20 Things You Will Need To Survive When The Economy Collapses And The Next Great Depression Begins

Today, millions of Americans say that they believe that the United States is on the verge of a major economic collapse and will soon be entering another Great Depression.  But only a small percentage of those same people are prepared for that to happen.  The sad truth is that the vast majority of Americans would last little more than a month on what they have stored up in their homes.  Most of us are so used to running out to the supermarket or to Wal-Mart for whatever we need that we never even stop to consider what would happen if suddenly we were not able to do that.  Already the U.S. economy is starting to stumble about like a drunken frat boy.  All it would take for the entire U.S. to resemble New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina would be for a major war, a terror attack, a deadly pandemic or a massive natural disaster to strike at just the right time and push the teetering U.S. economy over the edge.  So just how would you survive if you suddenly could not rely on the huge international corporate giants to feed, clothe and supply you and your family?  Do you have a plan?

Unless you already live in a cave or you are a complete and total mindless follower of the establishment media, you should be able to see very clearly that our society is more vulnerable now than it ever has been.  This year there have been an unprecedented number of large earthquakes around the world and volcanoes all over the globe are awakening.  You can just take a look at what has happened in Haiti and in Iceland to see how devastating a natural disaster can be.  Not only that, but we have a world that is full of lunatics in positions of power, and if one of them decides to set off a nuclear, chemical or biological weapon in a major city it could paralyze an entire region.  War could erupt in the Middle East at literally any moment, and if it does the price of oil will double or triple (at least) and there is the possibility that much of the entire world could be drawn into the conflict.  Scientists tell us that a massive high-altitude EMP (electromagnetic pulse) blast could send large portions of the United States back to the stone age in an instant.  In addition, there is the constant threat that the outbreak of a major viral pandemic (such as what happened with the 1918 Spanish Flu) could kill tens of millions of people around the globe and paralyze the economies of the world.

But even without all of that, the truth is that the U.S. economy is going to collapse.  So just think of what will happen if one (or more) of those things does happen on top of all the economic problems that we are having.

Are you prepared?

The following is a list of 20 things you and your family will need to survive when the economy totally collapses and the next Great Depression begins....

#1) Storable Food

Food is going to instantly become one of the most valuable commodities in existence in the event of an economic collapse.  If you do not have food you are not going to survive.  Most American families could not last much longer than a month on what they have in their house right now.  So what about you?  If disaster struck right now, how long could you survive on what you have?  The truth is that we all need to start storing up food.  If you and your family run out of food, you will suddenly find yourselves competing with the hordes of hungry people who are looting the stores and roaming the streets looking for something to eat.

Of course you can grow your own food, but that is going to take time.  So you need to have enough food stored up until the food that you plant has time to grow.  But if you have not stored up any seeds you might as well forget it.  When the economy totally collapses, the remaining seeds will disappear very quickly.  So if you think that you are going to need seeds, now is the time to get them.

#2) Clean Water

Most people can survive for a number of weeks without food, but without water you will die in just a few days.  So where would you get water if the water suddenly stopped flowing out of your taps?  Do you have a plan?  Is there an abundant supply of clean water near your home? Would you be able to boil water if you need to?

Besides storing water and figuring out how you are going to gather water if society breaks down, another thing to consider is water purification tablets.  The water you are able to gather during a time of crisis may not be suitable for drinking.  So you may find that water purification tablets come in very, very handy.

#3) Shelter

You can't sleep on the streets, can you?  Well, some people will be able to get by living on the streets, but the vast majority of us will need some form of shelter to survive for long.  So what would you do if you and your family lost your home or suddenly were forced from your home?  Where would you go?

The best thing to do is to come up with several plans.  Do you have relatives that you can bunk with in case of emergency?  Do you own a tent and sleeping bags if you had to rough it?  If one day everything hits the fan and you and your family have to "bug out" somewhere, where would that be?  You need to have a plan.

#4) Warm Clothing

If you plan to survive for long in a nightmare economic situation, you are probably going to need some warm, functional clothing.  If you live in a cold climate, this is going to mean storing up plenty of blankets and cold weather clothes.  If you live in an area where it rains a lot, you will need to be sure to store up some rain gear.  If you think you may have to survive outdoors in an emergency situation, make sure that you and your family have something warm to put on your heads.  Someday after the economy has collapsed and people are scrambling to survive, a lot of folks are going to end up freezing to death.  In fact, in the coldest areas it is actually possible to freeze to death in your own home.  Don't let that happen to you.

#5) An Axe

Staying along the theme of staying warm, you may want to consider investing in a good axe.  In the event of a major emergency, gathering firewood will be a priority.  Without a good tool to cut the wood with that will be much more difficult.

#6) Lighters Or Matches

You will also want something to start a fire with.  If you can start a fire, you can cook food, you can boil water and you can stay warm.  So in a true emergency situation, how do you plan to start a fire?  By rubbing sticks together?  Now is the time to put away a supply of lighters or matches so that you will be prepared when you really need them.

In addition, you may want to consider storing up a good supply of candles.  Candles come in quite handy whenever the electricity goes out, and in the event of a long-term economic nightmare we will all see why our forefathers relied on candles so much.

#7) Hiking Boots Or Comfortable Shoes

When you ask most people to list things necessary for survival, this is not the first or the second thing that comes to mind.  But having hiking boots or very comfortable and functional shoes will be absolutely critical.  You may very well find yourself in a situation where you and your family must walk everywhere you want to go.  So how far do you think you will get in high heels?  You will want footwear that you would feel comfortable walking in for hours if necessary.  You will also want footwear that will last a long time, because when the economy truly collapses you may not be able to run out to the shoe store and get what you need at that point.

#8) A Flashlight And/Or Lantern

When the power goes off in your home, what is the first thing that you grab?  Just think about it.  A flashlight or a lantern of course.  In a major emergency, a flashlight or a lantern is going to be a necessity - especially if you need to go anywhere at night.

Solar powered or "crank style" flashlights or lanterns will probably be best during a long-term emergency.  If you have battery-powered units you will want to begin storing up lots and lots of batteries.

#9) A Radio

If a major crisis does hit the United States, what will you and your family want?  Among other things, you will all want to know what in the world is going on.  A radio can be an invaluable tool for keeping up with the news.

Once again, solar powered or "crank style" radios will probably work best for the long term.  A battery-powered until would work as well - but only for as long as your batteries are able to last.

#10) Communication Equipment

When things really hit the fan you are going to want to communicate with your family and friends.  You will also want to be able to contact an ambulance or law enforcement if necessary.  Having an emergency cell phone is great, but it may or may not work during a time of crisis.  The Internet also may or may not be available.  Be sure to have a plan (whether it be high-tech or low-tech) for staying in communication with others during a major emergency.

#11) A Swiss Army Knife

If you have ever owned a Swiss Army knife you probably already know how incredibly handy they can be.  It can be a very valuable and versatile tool.  In a true survival situation, a Swiss Army knife can literally do dozens of different things for you.  Make sure that you have at least one stored up for emergencies.

#12) Personal Hygiene Items

While these may not be absolute "essentials", the truth is that life will get very unpleasant very quickly without them.  For example, what would you do without toilet paper?  Just think about it.  Imagine that you just finished your last roll of toilet paper and now you can't get any more.  What would you do?

The truth is that soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, toilet paper and other hygiene products are things that we completely take for granted in society today.  So what would happen if we could not go out and buy them any longer?

#13) A First Aid Kit And Other Medical Supplies

One  a more serious note, you may not be able to access a hospital or a doctor during a major crisis.  In your survival supplies, be absolutely certain that you have a good first aid kit and any other medical supplies that you think you may need.

#14) Extra Gasoline

There may come a day when gasoline is rationed or is simply not available at all.  If that happens, how will you get around?  Be certain to have some extra gasoline stored away just in case you find yourself really needing to get somewhere someday.

#15) A Sewing Kit

If you were not able to run out and buy new clothes for you and your family, what would you do?  Well, you would want to repair the clothes that you have and make them last as long as possible.  Without a good sewing kit that will be very difficult to do.

#16) Self-Defense Equipment

Whether it is pepper spray to fend off wild animals or something more "robust" to fend off wild humans, millions of Americans will one day be thankful that they have something to defend themselves with.

#17) A Compass

In the event of a major emergency, you and your family may find yourselves having to be on the move.  If you are in a wilderness area, it will be very hard to tell what direction you are heading without a compass.  It is always a good idea to have at least one compass stored up.

#18) A Hiking Backpack

If you and your family suddenly have to "bug out", what will you carry all of your survival supplies in?  Having a good hiking backpack or "survival bag" for everyone in your family is extremely important.  If something happened in the city where you live and you suddenly had to "go", what would you put your most important stuff in?  How would you carry it all if you had to travel by foot?  These are very important things to think about.

#19) A Community

During a long-term crisis, it is those who are willing to work together that will have the best chance of making it.  Whether it is your family, your friends, a church or a local group of people that you know, make sure that you have some people that you can rely on and work together with in the event that everything hits the fan.  Loners are going to have a really hard time of surviving for long.

#20) A Backup Plan

Lastly, it is always, always, always important to have a backup plan for everything.

If someone comes in and steals all the food that you have stored up, what are you going to do?

If travel is restricted and your can't get to your "bug out" location immediately do you have a Plan B?

If you have built your house into an impregnable survival fortress but circumstances force you to leave do you have an alternate plan?

The truth is that crisis situations rarely unfold just as we envision.  It is important to be flexible and to be ready with backup plans when disaster strikes.

You don't want to end up like the folks in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.  You don't want to have to rely on the government to take care of you if something really bad happens.

Right now the U.S. strategic grain reserve contains only enough wheat to make half a loaf of bread for each of the approximately 300 million people in the United States.

How long do you think that is going to last?

Now is the time to get ready.

Now is the time to prepare.

The United States economy is going to collapse and incredibly hard times are coming.

Will you be able to survive when it happens?

  • simon

Why you need radio when there will no electricity to broadcast and everyone will eventually die?

  • MrPotato

I’m not sure I agree with community, look at “Children of Men”, that horde of homeless people setting up that burning-car trap will be your community, how do you feed that many people? not easy, there will be huge arguments over food/water.

I think the article would be more useful if it’s about pro’s and con’s, in this case there are definitely some pro’s of being a loner.

If you can assemble a good small team however is ofcourse much better than being completely alone, however that’s easier said than done, and most likely your team is going to be of lazy people who’s unprepared (debt, out of shape, no equiptment, no survival skills).

  • How does the economic collapse lead to a complete halt to all economic activity? More people may be poorer, but they will still have some money to motivate others to produce for a market. The natural disaster scenario seems more plausible for this type of warning. More and more foreclosures don’t. This posting is a bit much for me, seems just some much scaremongering.

  • Simon, you can use a hand crank radio that can pick up the NOAA emergency channel, citizen band radios that will work off cells etc. Check it out at SurvivorMall.com

  • Dana

How about firearms and plenty of ammo? What happens when the looting hordes arrive on your doorstep and you don’t have the means to defend yourself and your family?

  • Matt

Military will eventually come in and set up most basic needs – food, shelter, medical. You just need enough to hold you over until then.

  • Milton

Actually, I will start fires with two sticks. What will you do when you run out of matches?

  • Spencer

ok – you’ve officially fallen off the deep end. This blog went from legitimate economic concerns to grand fear mongering. This is the same as Y2K all over again. I have friends who still have bunkers and thousands of dollars of expired canned food and you’re suggesting they go do it again…..

  • I have no food, water, clothing or anything else for an emergency other than 7 rifles, 3 pistols and boxes of ammo.

I’ll just take what I want from all you responsible folks who plan ahead. Thanks in advance. Oh and I don’t like rice. Beans are better and have more protein.

  • diogene

People that are accusing the author of this article of fear mongering, your are doing that, just because of frustration. Supposedly, that will not happen (God forbid), BUT IF HAPPENS, then what? Are you prepared, or you will explain to your family that collapse was mathematically impossible, or you will wait for someone to help you? You will get the same kind of support, the people from New Orleans, or Haiti got.

You are pure morons and sheeple and behaving like ostrich, shoveling your head in sand and pretend nothing is happen. Ok, let’s say you will die quietly, because of lack of food and especially of water, accepting the fate that you were utterly stupid, but you, not, then you will suddenly discover that you are entitled to the food of those prepared, because your kids are not going to die of starvation! Yes, you will behave like this, you know, deep down, that you will do so; the preppers are knowing this and wait you “prepared”, be sure on that.

In case nothing happens, that’s it, you have some stuff that anyway you will need and consume, so what the fuss? But you are like same fools from Noah times, or those in the coming of the 1929 crisis, that they were laughing of those that were alert and prepared. Not laugh so more, after the flood came, or the ’29 crisis. So will you!

  • SgtFear85

If you want to know what it may very well look like when our own economy collapses, go to http://www.ferfal.blogspot.com Ferfal survived the Argentine economic collapse and has some very good insights on how to survive until things return to some sense of normalcy.

  • For Butch:

I’ve been a practicing Survivalist for several years, and also consult on the subject, in preparation for IDIOTS like you. Particularly after hearing some of my “fellow” Army Officers state that they would do the same as you.

Well, guess what? I have just a few firearms, with CASES of ammo, as well as being debt free, stocked with food, fuel, and fertile land. This also includes barbed and concertina wire, tripwired devices, etc.

  • Chops

    Hey Butch,

You’re the type of people that we “preppers” are preparing for. I’ll just add your “7 rifles, 3 pistols and boxes of ammo” to my arsenal.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Dianna

    Hey Butch.
    Seems as though
you have a few fans. Has it ever occurred to you to be a productive member of your community. Those of us “preparers” have organized plans and communities we will protect from the lone wolf like yourself.I would plan on taking your arms to a group of people you trust and bringing something to the table other than a rouge attitude. You might eat a little longer. :)

  • Fools.

You’ll never see or hear me coming.

Your only hope is to have nothing of value to me or to be far far away.

  • This is the second article I’ve run across tonight on ” Preparedness, ” I was happy to note that this one mentioned “Community.” I was also a bit surprised that neither mention just how much weight this survival gear is going to add up to or how much space it will take up.

As a long time hiker and back country lover I have had a bit of experience in rustic living. From Tents in the Rockies and Sierras to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and an old trapper’s cabin in Alaska I have pretty much lived in that way most of my life.

Survival depends on a lot of things, not just how much grub you got or how many bottles of water are stashed away. If all roads are blocked your stocked RV is suddenly going to be a liability not an asset. With roads blocked by earthquake or check points the ability to travel cross country will be reduced to foot transportation, unless you plan to tote your pick-up over the mountains think lighter….

If it all goes up the first thing you must do is realize that this is not a camping trip, you come home from a camping trip, you won’t have a home to come to if it all goes up. You are going to have to find food and water as you go and in the case of food you will most likely have to kill it and clean it. Man bites dog will have a whole new meaning.

That is where the best survival tool will be most welcome. The nice thing about this tool is it takes up no room and it doesn’t weigh an oz. Become knowledgeable.learn about water and how to test it, find it and save it. learn how to preserve foods by drying or smoking. learn what plants in your area can be eaten or used for medicine.

You get the idea here, the more ya know the longer you will live. One of the places I have spent some time hiking is the Idaho and Utah boarder area and parts of the old Boozeman Trail. one of the remarkable things you see on the Trail is tons of cast Iron cook stoves, nickel trimmed Parlor stoves, furniture, house hold goods, sinks etc. that litter the ground. All tossed off overloaded wagons, from about the middle part of the Trail tapering off to just a few items the farther west they got. Take to much you have to throw it away.

A good make pro back pack, a good sleeping bag/ground pad, light tent, fire making items, [ I recommend a mag and steel striker. ]a good hand axe, a good hunting knife, a pro grade compass, [Learn how to use it.} Food, freeze dried is best very lite and can carry many days of food. Limit clothes as appropriate for the weather and how much you can carry. Water, what you can carry and treatment tablets for new sources if in doubt. Other wise boil it for ten mins.

Things like sewing kits are nice but won’t kill ya if you don’t have one. Judge your wants balanced against your needs, in the case of candles and radios and such, they are heavy hard to secure and take up lots of room. In the case of candles I’ve had them melt all over the inside of my back pack not a fun thing.

Keep it light and essential, you may have to relocate in a big hurry. Now, do you see why community is a good idea? You can survive one man alone, but in a group is easier, safer and more productive and more fun. Here’s hoping all your trips are camping trips and may you always come home.

  • Dennis

If you wish to get an idea on how bad lfe could get if there were a collapse of the electrical grid & transportation (EMP) I recommend a visit to this website and also the author William Forstchen & his book One Second After.
    http://www.onesecondafter.com/
The site contains many links that will take you to good info. The book is fiction based upon the findings of the EMP commission and the real damage EMP (or powerful solar storms) would cause.

  • Sunshine

Fear is not good. People are fearful when they can not control and prevent things from happening. Fear causes a RE-action instead of an Action. Biblically a loaf of bread could cost a days wage in the future. Think about it. A loaf of bread could cost you $49.00 just for a loaf. (8 hours X $7.00). Better to be prepared at any given time then be fearful. There has been plenty of Flag waving/warnings going off, do you have the eyes to see and ears to hear and understand what is happening or going on? I like to think most people in general are intelligent and can do research and seek a matter out and make a wise and rational conclusion. But let’s face it, you can scream at some people and they would just look at you and continue on despite the warnings. It happens time and time again. Currently, food is going up and up in cost, and with a new VAT Tax coming that will be added to the costs of goods (a tax on everything you buy or purchase) food will go higher. Dinning out is becoming more expensive and they are adding a HC surcharge to the tab now to cover for the Health Care costs of the employees. What about Cap and Trade which is coming up. You will not be able to sell your house unless certain upgrades are made to it to bring it up to an environmental code. You could have heat for half a month during the winter if you go beyond the mandated consumption levels they want to put in place. The rest of the month you would be cold. Are you ready for this? You can be given a certain amount of water consumption and if you go beyond the standard that they have allot to you, it is shut off till the next month. What would you do with no water? These are just some possible scenarios. If you don’t believe this could happen, think again. It has happened in the past, it will happen again. You grow a garden, you keep 20% the rest is taken for consumption by others. Have the wisdom and knowledge to do research and understand what is going on in the world. A Prudent man will make preparations, a foolish man will let things go by the way side and then expect other to compensate for them.

  • charkee

Butch will be too weak to pillage. When it comes there will be no food, those that have food all know what is coming and will be waiting for the hungry staggering Butches.

Perhaps Mr. Butch will take up cannibalism, first his own children, then the wife and last his dog.

When it comes it will be sudden and unexpected by the sheeple. Under such conditions pandemics will ravage vast swaths of humanity already weakend by hunger.

There are communities that are prepared, we just don’t advertise.

  • Dano

Sorry, I don;t buy it. You can watch the series of videos on uTube about the collapse of Argentine. The country did not roll up the sidewals and die. I have friends who went thru that event there, things were tough, no one starved to death except perhaps street bums.

  • Ilene

@ Butch, people will never see you coming? Just remember that God Almighty is moe powerful than your guns and renegade behavior and anyone he plans to protect from you, you WILL NOT have access to.

  • RLTW!

Invest in a good survival book (free MIL one (http://www.equipped.com/multiservice_ser_manual_1999.pdf and http://www.equipped.com/fm3-0570.htm) They are military oriented, but excellent.

Some comments on your list, as its a start (I will not comment on the collapse, etc) This is really just the tip of the Ice cube:

Food: If you are about to go on a long “hike” like for a couple of weeks… seriously fatten up. Talk to anyone who has done ranger school. They lose 20-45lbs in only 63days. Most fatten up just before going. If you only have one meal/ day, then eat in the morning and eat small amounts throughout the day (like a candy or cracker) and keep drinking water. Surprise salt is important, dont go low sodium in food especially if you are consuming a lot of water. On the move, Eat the most perishable first, eat based solely off the energy you are expending. If you open it consume it, or you will have unwanted pests/animals. In bear country, hang it from a high limb away from where you sleep. If you cant brush your teeth, chew gum, or chew soft twigs.

Gerber or Leatherman is better than a Swiss knife, and BTW Butch I pack heat, so good luck and don’t let the laser sight on your forehead deter you.

Gasoline doesnt store for very long, and know the difference between diesel and gas (I know this is basic, but some people cant tell except for what it says at the pump). And also know that Syphoning gas from new autos is impossible, so don’t try, remove it from the fuel line/filter under the car.

Have a small tool kit/box, with basic tools.

If you are on the move, the right Clothing is extremely important…. Get loose fitting clothing that you can easily layer, have about 3 layers or more (depending on your local climate). One layered set should be enough, but you NEED extra socks, 2-3 pair (or more) of heavy cushioned socks are ESSENTIAL if you are on the move. Change your socks every day, even if you cannot wash them. A week could turn into a month. Dont pack underwear, b/c after a week it will be gone anyway (Most infantry soldiers go without in the field) and is just extra weight. Think of going for a long hunting trip when packing this up, and remember its always colder than you think even in the summer especially when you cannot go indoors anywhere. Pack gloves and ski type hats. At a minimum, keep your feet and shoes dry. If they get wet, walk it out, & change socks more frequently. In the cold, Keep your shoes/boots next to you when you sleep to keep them warm and be ready if you need to move out quickly. Dont be unpacked, take out what you need and leave the rest packed. You may have to take off quickly. (Pack everything you want to keep dry in gallon-sized ziplocks)

Don’t rely on a store first aid kits, buy a medium sized tool bag and get a good first aid “trauma” list(most stuff you can get at walmart). But also consider learning how to start an IV and get a few. Also, address all knicks and cuts, even the small ones. Infections can put you under, ESPECIALLY ON YOUR FEET/LEGS.

Water: If you have bleach, you can use that to purify water. One drop per Quart. Be careful, if you use too much then you will have a bad case of buttmud.

Fire: can be started with 2 D-cell batteries and steel wool, but invest in a magnesium stick that you can use with a knife.

If Money is worthless, have things to bargin with & you will be better off. Consider gold coins, you can always cut off chucks to use as payment. CAUTION: To much of something valuable will make you a target, so consider things that are valuable other than Gold.

A NON-digital watch is helpful, and can be used for navigation… plz dont ask, google it or get a survival book (which is also good) – I use the SAS survival book

MAPS!!!!! Hello, a good map of your area where you intend on going is very helpful, especially of your immediate area (topographic) and will help you locate water. It is impossible to hand carry your water needs, know your sources along your route. Keep a good small atlas with your kit, may have to leave a contaminated area and may have to travel on the roads or beside the roads. You can easily use a good atlas to terrain navigate in lieu of a good topo map. Know the state evacuation routes, then plan an alternative b/c they will be packed.

Set up “rally” points that everyone knows and will link up or leave messages if safe and no communications exist.

Flashlight: invest in an efficient LED headlamp, that way you have both hands free.

The AXE is not required: You need only a good Knife, like a K-bar…dont buy a cheap hollow survival knife (they will break), buy a regular good 5-8in blade that is heavy and durable. You can use the knife with a piece of wood or log to hammer the knife like an axe for firewood….but your call. Remember, you may have to carry it.

If you have a friend in Spec ops or is a Ranger, Seal, etc… ask them for tips or advice… we train in this type of thing.

  • Simo

When the NWO globalists spark WW3, then thats when you wanna take all the necassary actions. Food and water are the most important. Imagine having a smelly body and cant clean your teeth! The UK is way to small to hide in. Im doomed! lol

  • slim2none

Matt-Military will show up to confiscate for their ‘needs’, along with wannabe predators like butch.

Not listed but very needed will be work gloves for our soft hands.

Be sure to have disinfectant in supplies. Infection from simple injuries will take many.

Best of luck to all (except butch)

  • Starcade

    The problem is simple:

There are going to be so many “Butch”s out there that “self defense” shouldn’t be #16 on the list…

    It should be #’s 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.

Without the means (and the willingness) to kill, you won’t make it long. If you’re in the inner city, you might not get out of the first night. If you’re in a smaller town, it depends on how long until the hordes get to you.

He may well be a stupid Internet troll warrior, but the fact is that you have to be ready for people who are all but ready to kill you and take your stash — and that THAT is their only plan.

Remember: Most people on the Internet no longer value the basic human lives of anyone else. Keep that in mind.

  • Heretic

    @Butch:
The simple truth is that 10 guns will only do you good if you have 10 seperate fingers to squeeze the triggers. My neighbors (think rural rednecks)and I have more guns, cases of ammo, and more than enough fingers to squeeze that many triggers.
Dumbass, you might want to re-think your “survival” plans because that is simply, in any real survivalists book, an “all else fails” idea.

Butches approach should be a very real concern. Those who have no supplies may be regarded as “sheeple” by those that have prepared for hard times.

Make no mistake, just because they haven’t prepared doesn’t mean they are stupid. It just means they will be more desperate. Humans are VERY dangerous animals. Desperate humans are even more dangerous and ruthless.

The “lone wolf” types like Butch won’t really be much of a threat to a community. But when his type form a group, they can be a deadly threat. If you don’t think that is a real possibility, just check out any one of the “Gangland” episodes on the History channel.

If you are willing to seriously consider what could happen in the next 18 months, read SgtFear85′s post and follow the link to Ferfal’s experiences in Argentina.

Forget the “Mad Max” fantasies. Humans are social animals, and social groups will establish themselves on different levels. Subdivisions, small towns, or just local groups of like minded individuals.

Be prepared to contribute something of value. Hard work, knowledge, or skills not dependent on electricity. The dependent class that can not, or will not, work will not have a place in hard times. There will no longer be the excesses in society to provide for the sloth of those who believe that they have a “right” to share in the fruits of others labors.

The article may be a scare piece, and many remember that the “Y2K” issue had no impact.

But, are you really willing to bet the lives of your loved ones on the capability of our government to maintain the status quo?

Water, shelter, food, security. Remember how well the government provided during Hurricane Katrina.

I believe that a certain amount of self reliance is prudent. A short visit to the FEMA website will give you their projected time lines for providing assistance. It will also provide information to help you sustain yourself and your family until help can arrive. And if you think their projections of when they will be able to provide ANY essentials is optimistic, increase your personal preparations.

    It’s your decision.

    @Spencer, you wrote:

I have friends who still have bunkers and thousands of dollars of expired canned food…

Well, there’s your problem right there! You don’t just buy it, stash it, and then forget it (until it’s needed). You need to go through regularly and recycle it. If the “Best by” dates on the cans are less than a year old, then they can still donate those cans to a shelter. Keep buying fresh to replace what is not-so-fresh and you’re giving away. It doesn’t have to be in one swell foop. Just a few extra cans a week (esp. when things are on sale) can keep you stocked up without fear of having it go bad.

Yes, it sounds like fearmongering… but what if he’s right?

    Move # 2 to # 1.
With all the sources for MRE’s, freeze-dried and canned food, eating shouldn’t be a problem. You can survive weeks without food.

The real issue will be water because you will only last days without it. Then there is the storage issue for water.

Have enough for forty days once the warning comes. Mej.com After that God will provide. History will repeat itself. (as in the Bible) God will save us once again. When you vote for a president that has a voting record of infantcide (to throw a baby in the garbage) this is the result. God want us on our knees to say we are sorry or he will put us on them. • Declan McRoy

It is exactly because so many of you can not even entertain the idea of such a collapse, that it will happen.

There have never been more deluded and brainwashed generations in the history of humanity, than the ones currently living…

I used to try and make people like Tony W, Simon and Spencer understand how wrong they are and how fragile our situation is but it was like trying to teach trigonometry to my dog.

Then one day, I realized that this is a self solving problem. These fools will perish in the first days or weeks of the new dark age that is coming and while that is itself sad, in the grand scheme of things the gene pool will be cleansed of morons and refreshed with smart, hard working, achieving individuals once again.

So to those of you who want to argue with the author and with the very notion that we are at the edge of one of the darkest periods in history, I have this to say:

    Yeah, whatever!

  • Roger R.

I think Butch will be cannibalized by his own family. I hope they stock up on alka seltzer.

  • So “20th Century” mindset. Boring, Boring, Boring. Did you notice no “author” to the article? Besides, who is capable of surviving? That takes clarity, purpose and fortitude. Who has that in America? This country is so dumbed down, being preoccupied with food (one out of two are overweight and 1 out of 3 is Fat, Fat, FAT!) and entertainment (keep my brain continually submerged in the water; wash, wash, WASH!), while “denial” runs rampant like an infectious dis-ease…any chance of hope when a swiss army knife is in the hand of imbecile operator? Is that why a first aid kit is on the list?

Besides, free energy, once released (i.e. shared), will change everything, overnight. LOL

You forgot the most important thing of all, the necessary skills to use all of the above equipment.

  • I forgot to mention. Butch is one of the “obese” types. Can you see him carrying 7 rifles, 3 pistols and all the rest of that ammo draped around his flabby neck, a la Arnold? He’s a just a puppy dog. A chubby mommy’s boy who lives in his basement and plays video game between refrigerator runs. Don’t mind him. Besides, wtshtf he’ll be sitting on the sidewalk, sniveling, and gnashing the last of his rotten teeth. Sorry for the regression, and the not so pretty picture of our make believe nasty brute.

  • Armed Progressive

Yup, I have to say it too, Butch — I’m ready for you. I’m a hardcore progressive, I believe in green energy such as wind power, I support Obama, etc., etc., etc. — but I do think we’re heading to hell in a handbasket and I’ve prepared. I can grow most of my own food, I can heat my house and prepare my food with my woodstove and my many acres of forest, I have easy access to my own water source, I’ve got over 100 pounds of beans stored and ready, and I just bought a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun and lots and lots of ammo to protect it all.

Also many people say America is not in the Bible, and I used to think the same thing. That is not True!!!!!!!!!!!!
America is described in Revelation 18, as Babylon the Great.
Revelation 18: 9-10 9″When the kings of the earth who committed adultery with her and shared her luxury see the smoke of her burning, they will weep and mourn over her. 10Terrified at her torment, they will stand far off and cry:
” ‘Woe! Woe, O great city,
    O Babylon, city of power!
In one hour your doom has come!’

In one hour? Sounds like nuclear war.
There are visions of America being destroyed by Russian submarines right off our own coasts with nuclear missles.
Several different people have had this vision, A.A. Allen, Dimitru Duduman, and others

This below is a very, very long read, showing that America is Babylon the Great.

I hope you will post this and let the wise take heed, for the foolish will scoff at me, and any who try to warn them!
If we don’t return to God, “IT’S OVER!!!!!!!!!!!!”
God Bless any who will heed this and pray and repent for our nation!

Those of us who are preparing for what now seems to be at our door will be ready. Not only preparing with water, food, fuel, matches, seasonal clothing and whatever else is needed, we will be the few who do survive and will remember the rest of you who did not ‘believe’.

There is no shame in getting ready for any event, especially when it comes on suddenly. Those caught by surprise are the ones who will suffer the most. If you think because you have guns and ammo that you will come and take away what you feel you need and deserve, how?

Without water after two days you will be delirious to the point you can’t think straight. After five days of beans and bacon bits you’ll wish you had stocked up on toilet paper. When you come staggering up with gun in hand, do you really think you’ll be able to pull off this ‘robbery’ and take what you can, how?

Will you have a shopping cart or a little red wagon? Maybe the back of your pickup would work but where will you get the gas? How can you carry anything with guns in hand, don’t you think there will be others waiting who will then take advantage of you?

Those who think the ‘community’ idea won’t work are those who can’t get along with or won’t trust other people. How can you stay awake and alert for 24/7, you, the wife and kids against what odds? Think about it, trusting family, neighbors and friends in a small group will be the only way to get through this unless they bomb us into eternity.

A small group can provide many things, sharing in the expense of preparing and putting things away in the best, safest location you can find. Those living in a city, large town or even in a development, you need to have a plan of escape to quickly get to a safer location.

And finally, those who think God will take care of them. Unless you are Jewish living in Israel you will be out of luck. The Scripture teaches us to prepare for many things in life, this is no exception. Unlike Y2K which was a possible man-made problem, this is Prophesy and laid out in Scripture to let us know, get ready. At the pace things are moving along, better get prepared now.

  • Michael

This discussion saddens me both as a Catholic and as an American. As a Catholic because we know Catholics realize that we are community. In a great disaster we are not loners, or alone, we are still community. We may think about disasters but our plans need to be based on community. How do we handle the panic and despair that will come after a tremendous disaster? What should we do as people prepared to get the community back and functioning, even if it is at a reduced level? What will we need to get us ALL through this? As Americans we have a rich Christian cultural heritage that reacted to disasters with a “can-do” attitude. Each person thought about the other and thus we acted in each others best interest. There is a problem and we will solve it as Americans or die trying. We must prepare but we must think about how we can best help each other. I can see from the posts that there are a lot people with a lot of talent. I would say let us put that talent together to prepare for helping each other. If more people do this then we will be thinking and acting like God wants us to and like our countries fore fathers acted.

  • mekrob

i don’t know about you guys but im getting as far away from the cities i can. Take what I don’t already have and go. In my opinion after the collapse the situation in the cities is going to degenerate in the the biggest gang ruling. To really survive we would need to do what our fore fathers did and thats to live off the land. Lets face it the majority of people in this country are dependant on the “machine” and when the machine breakdown tthen they will also breakdown. Let just hope all the idiots kill themselves off.

  • Cleber

    Hi,
I don’t think it will be that simple.
There is a main thing that is not talked that so important. The Obama kind administration, that has some similar in some other countries, has a huge consequence
It appears to bring us a civil war. The Obama administration put a lot of money into the hands of the very rich people and left the poor people alone. This kind of segregation used to be the cause of some civil wars.
In the begining of a civil war it’s not clear who is your enemy. But you must be prepared to fight. It’s not important to have food, water, clothes and a shelter if there are famine poor people around you. You will need to defend your personal things too. Be prepared!

  • gb

    Well said, Michael.
If “armed progressive” wants to be really armed, he needs to read Lk 12:13-20

  • Jean

In the short run, skill and cunning will keep you alive; in the long run…only God will save you. You might as well turn to Him now and save yourself a lot of unnecessary suffering while you try to work it out without Him. God respects free will, but rewards the faithful with daily miracles. Remember, the Israelites ate manna in the desert for 40 years; water came miraculously from a rock. Jesus multiplied the loaves and fishes. There is a reason the stories of these miracles survived and are so well known to the Christian world. Because in His great love for humanity, God wants us to know what He will do for us when all our idols fall.

  • Lisa

Why don’t you ALL pull together and make plans with the local churches / or clubs you belong to. Even if you get a small percentage to store a little extra food & water, that will help overall. Just talking to your neighbors about being prepared may help. No one should depend on the Gov’t to help. I think most families in the US (at least conservatives) have guns/ammo and some food stored – with the exception of those who depend on the Gov’t for handouts.

  • David

No one is taling about this but it is coming so prepare. http://tinyurl.com/2bpvu3q or Google “The Imminent Crash of the Oil Supply”.

PS: don’t underestimate Butch. He’s probably trained military & a vetran of one of our colonial wars who’s killed his fair share.

  • Mark Stephen

don’t forget to turn to God and pray.

  • sharonsj

Trust in God but keep your powder dry….

You need to take responsibility for your own survival. I for one do not plan to go anywhere. My rural property has plenty of water, game, trees, and plants. I already have 17 out of 20 on that list. I don’t have an axe but I’m sure I’ve got a machete somewhere. Maybe next to the rifles and boxes of ammo….

And since I have no need to eat my dogs, I don’t think Butch is creeping up on anybody.

  • This is a great list, but if the collapse doesn’t happen right away you might want to look at getting existing systems in your home more independent. These are outlined well in “Thriving During Challenging Times, The Energy, Food and Financial Independence Handbook.” http://www.cammather.com/

  • The ones I’m lacking on this list so far is the swiss army knife, compass, Axe self defense weapons and compass. I live in a rather suburbian place, difficult to get lost around here. Though I ought to consider getting an axe. I’m a fair jack in in blacksmithing, so I could perhaps forge or improvise one when I need to wing it.

Of course, I also protect my purchasing power as well.

  • Look at what this administration has done!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Boost for disarmament talks as US reveals size of nuclear arsenal

Hillary Clinton, the US Secretary of State, announced the declassification of one of the Pentagon’s most closely guarded secrets at the opening day of a critical international meeting on global disarmament.

The Pentagon’s figures show that the US stockpile consists of 5,113 nuclear warheads and “several thousand” more retired warheads that await dismantling. The figures reveal an 84 per cent reduction from the historic peak of 31,225 warheads in 1967 at the height of the Cold War.

“Beginning today, the United States will make public the number of nuclear weapons in our stockpile and the number of weapons we have dismantled since 1991,” Mrs Clinton told the UN review conference on the Non-Proliferation Treaty. “So for those who doubt that the United States will do its part on disarmament, this is our record, these are our commitments and they send a clear, unmistakable signal.”

    http://www.godlikeproductions.com/forum1/message217339/pg1

You must yell in a loud voice that they must put an end to their sinning. They must turn toward the Lord. The Lord never gets tired of forgiving. They must draw close to the Lord, and live a clean life. If they have sinned until now, they must put an end to it, and start a new life as the Bible tells them to live.”

I said, “How will America burn?” America is the most powerful country in this world. Why did you bring us here to burn? Why didn’t you at least let us die where ALL the Dudumans have died?”

He said, “Remember this, Dumitru. The Russian spies have discovered where the nuclear warehouses are in America. When the Americans will think that it is peace and safety – from the middle of the country, some of the people will start fighting against the government. The government will be busy with internal problems. Then from the ocean, from Cuba, Nicaragua, Mexico,,..” (He told me two other countries, but I didn’t remember what they were.) “…they will bomb the nuclear warehouses. When they explode, America will burn!”

I would truly like everyone to be able to come back to me and say I was crazy, but my fear is that im accurate when I say that I believe martial law is eminent within the next 7 months. For those who aren’t aware, our congress and pres. are NOT who controls our Gov. It is the Elite, the International Bankers who have established themselves as the FED. Power is their only goal, at any price and they have everything to loose with this next election if they don’t stop it, and martial law is that estoppel. If they are not removed very very soon, you will wish You sold everything of value and filled ever space in your home with your families needs. We have been warned!God protect us
