I'm skeptical of a lot of these statistics. By the McKinney-Vento Act's definition of a "homeless" child or youth, my 16-year old nephew is "homeless" because he's "sharing the housing of other persons due to . . . economic hardship." The "other person" would be me in my $400,000 suburban home-with-a-view, and he's been living here for more than three years, eats like a horse, attends private school, belongs to a gym, buys new shoes just about every month, has more electronic gadgets than I can list, and grudgingly will do an hour's worth of yardwork every couple of weeks if I nag him for two hours. (I provide the shelter and food, his parents, who "can't afford" to house and feed him, shower him with the rest and won't allow the cut-off of privileges for failing to do his chores or show any responsibility.) The taste of true homelessness he's going to get starting the day after his eighteenth birthday will do him a world of good. Then, since he's basically a good if spoiled kid, he'll make the connection between work and money, and pull himself out of poverty over the course of a few years, just as his older sisters did. That's if government busy-bodies don't interfere too much by "helping" him.

I'm sure there are some children who are homeless by a meaningful definition of homeless, but a half-million? Baloney!

i've been reading some of the responses here. amazing how some people have been duped. wages have been going down over the past decade & more. then, many good paying jobs have been off-shored. manufacturing has been moving out since the 60s. over population? you can comfortably fit the world's population in the state of texas. education is no guarantee at all. if there are no well-paying jobs to be had, education isn't going to get you anywhere. i've always had work regardless, but have had to take work that paid less just to keep working. (and all of those jobs took aggressive relentless searching.) now i'm making 20% of what i made in 1996. luckily, i speak spanish, & since there has been an over-abundance of latin americans streaming over the border, i have a job. thank god they came not knowing english, otherwise, i'd be up the creek. (just an aside: the illegal immigration isn't just coming from latin america, but also from russia, czech republic, africa, & elsewhere. i know this because of the work i do.) this crisis won't end until the entire face of the planet has been reorganized. the population will be culled since less of us are needed. if you want to get of view of the future, crack a book: brave new world revisited, 1984, the impact of science on society, agenda 21, millenium, the technological society, plato's republic. everything happens for a reason. call it social engineering.

For many years, my wife & I have run a small non-profit charity in Dayton, Ohio. We help the needy with food, clothing, information, etc. Please visit at www.AVoiceForTheCommonwealth.org
Distressing to see so many (including my wife & myself) who were formerly middle-class reduced to probable permanent poverty.
As someone who, during the past decade, has experienced downsizing from a job of two decades, living in my car, no health insurance, and bankruptcy of a small business during the economic melt-down, we know firsthand how tough life can be in the so-called "greatest nation on earth."
Now, as Congress prepares to throw the long-term unemployed to the wolves, prepare for another economic drop as those unemployed default on their bills.

God help us all! The empire has to collapse-it is inevitable because we forgot what this precious life is really about it. It's not about having the most and the best. It is about the heart-love, compassion, integrity and all those decent human virtues we have forgotten and replaced with greed, lust, selfishness and so on.

The collapse will bring us together again (the world) and make us remember why we are here.

They say that right now there are 2 girls being born to every boy-not too surprising as this world needs a lot more feminine energy. it is men who are waging wars, molesting children (priests, boy scout leaders, etc. etc.)addicted to porn, inflict domestic violence on their partners, murdering their families and children. What in the hell is going on with men?

Light will win if we all get back to our hearts. If we continue our selfish and self-righteous ways there is no hope.

The old saying "walk a mile in my shoes" addresses the judgmental and self-righteous people who are part of the problem and not the solution.

I live in Canada and, thanks be to God, things are much better here. We simply haven't suffered as much from the economic downturn, have a good social 'safety net', and simply don't have to worry about unexpected medical expenses bankrupting us. Let's hope that continues!

That said, it is both terrifying and immensely saddening to see a great neighbour slowly imploding on our doorstep.

For what its worth, I think that Americans (and Canadians and the British, for that matter) need to get their priorities right before anything else can get put right.

PRIORITY # 1: Get back to God (that's right, the God who abundantly blessed your forefathers): "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." - 2 Chronicles 7:14 (KJ)

PRIORITY # 2: Begin to practically love and care for each other; as has been already said here, You're all in this together.

PRIORITY # 3: Rise up en masse and peacefully demand that the billions now being wasted on overseas 'pipeline wars' and the phony 'War on Terror' be used instead to help rebuild America.

PRIORITY # 4: Rediscover the individual courage, integrity, independence, resilience and self-reliance that made America great in the past - and that can do so again!

I am truly disappointed at the angry attitude many are directed at the unemployed and homeless.

As this blog has covered, the bottom 50% of the country holds a mere 1% share of wealth. Meditate on that for a moment. And then consider that over a third is held by less than 1% of the population.

It is not the social safety net that is the culprit per se; sure it did lull people into thinking that the government would always be there to bail them out.

However the true problem is the unbelievable consolidation of wealth, corporate power, and the undeniable merger of big business and government.

As executives are scheming new ways to pad their bonuses, like dehumanizing Chinese slaves as in the case of the ultra compenstated twit Steve Jobs, there are simply fewer and fewer opportunties for jobs.

Some say, well then start a business you lazy #&$ ! Okay, sure, that only takes about $25,000 bare minimum (really more like $75,000 for any glimmer of hope) plus some way to pay basic expenses of food, rent, and water.

Sure, I guess some tough guys can take the position that those of us struggling should join the military (ie become economic conscripts) and fight endless wars for deluded maniacs while chancing being experimented on like the Gulf War I vets. But even if people take you up on this offer (many do), this does not solve the problem of systemic joblessness in America. Somehow, the soldier has to be paid, have his weapon provided, and truck fueled.

At the end of the day, someone has to pay for all those things in taxes. If Americans are working 10 bucks an hour, I have news for you: cheese gonna gets eated up real fast yo.

Now with this catestrophic oil spill (and deafening silence from the phoney environmental groups), the Gulf region is an economic wasteland. Tourism and fishing are dead industries for this area, so we are now facing a potential for a massive Detroit on the Gulf Coast.

We need to trust in God first. Economically, we need to make stuff here again. But don't wait for Congress to act any time soon, they're investigating vital things like a candidate being offered a political job and steriods in MLB.

He, you Americans, you better start to get better in regard to your education. Heard the story of a Dutch young man.Was put in grade 12 after coming over from Holland. He was bored sick as he thought it was grade 8. Other stories you get is,that Americans can't get in universities in Europe as their level of education is way to low. Young students after leaving school speak 3 or 4 languages. Dutch, English, German, or France. You Americans have to be aware that the world will leave you behind in science en commerce. Look at the Chinese and the Indians they study their but off in order not to disappoint their parents and keep the family honor. All you Americans are fighting wit your teachers and students. You guy's are the only nation in the world that are having 800 bases. For what?? Close them down and spent it on EDUCATION!!

Given the twisted nature of "Lies, Damn lies and Statistics", truth is that America has been living hell for well nigh 50% of it's population for a long time now.

"Food" stamps. What is this food you get from them anyways? Chemical packed preserved food? Sprayed and irridiated food? rGBH'ed milk? Cruelly slaughtered, farmed meat? Sorry folks, truth it is a terrible life you are saying good bye to, tough as it is for all of us to see, be and behold. Really sad. Wonderful people, undone.

A possible solution to the world's problems.

The term and meaning of a Resource-Based Economy was originated by Jacque Fresco. It is a system in which all goods and services are available without the use of money, credits, barter or any other system of debt or servitude. All resources become the common heritage of all of the inhabitants, not just a select few. The premise upon which this system is based is that the Earth is abundant with plentiful resource; our practice of rationing resources through monetary methods is irrelevant and counter productive to our survival.

Modern society has access to highly advanced technology and can make available food, clothing, housing and medical care; update our educational system; and develop a limitless supply of renewable, non-contaminating energy. By supplying an efficiently designed economy, everyone can enjoy a very high standard of living with all of the amenities of a high technological society.

A resource-based economy would utilize existing resources from the land and sea, physical equipment, industrial plants, etc. to enhance the lives of the total population. In an economy based on resources rather than money, we could easily produce all of the necessities of life and provide a high standard of living for all.

Consider the following examples: At the beginning of World War II the US had a mere 600 or so first-class fighting aircraft. We rapidly overcame this short supply by turning out more than 90,000 planes a year. The question at the start of World War II was: Do we have enough funds to produce the required implements of war? The answer was No, we did not have enough money, nor did we have enough gold; but we did have more than enough resources. It was the available resources that enabled the US to achieve the high production and efficiency required to win the war. Unfortunately this is only considered in times of war.

In a resource-based economy all of the world's resources are held as the common heritage of all of Earth's people, thus eventually outgrowing the need for the artificial boundaries that separate people. This is the unifying imperative.

We must emphasize that this approach to global governance has nothing whatever in common with the present aims of an elite to form a world government with themselves and large corporations at the helm, and the vast majority of the world's population subservient to them. Our vision of globalization empowers each and every person on the planet to be the best they can be, not to live in abject subjugation to a corporate governing body.

Our proposals would not only add to the well being of people, but they would also provide the necessary information that would enable them to participate in any area of their competence. The measure of success would be based on the fulfillment of one's individual pursuits rather than the acquisition of wealth, property and power.

At present, we have enough material resources to provide a very high standard of living for all of Earth's inhabitants. Only when population exceeds the carrying capacity of the land do many problems such as greed, crime and violence emerge. By overcoming scarcity, most of the crimes and even the prisons of today's society would no longer be necessary.

A resource-based economy would make it possible to use technology to overcome scarce resources by applying renewable sources of energy, computerizing and automating manufacturing and inventory, designing safe energy-efficient cities and advanced transportation systems, providing universal health care and more relevant education, and most of all by generating a new incentive system based on human and environmental concern.

Many people believe that there is too much technology in the world today, and that technology is the major cause of our environmental pollution. This is not the case. It is the abuse and misuse of technology that should be our major concern. In a more humane civilization, instead of machines displacing people they would shorten the workday, increase the availability of goods and services, and lengthen vacation time. If we utilize new technology to raise the standard of living for all people, then the infusion of machine technology would no longer be a threat.

A resource-based world economy would also involve all-out efforts to develop new, clean, and renewable sources of energy: geothermal; controlled fusion; solar; photovoltaic; wind, wave, and tidal power; and even fuel from the oceans. We would eventually be able to have energy in unlimited quantity that could propel civilization for thousands of years. A resource-based economy must also be committed to the redesign of our cities, transportation systems, and industrial plants, allowing them to be energy efficient, clean, and conveniently serve the needs of all people.

What else would a resource-based economy mean? Technology intelligently and efficiently applied, conserves energy, reduces waste, and provides more leisure time. With automated inventory on a global scale, we can maintain a balance between production and distribution. Only nutritious and healthy food would be available and planned obsolescence would be unnecessary and non-existent in a resource-based economy.

As we outgrow the need for professions based on the monetary system, for instance lawyers, bankers, insurance agents, marketing and advertising personnel, salespersons, and stockbrokers, a considerable amount of waste will be eliminated. Considerable amounts of energy would also be saved by eliminating the duplication of competitive products such as tools, eating utensils, pots, pans and vacuum cleaners. Choice is good. But instead of hundreds of different manufacturing plants and all the paperwork and personnel required to turn out similar products, only a few of the highest quality would be needed to serve the entire population. Our only shortage is the lack of creative thought and intelligence in ourselves and our elected leaders to solve these problems. The most valuable, untapped resource today is human ingenuity.

With the elimination of debt, the fear of losing one's job will no longer be a threat This assurance, combined with education on how to relate to one another in a much more meaningful way, could considerably reduce both mental and physical stress and leave us free to explore and develop our abilities.

If the thought of eliminating money still troubles you, consider this: If a group of people with gold, diamonds and money were stranded on an island that had no resources such as food, clean air and water, their wealth would be irrelevant to their survival. It is only when resources are scarce that money can be used to control their distribution. One could not, for example, sell the air we breathe or water abundantly flowing down from a mountain stream. Although air and water are valuable, in abundance they cannot be sold.

Money is only important in a society when certain resources for survival must be rationed and the people accept money as an exchange medium for the scarce resources. Money is a social convention, an agreement if you will. It is neither a natural resource nor does it represent one. It is not necessary for survival unless we have been conditioned to accept it as such.

A planned and well engineered economic collapse is underway. By the end of 2010 we'll be in a full blown "Mother of ALL Depressions". The catastrophies facing the US will keep becoming bigger and unprecedented. GOD is punishing America for its sins. The days of Empire are coming to an end..the party is over now!

Vitriolic judgment of your fellow man... or more likely woman, goes nowhere. It says more about you and your prejudices than it does about her. The reason one in five children is below the poverty line? It is because this country leaves behind its single mothers, and has been doing so for decades. In my sixty years I have NEVER met a single mother that "took advantage" of the system - do you know why that is? It is because there is nothing to take advantage of. Because the entire ridiculous system is stacked against her from the start, and idiots who post their ignorant assumptions in the Internet only serve to perpetuate her and her children's suffering. For those of you who think there is money in claiming poverty, I challenge you to try it. Spend a day in her shoes and do it honestly. You would be, and should be, ashamed of yourselves afterward.
Bob, since you seem unable to comprehend, amazingly enough, babies don't just "pop out" on their own. It actually takes two to make one.
Laura, you must be happy you never made the mistake of trusting someone not to divorce you while your kids were young. Or hey, how about you check out the child support enforcement statistics? Now, how about you lay off the poisonous judgment of women who are struggling to raise their children in this impossible situation? You people are so busy condemning people for making "mistakes" - are you so worried that you might not be perfect yourselves?
