China are rising again.  A new opinion piece on is calling for the Chinese government to use its holdings of U.S. debt as a “financial weapon” against the United States if the U.S. follows through with a plan to sell more arms to Taiwan.  The U.S. and China are the two biggest economies in the world, so any trouble between them would mean economic trouble for the rest of the globe as well.

#15 Most state and local governments in the U.S. are deep in debt and flat broke.  Many of them are slashing jobs at a feverish pace.  According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, state and local governments have eliminated more than half a million jobs since August 2008.  UBS Investment Research is projecting that state and local governments in the U.S. will cut 450,000 more jobs by the end of 2012.  How those jobs will be replaced is anyone’s guess.

#16 The U.S. dollar continues to get weaker and weaker.  This is renewing calls for a new global currency to be created to replace the U.S. dollar as the reserve currency of the world.

#17 The European sovereign debt crisis continues to get worse.  Countries like Portugal, Italy and Greece are on the verge of an economic apocalypse.  All of the financial problems in Europe are even beginning to affect the core European nations.  For example, German industrial production declined by 1.1% in June.  There are all kinds of signs that the economy of Europe is slowing down and is heading for a recession.  French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel are proposing that a new “economic government” for Europe be set up to oversee this debt crisis, but nothing that the Europeans have tried so far has done much to solve things.

#18 The Federal Reserve is so desperate to bring some sort of stability to financial markets that it has stated that it will likely keep interest rates near zero all the way until mid-2013.  The Federal Reserve is operating in “panic mode” almost constantly now and they are almost out of ammunition.  So what is going to happen when the real trouble starts?

#19 Central banks around the world certainly seem to be preparing for something.  According to the World Gold Council, central banks around the globe purchased more gold during the first half of 2011 than they did all of last year.

#20 Often perception very much influences reality. One recent survey found that 48 percent of Americans believe that it is likely that another great Depression will begin within the next 12 months.  If people expect that a depression is coming and they quit spending money that actually increases the chance that an economic downturn will occur.

There is already a tremendous amount of economic pain on the streets of America, but unfortunately it looks like things may get even worse in 2012.

The once great economic machine that was handed down to us by our forefathers is falling to pieces all around us and we are in debt up to our eyeballs.  The consequences of our bad economic decisions are hurting some of the most vulnerable members of our society the most.

It is a crying shame what is happening out there on the streets of America today.

      Nothing is more exciting then a drastic change to our tedious way of life. No one truly enjoys the doldrums of getting up for work, only to come home, eat, sleep and do it all over again 5 days a week. “yikes”
      Everyone does love and is anticipating huge change in the way of life!

      But the scenario you paint is quite horrific, people surviving by their own morals or lack of. Only the strong would survive in your Mad Max world which would be comprised mostly of the undesirables that have already have been locked up for rape, theft and murder.
      The government would be destroyed, the rich would be taken to the streets and beaten to death including their wives and children.
      Poor and sick would be rounded up and slaughtered.
      Your Evil empire would arise in the Mad Max world.
      Not sure that’s what most people want.
      What would be refreshing for most would be a realistic approach, debt wiped out and an affordable approach to life where no one is rich and no one is poor. Everyone works for the better of society, no more 15 million dollar bonuses for corporate elite and their stinking rich family, no more sports players making obscene money to kick footballs around.

      A new economy where Everyone is sharing all the world equally.

It is only possible to envision utopian communism in ones mind, it cannot be a real approach unless everyone pulls their equal amount……And just in case you havent come to the realization yet let me spell it out for you. We have a population with a high density of obeise slugs content with over eating and working part time or not at all…..Stop living in a fantasy land and open your eyes.

          It is possible to make the world where there are no poor or rich but where everyone is equal. A world without children dying everyday from starvation. A world with ABUNDANCE. We live in a monetary economy where all means of production are to make profit. Which creates making products as cheap as possible to stay relevant and in business. So all things are made not to last or to become obsolete in a year so the company can sell you something new, stay in business and make more profit. Business equals= SCARCITY, because if there was abundance then a business couldn’t make profit. It would be impossible to do so. So all the conservatives that think everything should be based of making money are wrong. Socialism isn’t a bad thing. Hospitals shouldn’t be based on making profit, they should be based on helping people. The reality is nothing should be based on making profit. Things should be made with quality to last so we don’t waste so much.

          So you say that the world couldn’t exist without money. But really the world is fucked up because of money. Money is the single cause of poverty and poverty is the single cause of all crime. Because with poverty comes poor education and doing what they can to survive in this monetary world.
          You see the reason the united states has a 9% unemployment is because of technology. Because the world is based off making profit machines replace people’s jobs everyday because they are more efficient and make more profit. Technology hurts our worlds economy because of that reason. We are getting to the point where machines can do surgery better than a human could ever dream of doing.

          So what happens when machines virtually replace all labor jobs in the world because they they make more profit then labor workers? (Which will happen) Un-employment will be so high that people will realize that this isn’t working, that there has to be a change.
          The Economic Apocalypse is going to happen just to prove that we have to change the way we treat and operate the world.

          So you ask WHAT IS THE ANSWER?
          The answer my friends is to make the world a Resource based economy instead of a Monetary economy. A world with ABUNDANCE instead of scarcity. Which means there would be no money. Imagine a world where everyone has food to eat everyday, everyone has clean water, everyone has energy, everyone has a source of transportation, everyone has a home, and everyone is HAPPY. All material objects are made to last with quality and if a object becomes obsolete then it is made so you can upgrade it to become relevant or if a part brakes you can just replace that part instead of getting a entire new device. A world where 90% of all jobs are done by machine. A world where we take care of our mother earth instead of destroying it. This is the world of the future and most likely will never be in our live times but our future is going to be what makes it become this way.

          So in a world where only 10% of the population actually has a job you are going to tell me that everyone will become fat and lazy and not have any motives. But the reality is that people would have different motives. Instead of grinding 60 hours a week just to survive people will have a passion to create. If your passion was to paint wouldn’t you want to share your painting with the world. I your passion was to create video games wouldn’t you make a video game with the most care and quality not making it for profit but making it and caring for it as your baby. Money holds the intelligence of man kind back because in this monetary system we have to spend billions of dollars for research in any field. And there is a limit in the amount of money provided so there is a limit in the amount of knowledge discovered. Now I am not saying it would be a perfect world because we it is impossible to reach perfection but it would be a trillion times better than the way we do things now.
          The top 1% controls 40% of the worlds wealth. They are the ones with all the power and they are the ones who benefit from how the world is. 50% of the worlds population makes less than $2 a day.

          I could keep on going but I am going to stop. I know there are some holes in what I said which will make people challenge what I said but I will answer any questions asked. There is a lot more you need to know but the information above is a slight over view of this subject in mind (economic apocalypse). Become educated on this matter and spread the word. We the people have control to make a change. Lets take these fascist out of power and bring the power to the people.

          You came to this site for a reason. Whether its because you saw a ad or it is something with more meaning is what you make of it. But know that there is no such thing as a coincidence.

            Im sorry I left out a couple things I wanted to say above. There is a billion more things you should know but this is all I will say in a short comment (not so short). But I will keep this quick.

            Homo sapiens are animals no more than any other species. Sure we have created to adapt to our environments for example making weapons, tools, and clothing instead of waiting to evolve millions of years to adapt like ever other species. But we are animals (omnivores). We still kill our food to survive like all other animals. Who is to say a humans life is anymore valuable than any other species because its not. Just because we are on the top of the food chain we dominate the world and abuse it. We treat mother earth, our home like shit. We treat all life on our earth like shit including each other. All other species have more of a right to inhabitant this planet more than we do because they respect our earth and don’t abuse it.
            People say killing is wrong but the reality is that if we didn’t kill we couldn’t survive, which makes us animals. Just animals that don’t give a fuck about how our earth is treated.

            So this is how we will evolve above being an animal. Today we are able to make a kidney from blank stem cells. In a year we will be able to create a liver from blank stem cells. In 20 years we will be at a point where we can completely create animal meat from blank stem cells. Thats right the biggest, baddest, most juicy, sterile, tasty steaks you could imagine. So we will evolve to where we don’t kill (sorry hunters =p ). Now someone is going to say there will still be murders and people that just love to kill. But over a period of time there wouldn’t be and this is why. Psychologist have proven that almost all of the hardcore extremely violent murders had a situation in there childhood where they where almost murdered violently themselves or saw there family get murdered. Which effected them severely and caused them to cope and adapt in a strange way. In a resource based economy there would be no poverty which would mean there would be almost no crime which would mean eventually there would be no murders. There would be no laws. Thats right NO LAWS. A law isn’t made to fix a problem. Instead of going to the source of the problem and resolving the issue our government just makes a law for the problem. Here are a couple of examples:
            -We have the technology that can prevent all car accidents. There wouldn’t be a law that says you can’t drunk drive=p. Cars are capable of driving themselves and if a car is about to hit another car we have technology with magnets to stop the engine of the car and prevent the car from getting so close to the car it was about to hit and would be a chain reaction with all cars behind them.
            -Instead of making a law for no robbery make it so there is no need to rob another person. By having a resource based economy that would be the solution to robbery because everyone would have everything they need.
            Those are just a couple examples but you get the point.

            We need to treat the earth better, be more efficient on space that we use, acknowledge that we have a limited amount of natural resources, and use clean renewable energy resources. We could easily power the entire world from geo thermal energy alone. But we also have wind, solar, ocean current, and ocean waves as other sources of clean renewable energy. There isn’t a single political party that acknowledges that we have a limited amount of natural resources (POLITICS IS FUCKING STUPID). We need to strategically plan the amount of resources we will use for a certain period of time and how long it will take to replace said resources. You would think we do that now but we do nothing along those lines. Instead we take more and more and more and destroy ecosystems while in the process.

            Whoops I said more than I meant to I need to stop. Eh I will say one more thing. These huge corporations like walmart, general electric, google, and facebook (didn’t capitalize for disrespect) having larger economy’s then almost all country’s in the world. Corporations like walmart hurt the economy by eliminating mom and pop shops for there own economic gain.
            This isn’t how the world should be we should no better than this. Its up to you, the people to make a difference.

            Payton – I enjoyed reading your posts. You make a lot of valid points. I think in order for that future to take place, a major reset would have to take effect.

            People are naturally greedy and selfish to a degree. But like you said, if their is no need to be greedy, then people won’t act greedy.

            People by nature also desire power. Money brings power (or makes it more attainable). The elites and oligarchy all have plenty of $. They can retire right now and live a fantasy life without hassle. The thing is, they don’t. This is because they want more power. It is addicting. Can we change this mentality? I don’t know.

            I’m usually don’t like bringing prophecies into reality, but I honestly believe we are nearing Armageddon mentioned in the Bible. It will be a nuclear war. Afterwards, the resource society you mention will only be lead by a higher being (whatever religion you follow) because humans cannot maintain their desire of power.

            Again, great points Payton. I enjoyed reading it. Maybe one day we can attain that world. I believe a reset by WWIII and a major destruction by the earth will have to occur.

Just so you know the United States has forms of socialism. What do you think that the bailout with the banks in 2008 was? It was socialism to its core. The U.S. owns 60% of General Motors. That is socialism and nationalism. So before you make a dumb ass comment commenting about how my comment is stupid, become educated on the subject.
            And if you are telling me that poverty and money isn’t the cause of 95% of crime (at least not in advanced economies???) then what is? You didn’t back up your statement you just said it. What’s your logic? (Because mommy said so)

            Almost every country has a form of socialism. Medicare and Social Security is socialism. In the U.S. socialism exist for the rich and the poor. Democracy has a lot of socialism. I wasn’t suggesting full fledge marxism just that a form of socialism isn’t a bad thing in a monetary system. And the bank bailout in 2008 proved that the economy can’t simple rely on business. But in a resource based economy there is no need for any politics what so ever. Don’t take what I said out of context.

They are the ones that control the world and the only way that we are going to be able to change the world is we have to trick them.     Some well known economist/trend forecasters are predicting by 2012, billions, not millions but, billions worldwide will be unemployed, left homeless and starving.
    How scary is that?

      Go to a public library with free WiFi.
      Lots of people there. Many of them are checking job listings on employment websites.
      They no longer have laptops or smart phones. Couldn’t afford them after they got laid off.
      That’s how they are “getting around” without paying for AT&T, Verizon, TGen and Sprint. Those services got disconnected when they didn’t have the money to pay the bill.

They’re stockpiling cash. Don’t say you weren’t warned. The IMF sees a new collapse sweeping across the planet. Open your eyes. You’re not watching a film. This is not a metaphor. Plan now for the revolution, class warfare, market crash, economic collapse, plan for another depression.

      I often find that I agree with your posts, but not this one. People who are in dire straits today are mostly (not always) in such circumstances because they made bad choices along the way and they did not anticipate changes, easily observed by others, in the economy.

        Bad choices are made by everyone everyday, some with little or no consequence, called low risk decisions, example; purchasing a crumy shirt from Walmart that shrinks after one wash, or purchasing a lottery ticket with little or no chance of ever winning.

    This we have brought upon ourselves. We all wanted low cost imported junk in order to live a lifestyle beyond our means. We exported all our jobs. We can’t get out of this mess without a lot of pain. Let’s just get on with the repair of the economy and work towards a better future.     So let me understand something from the video and what was written in earlier articles: feeding the homeless, especially with your own money, is a crime? That translates to me that it is illegal to be a G-d fearing, Bible following, Humanity-loving person. It is essentially illegal to be a Jew or Christian that cares about his fellow man.

So it didn’t take her long to decide that she’d rather have a high-paying job in Colombia than be painfully underemployed in the BRA. But understandably, she was nervous about living in a city with as much crime, desperation and hardcore poverty as Bogotá—and I told her that yes, she will need to take precautions. Kidnapping is quite common in Colombia and other Latin American countries, where the poor and the desperate collect what I call The Desperate People Doing Desperate Things Tax (DPDDTT). The DPDDTT isn’t really a tax, but rather, includes kidnapping, carjacking, violent home invasions and other things that desperate people do to alleviate their misery and suffering. Europe, in contrast, doesn’t have DPDDTT (well, maybe in Napoli), but that’s the difference between developed countries that have a middle class and Third World countries that don’t—the latter can be extremely dangerous and unstable.

The Rothschilds took over the entire London Stock Exchange in 1815, as Napoleon was about to lose the Battle of Waterloo. This may have been the single most important event in the history of the Rothschild Family Banking Dynasty. Prior to this, crypto-“Jew” or Marrano “Jew”, Ignatius Loyola created the “Society of Jesus”, or the Jesuits, between 1534 and late 1540, when it went into operation.     I’ve included some links, just as EXAMPLES – I think it’s good to do
    a little research, find the best quality and price – and Buy American-
    made, as much as possible…

    1) Food is second to water, and never forget it. WATER. Rationing is a
    must for both Water and Food.
    – Make sure you have one pot dedicated to boiling water.
    – Water purification tablets will work, but be sure to follow directions.
    – A small water purification unit works as well as boiling does.
    – If in your home, and have no running water – there are “Dolphin air2water” devices ( that extract drinking water right out of the air. As a last resort – you can drink water right out of the toilet “tank”. Be careful of mold around fixtures. One tank of water should last for approx. 2 days for 2 people. In the greater outdoors – find a way to collect (and purify?) rainwater…
    – “Air2water” devices need to be kept sanitary/clean, before use, as well, to avoid ingesting any mold!

    2) FOOD. Dry or Freeze Dried food is best.
    – Mountain House is a popular brand for storeable canned food items.
    – Get a couple boxes of MREs. They are great sources of calories and
    one meal can last for 2-3 days. (A person CAN survive for 3-4 weeks
    without food – not recommended – but, no two people are exactly, the same.) Ration as or where possible.
    – Get a good book on edible plants (native to the region you’ll be ‘exploring’).
    – Some foods may be eaten raw, however, cooking is always preferred.
    Refrain from eating pork, chicken, or ground beef, raw. Some suggest
    using a small Coleman stove/grill that is powered by a small propane
    tank. My only question is – what will you do, when you run out of small
    propane tanks? ( No fuel needed, except Sun-light! Remember, it won’t be bright and sunny every day, so have an alternative for those days. Insects and larvae are a source of protein. One rule of thumb: if you can’t identify it – don’t eat it. Some insects can make you very sick, and/or kill you.
    – If you are the game-hunter-type: Get a book on field-dressing animals.
    – Salt.

    3) First Aid Kit. Be sure to have a ‘top notch’ first aid kit.
    – It should contain sterile bandages, anti-biotic cream, burn cream, anti-bacterial wipes, insect repellant (citronella is a good, natural anti-wood-tick/deer-tick item), or NEEM oil repellant, insect bite (and/or snake bite) kit, aspirin or non-aspirin (acetominophen), sewing kit/thread/needles, sharp scissors, etc. Get a knife/scissors blade-sharpener.
    – Make sure you have at least 60 days of vital, necessary medicines (such
    as insulin, or aspirin, etc.), and/or vitamin supplements.
    – Get a good book on home remedies.

    4) Toiletries: toothpaste, toothbrush, shaver, shave cream/soap, anti-bacterial soap, deoderant, shampoo, haircut scissors, comb, skin lotion, lip balm, sunscreen, etc.
    Also: Think hearing protection, safety/sun glasses, N95 or similar (respiratory) masks.

    5) Clothing.
    – Be sure to have both warm, and cold weather gear.
    – Be sure to have rain-waterproof gear. (Boots, gloves, rain-suit w/hoodie, etc.)
    – Durable, and long-lasting clothing is best, especially in terms of work boots, jeans, shirts. (I like Duluth Trading Co. – most of their stuff is imported, though :~(
    – Sewing kit, 35mm film case, with extra boot/shoe laces.
    – Waterproof/rain-proof poncho(s).

    6) Shelter.
    – Obviously, a durable water/rain-proof tent, large enough to house the
    required number of people, and sturdy enough to withstand high winds, rain. ‘Bath-tub’ bottom, separate ‘rainfly’, aluminum poles.

    7) Bedding and linen.
    – Make sure your bed is OFF the ground (ie, cot with mat, and sleeping bag, or air mattress, bed-stand, or hammock, etc.)
    – make sure you have a safe, effective way to clean your clothes and
    bedding/linen. This prevents ‘bed-bugs’, insect infestation and/or disease.

    8) Lighting.
    – Some say propane lanterns are best. I say solar-powered or hand-crank lanterns are best.
    The more self-reliant you can be, the better. I wouldn’t rely on propane…
    – Flashlight(s). An absolute necessity, when there’s a power failure, during
    a storm, or electrical outage. A durable, aircraft-grade aluminum LED flash- light, with long-lasting (common-sized) batteries, is recommended. Also, a hand-crank flashlight, or a shake-light flashlight is handy. With all
    battery-powered tools, re-chargeable batteries are the key. You have to
    have an alternate source of power, to re-charge your re-chargeable batteries. (Solar-powered battery-chargers, is one example: Also, a ‘tactical’ flash-light, that has a dis-orienting ‘strobe’ effect feature, is good for self-defense.
    – Having said all of that (about flashlights) – a ‘head-lamp’ is even better – because putting the light, on your forehead, frees your hands for other necessary work.
    – The most reliable source of light (and cooking) is fire (candles, fireplace), if you have a place to find wood, or fuel for a fire, and a place to safely burn.
    – Fire needs a source of ignition, such as a Brunton Waterproof Stormproof Lighter.
    It operates on butane, however, but is small, durable, good up to 30,000
    ignitions)(1,000 before needing a refill)… Otherwise, keep water-proof matches and some bic lighters in abundance. Bic lighters work for about 4 months, but break easily. Be sure to blow out candles when not in use, or there’s no one around to monitor them, or before falling asleep. There is a solar-powered fire-starter, however – go to: and scroll down to the bottom of the page. Of course, there are other, less expensive ways to start a fire, without matches or a lighter: – you’ll just need a magnifying glass.

    9) Power. Generators are good, but not necessary.
    – A DC power-inverter will (supposedly) power just about anything in your house. It will work, but only as long as you have ‘juice’ in the car battery. Remember, the old-time pioneers lived by fireplace-light, and/or candle-light. We can, too. For warmth in the winter – there’s always warm (fleece) clothing and bedding, absent electricity. Solar-powered generators that are compatible with and operate vital, necessary equipment, such as an “air2water” device – may be the best option, for power outages. Store enough water for cloudy days…

    10) Personal defense accessories/self-protection.
    – Non-lethal – pepper spray. For women – you can get it, in a lipstick-like container.
    (This is a clever way for women to protect themselves – by not alerting the
    potential attacker to a more obvious cannister of pepper spray)
    – Non-lethal – stun gun. Is another option.
    – A hand-crank NOAA weather radio is a must, for power outages, due to storm conditions.
    – Knives. A person should consider having minimum of 3 durable, and very sharp knives in their possession, at all times (during a camping or survival situation). Buck knives are very popular, and likely the best. Also, have a knife-sharpener, that doesn’t take a lot of the metal off the blade. You’ll want the knife to last as long as possible (even after the camping outing or survival situation is over).{end_use:%27O%27}
    – Warm clothing/bedding is vital, especially in cold environments, with no power.
    Fleece (undershirts and bed-covers) retains warmth, extremely well.
    – Consider small two-way radios with at least a two-mile range, for communicating with family members (not sure if they have these with rechargeable batteries).
    – If you opt for firearm(s) – for hunting or self-protection – make sure that you know how to fire, clean and store the firearm correctly and safely. Also, keep plenty of ammo for your weapon.

    11) Remember, take it easy on your-self. Don’t overwork for anything – ie, make sure the benefit outweighs the cost, as hiking/running requires A LOT of energy. Energy = Food. Avoid dangerous situations – trust your ‘gut’/instinct – it’s usually right.

    12) Tansportation. A 4×4 vehicle is obviously preferable to a conventional car.
    – A 4×4 can get you around/over debris, much more readily than a car, and
    is better, in more remote terrain. Or, a moped? Something electric? Bicycle? Hoof it?

    13) Get a good, durable, quality watch. (I like Timex, they ‘take a licking – and keep on ticking’!)

    14) What to do, if there’s no running water, in order to use the ‘rest-room’?
    – If outdoors, you can always have a small, folding, compact shovel, such as are used by the military:
    – In an urban environment, without access to an outdoor ‘port-o-potty’ or ‘port-o-let’ you’d absolutely, for sanitary and other reasons, have to find an alternative…such as sealable containers to stop bacteria or the buildup of bacteria…
    – X-tra TP…

    15) Other tools: Kershaw Camp Axe:
    Camp Saw (even better than an axe)
    Magnesium Fire Starter
    Duct tape: (made in usa)
    Trauma Pak w/QuickClot:
    Work gloves.

    16) Additionally, you’ll need to think about having:
    – identification
    – important documents (& something waterproof to keep them in)
    – minimum of $100 cash (small denominations – less change)
    – “smuggler’s belt” (made in usa)
    – large zip-lock (slider-lock) type “freezer” bags/disposable
    – thumb-drive in a small, waterproof container
    – chewing gum – no aspartame
    – pet?: emergency kit, water, food for your pet
    – entertainment: cards, book(s), puzzles, small, portable chess set…

    I have mixed feelings about the quoted sentences “Sadly, if we do see an economic apocalypse in 2012, it won’t be the wealthy that suffer the most. It will be the poor, the unemployed, the homeless and the hungry that feel the most pain.”

    If the economy TRULY collapsed, so that money becomes worthless… in many places the poor may actually be better off than those who are NOW rich. Why is that? For one thing, people who’ve lived with little to no money for many years have developed ways of coping and have knowledge of how to get by without.

    I know a number of people living in rural Maine who have not have a full time job (and part time jobs only seasonally) for the better part of the past 40 years. THOSE people did own a bit of land and had some kind of shelter, but know how to garden, hunt, fish, and gather and store food.

    I also have a brother in Deerborn, MI (of all horrible places to live) who is in his 50s and has never had a full time job (screwed up, what can I say?), yet he survives. When questioned recently by another family member said he isn’t at all worried because he knows how to live without money.

    I seem to recall in the last Great Depression (the one in the 30s), when the market collapsed it was mostly wealthy people committing suicide over “all” they lost. I do think however that currently middle class people (and especially young people), who have never in their lives wanted for things… will suffer as well.

    As to debt, I’m trying to pay off all mine, but in reality… I know you can’t bleed a turnip (no money, can’t take it from you). The truly poor, I think a lot of them know how to survive (more so in the country, less in cities). If you can figure out ways to get the basics (food, clothing, shelter) it’s possible to survive, although it may not always be fun.

    Have courage and a little faith… and remember, it ain’t over til the fat lady sings (OK, so I’m a fat lady, and I’m not singing)

I have alot of experience with dealing with disasters. My question to him is, when things get really really bad and survival of the fittest is paramount, meaning my life is on the line, what do you throw at the the people breaking in to my house to take what I’ve scrounged with what little money I have, insults? I wish people who talk about survival, arm chair survivalists I call them, have to dig in dumpsters or ask janitors of conference centers to save food left over from conferences, as I have, in order to eat!!!!! Theory is fine about survival. But the experience of being there and having to do it, when necessary, counts for more. The article is scary and I see it the way the writer sees it: things are going to get bad soon. The question is when that happens what will it take to survive? Forgot to tell you, don’t count on your cellphones or computers because most likely they won’t work because of EMP. If you don’t know what that is, look it up.

    My take on all of this and I never thought I would type this. The S&P downgrade plays right into the politicians hands. They are no longer to blame and Austerity is now coming to the good ole USA. The politicians will speak to the masses and state we must save the USA and you must sacrifice and they masses will love them for it. Taxes are now coming to all people not just the rich. They will speak even more and your 401k and savings will be sacrificed to them. That is if you have any money left.

    Both partie have wanted to break their contract with us anyway and they will not speak that we must cut entitlements to save our great country and they will cheer them for basically screwing us. After all it is to save the country from the evil S&P downgrade. The poor will now be paying taxes after all nothing will be sacred to save this country they will say. Everyone must pay.

    The middle class will be a thing of the past. Still that will not be enough they will speak and the masses will cheer them.

    All the while a barter and balckmarket system will replace the old system so people can eat. They will not be able to confiscate gold this time and they really do not care as they can outlaw using gold. My advise is to learn how to produce a tangible items to trade this time. that may be the only way you may survive.

    I have laughed my butt off reading many of the above posts. A few truths to consider.

    “He who has the gold, makes the rules”

    If you have gold, you can have anything you want, including food and hiring people with guns for protection.

    Someone posted that the rich were jumping out of the windows in 1929. This is false. The people jumping out of the windows were people who were deep in debt, and the market went against them and suddenly they found themselves broke.

    One of the silliest things written in here is the idea about filling your basement with M.R.E.s and waterproof matches. Don’t get me wrong, it is a good idea to keep on hand a year’s supply of food, but it should be food you want to eat. Each fall I put away a two year supply of corn and wheat. I do can and dry veggies for the next year, but I also have a bounty of food always growing in my garden. Other than salted cured pork, I don’t keep much meat in the pantry, as I have a pasture full of meat on the hoof. My heating system is wood, I keep on hand enough oil for my lamps for a year or two, plenty of fuel for stoves.

    When I was 14, we lost power for several days, we had a yard full of broken tree limbs and as my parents were wondering how we were going to have breakfast, I was busy building a fire and asked my Mom to go get her back iron skillet. Fixed a great breakfast that morning. Ever since, I have always known that I would be fine in any kind of collapse.

    Yes, the system needs to be flushed, and it will be painful, but if you know what you are doing, and are able to go back to doing what our greatgrandparents did, then you will be fine.

  • One of the best things you can do not to starve in the coming famine besides putting food by would be to learn how to identify wild edible plants. Also get seeds now, and even if you don’t have land, you can guerilla garden now for a fall harvest, and again next year. Find little bits of land here and there, and plant food that is not easily recognizable – i.e. potatoes instead of tomatoes – if you think people may steal the crop. Don’t worry too much about greens like spinach, because lambs quarter and purslane are plentiful edible weeds and lambs quarter is more nutritious than spinach. Although during winter you can raise greens indoors. Greens have protein. You will want carbs. Therefore this winter let some potatoes get eyes, and leave some sweet potatoes out till they make slips, and put them in the ground in the spring. You can start them in pots too. You may want beans. For that you need to get organic because non-organic beans have something sprayed on them to prevent sprouting. Don’t bother with soybeans. Soy is a terrible food. Or you can raise tilapia, rabbits or chickens indoors instead of or in addition to planting beans. Do research what rabbits like to eat. Chickens like grain, fruit and greens.

    It is just so upsetting to hear nothing but negativity. We know it’s bad. We are the smartest country in the world with the most loyal of people walking our country. We need to put our hearts together and fix it one day at a time. There is always tomorrow and we need to made changes now for each one of us to benefit from in the future. No more complaining, pay attention to who you vote for. Not because of the promises that they have to give but read their resumes. We vote on likability not responsibility. Take a moment and think about who you would hire to operate on your child; a really good experienced doctor or your neighbor cause you like him. It needs to stop and we have no one to blame but ourselves. We dropped the ball and cared more about plasmas and reality tv then real important decisions like who will lead us.

    In August, a young woman I know here in Philly accepted a high-paying job in Bogotá, Colombia. Although she had a degree from Temple University, she was working crappy dead-end, low-paying service jobs (not uncommon for today’s college graduates) and was buried in student loan debt. She spoke Spanish fluently as a second language, and it didn’t take her long to decide it would be much better to have a high-paying job in Colombia than be painfully underemployed in the BRA. Understandably, she was nervous about living in a city with as much crime, desperation and hardcore poverty as Bogotá—and I told her that yes, she would need to take precautions. Kidnapping is quite common in Colombia and other Latin American countries, where the poor and the desperate do desperate things. But I pointed out that the former USA is now a Third World banana republic—and it wasn’t as though she was still living in a developed country. As Gerald Celente has pointed out, this is the world’s first UN-developing country. The Temple grad grew up in a developed country, but thanks to The White Shoe Boys’ rape of the American middle class, the USA became the BRA and joined the Third World.

    And make no mistake: the BRA is a Third World hellhole. The Banana Republic of America has been in a depression since Sept. 2008, and this depression is going to deepen considerably. The pain, suffering and misery will only get worse……….and worse, and worse. We’re seriously screwed.

    I think that we all need to stop pointing fingers here and worry about the now. These people that are out on the streets/homeless may end up being your/our survival key if things do take a turn for the worst. Be thankful for what you have, as 2012 nears, that may change. And those who make alot of money, stop bickering and stop rubbing it in. Because you could very well be just like those who are out there trying to survive with no means of resources.       May be a mistake retiring from the bench due to our financial conditions but with crime going up, I could have stayed on the bench because I was making good money here in Rockville, Maryland and in Montgomery County. I had to retire due to my heart condition since I used to smoke and I smoked cigarettes for over 58 years and my doctor told me that the cigarettes that I bought needed to be tossed in the trash. He said that they will “end your career and put you in the grave” so I gave up smoking this past October. I had an ex-ray and my lungs are clean so far. God has saved my life, looking at it in retrospect. I may have to go back to active duty to deal with the rising crime in the local neighborhoods. We have a good police department here in Montgomery County, Maryland and it helps me as a Circuit Court Judge in courtroom three in the Judicial Center on Monroe Street right here in the Rockville district. I was making good money as a judge and I feel that I am healthy enough to go back to work as a judge!

A lot of people don’t have enough money to stock up…just do one or two cans at a time..figure out ways to make more with what you have,trade,work for things not money do whatever to prepare…sell things you really don’t need and get ready for another day that will make NOW look like a picnic.       First may I say, LOL Oh, Really? For 1, turning off your TV obviously doesn’t preclude moderate to heavy internet use including being a patron/fan of blogging.

That’s just paranoia, are you really afraid of anonym-ized data being provided to companies so that they can more efficiently provide products to meet demand, and target appropriate advertising? I see a possible problem if these companies were to be owned by major corporations focused on phasing out American products.

      So, before I review the rest, here is what I see as a realistic plan of action. personal economic Asceticism. America has become culturally adapted to getting what we want. And we want too much, and culturally are unwilling to adapt.
      1. Seriously would you be willing to stop using toilet paper in favor of a bidet (for those unfamiliar its a water spout used to clean… ahem)
      2. What about the minimum wage? Want to know why “Made in America” isn’t seen everywhere? We expect to be paid nearly ten times as much for the labor we perform as an individual in China would. Hence the economic (and perhaps right choice) would be to move the manufacturing jobs to where they will be done at the cost of what they are worth. Willing to part with your guaranteed higher wage to get product manufacturing back in America.
      2a. And why is the minimum wage so high? Cost of Living in America, which is based off of realistic expectations of electricity and fuel usage to create, package, and run our toys.

      Think about it a little, companies spend millions to determine what to put on your cereal box, how to package it to most entice you to buy it. This goes for all packaging, if you buy a pencil, it comes in plastic, attached with adhesive to a cardboard backing done in brightly colored industrial inks. Then all of that is disposed of (read trashed, recycled, whatever…) Now, take just a second to think about the necessary factory space needed to mass produce each of these components.

      The proportion of packaging to product is ridiculous. The only legitimate use of packaging? Preservation of product, and prevention of tampering. So why not create higher standards of tampering prevention for distribution points for non-perishables and make individual advertisement purposed packaging illegal. Force the companies to re-imagine how they sell something and do it more efficiently.

      The point of all this is that as a mass of individuals in America we have set unrealistic expectations originating in the optimistic capitalism from the 50’s to the 90’s.

      So by all means cut back on everything you don’t need. Re-purpose everything you can. Insist on economic responsibility from all levels of government, from personal, to municipal, federal, to global and any other form of governance in between.

      And be prepared for the economic collapse. Anyone who’s been to a Black Friday sale knows that the general public is not capable of letting go of petty wants.

      On Mark Patriots comments, Amen. Ron Paul? If you believe he has any realistic shot in this political business (complete with product placement and testimonials) then bravo to you. I have been following Mitt Romney’s campaign, and his political marketers… I mean supporters have caught on to the strategy that won Obama the last election. That is… treating the President as a marketable product. Realistically I believe he will be the end product of the GOP. It will take an economic collapse as devastating as the 1st Great Depression to shock the system of each individual to a wary, thinking state.

      A thought before I go, what we could really use is a law limiting the amount of candidates a political party can submit for office in the house or senate to a non-majority number, removing the capacity of a “Party” to control the legislative force of the nation. In other words, the parties would be forced to work together to get any law passed. Unfortunately this is unworkable because we would basically end up with Republican party A, party B, etc. and Democrat party A, B, etc.

    5. Make sure Ron Paul becomes the Republican nominee for president in 2012 and also replace Obama with a real choice such as Senator James Webb or former senator Russ Fiengold to run in his place. Then whoever wins will be a win for America and the world.

    I suggest that if you can’t afford it – don’t buy it. And if you’re in debt, start implementing that cash is king! Try to borrow from friends and family first and pay them interest – why pay interest to banks? If you’re in heavy debt arrange for debt settlement, if severe, declare bankruptcy and walk away. – And start small all over again!
    If we all did that, we can disable the banks, the economies, and every government. They key is that the consumer has to realize his/her collective power with the mass. Our artificial economies are designed to the enslave the middle class with easy credit and heavy taxes.
    Stay away from the doctors and drugs, stay in shape, and eat right. Leave unions that encourage laziness, and stop working for an employer that doesn’t even know you. Stop religion thumping while building bomb shelters in your backyards and stay away from guns. Loose your patriotic hatred and give with compassion to those you can help around you. Stop buying things you don’t need and save it to pay off more debts. Economic collapse is necessary especially in all the big global economies if we want a better planet.     With money problems, the jails, prisons and penitentiaries will be overcrowded and the corrections department staff will be in danger due to being short staffed and inmate populations expanding. The staff on duty, the more likely that some inmates will create an uprising and overpower the staff. As a judge, I had to deal with issues beyond human comprehension but this is the tip of the iceberg as to what is to come in the near future.

      Don’t throw stones if you live in a glass house. You talk about grammatical errors; look at your first and fourth sentences (not counting capitalization errors). That said, I am sure I have made a few. So let us not belittle others but talk about the issue(s) at hand.
      I agree with what you have said except for the age of computer technology bringing about doom. There is no doubt (at least in my mind and also many scientists) that the world will be hit by an asteroid or comet large enough to cause an extinction event. The time of the event is not known. Just a few years ago one passed between the earth and the moon. The scary thought is that it was not seen until about 3 days prior to when it would have impacted, had it been on a course to do so. So when they say 60% of the solor bodies have been cataloged I challenge them. If I take x number of buckets of sand and pebbles and scatter them in a 5 acre field how can they determine the percentage they will find when they do not know the x factor.
      My point is that humans need to get off this planet and start colonizing other planets and moons in our solar system and eventually in other galaxies and beyond. If we do not then span of human existance will be fairly short; in cosmic terms anyhow.
      To other points made by others I hope we will have learned what is really important prior to starting our exploration.

    I would rather store food and water than buy gold at the current prices. You can’t eat gold. Silver can be purchased at cheaper rates-even junk silver.
    Guns will be essential for personal protection. But they should be kept hidden so the military/police doesn’t get a hold of them like they did when katrina happened- where they disarmed honest citizens and left them defenseless against thugs and looters.
    Need to have items and skills for BARTERING because that may be the only way in the absence of currency.
    If more than half the population ends up homeless, including you and your family– for god’s sakes–don’t be in an open area. take your tent and car (if you still have one) and go into a FORESTED area away from civilization. You will be safer if you are hidden, and not exposed to military marshall law or the desperation of people-especially criminal element.
    Better hunting grounds in forested area as well. Small game and river/lake fishing–yum.
    Learn from your ancestors. Learn how to build a rustic shelter in the woods–with limited supplies.
    Learn how to set up a perimeter, in order to be warned of possible intruders.
    There are so many survival skills that you should be learning and teaching your kids.
    Did you know there are a whole host of plants that can treat ailments in the absence of pain killers and antibiotics? Get a picture book and familiarize yourself with these plants. Do you know what plants/berries etc that you can safely eat? Would you be able to identify it?
    Do you know you can make milk out of rice? Its called rice milk. Add a little sugar and it tastes just as delicious as regular milk.
