Why do I keep reading articles about pending economic collapses from several years ago ??? Maybe because people keep writing them, they don't come true and they come up in my searches. Gold was supposed to be 2500 dollars by now. Damn if that didn't pan out. Currency wars.... hasn't happened yet. Weak US dollar.... nope. High inflation, high gas prices .... damn wrong again. Exploding deficits, stagflation. That would be strike 10 or 11 or something, if baseball allowed that. Hmmm.... And OSU won the national title, in a playoff, after they didn't deserve to be there. Damn. So many predictions. So many people who are wrong! ;-)

William.. (I like that name, it was my husband's name)....
.. You are right. Nonetheless I have a comment to add.
I AM "leaving" just as soon as I can... but I would not take one of those reptile skum bags with me if somebody paid me 20 million dollars IN GOLD~!
.. I am leaving because I am 75 years old and I have owned a beautiful 43 acres if coffee country land in the cool mountains of Central America since 1997.... kept the taxes paid all these years, and although my dear husband crossed over and we never got to retire there, I have finally saved up enough so that I think I can get some steel shipping containers and start putting together a home in a safe haven country.
The US is NOT a place that any "useless eater of 75 years" is going to want to try to stay... Let us be realistic about this!
Things in the US are going to get a whole LOT worse before there will be any respite. You know it and I know it.
.
Therefore, for the "useless old people" who are already targeted by ObamaCare regulations for an early demise.... like me, there IS NO room for "America First"....
So, for that sector of your post, I disagree. It is time to make like a tree and "leaf" if you can.
Like the C&W song from the 80's.. "You gotta know when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em"..!!!
I've tried and tried to get somebody to "go in with me" in moving to a new quiet peaceful home... but nobody seems to be able to see what I see coming at all of us. At least not enough to help out with any money... so like the "Little Red Hen" .. I will do it all myself.

11% unemployment rate is incorrect. 83 million out of work divided by 238 million total working age = 34.8%. And it's up to 50% among blacks. And you wonder why there is unrest? Pre-Hitler Germany was not this bad!

@ gary 2 As for the wealthy paying the same in taxes you are very wrong I Went from working a for others to owning my own construction company and I also owned my own trucking company. When I worked as an employ I did pay out almost 27% which came to a total of almost $9500.00 then as a company I was able to claim so many deductions I only paid around 4.5% per dollar earned. And made a lot more. Now all the work I use have is now gone the fuel cost more than the freight will pay to a small time business and no housing means no work so I sent fifteen men looking for work elsewhere. I had hoped that I would be able to keep paying $5 per hour more to each of my employees as I was doing. I was also hoping to pick up more freight contracts but there is nothing out there for a start up company to make a penny on any more. I also watched my brother lose a million dollar construction company. Now I am a stay at home Dad and my wife works part time.

David- Good observations. The answer is obviously multi-faceted. However, the main part of the solution is we have to have MASSIVE inflation. And make no mistake, we WILL get massive inflation, as the government has taken on not just massive amounts of debt via selling trillions of long term (20 and 30 maturities) treasury bonds, the largest buyer of which is the Chinese government.

Now, add in about $15 Trillion of unfunded liabilities that are beginning to come due as the Baby Boomer population is now retiring to the tune of 10,000 per DAY, and will keep up that pace for the next 18 years.

Not only WILL we have inflation, we MUST have inflation. And the government already has broken the seal on taxing 'the rich people' and their social security checks....that's a good one...taxing someone on the repayment to them of money that was a repayment of a tax they paid in previous years!

By bringing on inflation, we will pay today's and yesterday's debts with less valued dollars of tomorrow. Not that I agree with it, but that is the situation. It is, imo, beyond either political party's capabilities to be able to solve.

IMO, we will see the price of gold and commodities absolutely sky rocket up at some point. I don't know if it will by hyper inflation like what was seen in the Weimar Republic (google that if you are not familiar with it and study it deeply...the conditions that led to it's rise and ultimate failure will not be unfamiliar to you. )

Obviously, one way to combat, or at least lessen the effects of the coming inflation is to buy gold or at least get some exposure to it. I am no gold bug, nor a 'whacko'. I am in the professional investments field and simply have one motive...to preserve my clients' wealth, and secondarily, to grow it. I remember when I first got in the industry in 1992, people that bought gold were generally thought to be wacko's and the like, thinking the economy was going to explode any minute and they needed 5 year's food supply buried in an underground secret bunker. Now I'm not so sure that ultimately, that might not be all that bad of an idea.

As the saying goes, 'Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it.' And along those same lines, but more directly involving my business, "The four most dangerous words are 'this time its different.'"

(and on one final note, while AAPL stock continues to soar, the Apple of yesteryear, MSFT, announced their first quarterly loss this week. I cannot tell you how many times I've heard '...but AAPL is different from every other company today or in history...'
