How Can We Have A Healthy Economy If Virtually Everything We Eat And Drink Is Constantly Making Us All Sick?

In the United States today, we are all being constantly bombarded by chemicals, poisons and toxins.  Virtually everything that we eat or drink makes us less healthy.  The vast majority of Americans gladly consume aspartame, fluoride, BPA, genetically-modified food, pesticides, high fructose corn syrup, pharmaceutical drugs and toxic vaccines without any concern that those substances may ruin their health.  But the truth is that we are getting sicker and sicker and sicker as a nation.  According to one recent report, the United States has dropped to 49th place in the world in overall life expectancy.  Diseases such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes are absolutely exploding.  So how in the world are we supposed to have a healthy and vibrant economy when virtually everything that we eat and drink is constantly making us sick?

Recently, my wife (who has always been extremely healthy) developed some alarming breathing problems.  She did not appear to suffer from any known medical condition, so we were completely puzzled.

Finally, we started examining what we were eating and drinking.  It turns out that she was putting some cream in her coffee that contained something known as "Polysorbate 80".  Polysorbate 80 is found in a vast array of dairy products and is even used in many vaccines.  According to Drugs.com, "difficulty breathing" is indeed one of the known side effects of Polysorbate 80.  Once my wife cut the Polysorbate 80 out of her diet, the breathing difficulties subsided.  The following is how she describes what she went through....

Prior to my recent problems, I had never been in a situation were I felt as though there was very limited air available.  When the breathing problems would flare up, I would take in deep breath after deep breath but I just couldn't get any oxygen.  My body tried to cope by constantly yawning which forced air into my lungs.  Some days it wouldn't be so bad, but on other days it was really frightening.  My breathing was extremely labored at times.  I constantly had to yawn throughout the day in order to catch a satisfying breath.  One day my breathing was really labored - I was constantly gasping for deep breaths, but I wasn't getting enough oxygen.  I was about to cry.  I felt as though I had dived to the bottom of  a deep pool and I was almost out of air.  My body was in a constant state of panic.  I felt so tired and I was worried that I may collapse at any time.  We got into the car, and I was almost ready to pass out.  We had the windows rolled down to give me the feeling of lots of oxygen, but I felt like I couldn't take any in.  Fortunately that episode eventually subsided, but there were many days when I was in agony.  You cannot imagine how horrible it is to gasp for breath and never seem to get enough.  Several incidents really scared me.  What was even more frightening was that I had no idea at the time what was causing all this.

Thankfully my wife is doing much better now, but there are thousands and thousands of others across the United States that are experiencing similar breathing problems and nobody has any answers for them.

So what are some of the other side effects of Polysorbate 80?

Well, Drugs.com says that the following are "common" side effects....

Constipation; cough; diarrhea; dizziness; headache; muscle, joint, back, or stomach pain; nausea or vomiting; pain, swelling, irritation, redness, or bruising at the injection site; unusual tiredness or weakness.

In addition, Drugs.com says that the following are severe side effects of Polysorbate 80 that an individual should seek immediate medical attention for....

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); blurred vision or vision changes; chest pain; confusion; fainting; fast or irregular heartbeat; flu-like symptoms (fever, chills, sore throat); one-sided weakness; pale skin color; redness, tenderness, or swelling of the calf; seizures; severe diarrhea, dizziness, headache, stomach pain, or vomiting; severe or persistent tiredness or weakness; slurred speech; sudden pain or numbness of an arm or leg; sudden shortness of breath; sudden trouble walking or loss of balance; swelling of the arms or legs; vision or speech problems; weight gain.

Remember, this is in countless dairy products all across the United States. Most Americans are absolutely clueless that they are pouring Polysorbate 80 into their coffee or that it is in the ice cream that they are eating.

Another major threat to our health is something called bisphenol-A (BPA).  BPA is one of the most widely used  chemicals in the entire world.  If you eat canned food or you drink bottled water you most likely have BPA in your home and you don't even know it.

According to Natural News, BPA is not only in virtually every American home, but it has also been linked to some very serious health problems....

It is used to harden plastic in everything from infant and water bottles to mobile phone and computer casings, and also to make linings for cans of food, beverages and infant formula. Yet a growing body of research has implicated the chemical as an endocrine (hormone) disruptor that can lead to cancer, birth defects, behavioral problems and other diseases.

Shouldn't someone be doing something about this?

Of course.

But the truth is that the big corporations that are pushing these chemicals are much more powerful than those who are trying to watch out for our health.

In fact, authorities all over the United States are putting one very toxic chemical into our water on purpose.

It is called fluoride, and it is being put into our water supposedly because it is good for our teeth.  What Americans are not being told is that fluoride is actually a highly toxic sedative and is causing a whole host of very serious health problems.

So exactly how dangerous is fluoride?  Well, the Fluoride Dangers blog puts it this way....

Even small amounts of fluoride consumed from tap water can damage your bones, teeth, brain, disrupt your thyroid function, lower IQ and/or cause cancer, according to evidence revealed in a groundbreaking 2006 National Research Council (NRC) fluoride report produced by a panel of experts who reviewed hundreds of published fluoride studies.

The Natural Health and Longevity Resource Center has published a list of ten of the most significant health dangers that the scientific research has shown that fluoride causes.....

1. Fluoride exposure disrupts the synthesis of collagen and leads to the breakdown of collagen in bone, tendon, muscle, skin, cartilage, lungs, kidney and trachea.

2. Fluoride stimulates granule formation and oxygen consumption in white blood cells, but inhibits these processes when the white blood cell is challenged by a foreign agent in the blood.

3. Fluoride depletes the energy reserves and the ability of white blood cells to properly destroy foreign agents by the process of phagocytosis. As little as 0.2 ppm fluoride stimulates superoxide production in resting white blood cells, virtually abolishing phagocytosis. Even micro-molar amounts of fluoride, below 1 ppm, may seriously depress the ability of white blood cells to destroy pathogenic agents.

4. Fluoride confuses the immune system and causes it to attack the body's own tissues, and increases the tumor growth rate in cancer prone individuals.

5. Fluoride inhibits antibody formation in the blood.

6. Fluoride depresses thyroid activity.

7. Fluorides have a disruptive effect on various tissues in the body.

8. Fluoride promotes development of bone cancer.

9. Fluorides cause premature aging of the human body.

10. Fluoride ingestion from mouth rinses and dentifrices in children is extremely hazardous to biological development, life span and general health.

But perhaps even more dangerous is the sweetener known as aspartame.  Today, aspartame is an ingredient in literally thousands of different food and drink products.  In fact, it is often marketed in "health products" such as diet sodas.

According to an article on Mercola.com, aspartame is one of the most toxic substances being added to our foods....

Aspartame accounts for over 75 percent of the adverse reactions to food additives reported to the FDA. Many of these reactions are very serious including seizures and death.  A few of the 90 different documented symptoms listed in the report as being caused by aspartame include: Headaches/migraines, dizziness, seizures, nausea, numbness, muscle spasms, weight gain, rashes, depression, fatigue, irritability, tachycardia, insomnia, vision problems, hearing loss, heart palpitations, breathing difficulties, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, loss of taste, tinnitus, vertigo, memory loss, and joint pain.

According to researchers and physicians studying the adverse effects of aspartame, the following chronic illnesses can be triggered or worsened by ingesting of aspartame:  Brain tumors, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, chronic fatigue syndrome, parkinson's disease, alzheimer's, mental retardation, lymphoma, birth defects, fibromyalgia, and diabetes.

According to Dr. Janet Hull, the following are known side effects of ingesting aspartame....

blindness in one or both eyes
decreased vision and/or other eye problems such as: blurring, bright flashes, squiggly lines, tunnel vision, decreased night vision

Sadly, there are thousands more toxins and chemicals that are being put into what we eat and what we drink.  The next time you go to the supermarket, just pick up a few products and start reading the labels.  You may find yourself incredibly shocked by what you find.

Does it seem like people all around you are constantly getting sick?  Well, the truth is that we have created an incredibly toxic environment for ourselves.  Diseases such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes have skyrocketed in recent years.  We like to think of ourselves as being so "advanced", but the truth is that we are constantly becoming less healthy as a nation.

It is hard to imagine any prosperous economy that is full of sick and dying people.  But if we don't stop constantly poisoning ourselves by what we eat and by what we drink our national health is going to continue to fall apart.

Just like in almost every other category, America is in a deep state of decline.  We like to think that we should be telling everyone else in the world how they should be doing things, but the truth is that our own nation is a complete and total mess.

If your own health is not what it should be, you might want to take another look at what you are eating and what you are drinking.  A small change can make a big difference.

    Sounds like the “problem-reaction-solution” modus operandi I have read about, i.e. The corporations and government(s) had a problem of disposing these toxins, so the toxins are labeled food additives–I’m sorry, preservatives, then sold to us—problem solved and it’s profitable. We react by getting sicker and sicker and then the corporate pharmaceutical companies come to the rescue with meds (that have side effects often making one sicker) than the original ailment. Go Figure!!

    There are so many things wrong on so many levels of our existence in my opinion, one reasonably might question if humans are even in control at all—sounds crazy but if I am not mistaken there’s not much that is not crazy anymore. As such, I ask, would a sapient species interested in self preservation act so comprehensively against its own survival on so many levels? The consequences of almost everything we do are negative and are piling up on us and seem almost insurmountable. Again I question, what other species on earth acts against its own self interests in such a massive way as us humans? All across the globe people are overwhelmed and one never knows now a days just how spectacular and tragic the days events/news could end up being.

    Obviously, when it comes to money and the power there are “people” among us that could careless what they do to others or what happens to other people. I have questioned for sometime now though what manner of “people” no matter what privilege and access they have, could logically think they can escape the full force of all the problems that are being unleashed. The way it looks now earth may well be virtually uninhabitable in 100yrs if we keep going the way we are. The movie, Children of Men, comes to mind just about now.

    Two personal anecdotes.

    I lived for several years in Turkey. The food was great. Fruit and vegetables had real flavor. I suggested to a Turkish friend who had spent time in America that I would like to open a Turkish restaurant in the US. She answered matter-of-factly that it wouldn’t work – it wouldn’t taste the same because I wouldn’t be able to get any real food.

    I also lived in central Asia, eating only locally produced foods. Lots of environmental problems there, but, nonetheless the food was great. When I returned to the USA I suffered from an affliction of Biblical proportions – constant farting for about a year. Not the best way to make friends and influence people. Early on, I was really worried. Then I met a Tajik woman (a doctor) who had emigrated to the US. She told me not to worry. The same had happened to her when she arrived in America, but ended after about a year. The problem, as she put it: “Your body has adjusted to eating real food. Now it’s trying to adjust to eating hormones, chemicals and other additives. Once it’s used to eating crap again, the farting will stop.”

    Well, you highlighted a few. How about metal fillings in our mouths and mercury poisoning. Nearly 85% of the world has them and here is an alarming video from YouTube which cannot be ignored.

    What a bunch of hooey. Americans live longer than ever, and older Americans look younger and healthier for their age than Americans of the same age looked a few generations ago. How many Americans in their 50′s and 60′s still have most of their teeth, for example, compared with Americans early in the 20th Century who needed dentures by their 40′s, like my impoverished Southern grandparents?

    Face it: We’ve succeeded in controlling the real threats which killed millions of young people in their youth through clean water supplies, sanitation and public health, including campaigns to discourage tobacco and hard liquor consumption, while getting us to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables. People in countries like Haiti would do anything to have these health-producing measures, and believe me, they don’t worry about “chemicals, poisons and toxins” when they have diseases like cholera, dysentery and malaria to contend with. The success in fighting the real killers has ironically freed us to worry about theoretical or low-probability “threats” from chemical which exist in such low concentrations in our environment that chemists a generation ago lacked the means to detect them.

    I consider articles like the above a sign of American decadence, the produce of people who have too much time on their hands who look for things to worry about instead of enjoying life.

    Well said. What really frustrates me is that my family members are so careless about their health. They eat a lot of processed foods that contain additives, preservatives like MSG, high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), hydrogenated fats, etc. In my opinion, HFCS and trans fats are the two worst things one can put into their body. They aren’t fit for human consumption. My family members have health problems, but never seem to consider that what they’re putting into their bodies could be causing their health problems.

    I’ll admit that I’m scrupulous to a fault. I never buy a food item without reading the packaging to see what’s in it.
    And it sure leaves very little that I can eat!

    The next time you go into a typical grocery store, go down the aisle that has crackers and cookies. Read the packaging on any product in the aisle. It seems that nearly every product has either partially-hyrogenated fat (whether it’s soybean, palm oil, etc.) or high-fructose corn syrup.

    If this S.510 passes, and I pray that it doesn’t, we may have no choice but to eat Frakenfoods from Monsanto and Con-Agra. What is this world coming to?

    The timing of this article is uncanny. Last week I went to the refrigerator for something to drink with dinner. There was nothing cold except a half gallon of egg nog, non-alcoholic, that we usually have around for the holidays. I thought “what the hell” and poured an approx. 12 oz. glass to drink with the meal. For three days afterward I had palpatations like I’ve never experienced and severely enough to believe I might be in serious trouble. A check of the ingredients now reveals the presence of polysorbate 80. Aside from the ecconomic bad news but good information this blog provides thanks on a personal note for some bad news but good information on this health matter.

    It’s a proven fact, microwaving food changes its molecular structure, thereby destroying its nutritive value. It also renders the food carcinogenic. It amazes me how many people still keep and use their microwave oven after learning the facts. They don’t deny the findings, it’s the convenience that they simply “can’t” do without. We have met the enemy…and he is us.

    talk about a rant with no basis for anything – I can’t believe how much you seem to simply want to spread uneducated fear. You always love to accuse someone or thing of being the devil while only showing one side (usually the most negative you can find) of the argument.

    Aspartame:
    I drink aspartame quite often, and that’s because:
    1 – it is the most heavily researched chemical on the planet, and nothing conclusive has ever been published and undergone proper scrutiny and peer review.
    2 – 180 calories for a cola is unjustifiable in a daily 2K calorie diet.
    3 – the risk of cancer over the long term is less then the risks and problems associated with obesity (which you never address, and is one of the major contributors, if not the greatest, to decline in health in the US)

    Fluoride:
    I spent 4 months drinking distilled water when I lived in Thailand. Within a month and a half, it felt like my teeth were going to shatter, the teeth became uber sensitive.
    Upon my return, drinking water here cured that pretty quick….I liked that.

    Summary:
    Half of your posts are about goverment asserting too much control over everything, then you come up with other posts like these in which you seem to be begging for even more government control and regulation.

    I have been conscious of these things for over 4 years now, first learning of the effects of MSG and artificial sweeteners. We started reading labels and watching out for the nasty stuff. At first my children revolted big time, but after a few months they started to come around and now they read the labels better than we do. They still hate the fact that they can’t have some of their favorite cereals but they prefer to not poison their bodies. Polysorbate 80 is a new one for me. I’ll just add it to the list of things we watch out for. We mostly eat at home these days because you just can’t trust restaurants to not put crap in their food.

    There are different reasons why people in France, Holland, Italy, Spain and a long list of other developed European countries are outliving Americans. First, the health insurance system in The Banana Republic of America (formerly the USA) is an abomination that promotes illness, premature death and disease as much as it promotes bankruptcies. I consider Blue Cross, Aetna, United and other health insurance cartels terrorist organizations because of all the Americans they kill and maim on a regular basis. Second, Americans eat a lot more processed crap (or as Gerald Celente calls it “Frankenfood”) than the average person in Continental Europe. Third, Americans don’t get nearly enough exercise. Many Americans will drive two blocks just to go to the local supermarket and get a loaf of bread; Europeans do a lot more walking. No wonder so many Americans are morbidly obese.

    When I was in Scotland and England a few years ago, I noticed that people in the U.K. were catching up to Americans in the obesity department—which no doubt has lot to do with the fact that eating habits in the U.K. have become more Americanized (more so than on the Continent). You don’t see nearly as many morbidly obese people in Rome, Paris or Madrid as you see in Glasgow or Newcastle. So in other words, the more that people in the U.K. emulate American eating habits, the younger they will die.

    On so many levels, living in The Banana Republic of America is very bad for your health. And it’s only going to get worse as the BRA becomes more and more of a Third World country.

    I checked, the coffee creamer in my house has polysorbate 60.

    Off to research I go… hoping there’s a difference, while suspecting there’s not one.

    BEcause after removing MSG under its very many different names from our diet many bad symptoms disappeared.
    From what I can tell, even the word “spices” or “natural flavorings” equals MSG.

    The tentacles of the vampire squid reach very far into all our lives.

    There is a reason why there are expiration dates on bottled water. (Look for the “Best by” date stamped on your favorite water brand. On the side, near the bottom of the bottle, or close to the top or neck. It’s on there.)

    It sounds silly at first (how can bottled water turn sour or bad?) But it has to do with the chemicals in the plastic bottles. After a while, all that BPA and other components that make up the plastic, will begin to break down and leech into the water, and then into your stomach when you take a gulp of refreshing bottled water a year from now.

    Now it’s starting to make sense.

    Food in general, and soft drinks in particular, don’t taste anything like they did back in the 1970′s.

    When I was a kid, way back in… um.. 1977 (sigh), I loved Coke, Dr. Pepper and 7-Up. I can hardly stand them anymore. Maybe it has to do with the whole “New Coke” thing back in 1985, who knows? But today’s “Classic Coke” is NOT Classic Coke. Trust me, it isn’t.

    And then I decided to take a look at a plastic bottle of 2010 Classic Choke. (Back in ’77, you could get a glass bottle of Coke for 50 cents at the local store. And it truly was “the pause that refreshes”.) What did I discover? High fructose corn syrup and aspartame, among other chemicals. No wonder my once beloved Coke tastes so different.

    I had stomach problems through highschool. I took prevacid and it helped — for a while. The problem did end up coming back, though wasn’t quite as bad.

    I moved to Japan, ran out of prevacid, had a little bit of a rough transition, and then was fine. My diet had changed, I was off the pills, and I was feeling great.

    I now live in the states again, with my wife (Japanese). Our diet has not changed — but our ingredients have. The problem is back. I got severely depressed when my newfound “doctor” prescribed me prilosec. A week after cutting those, and my mental health was back to normal.

    People, America is poisoning you with the food you consume, and then poisoning you more when you try to fix the problem with “medicine.”

    I was in terrible health–when I say “terrible health,” I mean I could barely move. Pain killers didn’t help. As a last resort, I started taking vitamins and supplements. There was an immediate improvement! I also do not drink tap water; I only drink distilled water.

    It is a known fact that our processed food and depleted soils no longer provide us with the nutrition we need. Obviously Mark Plus has never read a book.

    By the way, new studies show that changing the diets of autistic children greatly improves their condition. It is now thought that these kids are adversely affected by pollution, toxins in the environment, and allergies. This is what we get for letting the corporations buy Congress.

    I don’t know why libertarians would worry about pesticides in their diets and want to buy organic produce. Libertarian websites like Reason magazine and the Cato Institute, both of which also publish pro-Ron Paul propaganda, have published article after article over the years about the wonders of pesticides and the irrationality of fearing them in our food supply.     What a load of crap. Every year life expectancies increase. Perhaps the HFCS is making us healthier. As for the U.S. being 49 in life expectancies you need to understand most countries hedge the data a little. And of course the numbers are so close that there is no significant statistical difference anyway. This misinformation and pseudo-science is crazy and doesn’t help the nuts who think you have to drink distilled water or that processed food kills you. It just reinforces their superstition and denial. And autism is not caused by allergies, DUH!

    Try finding a pack of gum not laced with Aspartame,it ain’t easy!

    Adams brands,such as Blackjack,Beeman’s and Clove are still made with sugar.
    So is Bazooka!

    Recently I found a 100% natural brand of gum called : Glee Gum
    It is the only brand I found still made from natural chicle. All the others(even those still made with sugar) use a synthetic substitute.

    I will say this once. Anyone who thinks our processed food we buy in the store is actually good for them is an IDIOT. People do live longer only because we have high tech medicine, this doesn’t mean we are healthy.

    This article isn’t a rant is is the truth. Our food is crap, face the facts. Doesn’t anyone think that perhaps natural real food would be actually better for them then crap in a box? That’s what your eating food that has no nutrition except some energy and maybe a few nutrients.

    You could easily do several articles about this. Maybe a good choice would be to write about what can make you feel better (short of moving to a different country).

    I’m discovering sprouting. It’s something everyone can easily grow for themselves, even in a small living space or in winter. You can grow 100% organic. Sprouts are maxed-out with live enzymes, vitamins, phytonutrients, and lots of other things the body needs. Even organic fruits & veggies begin to lose their nutritive value after being picked and sitting on the store shelves. Sprouts are still alive and offer their full nutrition.

    I started traveling to Ukraine in 2006. The very first trip I noticed I had substantially more energy, slept better, ate less and lost a reasonable amount of weight while I was there.

    The difference was the food. It was fresh and tasted wonderful. Veggies that I won’t eat in the US, taste great in Ukraine. Cucumbers for instance. One thing I noticed is that the fruits and veggies are not hybridized and are usually grown near where they are consumed. Except for the stuff like bananas and oranges.

    All of this coming from a diagnosed narcoleptic.
