scary..there are thousands upon thousands of homeless people that are living underground beneath the streets of major U.S. cities. It is happening in Las Vegas, it is happening in New York City and it is even happening in Kansas City. As the economy crumbles, poverty in the United States is absolutely exploding and so is homelessness.In the tunnels, their world is one of malt liquor, tight spaces, schizophrenic neighbors, hunger and spells of heat and cold. Travolta and the others eat fairly well, living on a regimented schedule of restaurant leftovers, dumped each night at different times around the neighborhood above his foreboding home. If you are poor, the United States can be an incredibly cold and cruel place. Mercy and compassion are in very short supply..

God bless you for your articles. Thank you for speaking compassionately about the homeless. So many people are hateful to the poor and homeless. I wonder what would happen if all of the money spent on prison was spent on job training and education instead? In the book “Dewey-The small town library cat” the author describes how she ended up in the welfare office. Welfare sent her to college. Welfare was paid back, and then some, as this woman held a job in a library and paid much more in taxes than it cost welfare to send her to college. Why the US stopped “teaching people to fish” is beyond me. Then, there are college educated people that can not find jobs because there are none to be found. Instead of judging others and looking down our noses at others, we need to ask ourselves how we would want to be treated if it were us in that situation. In these times, who knows when it will be us? If one professes to be a Christian, ask one’s self how Jesus treated the hungry, the poor, the prostitute, the sick. Did Jesus judge those people or did He treat them with compassion and kindness? True Christians should mirror Jesus, as He is our example. Remember that the Statue of Liberty specifically says “Give me your poor.”

I know for a fact (having been there) that the gov pays for illegals to stay in shelters and not on streets. They have been there for years without question. Americans on the other hand must pay at least $200 per month for the “privilege” of staying in a shelter, where showers, food and clothing, and a dry bed are given.
