Bankrupt, Decaying And Nearly Dead: 24 Facts About The City Of Detroit That Will Shock You

Bankrupt, Decaying And Nearly Dead: 24 Facts About The City Of Detroit That Will Shock You - Photo by Angelique DuLongIf you want to know what the future of America is going to be like, just look at the city of Detroit.  Once upon a time it was a symbol of everything that America was doing right, but today it has been transformed into a rotting, decaying, post-apocalyptic hellhole.  Detroit was once the fourth-largest city in the United States, and in 1960 Detroit had the highest per-capita income in the entire nation.  It was the greatest manufacturing city the world had ever seen, and the rest of the globe looked at Detroit with a sense of awe and wonder.  But now the city of Detroit has become a bad joke to the rest of the world.  Unemployment is rampant, 60 percent of the children are living in poverty and the city government is on the verge of bankruptcy.  They say that Detroit is just a matter of “weeks or months” away from running out of cash, and when Detroit does declare bankruptcy it will be the largest municipal bankruptcy in the history of the United States.  But don’t look down on Detroit, because the truth is that Detroit is really a metaphor for what is happening to America as a whole.  In the United States today, our manufacturing infrastructure has been gutted, poverty is absolutely exploding and we are rapidly approaching national bankruptcy.  Detroit may have gotten there first, but the rest of the country will follow soon enough.

Back during the boom years, Detroit was known for making great cars.  Today, it is known for scenes of desolation and decay.  It is full of vandalized homes, abandoned schools and empty factories.  The following description of what Detroit looks like at this point is from an article by Barry Yeoman

It’s hard to describe the city’s physical landscape without producing what Detroiters call “ruin porn.” Brick houses with bays and turrets sit windowless or boarded up. Whole blocks, even clusters of blocks, have been bulldozed. Retail strips have been reduced to a dollar store here, a storefront church there, and a whole lot of plywood in between. Not a single chain supermarket remains.

So what caused the downfall of one of the greatest cities on earth?

Well, here is a hint…

Between December 2000 and December 2010, 48 percent of the manufacturing jobs in Michigan were lost.

When you are a manufacturing area, and you lose half of your manufacturing jobs over the course of a single decade, of course things are going to get really, really bad.

So just how bad have things gotten in Detroit?

The following are 24 facts about the city of Detroit that will shock you…

#1 Detroit was once the fourth-largest city in the United States, and it was once home to close to 2 million people.  But over the last several decades people have been fleeing in droves.  According to the 2010 census, only 713,000 people now live in Detroit, and city officials admit that the population has probably slipped under 700,000 at this point.

#2 The population of Detroit has declined by about 25 percent over the past decade.  The last time the population of Detroit was this low was all the way back in 1910.

#3 Today, Detroit is only the 18th-largest city in America.  It is now smaller than Austin, Texas and Charlotte, North Carolina.

#4 Back in 1960, the city of Detroit had the highest per-capita income in the United States.

#5 Today, the unemployment rate in Detroit is more than 18 percent, which is more than twice as high as the nation as a whole.

#6 According to a report that was just recently released, approximately 60 percent of all children in Detroit live in poverty.

#7 Approximately one-third of Detroit’s 140 square miles are either vacant or derelict.

#8 The city government of Detroit has closed dozens of schools and has decided to cut off public services to the “heavily blighted areas“.

#9 According to one estimate, there are 33,500 empty houses and 91,000 vacant residential lots in the city of Detroit today.

#10 The median price of a home in Detroit is just $9,000, and there are some areas of Detroit where you can still buy a house for $100.

#11 There are more than 85,000 streetlights in Detroit, but thieves have stripped so much copper wiring out of the lights that more than half of them are not working.

#12 Mayor Bing has announced a plan to reduce the number of streetlights in the city of Detroit to just 46,000.

#13 According to one very shocking report, 47 percent of all people living in the city of Detroit are functionally illiterate at this point..

#14 The murder rate in Detroit is 11 times higher than it is in New York City.

#15 There were 377 homicides in Detroit in 2011.  In 2012, that number rose to 411.

#16 Justifiable homicide in Detroit rose by an astounding 79 percent during 2011.

#17 In one recent year, the rate of self-defense killings in the city of Detroit was 2200% above the national average.

#18 Ten years ago, there were approximately 5,000 police officers in the city of Detroit.  Today, there are only about 2,500 and another 100 are scheduled to be eliminated from the force soon.

#19 Due to budget cutbacks, most police stations in Detroit are now closed to the public for 16 hours a day.

#20 Crime has gotten so bad in Detroit that even the police are are telling people to “enter Detroit at your own risk“.

#21 At one point, 100 bus drivers in Detroit refused to drive their routes because they were afraid of being attacked out on the streets in broad daylight.  The head of the bus drivers union, Henry Gaffney, said that the drivers were literally “scared for their lives“….

“Our drivers are scared, they’re scared for their lives. This has been an ongoing situation about security. I think yesterday kind of just topped it off, when one of my drivers was beat up by some teenagers down in the middle of Rosa Parks and it took the police almost 30 minutes to get there, in downtown Detroit,” said Gaffney.

#22 There have been reports that gangs of young men with AK-47s have been terrorizing gas stations all over Detroit.

#23 Detroit was once known for making some of the greatest cars in the world.  Now, it is known around the world as a dumping ground for the dead

From the street, the two decomposing bodies were nearly invisible, concealed in an overgrown lot alongside worn-out car tires and a moldy sofa. The teenagers had been shot, stripped to their underwear and left on a deserted block.

They were just the latest victims of foul play whose remains went undiscovered for days after being hidden deep inside Detroit’s vast urban wilderness — a crumbling wasteland rarely visited by outsiders and infrequently patrolled by police.

#24 Detroit’s public schools are an absolute nightmare.  The following is from one of my readers that actually attended one of the “best” public schools in Detroit…

The school was a new seven story building just a couple of years old. The bathrooms would often lack toilet paper & soap beyond the second floor (the main floor), the bathroom sinks would often not work. The water fountains on north side of the building on from the third floor & up did not work. The elevators would constantly break down. I even got stuck on the elevator before. I almost tripped down a half a flight of stairs because the elastic seal (it was the metal bar at the front of a treader of I don’t know the name of it.) the stairs was not properly installed.

Students would often have sex on the stairs & throughout the school. Parents actually called the school many times & reported kids having sex on the stairs because all of them had glass windows 270 degrees.

Even over in Europe they write stories about the dramatic decline of Detroit.  For example, the following is how one British reporter described his visit to Detroit

Much of Detroit is horribly dangerous for its own residents, who in many cases only stay because they have nowhere else to go. Property crime is double the American average, violent crime triple. The isolated, peeling homes, the flooded roads, the clunky, rusted old cars and the neglected front yards amid trees and groin-high grassland make you think you are in rural Alabama, not in one of the greatest industrial cities that ever existed.

For those that want to read even more about the horrifying downfall of Detroit, there are some amazing charts that graphically show the decline of Detroit right here.

So what is the solution?

How can we fix Detroit?

Well, why don’t we just build a monorail!  Of course that sounds ridiculous, but the federal government has actually committed $25 million to construct “a streetcar line” that nobody really wants and that very few people would probably actually use.  Perhaps they could be excused for wasting so much money on a bad idea if there had not already been 24 failed attempts to develop a successful public transit system in Detroit over the past four decades.

Well, why don’t we just build a bunch of theme parks instead?  After all, tourists would just flock to Detroit, right?

It has been suggested that Detroit would be ideal for an “automotive theme park”, and there is actually one group of investors that wants to turn some of the worst areas of Detroit into a “zombie theme park”.

What will they think of next?

Actually, a much better idea would have been to not allow millions of our good paying manufacturing jobs to be shipped to the other side of the world, but it is too late for that at this point.

But once again, please do not look down on the city of Detroit.  Instead, let the city of Detroit serve as a warning for the rest of us.

The truth is that the entire U.S. economy is in an advanced state of decline…

-The percentage of the civilian labor force in the United States that is employed has been steadily declining every single year since 2006.

-An astounding 53 percent of all American workers make less than $30,000 a year.

-Amazingly, there are hundreds of thousands of Americans with either Master’s degrees or Ph.D.s that are enrolled in the food stamp program at this point.

We are a nation that consumes far more wealth than we produce, we are a nation that is constantly bleeding jobs, businesses and wealth, and we are a nation that is going deeper into debt with each passing day.

Yes, Detroit may have gone over the edge into economic oblivion first, but the rest of the nation is steamrolling down the exact same path that Detroit has gone.

Is it too late for us to change direction?

Please feel free to share your thoughts on that question by leaving a comment below…

It all really began with Reaganomics, which allowed the rich to become richer, to go offshore, to buy up power and total control on government. Read, learn, question, investigate, the real answers are not easy to find.

The blacks voted in Young and down went Detroit. The horrid place has been run by blacks for years. Now they have what they wanted. Let them have it. It is a great sight to show children what happens when the uneducated and liberal minded are in charge. All the hand outs in the world made no difference. Now let them eat their own.

it really should just be condemmed and turned into a zombie attraction..were 78% there anyway—

I keep seeing NAFTA as the reason why. I disagree, the problem is that the Unions pushed the employee pay and benefits to a point that the manufactures could not produce a product that most people could not afford. Then the auto manufactures started cutting corners so that they could sell product which resulted in buyers wanting foreign products. If you can receive Welfare, Food Stamps, or any other entitlement then why work? We created this mess by electing and reelecting the same old politicians for decades. They do not have our best interest at heart, they are there for their benefit. Why not go and serve one term and then receive a government pension and life time health benefits. We work so that others dont have too. We will never move forward in this country until we right the wrongs of the past and start working twards tomorrow instead of paying for the past.

  • No-Idiot

Running out of cash? Ask the FED to print more from thin air. The cash is no problem. The problem is you do not understand economy. You do not need cash to live but product. Why you do not start your own economy? Start to manufacture all people need and print for that your own “money”. After 3 months you will be rich. That is economy! Every villige in Europe knows it.

“Actually, a much better idea would have been to not allow millions of our good paying manufacturing jobs to be shipped to the other side of the world, but it is too late for that at this point.”

This is a fallacious argument. The truth is manufacturing jobs “disappear” BECAUSE of unions. To wit, look at the non-union manufacturing jobs that are springing up in the US South.

When someone in Mexico, China, or even the US South is willing to do the same LABOR for a lower and fairer price, the company becomes more competitive.

The US auto industry long ago fell into complacency. Both labor unions, the engineers, and especially the business management. Even Michael Moore successfully captured the hubris and how out of touch the former Big Three were from reality in his early film, “Roger and Me”.

The reality is that companies are businesses and compete first locally, then nationally, then internationally. But American arrogance and hubris prevented US automakers from acknowledging the threat that foreign automakers posed to them. The US automakers flat out assumed American consumers would buy American cars, ride or die – no matter how bad the product was.

US cars were and still are, poorly engineered and poorly built. US automobiles breakdown more frequently than foreign automobiles.

When a company takes their paying customers for granted, that is when they are in trouble.

Thus began the long decline of the US auto industry.

What can save Detroit? Nothing. First, stop considering Detroit a city; or rather a big city. Part of the problem is the lamentation that persists over the state of Detroit. Detroit had its heyday. It is now to be considered a 2ndary or 3-tier city – the likes of Rochester NY, Akron, OH, Gary, IN, Spokane, WA, etc. – It is a city, but a small city. And it needs to be funded like a small city.

Perish all thoughts of “rebuilding”. Instead, embrace the status of a small city. This new paradigm will open new economic avenues.

I personally believe that with all that vacant run down land, the area should be turned into an experimental “green city utopia” – where a lot of green buildings, planned community developments, even urban farming, could be built, tested, and marketed.

In Europe, there are communities developed for this purpose. Universities the world over would love to experiment, research, and take advantage of such an opportunity.

This still flies too close to the failed tree-hugging Democrat policies, but this one example of an industry that can be brought in – the “green industry” and the educational industry.

Hey Mike, why are you keep picking Detroit to dump on? Cities come and go throughout history. Check out Dodge City. Detroit has decayed because the people who live there allowed it that way. Auto manufacturing has gone south long time ago. There you will find the new Detroit of old. As to the current one, well, its up to the people there. If they can’t fix it, then Detroit will disappear. That’s economics and that’s life. Or death.

    • morrisminor

  • bruce wayne

Detroit had a 11 term Mayor during the Heydays of Detroit that bled the federal funding to rebuild after the riots of 67. He was given millions of dollars to restore the Brewster Projects, (the home of Diana Ross). To say that outsourcing killed the economic base of Detroit proper is like saying methane from cow farts is the primary cause of global warming. Coleman Young was given a federal, ‘carte blanc”, because of the race riots. So much money was thrown in his lap and left out the back door to extort, embezzle, bribe and pay-off union stewards, commissioners and the mothers of the illegitimate children of various men of authority in Detroit. The barest minimal restoration projects were done to maintain the grant money from the federal government. Renaissance Theaters were gutted and made into parking structures, their heavy velvet curtains still hanging, likely to this day.
The first generation of auto-manufacturers believed in Detroit and its future. The children of these pioneers left their mini-mansions in Detroit to enjoy the suburbs, never to return, never to look back.
It is the same power struggle we deal with now. 99% are left to fight and struggle for the American dream while the 1% reap the benefit from the sweat of their workers.
The exception here is that Coleman Young and his conspirators made the decision that they weren’t living in the status quo and took it upon themselves to turn the system upon itself and reap the benefit of the blind eye of our federal government.

To be a member of the Demonrat party means you have a low intelligence or are a crooked corrupt individual. It is to late to save this country. When the Demonrats passed legislation in 1965 with that devil Ted Kennedy allowing 3 million poor uneducated third world people to enter the country annually that was the beginning of the end. Then allowing millions of illegal aliens to enter this country every year was done by design to make sure the Demonrat Party would never lose an election. Soon all elections will be rigged most are anyway with millions of illegals voting. You watched it for decades Americans and said nothing now live with it.

  • Thaddeus S. Kaczor, Jr.

You do not know me, where I live, or my political philosophy. Based on your vitriolic comments cloaked in pseudo-intellectualism, I doubt you have ever even BEEN to Detroit, let alone ever lived or worked there. The problem with arguments like yours is they appear semi-reasonable, until you peel away the onion-like layers of ‘conservative’ boilerplate to reveal the basic flaw of trying to reduce a deep and complex problem into a mere ‘racial’ argument. You seem to have an unnatural predilection for blaming a ‘race’ or ‘color’ and just washing your hands of the problem. As I said previously, which you apparently ignored, Racial prejudice against whites is still a problem within the city of Detroit, where it is used as a control mechanism to fool the electorate and maintain the rotten-to-the-core status quo. I say you are not from Detroit, because you think that the entire Metro area is like the burnt-out wild-west that has engulfed much of the city (especially the East Side and Inner west side. The suburbs (where many people of ALL races, creeds and colors live) is one of the most desirable areas to live in the country, and Oakland County is one of the richest counties in America. Keep on thinking that your biased, cartoon-like and paper-thin view of ‘Detroit’ is something other than a media-induced dystopic fantasy. Much of the actual city itself is indeed a corrupt, dangerous $#!+-hole. But taking the naiive and simplistic view that ‘it’s all the black’s fault’ only serves to strip away any veneer of credibility and integrity you may think you have to reveal a simplistic, racist and counter-productive deep belief. If you want to prevent the rest of the country from becoming ‘Detroit’, you need to drop the pseudo-conservative jingoistic race-bait-taking and stop falling right into the divisive trap laid by the very same Marxist/Progressives who relish when so-called ‘conservatives’ play the divisive and destructive racial blame-game. Divide and Conquer has been used by tyrannical governments throughout history to keep the ‘proles’passionately battling each other over side issues while they loot the treasury, destroy the economy and social order, and tighten their oily grasp on the throats of the populace. That’s how they maintain control in Detroit, and with people with attitudes like you, that’s how they intend to control America.

    • JohnCabel

You can only “fool” people with very low intelligence. This is something “conservatism Inc.” does not want to face.

  • morrisminor

Oh baloney, the Big Three made crappy cars that the Japs and Euros slaughtered with far superior, more efficient designs. Plus it was not mentioned here the 800 lbs gorilla in the living room, Detroit is 85% black, so no wonder why it looks like Haiti.

Dear USA what are you doing?

  • Harry Carlin

Detroit reminds me of the old PC Game ‘Sim City’ and the buildings going ‘black’ and crumbling when ‘your’ City is running out of Money………sad to see it in real life. But the reality IS, the Western World has CHOSEN to TRADE with the Chinese, instead of FIGHTING them………Even in Australia the results of this decision are heavily evident. About 99% of our Clothing Industry has gone………almost every item of clothing, textiles and footwear we buy are either manufactured in China, or in other ‘3rd world’ countries. 20 years back I working in a Cotton Spinning Mill. Today the mill has long been bulldozed and replace with a Strip Mall. The Automobile Industry here, likewise has been decimated, with the removal of almost all Import Tariffs. Almost weekly, ‘car-industry-related’ suppliers close their doors, putting hundreds more Australian workers on the dole. Why is this so ? Because successive Australian Governments have kowtowed to the quick buck and the People Republic of China. We sell our base metals and Iron ore and Oil and gas (which are ‘non-renewable’ resources) at ‘sub-par price’ rates. and get Billions of tonnes of cheap shoddy Chinese ‘trade goods’ in return. This phenomena is reminiscent of the American Indians selling off THEIR Lands… and THEIR rights for a handful of beads and a few blankets… return for a ‘guarantee-of-peace’ with the White Man……… It doesn’t ‘work’. Sooner or later we WILL have to ‘buy back the Farm’, at considerable cost. And the cost will be in terms of millions of lives, and will make World war Two look like a childrens game. Either that, or we Surrender NOW, and become Chinese Citizens !

  • Yiannis

“Amazingly, there are, hundreds of Thousands, of Americans, with either a master’s degrees and Ph.D.s are enrolled in the food stamp program at this point.” Let us think for a moment. The Great people, that Made this Nation Great, they had no Masters, and Ph. D.s. They were hard working, and love their Country. Now those who have Masters, and Ph.D.s. Read, they leave the U.S.A. Most U.S.A. Billionaires live outside the U.S.A. but their money still earned here. Just my opinion. Detroit, Here We Come.

    a) Greece is much worse, the decline has occurred over the past 3 years not 100 as in Detroit.

    b) Detroit is the future of the entire world, done in by its wonderful cars, fuel waste and declining net energy.

    c) Detroit can be fixed but not by repeating the same strategies that caused the problems in the first place.

    • tommysand

The Greeks are an amazingly resilient people who have suffered throughout history with foreign occupation, famine, war, and poverty, and yet the Greek standard of dignity and self-reliance has never wavered. You have never seen, nor will you ever see, this level of social decline in Greece. How dare some wanker from redneck Virginia, of all places, make such a comparison. Look at your own state’s problems before dragging in a civilization with a 5000 year history, who were producing great works of arts and science, while your ancestors were living in huts and had sticks and mud in their hair.

      • jrdobbsjr

Modern Greeks only have a tenuous genetic and cultural link to the Ancients, thanks to centuries of Turkish rule. And Greece today is such a mess that honest to god Fascists are well on the way to becoming the majority party there.

        • tommysand

oh please– what cultural sour grapes, slagging off the Greeks. Perhaps your ancestors might have interbred with their occupiers, but the Greeks did not significantly mix with the Turks beyond learning to bake baklava.

when u try to defy logic and econ 101 and bring in unions eventually through legislation and regulation and the defying of econ 101 a company runs out of innovated ways to pass the cost of union contracts to the buyers…..the products and contracts get very expensive and the company goes belly up…..of course don’t forget the gov’t unions which has endless tax dollars coming in so they can maintain for a while until the private companies go belly up and then colaps sets in……the problem here is greed and entitlements …..instead of taking a life time to build a home and save and invest people want a ponzi scheme to support them when they retire….or they want thousands to spend and waste on pleasure …..if everyone went back to….. u work save and invest and live a simple life ….then u can sit back and enjoy your retirement….but thats too simple …..accountablity is what we need to get back to….

Thank you for speaking the truth. I truly hope one day these brainwashed fools will wake up to the truth before we turn into South Africa 2.0. However, in this country, being a racist is literally the worst thing you can ever be. NOBODY will defend “racism” but many will defend pedophiles, animal abusers, etc because it’s “not their fault”. Interesting how truly vile behavior is brushed aside but God forbid you look at the facts on race! Keep fighting the good fight, it’s all we race realists can do.

  • Engineer Tim

I live with the three million suburban people outside of the city of Detroit. The unemployment among engineers is less than 1% currently. The problem and fix in Detroit is simple. You need to be mean to lazy and stupid people. Force them to go to school and get educated. We don’t hire uneducated people. Furthermore, do not reward people for bad behavior. Getting pregnant at 15 is nothing to be rewarded for. Do what my dad did to me. If you are lazy and worthless you will be living in the cold. Caused me to get a job and get a degree.
Frankly I hate to say this but the black man is probably the worst parent out there. Screw them and leave the mess for the working white man to pay for the party. I am sorry but I am not paying for a party I am not invited to.
Take these lazy welfareites and send them to my suburban home so they can be introduced to a rake and shovel. After all I pay for their gunshot wounds and children. Make them pay me back. The truth always hurts. We have children having children. They know no other way of life.
    Liberalism running unchecked produced Detroit.
Sorry for rambling but I have watched Detroit in decline my entire lifetime. It is simple to see what the blacks do wrong that others do right.
On manufacturing, if a China man can do you job, you are toast. Get educated. We make the complex and quality stuff here. China makes mostly simple things and most of it is crap.

  • realityone

Please stop with the race card. Makes me sick. Do you need white people there to make it nice, safe and sustainable again. Can’t you be black and do that for yourself. I think it’s called work.

  • Ben Harrison Parks

The racial story of Detroit is multifaceted and not as simple as it might seem on the surface. It was indeed a magnet for Southerners looking to improve their lot, both blacks and whites, but mostly black. The Jews, who ran the stores and rented out a lot of the homes at that time, moved to the new suburbs and sold homes to hard workng black people who maintained the neighborhoods to a high standard, even making improvements.
My young childhood was in a transitional neighboorhood that contained all ethnic groups. We played and grew up together, in and out of each other’s homes, obeying friend’s parents as if they were our own. The adults were most renting, saving up to by that first home and, like so many of my friends, my family moved to a then affluent near suburban community called Highland Park, just North of the traditional black neighborhood called The North End. It too was racially mixed as many of the whites there realized that the blacks moving in held the same values and, for awhile, we grew up in complete harmony. My HS class of 1966 was 50/50 racially.
Then came the ’67 riot and white flight to the shiny new suburbs began in earnest. After that the factories began to close at an every increasing rate and the city began a terrible slide. Many who could afford it, both black and white, fled to the suburbs and left behind a struggling minority amidst decreasing job opportunities.
Things got worse & worse until conditions became comparable to some thrid world nations. And a once beautiful jewel of a city became a hellhole.

The whites were leaving Detroit starting in the mid 50’s because of black crime. In 1960 Detroit was only 28% black but they committed 65% of all crime. This is what killed Detroit. It just accellerated in 67. Blacks were given a city that fully functioned and they destroyed all on their own.

  • Detroiter In Exile

The city of Detroit was in steep decline since 1967, This was before Manufacturing in Michigan went into decline. It took a huge turn into decay when Blacks became a majority. If you want to look at the effects of the wholesale destruction of manufacturing, the export of tools to China, look at suburban Detroit, like Dearborn, Warren and Livonia . If manufacturing in Michigan made a huge comeback, Detroit wouldn’t. The fact is , This is what blacks do, See Zimbabwe, Johannesburg,Suburban Paris.Detroit died of denial. The Inability of anyone ( black ,white or other)to hold the Black community of being accountable for anything what so ever. Everything is blamed on whites.even after they were ethnically cleansed from their homes.

Marxist, Owellian think.. Homogenization is diversity, Diversity is Homogenization, and once segregation and apartheid ended , they all lived happily ever after… well almost

  • Stephan B. Feibish

Things seem to work in cycles. Ask Charles Nenner:) You’ve looking at the bottom of a cycle. America is blessed with abundant natural resources. We can fix our broke political and economic systems. We’ll work our way out of debt. The next generation will have more people who will need “stuff”. We’ll do OK. Maybe not as well as our parents. But we’ll do OK. My two cents.

  • papa46

Ah, the era of Social Planning. Chicago will most likely be next because that city too is controlled by the liberal Socialist Progressives. The only thing keeping Washington, DC(district of criminals) alive is the amount of inflated money the government can print.

we need politicians interested in us rather than their priorities: get reelected, get rich, pay off the special interests that benefit them. None of our corrupt selfish politicians have had the courage to tell us to stop buying foreign products, especially when new or used US ones are available, stop using products that are oil based or use lots of energy to produce and have government create incentives for jobs here rather than rewarding firms that outsource, many of which pay little or no US taxes. Not to mention all the government waste, military spending, etc. Oh yeah, what about big rewards for NOT having tons of kids that just go on the dole instead of the opposite. Good luck. Won’t happen without some sort of Jeffersonian revolution.

  • Rick

We are doomed as a nation. It’s going to come to a point where the federal government is going to have to bail out all U.S. states, putting the federal government trillions more in debt. By this time, it will be almost impossible to save america as a whole. Every state will be far to deteriorated to save, especially with the federal government already being 17 trillion dollars in debt. Be prepared for a complete financial meltdown.

  • Lulu012

wow, reading the comments on here show that when the collapse begins, most people who will be prepared will be racists who believe that black people are inherently violent, evil…I’ll make sure to stay away from other preppers from now on and keep my resources to myself. My goodness…

  • Yoyolifa

I didn’t know that Detroit became what I thought the one of the best city’s in the world now its just a dump how time flys and you expect happiness but I was wrong its sad and depressing that this is what happens when people get selfish and greedy that they don’t realize what are the consaconsis are when they think its a step forward to success ends up not being what they thought happiness

  • bucky0729

Well, as far as the racist statements, the blacks were handed a heaping pile of excrement. So how do you improve on it? Give ANYONE a good paying, future
inducing job, and you don’t have these problems. Bill
Bonds should roll over in his grave.

  • Jmmy

If direct democracy was here, the people wouldnt have voted for all of the failed laws that led to our decline. No houses for loosers, no free lunch for those that dont work, no deregulating bankers or bailing them out. Representative democracy was not written by god. It is a failed concept.

I pray every night that these places up north, in California, and New Orleans recover soon so we can have Atlanta back. Atlanta was the jewel of the 1990’s and now even the suburbs are declining. I asked my new neighbor from St. Louis where he worked. When he told me he hadn’t found a job yet I asked him why he moved here. He mumbled something about family and walked away. So sad.

I about crapped my pant from laughing so hard when I read they wanted to build a monorail. Our government is watching to many Simpsons episodes. If you don’t believe it watch it, the monorail almost destroys Springfield. Hmmmm sound fimilar?

I think a zombie theme park is Detroit’s only realistic hope for income.. how effed up is that?

  • clancymc

Detroit is a perfect example of what can happen to a city when the rioting and looting caused by black people drive the white people out because the whites don’t want to have to live in an unsafe high crime area. Detroit has been run by black politicians who don’t know any more about running a government than Obama does. Detroit is an example of what the rest of our country will look like when Obama finally leaves office. Blacks are good at running their mouths but not very good at running businesses and government. Most of them are not interested in going to school or picking up a hammer and saw and doing something for their own neighborhoods. Until the blacks learn how to stop their violent riots and protests every time that things don’t go their way, we will never have peace and prosperity in this country.

  • Teddy

Why not give free land to some food manufacturing industry with incentives, it will create jobs and boost the city’s economy
At the same time taking temporary help from another state’s police force and round up the criminals that are scaring people from being in Detroit

  • God

It’s Amazing how well the Tigers, Lions and Redwings are doing in these tough times……

  • God

I would start with jobs to bulldoze all the dumps, old buildings and empty old houses….block by block and start all over again…….even if it CLEARS half the city. Then put the cops in the new areas as they are built with ZERO crime tolerance to move that kind out for good. Shoot to kill any muggers, dealers and thieves.

  • Bankruptcy Melbourne

But also Filing Bankruptcy have also some good point. If you find yourself in a difficult financial position the thought of declaring bankruptcy has probably crossed your mind a few times. It is important to meet with a bankruptcy lawyer to discuss your situation and the possible outcomes if you do file for bankruptcy. There are approximately 1.25 million Americans that declare bankruptcy each year. There is still a lot of confusion about bankruptcy.

  • kraamdor

white people left and the blacks couldn’t keep it alive, that isn’t racist, that’s a fact! and why should white people feel bad for not living near minorities? if we were all meant to bee together why did god put us all on different sides of the earth.

  • Bankrupt

Worst scenario, i hope it wont happened again, and also the government make an action of this.

  • I Will Bury You

To be honest I don’t think anyone can save Detroit at this point. I could be wrong though. Would I love to see it grow back up yea I would.

  • Rob

If blacks would smarten up and stop being violent criminals, whites would return and the city would become an economic utopia. It’s really too bad blacks are so stupid.

  • Hortosapien

Let me start with stating that Detroit is an opportunity because we have nothing to lose by trying new and inventive approaches if we cancel allegiance to the defeated intrinsic suppositions we have persisted in using in this country. Simply put we need to fix Detroit or we are signaling defeat of our entire future in America.

We can do this by using an experimental new form of government that can successfully combine city and rural lifestyles with a requirement that government positions be filled only with those who have the education and experience to do their duties. This could be accomplished by pooling those qualified and using a lottery system. They could be paid higher than average wages for the time being and that could be readdressed later.

We could use eminent domain to take over control of all abandoned properties and then demolish or restore while rewriting the fabric of the city to create green beltways with gardens that could feed the population thus replacing their reliance on the “company stores” we have come to live under in this century which are causing the problems to escalate bringing feelings of defeat to the populace.

This is a grand opportunity but our elite don’t care because they are blind to anything but their international investment portfolios.

  • Bonnie Carollin

TJ- I am white -I grew up in Detroit- 50-60s You are sooo RIGHT on the money. Glad 2 know you.

  • Thomas Talache

We need real leadership in this country again that isn’t all about blame, division, racism, excuses, class envy, defeat, empty promises, and over sized government programs. The words I provided here will be the definition of our current state of our nation.

  • Butters

    The remaining citizens ruined it.

  • It’s just me

Our nation was founded by Christian immigrants seeking to build a Christian nation. Consider the founders’s writings, or the Mayflower compact, or Columbus’ intention to bring the Gospel to the East (despite His human failings in carrying this out in a loving way), or the writings of the Constitutional Debates, or the Old Deluder Satan Law (1649, Created Pubic Eduction in America, Why? Need for literacy so children could learn scripture) or the Atkens Bible (a neat edition of the scriptures for use in the public schools, early act of congress). Look this up, read it, and see if I am telling the truth. But I am.
It was build on the principals of truth and moral laws of God in the Bible. Our Government was a Christian constitutional republic with the idea being copied ancient Israel. The law applied to everyone, president and pauper alike. Where did that get us? From rag-tag colonies to the manufactuing envy of the world and the glory all of human history. It remained that way until we, the people, rejected God and His way. There really are basic revealed laws in the universe, but for a long time, we have been persuaded otherwise. Where has this gotten us? Into a welfare-warfare, tax and spend, no rules, just right nightmare with tomorrow’s forecast always a bit gloomier than today’s. Detroit is just a physical expression of human depravity stemming from our impoverished morals and humanist solutions.
Consider marriage, welfare, and family. The foundational view that made our nation what it was, was basic:Finally, the family is the basic unit of any society. Family is where values are established, children are educated and taught to be who they will become, love and safety, acceptance and responsibily, morality and the role of the husband and wife are illustrated, and the skills needed to live life skillfully are inculcated. What does a typical family today look like? Two people? Husband and wife? Love filled? Who is teaching the children? Is it the TV? Is it our savagely anti-God media or public education system? Day care? How can we afford have both parents working? the financial gain is no comparison for th e social loss. Who teaches the value system in Detroit? If we as a nation do no open our eyes and see that the “brave new world” that we have
Marriage is one man, one woman, for life. The man is to love and care for his wife, and the wife is to respect her husband and blossom under the care he shows for her.
How long has it been since marriages have looked like this in our country? Marriages like this are to be envied and sought after, but today our kids are taught the opposite everywhere they look.
Work was to be consided an act of service to be done honestly and fairly, with welfare being provided by private charity. How long has it been since churches have been kicked out of the charity roll by the welfare-forced contribution system? Private charity has the ability to discrimated between actual “need” for charity (an elderly widow with arthitis) and an able person whose lifestyle and choices are the problem (a person who choses to eat themself to obesity, or a person who would rather sit and not work, or someone who makes a lifestyle or poor choices and looks for the government to cover the bill). Remember, the hungery stomache of a man drives his hands to work? But if we remove consquences of poor choices, why would anyone work? Hmm. Bread and circus, anyone? If immoral living and the welfare/tax system used to support it has destroyed every other nation in written history, should we really expect anything different? IS THIS LOGICAL?
created is the fruit of the tree of humanism (human attempts to solve spiritual problems), then we will, no doubt, end up like Detroit, with a few violent theives ruling over the desparate masses struggling to survive in a communistic global dictatorship with the sustance and heart to continue eaten away until God finally says “Enough” and He interviens.
    The solution:
Return to God, seek to humble ourselves, and teach our selves and our children that it is Jesus that is salvation, and not our own efforts. Recognizing our own failure and recognizing God’s providence to pay for that failure and present not only a solution, but an eternity-changing relationship, is the heart of the Gospel.
Everything else falls into place quite naturally once the foundation is set on the Rock of Truth and not shifting sands of human ideology.
Perhaps there is still time enough…
