Why Are Millions Of Americans Preparing For Doomsday?

Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on Google+Share on LinkedInShare on StumbleUponEmail this to someone

All over America, there are millions of Americans that are quietly preparing for doomsday.  They are turning spare rooms into long-term food storage pantries, they are planting survival gardens, they are converting their homes over to alternative sources of energy, they are taking self-defense courses and they are stocking up on just about anything you can imagine.  They are called “preppers”, and their numbers have absolutely exploded in recent years.  In fact, you might be living next door to one and never even realize it.  According to a recent Daily Mail article, there are approximately 3 million preppers in the United States today.  Others believe that the true number is significantly higher than that.  This movement has become so popular that there are now even television shows being done about preppers.  The most popular is probably “Doomsday Preppers” on the National Geographic Channel.  This movement is still growing and is not going to go away any time soon.  In fact, as the world continues to become even more unstable it is likely that a lot more Americans will find themselves becoming preppers in the years ahead.

So what exactly are all these people so concerned about?  Exactly why are there millions of Americans that are feverishly preparing for doomsday?

Well, the truth is that you will never find two preppers that are exactly alike.  Some are deeply concerned about the potential for natural disasters and believe that we are now entering into a time when there will be catastrophic earth changes.  Other preppers believe that terrorism is the most significant threat to our way of life.  Killer pandemics, an EMP attack, World War III, martial law, solar megastorms, asteroid strikes and societal chaos are some of the other things that some preppers are worried about.

Of course an economic collapse is one of the biggest concerns for preppers, and without a doubt the U.S. economy is deeply troubled.  A collapse of the financial system would change all of our lives permanently.

But it isn’t just preppers that are concerned about these things.

A recent survey conducted by National Geographic asked Americans the following question….

“Which of the following, if any, do you think might happen in the United States in the next 25 years? Please choose all that apply.”

These were the results….

Significant Earthquake 64%
Significant Hurricane 63%
Terrorist Attack 55%
Financial Collapse 51%
Significant Blackout 37%
Pandemic, Such as From a Super-Virus 29%
Nuclear Fallout 14%
None of These 13%

Obviously there are a whole lot of people out there that feel as though we are heading for some really bad stuff.

So if hard times are coming, why not prepare for them?

After all, none of us want to end up like the poor people of New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.  Large numbers of people were herded into the Superdome and food and water ran out really fast.  There was rampant looting of stores and people were shooting each other in the streets.  It was mass chaos.

The following is what one Australian blogger experienced while staying in the Superdome during Hurricane Katrina….

Last night was horrendous. I heard shouting, and drinks machines being smashed. There’s no sanitation and it’s so smelly. My hair is greasy and I feel a wreck. There are crack alleys among the maze of corridors. The lights are broken in the loos which, as well as being disgusting, have become dangerous, so we now only go as a big group.

More people are arriving, and the dome is like a refugee camp. I see two soldiers carrying a corpse and we hear there are more dead in the basement.

As an article in the New York Times from that time period detailed, food and water were in very short supply and those cramped into the Superdome were rapidly becoming impatient….

Desperation was in the air. Danielle Shelby tugged at a reporter’s arm. “I have a handicapped daughter,” she said. “She’s over there with her wheelchair. She’s hot. We don’t have any water. I’m afraid she’s going to have a seizure.”

Others crowded around. “I’ve been in the food line twice, and every time I get to the front they tell me they don’t have any left,” said Juanita McFerrin, 80.

Later on in that same article, we are told that there were fights, rapes and at least one suicide in the Superdome during that time….

It got worse. Ms. Rousell recalled hearing a loud bang Tuesday afternoon as the body of a man slapped the concrete at the edge of the football field in a fatal suicidal plunge, after he apparently learned that his home had been destroyed. Others told of fights that broke out in food lines, and of a husband and wife who slugged each other in a wild argument.

Several residents said they had heard of children being raped, though it was not clear whether anyone reported such incidents to the authorities, and no officials could be found who could confirm the accounts.

To get an even better idea of what life in New Orleans was like in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, just check out this video.

Within just a few days food, water and supplies started pouring into New Orleans and things started slowly getting back to normal, but imagine what things would look like in this country if we had to deal with a national disaster that stretched on for months or even years?

Many preppers are not taking any chances.  Many are absolutely determined to be able to take care of their families and friends no matter what the years ahead may bring.

ABC News recently profiled one prepper named Tim Ralston….

Tim Ralston, a married father of two from Arizona, is one such “prepper.”

“There’s a lot of different things that could happen,” Ralston said. “For me, I look at prepping as kind of like insurance. You have car insurance, health insurance, life insurance.”

Call it Apocalypse insurance. Ralston turned his family’s two-car garage into a staging area. Inside is a trailer, which he keeps packed and ready to go at all times, stockpiles of freeze-dried food, including cartons of canned chicken with a shelf life of 15 years, survival gear, such as a system for purifying polluted water, first aid kits and lots of weapons and ammunition. His son has his own AK-47.

Some preppers are going to the extreme and are spending huge amounts of money on their prepping.

CNN recently profiled one Australian prepper that has spent about $350,000 preparing for doomsday….

Bast has spent about $5,000 on stockpiles of food and water, and $11,000 on equipment including gas cookers, generators, batteries, water purifiers and solar power. He also purchased roughly an acre of land that’s a 75-minute drive from Melbourne and 1,500 feet above sea level (in order to stay high and dry in case of a flood or tsunami). He has built a house there, as well as a bunker to serve as his “safe spot” in the event of an emergency. Together, the land, buildings and bunker have cost him a total of about $330,000.

He’s also spent $10,000 on an 8-year old Toyota HiLux pickup truck to drive to his safe spot.

But the truth is that prepping does not have to be expensive.

The key is to start by focusing on the five basics….

1) Food

2) Water

3) Shelter

4) Energy

5) Self-Defense

There are some practical things that just about anyone can do even if you don’t have a lot of money.

For example, when you go to the store try to pick up a few extra items that are on sale and add them to your supplies.  If you rotate your food supplies, they won’t go bad.

In addition, just about anyone can plant a garden.  Often fruits and vegetables are some of the most expensive items at the grocery store, and so growing a garden can end up saving you a lot of money.

Get educated.  There are dozens of prepper websites out there where you can get an education in prepping for free.  The following are a few examples of some of the excellent prepper websites that are out there today….

The truth is that our world is becoming increasingly unstable in a whole bunch of different ways and we all need to learn how to prepare for the difficult years ahead.

As the economy continues to fall apart, America is going to become a very heartless place.  You don’t want to be caught in the middle of societal chaos without a plan.

None of us should be relying on the government to save us when things hit the fan.  We all saw what happened after Hurricane Katrina.  Those that were depending on the government were deeply disappointed.

We should all try to become as independent of the system as we can, because the system is failing.  In the years ahead there might not be anybody to help you and your family, so you need to be working hard right now to ensure that you and your family will be taken care of.

Yes, as you may have guessed by now, I am a prepper too.  My wife and I moved to an entirely different state and totally changed our lifestyle to prepare for what is coming.

Hopefully this article will inspire many more Americans to prepare for what is coming.  A great economic collapse is on the horizon and time is rapidly running out.

  • I knew my days living in the wilderness as a survival instructor were over when I got married a few years ago. So when I sold my place in the country and moved into my wife’s home, I used the proceeds to buy secluded remote acreage on which I built an off-grid retreat.

My motivations were to own at least one mortgage-free home as I had been mortgage free for over a decade and also to have somewhere to go to clear my head when I had enough of the city. Since my wife and child would be joining me at times, it had to have all the comforts of home like a kitchen, hot showers, and an indoor toilet.

The retreat has progressed to become a safe haven within a secluded community where we could stay a couple years on stored provisions alone. As long as one of us has a job, we will stay in town, but when the income stream vanishes so will we.

  • Michael:

You don’t have to publish this. I am curious on your thoughts on the 4 year or so highs on the Dow and overall stock market. Today Cramer said we are definetly not in recession. Full recovery. Seems to make some sense anyway. Just want your thoughts.

    • Michael

The stock market is not a good indicator of economic health. It has been pumped up with a lot of funny money from the Federal Reserve.

To learn why I believe that we are not in an economic recovery, see this article….

    • Benjik

Jim Cramer is consistently overly optimistic and has actually cost private investors millions of dollars over the years with his snake-oil type of bad financial advice. The term “hopium” was made for this guy because that’s all he sells.

  • Ranger

Excellent article, nice summary, to the point. I will pass it on to a newbie prepper that I am helping get started. Thank you for this article.

Just curious what state you moved too?

I think 3 million preppers in the U.S. is a VERY conservative number. There has been an explosion of local prepper/homesteading organizations around the country as of late. A quick Craigslist search in our immediate area turned up 4 different meetings for such groups this month alone, and we are in a very sparsely populated area. Almost everyone we know has “prepped” in way or another, be it in food, firearms/ammunition, sustainable living, etc. I would wager that more than half of the population is prepping in some fashion.

On a personal level we are growing a garden about 5 times bigger than we ever have before, raising rabbits for a supplementary meat source, have built a rainwater collection system, built a rudimentary greenhouse and converted part of our basement into a root cellar, just to name a few. This was all done at a very minimal cost.

As the article stated, we’ve all seen how effective the government really is at disaster relief following Katrina, and that was just ONE city. On a national scale the majority of us really would be on our own. What would that look like?! God willing we’ll never find out, but I’d rather PREP than PERISH.

In the meantime, may peace and prosperity be bestowed upon you all. God Bless, Peace Out, Live Long & Prosper, May the Force Be With You, Be Well John Spartan…… 🙂

  • kwark

Lots of preppers but in my experience there are FAR more totally unprepared for ANY kind of electrical, food, or gasoline supply disruption. Not just lacking enough food for more than a few days but psychologically unprepared for anything out of the ordinary. In the first oil-embargo of the 70’s I “got” to sit in the que for gas (that’s what teenage boys are for) and was witness to SEVERAL fights when the pumps ran dry with 30 cars waiting to buy their allotted 10 gallons. As things have deteriorated over the last 5 or 6 years, among other things, what comes to mind are those fights and the feelings of “what the hell is going on?”. It’s clear that we are in a permanent situation where we’re never very far from ugliness at the neighborhood gas station, the grocery store and so on . . . Those alone are enough to get me working on ways to make my family and neighborhood as cooperative and self-reliant as we can be.

The Boy Scouts had it right: Be Prepared.

The people who are laughing at you now, as you stock up on canned goods and so forth? Don’t pay any attention to them. People laughed at Noah as he was building that ark. These folks who are laughing at you now, will be begging for your help when things get Really, Really Bad.

(A friendly reminder: Hurricane season is less than 3 months away.)

      “The Ant and the Grasshopper”
      by Aesop

Once there lived an ant and a grasshopper in a grassy meadow.

All day long the ant would work hard, collecting grains of wheat from the farmer’s field far away. She would hurry to the field every morning, as soon as it was light enough to see by, and toil back with a heavy grain of wheat balanced on her head. She would put the grain of wheat carefully away in her larder, and then hurry back to the field for another one. All day long she would work, without stop or rest, scurrying back and forth from the field, collecting the grains of wheat and storing them carefully in her larder.

The grasshopper would look at her and laugh. ‘Why do you work so hard, dear ant?’ he would say. ‘Come, rest awhile, listen to my song. Summer is here, the days are long and bright. Why waste the sunshine in labour and toil?’

The ant would ignore him, and head bent, would just hurry to the field a little faster. This would make the grasshopper laugh even louder. ‘What a silly little ant you are!’ he would call after her. ‘Come, come and dance with me! Forget about work! Enjoy the summer! Live a little!’ And the grasshopper would hop away across the meadow, singing and dancing merrily.

Summer faded into autumn, and autumn turned into winter. The sun was hardly seen, and the days were short and grey, the nights long and dark. It became freezing cold, and snow began to fall.

The grasshopper didn’t feel like singing any more. He was cold and hungry. He had nowhere to shelter from the snow, and nothing to eat. The meadow and the farmer’s field were covered in snow, and there was no food to be had. ‘Oh what shall I do? Where shall I go?’ wailed the grasshopper. Suddenly he remembered the ant. ‘Ah – I shall go to the ant and ask her for food and shelter!’ declared the grasshopper, perking up. So off he went to the ant’s house and knocked at her door. ‘Hello ant!’ he cried cheerfully. ‘Here I am, to sing for you, as I warm myself by your fire, while you get me some food from that larder of yours!’

The ant looked at the grasshopper and said, ‘All summer long I worked hard while you made fun of me, and sang and danced. You should have thought of winter then! Find somewhere else to sing, grasshopper! There is no warmth or food for you here!’ And the ant shut the door in the grasshopper’s face.

It is wise to worry about tomorrow today.

      • Emily

Today the story would be told with a different ending. The grasshopper would go to the ant, kill the ant and take over her retreat. this would prove that a gun in hand is worth all the gold in the world.

        • Or the government would have redistributed the ants “wealth” to the grasshopper lol

I’m a prepper and have been pretty much my whole life (before I knew there was a name for it!) I grew up out in the sticks and it was a far enough drive into town that we always had a stocked pantry. We also had emergency supplies for when the power went out because we were LAST priority for the power company. We would go days without power during really bad winters. Those practices just carried over into my adult life, even though my circumstances have changed. It’s a good way of life, economic collapse or not. If things go bad, we’ll be prepared. If they don’t go bad, we’ll save a whole lot of money by being ahead of the game. Either way, we’re in a better spot than living moment-to-moment. Hurricane Katrina was a good confirmation for me to keep on the path of preparedness. At no time in my life do I want to end up in the proverbial SuperDome.

  • mike

great article…I worry a lot about the master plan of this country. It seems there are very important things going on daily that mainstream media keeps from us on purpose. I think the economy is in dire trouble. A monetary crash is what worries me most along with some type of government take over. With all the bills/laws that have been written in just the last 4-5 months it is clear to me that our leaders no longer have any respect for our Constitution or their oaths. I worry that my son wont grow up in a safe, free America and have decided to Join this preppers movement. I figure I can spend a couple hundred buck and at least have the mental security of knowing we’ll have supplies for 60-90 days in the case of a large emergency. I was a Boy Scout and am now Prior Service Military so I understand the benefits of being prepared for the worst. I like to use the saying 3 is 2, 2 is 1, and 1 is none! Thanks again, great article.

  • CAngel

Another great article Michael, thanks. I too am preparing for disaster and have accomplished all except for self defense. I am having a hard time with this one. I’ve never owned a gun and have only fired one, one time and that was back in the seventies. Any sugestions on alternatives or a caliber of gun I might be able to handle, thanks.

    • Greg

Find a local firing range and sign up for one of their intro courses. They will help you get familiar. 🙂

      • Tim

Exactly -just signed up the girlfriend in the the NRA womens tutorial.- Women on Target. For $50 she is doing a one day class on all types of firearms with women so she is not intemediated by myself or my buddies. When she is done I will get her the gun she prefers. -some women gravitate towards the shotgun or rifle believe it or not. Here is there sight (below), in Central Illinois they had to open another 2 classes because the others were booked. Good sign to see women getting prepped minded too, some are even more so than their husbands.

Come clean Michael.I know Glenn Beck reads this site. You know what blogger he is….

Wait dont tell me…let me guess??????? !!!

Keep the laughs coming Mr Beck,we SURE need them !

lol. Glenn’s going all Ben Franklin. Glenn quotes Ben Franklin about not wanting to talk to people about such trifles when times are this serious. So I dont Glenn would have the patience to pose like a moron.

    • Michael

Thank you for those kind words. I am getting a really good response to this particular article.

  • Horhey

Nice…..3 million out of 300 million. What’s wrong with this picture? Oh yeah, it’s called mainstream media, or should be called elevator media, to put you to sleeeep. Zzzz zzzz zzzz. This won’t go well when it hits.1 percent of the population has food. This is not inspiring confidence in my food supply, I will need a ICBM silo to hide. Lol

    • mondobeyondo

Only 297 million people to go.

Some of them will wake up when they smell the coffee. Others, when they smell the ammonia. The rest – well, another “terrorist” attack should do the job.

  • dmitry

    Dear Michael,

    thanks for the heads up.

  • whteshark

I thought preppers were the tin foil hat types waiting for the mother ship while I was growing up.

Damn, if I wasn’t blind and stupid.

I joined their ranks last year and many of those around me think I wear a tin foil hat now.

The only regret I have is I didn’t put it on sooner and I am so late to the game. 🙁

    • DownWithLibs

Keep moving and stay confidant. You’ll be fine. Waking up is 90% of the battle!!!

  • Terry

I call them preppies because you have to have money, land, space to prepare.

    • Highspeedloafer

Terry, That sounds like an excuse to me. I know many preppers, even in apartments. I know people on very limited income who are preppers and believe me they aren’t Preppies.

  • tappedops

All fear-mongering… just because the gov’s got the air, food and water jacked… and want to tax you on what you ex-hale doesnt mean there out to get you… its mother earth were trying to save here…80 plus % of us need to die to reach our goal…

    • Highspeedloafer

      You First!

  • bob-bob-bob

The only fly in the ointment is IF Marital law is declared by the president, with a stroke of the pen he can make a law that says “NO HOARDING”. Well bob no one knows I got it you say, think again my friends , did you make your purchases with a credit card ? Did you buy your food from one of the big suppliers like E foods direct or the ready store ? guess what ? its on record! And don’t think for a second that someone won’t get those records an come knocking on your door. So your are going to hide it huh? And tell them you aint got it .Then you get to go to Camp FEMA an enjoy all the wonderfull activitys behind the barbed wire !! The feds are not going to mess around along with any records they will lay their grubby hands on they will have snitches and spys everywhere so watch your back .Prepping isn’t as easy as it sounds is it ?

    • Paranoid

The stroke of a pen won’t get much from millions of people who don’t feel like giving it up. I can just see the FEMA people trying to get it. “Clowns to the left of me, Jokers to the right”

    • M. Hapney

      Bobx3 –

At least some effort is made. That is a lot better than the alternative which is to be a non-thinking drone like 98% of Americans with three cans of tuna fish in the cupboard.

It would take weeks before any sort of government confiscation of ‘hoarded’ food. By then, a majority of the population would already be starved out/dead/rioting like crazy. They will have their hands full.

So, which is better? Prep or just say what the hell, they may take anything I have, so why bother?

Any person of intelligence would say prep.

      • bob-bob-bob

I did forget to mention that one way to prep without records is to make your purchases localy and use CASH ! sorry for the slip up in answer to you M. Hapney I agree, any prepping is better than none and we will have to take our chances on the feds getting their hands on it .

    • Someone may show up, but neither I nor my food storage will be here. I will be joining it at my secluded retreat community. My off-grid retreat has no address or even a driveway for that matter.

If I prepare and someone steals it then shame on them, but if I do not then shame on me.

      • Highspeedloafer

        Prepared Pastor,
I have seen you brag about your place so many times, I feel like I should warn you. It wouldn’t be that hard to find your IP address, track you and take your stuff. Loose lips sink ships. Me, I’ve already eaten all of my stores and given away my guns. Nothing to see here folks.

  • Pat

I noticed you did not mention the financial preparedness 🙂

Just take a look at what happened to Zimbabwe when their economy collapsed here:

  • Paul

Really? Only preppers are using alternative energy sources?

This is not a doomsday scenario. People who save resources to increase profits are not so new.

And in times of more traffic jams and uncertain supply chains it is only natural to increase storage capacity to remain productive.

Please see my book “Storage”, which explains in detail the importance of capacitors, reservoirs, dams, glaciers, warehouses, food pantries, snow-capped mountains, humous, savings accounts.

If you reduce storage you increase speed and throughput. But this is applies to everything. Everything good and bad will hit you immediately with full force. While water is good, flooding isn’t.

A traffic jam will halt production, a fire in a factory will disrupt the whole supply chain with dire consequences for all affected.

And with more speed, the hits will come ever faster and people and nature will not be able to cope.

No snow – no glaciers. No glaciers – no rivers. People will depend on rainfall alone, and for rainfall you not only need humid air, but also cold air to condense the humidity into drops.

So, when you think it through, better be prepared for what is to come. And with more storage you are better covered against volatility in food prices.

The past has shown that storage peoples from colder climates progress faster than Hand-to-Mouth Peoples from warmer climates.

Because there are about 300 Million Americans NOT preparing and about 200 Million Americans who really do think that the Government is going to take care of them?

Nice list of sites — Thank you for sharing.

We have a big ranch to get to if it comes down to it. Will need more trustworthy people to help protect it and contribute. Escape routes off of the main roads already planned. One buddy has plenty of gold and silver who is in the tech business… another buddy has lots of guns and ammo. Obviously… I have the land to live off of which is well over a 1,000 acres with cattle, deer, Wild Turkey and Fish. Shelter provided with a house and well for water. Plus I’m in the Medical field. When our great jobs collapse… we are all heading out there to ride out the chaos.

17 Miles to the nearest stop light… A lot of land to protect from the Gary’s of the Nation but I think we have enough bullets and know how to take care of them.

Fricken A… Just got back from the Grocery Store and spent over $50 for nothing. Might as well just get out there now and start living off of the land. It’s costing more to live in the “civilized” world then what I make…

Need to recruit an Engineer into the circle.. Trying to think of what else we need to help out when the SHTF.. A good mechanic would probably be nice. Possibly a sniper?

Anybody have any suggestions… much appreciated.

    • Key people in no particular order: Doctor, Engineer, Mechanic, Gardener, Self defense/Security, Logistics, Cook – When you are assembled make sure that you teach and learn from each other – you do not want one person getting ill and nobody knowing how to fix something when it has gone wrong, make sure each person gains the knowledge of at least two others in the group.

Also for longer term you might want to think about bee keeping as well – your plants NEED pollination + extra bonus of honey

You’ll need someone who can grow food. Hunting is the quick and easy way to get food and everyone will be doing it in the event of a disaster of that proportion. I live in an area where game has been plentiful but as of late, several people have lost their jobs and are relying on the game to feed their families. Ducks, turkey, hogs, and deer populations are decreasing.

  • ken Nohe

A simple reason for all the worries is that for the first time in history we understand the risks better but as a society do almost nothing to prepare for it.

We should not be paranoid, but the risk of quakes on the West coast is real. Hurricanes, twisters and droughts are more predictable but still painful for those affected. And that is just for nature.

Even if you do not believe in peak oil, oil is definitively becoming a more expensive commodity and we have done absolutely nothing over the last 30 years to find replacement.

Although they may be right in the long term, what the preppers do not understand is that a society does not crumble in a matter of months. Our children will be poorer than we are: It is already the case now! And our grand-children poorer again and on so that in 100 years the average living standard may be less than half what it is now or even below.

This to my opinion is more sinister than Armageddon because we will have time to adapt to it. And if we cannot reverse the process then yes indeed it will be the end… and we won’t even be able to witness it. Just a broken elevator here, a tag there, old vintage car. New York will fell like Havana long before it looks Babylon!

You know the prepper slogan is in Shawshank redemtion- “Get busy living or get busy dying”.

  • pete

I take offense at the word “prepper”. It implies you’re preparing for something which may (or may not) occur.

17 years ago I was “prepping”. Starting in 2000 when the recession began and then turned into a depression, we have been “dealer withers” or deal-with-it-ers or something.

At this point, if you think you are going to “prepare”, you may end up with too little, too late. Better than being a “didn’t deal with it at all ers”.

That fact that ALL of the authorities are saying it’s over and everything is fine and getting better should scare the stuffing out of anyone with a lick of sense.

The huffing and puffing started a long time ago. Most of the stick and mud houses have crumbled…use brick. The wolves are coming.

Agreed. We all spend lots and lots of money in our lifetimes to pay for insurance that we pray we never have to need. Why should food and items essential for everyday life be any different?

  • grandpa

First thought is fear mongering to get people to spend money and suck up $100 bills.Second , theyre still smart enough to know theyre to dumb and lazy to survive on their own. and 3rd. a good percentage of the population is waiting for the word to jump up and slice the throats of the rest and then the invasion begins. Paul revere rode through, and the people went to sleep

  • Kevin2

    1. Bad news is everywhere.

    2. The governments ability (or desire) to care for and protect citizens were shown to be very lacking with the LA Riots and Katrina.

    3. One plus two equals three. Prepare yourself.

  • Anna44

It was our veggie garden that fed us last year. Thank goodness for the stored food I had put away 2 years ago, because we ate through it. It didn’t take a disaster to validate it, it was unemployment that hit our family. As for Mr. Ralston- get that canned & freeze dried food out of your garage/trailer because the heat is killing the shelf life.

  • Jon

Interesting show on the National Geographic channel on this subject called Doomsday Preppers

  • note from idaho

I would add staying healthy and fit as one of the Prepper basics. What lies ahead will not only be mentally difficult but also a physical challenge.
Prepping makes one more in tune to fiscal matters and lost traits such as frugality and the joys of a simple lifestyle.

For someone new to prepping building a Bug Out Bag can seem like a big task. Everybody you read about has been tweaking theirs for months or even years and has a pile of gear built up. It’s hard to know where to start, but if you cover just all of the basics in a survival situation you will still be much better off that 99% of the people.

We started with one of the kits from and added copies of important papers, extra clothing and an emergency radio too. They have a 2 person backpack kit on sale for $79! It takes only a few minutes to pick out a kit that works for your family and have it shipped to you, instead of driving all over town trying to find all the items you need for a good bug out bag. Then spend a day reviewing the contents and adding your extras. Put it in the hallway closed by the door and it’s ready whenever you need it. Total time spent probably 2 hours = Lifetime of Peace of Mind!

With that task complete start storing a 3 months supply of food and personal hygiene items…. just keep prepping!

  • Syrin

Financial collapse is all but guaranteed. Look at where Chris Martenson lives. Michael Burris. Financial experts are prepping for the end of times. Research the Denver airport. Research FEMA camps. I heard a FEMA commercial the other morning that said essentially, “Prepare for a disaster”. Our military is being trained to handle domestic “unrest”. (for the GARYS of the world). I have military intelligence people and CIA agents as patients, and they have told me to prepare. The gov’t things something big is coming be it an EMP like event secondary to a solar flare (this is supposed to be one of the worst years ever for solar activity), or be it global financial collapse. The latter is unavoidable at this point. It’s just a matter of severity and timing.

  • Barn Cat

Only about 3 million people are prepping and America is a country of 300 million. The vast majority of people are unprepared. I think that a third of preppers are seriously underprepared in at least one area: they aren’t sufficiently armed or they don’t have enough water or they don’t have a way to heat their homes for at least a year. I’m sorry but having to walk a mile to a water source is not prepared. It’s not going to be safe to go outside for any reason for months after the collapse.

    OCTOBER 13, 1973

“My dear daughter, listen well to what I have to say to you. You will inform your superior.”

After a short silence: “As I told you, if men do not repent and better themselves, the Father will inflict a terrible punishment on all humanity. It will be a punishment greater than the deluge, such as one will never seen before. Fire will fall from the sky and will wipe out a great part of humanity, the good as well as the bad, sparing neither priests nor faithful. The survivors will find themselves so desolate that they will envy the dead. The only arms which will remain for you will be the Rosary and the Sign left by My Son. Each day recite the prayers of the Rosary. With the Rosary, pray for the Pope, the bishops and priests.”

“The work of the devil will infiltrate even into the Church in such a way that one will see cardinals opposing cardinals, bishops against bishops. The priests who venerate me will be scorned and opposed by their confreres… churches and altars sacked; the Church will be full of those who accept compromises and the demon will press many priests and consecrated souls to leave the service of the Lord.”

“The demon will be especially implacable against souls consecrated to God. The thought of the loss of so many souls is the cause of my sadness. If sins increase in number and gravity, there will be no longer pardon for them.”

    • Barn Cat

You need to stop posting laws taught by demons.

  • Lisa

Great article. I’ve been doing this for about a year and a half. My family and friends think I’m just paranoid and worry way too much, but guess who’s door they will be knocking on when the SHTF. I live in Florida and have seen how quickly the shelves are emptied during hurricanes. I will never put myself in that situation again. It’s only a matter of time before the next false flag event, natural disaster, or economic implosion. Pray to God and repent of your sins people. There are some really nasty things on the horizon…

  • McKinley Morganfield

    Amen Michael.

  • Ozmo

The only thing I can say, even with the sites listed, is no one can tell you how to prep. This is something you know about you. Use these sites as a guide, but its not the end all.

No one can advise where to live and what to stock up on inorder for you family to be ready if something where to happen.

    Just my 2 cents

  • Rancher

Decent article but I feel you are acting a bit naive on some of this subject///

First up Doomsday preppers is a joke of a show and basically demonstrates on what not to do rather than what to do. Try smearing your face, location pictures, stores and supplies all over the freaking TV screen? Doomed is a good word for those on the show….

Next they are portrayed as prepping for one major type event. Good preppers plan for every event possible to survive. True preppers realize they can not survive everything which could happen and we all do die at some point. But we tried. Good preppers are not perfect but… realistic.

Next you left off your list of sites probably the best place to meets others with prepper concerns in your area which has 7,000 MEMBERS.

    Shame on you…

Last you are 150% wrong as per prepping does not need to be expensive. It actually is very expensive if you intend on living to see the end of the tunnel someday after a true extended grid down crisis event. Denial of the FACT is another indicator on one not being aware of or willing to admit such a truth.

Truth is this: A good well balanced prepper has created and entirely alternate lifestyle which is turn key, ready to go, always maintained and operational to function well with a no grid situation. This also includes for the entire span of said crisis event which could last months and easily into years…no running water, no sewer, no drains and no toilets, no natural or propane gas, no man made fuel source of any kind available, no communications at all, no heat, no cooling, no fire protection as neighborhoods are overwhelmed by fires, filthy air, no dial tone to use to call 911 or anyone, no take out food and no home delivered pizza ;-( …. No safety outside, people you thought were good neighbors now willing to kill you to feed their children. In other words your location…sucks.

Therefore a good well balanced prepper has an alternate much less traveled location ready to go. That Sir costs big time coin. Not chump change. So yes it is expensive. Period.

Good preppers also have gathered with other good preppers to be able watch the perimiter 360/24/7 and have enough people left over to prep food, cook, clean and be able to sleep well and so much more. They have provided for everything missing above when the power drops off line….

By the way veggie gardens and fruit trees are nice but a real prepper never ever counts anything which could be a food source as a food source until it is harvested and stored away. Gardens fail, fruit trees fail and both attract two legged zombie types bent on eating your veggies, your fruit, the fruits of your labor, having their way with your wife and children and leaving you all for dead.

Now folks that is a bit of what realistic preppers realize and try to prepare for. Not some silly storm for a week or two.

Welcome to the real world of prepping….

    • Highspeedloafer

I agree with much of what you said, I just didn’t care for how you said it. Most folks don’t have the kind of money you’re talking about so it doesn’t apply to them. Yet, many of them will survive with much less than you have.

  • John Thompson

My wife and I moved to an entirely different state as well. We have located near a small town and in the last 3 years we have met around 30 people that have move to the area for the same reason. I will say this. Prepping can be costly in time and money

  • Steve

Katrina disaster in New Orleans is a “perfect” example of how your Government will respond in a national disaster. Imagine a economic collapse where the whole country is like New Orleans. It would not take much to collapse America. Power grid shutdown. How about $20 a gallon gasoline, with 50% unemployment. A nuke hitting a city and the country in panic where there is a mass exodus from the cities. How long will “preppers” hold out before being looted. Think of many years before any civilized recovery and then under a military police state dictatorship.

  • Kathy Smith

People better become “preppers” in the days ahead not years ahead. We probably won’t have years to prep. Sooner is better than later. God help us all.

  • Rancher

By the way Michael…welcome to Idaho land of many preppers…. and even some good ones.

    • Michael

Thank you – it is definitely beautiful up here.

      • Rodster

Why don’t you post your address, Michael? I’m sure Gary2 and his OWS loser buddies would love to know where you keep your food when SHTF. 😆

  • planetdestroyer

you prepare for disaters BUT you will not survive. to understand you NEED to understand what IS happing and what WILL happen or what IS coming. sorry folks but what is happing around the world is it is preparing for the anti-christ. you heard that name when you were young and you also heard about 666. well guess what? its here. the world is about to be plunged into total chaos. it will last for seven years. so if your a prepper you better stock up on food for seven years and IF you think you will live through these seven years i urge you to read the book of revelation starting with the four horses. and it only gets wrose. you wanted a world without God your about to get one and guess who its ruler will be? you guessed it satan himself. there are those who prep for survial but at the end of the seven year tribulation you will not survive. then there are those who prep for total saftey through a person they trust and believe in. who told them this was coming. NO ONE ON PLANET EARTH can stop what is about to happen, again i say NO ONE! time isnt running out, it has stopped. its like wacthing a fuse burn its way towards the firecracker and the fuse HAS burned its journey now all we wait for is the big bang. if you ‘believe’ NOW you will escape whats coming without a scracth but if you dont want to ‘believe’ then prepare for HELL on planet earth and you will not escape. 2 things are about to happen. (1) is the rapture of the ‘believers’ (2) is PSALMS 83. either one will be the sound of the big bang going off. maranatha and good luck.

    • prepply

      Satan doesn’t exist.

      • mondobeyondo

Yes, Satan DOES exist. I pray you will not realize that when it’s too late, because if you do – there is no turning back. Hell is real, and it is eternal.

Seek Jesus, accept Him into your life, and ask Him to forgive your sins. If you do, you will enter heaven as a child of God.

        • Johnny

If you think a tax paying American is getting into Heaven-good luck, we are the 1 % here in history-our deeds and wars are 10 times worse than the Nazi’s. If you have payed taxes to a government that has manipulated the world their will be no mercy for you, unless you sell your soul to Zeus for $19.99 plus ship & hand.

I got news also- Ben Bernake is obviously the anti christ.

  • Jim

God is preparing his people for what is coming, its as simple as that.

  • xander cross

When Katrina it, the government (under bush) did not allow supplies to go to the people after the hurriance hit. There were many people and compaines that were trying to give supplies to New Orlens, but the government blocked them from doing so. This fact was left out for a reason. The media especially fox news and cnn, sensationlize people being left for dead during the hurricane and yes, fox news loved how black people was struggling to survive during those times. Remember, supplies eventally run out.

    • estamos jodidos

When Katrina hit, the primary responsibility for rendering aid within New Orleans rested with the NO Mayor, Ray Nagin, and secondly with the Governor of the State of Louisiana. The Federal Government is restricted in providing assistance until requested by the governor of that state.

It is easy to blame President Bush, but under the constitution, we are a united federation of sovereign states, and the federal government. respected the sovereignty of the state of Louisiana. You did not mention the city school buses that were left sitting idle that were flooded and could have been used for evacuation, had the Mayor bothered to request their use.

Perhaps we should revamp the constitution to formalize an all powerful Nanny state to take care of every conceivable need, rather than expect people to act responsiblely for themselves.

  • xander cross

Also, for all of you tea party conservatives that won’t help black people and minorities because you think that they are inferior, don’t find yourself ending up relying on others as well. Also, victory gardens needs water, so if you do bulid that keystone pipeline and it messes up the water, what then?

    • Mal R.

I’m sorry, but you are slightly delusional and really uninformed. The Democrat party owns racism in this country and will ALWAYS be the party of slavery. Read your history home slice. Slavery, segregation, racism, the KKK, Jim Crow. ALL OF IT – Democrats.

And I’m sorry you dont get to claim the mantle of purity because you supposedly passed the civil rights act of 64. It was tried TWICE before then and blocked by democrats each time – once by LBJ himself. You racists HELPED pass it ONLY because it became a hot button issue.

      • xander cross

@Mal R. Who said that I was a democrat? I already know about the racism in the democratic party in the 60’s and also, know that they switched to the republican side as well, but I have said is true. I read my history and learned about many black emperors of Rome and how black people built the country of Spain.

    • Yo whatzupwithit brotha Cross? Youze bees da man my brotha! Dem whaite folkz needz a good azz whopping when da SHTF brotha!

    • TX4Life

Four years ago, accusations of racism because of philosophical and political differences really bothered me. I could not understand anyone accusing me of racism when what I believe in (independence) benefits people of all skin tones and backgrounds. After four years of being accused of racism for no valid reason, I must admit I now would be MUCH more reluctant to help anyone of color than I was in the past. If they view me as a hateful racist, I have reason to be wary of them. My political views have absolutely nothing to do with racism or feelings of superiority. Do you ever consider for a second that you could be wrong in accusing people of being racist?

  • Mad Max

Most of us will be caught off guard because we’re too distracted with the ridiculous rat race. Prepping is not going to help much. But if you’re serious about prepping then you better start migrating south to the warming states.

    OsiXs (Revolution 2.0)

    • Highspeedloafer

Max, Didn’t you get the memo. We are full up. We have no room for the Yanks. I suggest they all head for Canada. Take an extra blanket.

  • GoneWithTheWind

I think what we are seeing is largely the result of a growing information age. Where in the past an individual or 100 different individuals in 100 different locations may have been preppers the problem was “who knew”. Today if you are interested in prepping “you know”. You know that 1000’s of others are prepping and they are all eager to tell you why. Some are prepping for TEOTWAWKI and others are prepping for the tribulation. If all you read is what someone in Ohio is doing to prepare to survive doomsday and someone in Idaho is preparing to survive a total collpase of the economy and someone in Montana is preparing for the “great EMP” then you cannot help but wonder if you are the only person who has missed the boat. Each story you read reinforces each story you have already read and pretty soon the echos in your head all remind you to prepare. Will the world end tomorrow and only those who prepared will live??? I don’t know, no one knows. But I do have a garage full of wheat, rice and beans I would like to sell if anyone is interested. Junk silver preferred but will consider Mastercard…

  • Michael;

It seems great minds do think alike. I too have been wondering about all of the prepping of late. I think though that the best prepper is a generalist scrounger, capable of finding sustenance and survival materials where ever. Improvisation and woodcraft can go a long way in a collapse. Also, skills like lock picking and knot tying can be very valuable. Knowledge is what is most important in chaos, understanding how to get things done can be learned with little or no cost, and do not have a shelf life. If I can hunt or fish, or I know how to pick the locks of the freezer behind the grocery store, I can feed my family. CPR and first aid skills are invaluable, especially in families with small children, but in a collapse situation, become almost universally needed. Practical skills, knowledge, and wisdom are very portable. They are also of high value in an age where we have become so dependent on technology.

  • Mustard Seeds

    Great article, Michael.

Too many people view the end of this economy as a “doomsday” and that people who are “prepping” are “doomsayers”. Most people cannot wrap their heads around what the world would be like without the status quo dictating everything to them through the media. What’s fashionable, what’s trendy, what will make them admired by their peers. The media has brainwashed society to love the gods of materialism, elitism, popularism and anything that gives them the appearance of wealth or being elite! I hear people say, “I would rather be dead if the world as we know it is dying.” They cannot conceive that the world might actually be a BETTER PLACE without all of the elitism and corporatism. Some of my own extended family think like this.

    They would rather be dead?

I want to be here. I want to see this false paradigm collapse. I want to be a positive part of rebuilding the world without all of the corporate control, without all of the media brainwashing, without the “elite” mentality.

Wake up people! Prepping isn’t about fearing the end of the terrible elite driven world we live in now. It is about preparing to be a part of the better world that we will build when all of this control system has finally collapsed.

We don’t have to fear life without corporate/government control.

    Just prepare.

    • Michael

      Very good points.

    • CatNap

      @ Mustard Seeds:

Your comments are a breath of fresh air. Fatalistic pessimism contributes to destruction.

  • MarkieMark

In my opinion, 99% of Preppers are neglecting the most important survival basic—

One family alone will not withstand an assault if desperate gangs start roaming the countryside. All these Preppers think heading out to the country will keep them well away from danger. But when the food and fuel run out in the cities and the word gets around that stores of food and ammo can be had out in the country that is where they will head. And it won’t be onesies-twosies, it will be large well-armed mobs that will probe and attack from all sides 24/7. One family will not be able to hold off an extended seige without sleep and extra manpower.

What Preppers need to do is be prepared to organize local militias of family, friends and neighbors. A militia can draw on the resources and talents of the group. Patrols can be organized to detect threats and repel them before they reach vital resources.

Isolated humans have never thrived as well as those who have organized into tribes, clans, towns, ect..

  • comnenus

Preparation is useless. An organized armed band can destroy all the preparation within minutes.

It takes years to raise a person, and it takes a second or less to kill that one. Destruction has been much less expensive than creation.

It is much easier to take someone else’s preparation and claim it as one’s own, like Mongols for more than 5,000 years had learned it.

  • Not much mention of peak oil. Why is that?

For those who need a real reason to prepare, do yourself a favor and google the Hirsch Report. Read the executive summary. This is the Dept. of Energy’s report on peak oil. You may want to also check out the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers report, the Bundeswehr report, and the U.S. Army’s report.

Another great site is Energy Bulletin. Go to their primer page.

  • Paranoid

Move along, move along; no preppers here. As a matter of fact: “Buddy can you spare a silver dime?” Me? well I’m down to my last can of canned Okra dog food. Happy to share a spoon full. How many of us are there; who knows?

  • prepply

    Hey Michael,

I have been greatly enjoying your blog for over a month now. I wonder if you have or if you will address the Cascadia Subduction Zone (basically a magnitude 9 waiting to happen). Discover magazine had a great piece on it just recently:

    • Michael

I saw that article the other day.

And I do believe that someday there will be massive earthquakes on the west coast.

A significant volcanic eruption is also something to watch for.

  • Funny how many christian friends actually know what is coming and yet they don´t even prepare with a single flask of water. “We have faith in God, to store food in unbelief in God” they say. Ha!, they have the funny Harry Potter view of God, “GOD SERVE US FAT FLESH!, God will NOT serve you a steak because you are ordering him to do so! Prepare or not, ignorance will not make God serve you food on a silver platter!

    • Have they not read the Bible?
      Go to the ant, you sluggard;
consider its ways and be wise!
      It has no commander,
      no overseer or ruler,
yet it stores its provisions in summer
and gathers its food at harvest.
      – Proverbs 6:6-8

A prudent man sees danger and takes refuge, but the simple keep going and suffer for it.
      – Proverbs 22:3

      • Sunday

Hey, the government is prepping too. Its called The National Defense Resources Preparedness.

    • jackrorabbit

While it is prudent for Christians to be prepared for the unforeseen, there are many examples where God stepped in. Elijah and the ravens, Elijah and the widow/son with their “final” cakes that never ended, and the largest of course, the Exodus and the 40 YEARS of manna and quail, despite the grumbling of the children of Israel.

      Luke 12
27“Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; but I tell you, not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. 28“But if God so clothes the grass in the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, how much more will He clothe you? You men of little faith! 29“And do not seek what you will eat and what you will drink, and do not keep worrying. 30“For all these things the nations of the world eagerly seek; but your Father knows that you need these things. 31“But seek His kingdom, and these things will be added to you. 32“Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has chosen gladly to give you the kingdom.

33“Sell your possessions and give to charity; make yourselves money belts which do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near nor moth destroys. 34“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

      • callmecordelia1

Jackorabbit, I have pondered the same scriptures. The section that you quoted in Luke is one of my all-time favorites, and brings me great comfort. If you’ve never heard the Mormon Tabernacle Choir sing Consider the Lilies, I recommend it. It’s my go-to soul-soothing song. But I am also a prepper. I have decided that if I’m going to count on God to pick up the slack, then I have to do everything in my power to do my part as well. If we do all that we can do, then he will fill in the holes. But I don’t believe we can watch the trainwreck coming and do nothing just because He will take care of us. It’s a balance of having faith and doing our part.

        • paul

Very well put, I also a Christian and that balance seems to be right in our daily lives.
          Thank you

  • Gabrial Singh

Ha Ha Ha you get more extremist and rick santorum like by the day. You mean WHITE people are scared. Non-whites have lived near catastrophe for thousands of years already…you right wing looney bins oughta take a cue from Major Doe…depart this planet, in the spaceship in the tail of Haley’s Comet! and sooner, better than later!

    • what you say is wrong friend iam from Scotland and not rick santorum, if I had to say what you said about whites I would be jailed. it gona happen wither you like it or not. the whole world is going in to melt down. so go away in your rocket.

    • Leslie

Gabrial – That is one of the most racist comments I have read in a long time. How can you generalize a statement like, “You mean WHITE people are scared. Non-whites have lived near catastrophe for thousands of years already.” If you are inferring that black people are not frightened by catastrophes, perhaps you should watch the video on this website. The faces of the Katrina victims are full of fear… and sorrow.

But I’m wondering… since you made that comment about white people. It sounds like you’re inferring white people have not suffered in catastrophes. Do you not recall or even know about the Holocaust? I don’t recall seeing any black people among the 11,000,000 people put to death by the Nazis. And what about the Inquisitions when millions of people were put to death for refusing to convert to Roman Catholicism. I could go on. 9-11. WWI and WWII. I would suggest you open a history book and do some studying before you open your mouth and make such a ridiculous, bigoted statement.

The truth is – we are all created equal. It’s only sinful mankind that distinguishes human beings by the color of their skin or heritage. In God’s eyes, we are all created in His image. The only distinction the Bible makes concerning people is not “races” of people, but believers and unbelievers. Those who either accept or reject God’s Son, Jesus.

Listen – we can put food and water aside to prepare for a catastrophe – and I think we should – but most importantly we need to be prepared to leave this world because we are ALL going to die someday. We can’t get around that. And stocked up food and water is not going to help us one bit when we are standing guilty before a holy and righteous God on the Day of Judgment. The only way this can end well for any of us, is by asking Jesus into our hearts to save us from our sinfulness. Only then will we be granted access to heaven.

I hope you will consider these words, Gabrial. We can make a lot of wrong decisions in our lives, but this is the ONE decision that will have lasting, eternal consequences. God bless.

      • Benjik

Amen Leslie, you hit it out of the ballpark! 🙂

      • Illiterate Bum!

I reject the notion that Jesus was anything but a mortal being. He was not the Messiah. There, draw that line.

      • Mike

Ah, but Leslie, you’re assuming (probably in error) that Gabrial actually knows how to read.

    • Paul

Black skin burns the same as white skin buddy. Doesn’t matter how close you think you can sit to the fire, you will still burn once you’re in it. Grow up.

    • jaxon64

Interesting and ignorant statement. When I volunteered to work at a medical services station in Port-Au-Prince after the Haiti earthquake, the death, human misery and injuries were all of people of color. In fact, the only “white” people I saw were those who were giving away their time, monies, supplies, skills and care/compassion to their FELLOW HUMANS.
      Again, I repeat, ignorant statement……

    • mondobeyondo

We’re ALL scared. Whites, blacks, Hispanics, Asians, Indians, Africans, and the penguins in Antartica. The Martians are getting nervous too.

    • Gregory8

Get a clue Gabriel Singh-You’re white with a good tan. Indians are caucasians, not black (negro), or asian (mongoloid): by the way, these are the three (3) primary racial groups that people will find themselves in. There are a lot of poor “white folk” out there too; just look at India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Iran, etc. Yeah, they’re white too but some white-whites would deny this. Oh, and even here in the good old USA, we got “poor white folk” living in Appalachia for over 300 hundred years. So get a clue, get an education, but please pull your racist head out of your ass.

      • jcshalom

?? I know it’s common, but people using colors to describe people has always befuddled me. You classify people from India as “white” when they are “blacker” than many people of African decent, particularly those from Southern India. I would call everyone a shade of black rather than a shade of white since it is said that Adam and Eve were likely of a dark complexion. It goes to show that color designations for people are fairly useless except as a show of ignorance, bigotry, or for the dividing of people for personal gain. I love how one person put it: “the color of man is dust. There is white dust, black dust, red dust, brown dust. Out of the dust we were created and to the dust we all shall go.” It’s ridiculous that it should get as much focus as it does, but alas, I’ve taken my time to throw in my two cents confirming that I’m of the same ignorant sort of dust as everyone else :)!

      • Kightravin

I don’t know what kind of color blindness yall got, but All mostly see is just differant shades of brown. I have seen very few actual black people. and very few actual white people. and I have never seen an asian that was yellow. I have seen many peoples around the world and back agian and the majority is one shade of brown or another.

In tornado prone areas, be sure you have storage facilities that are not suseptible to the ravages of the storm. In house items disappear in seconds. So take precautions. Been there done that….

  • sharonsj

I already live in a rural area where you have to be prepared. And I’ve been stocking up as best I can.

But I can see from the times I’ve lost electricity that a wide-spread disaster is something most people cannot cope with. Nothing works, food in the fridge and freezer goes bad, and without batteries or propane cannisters, you are screwed. Most people are completely unprepared and that’s what the rest of us have to worry about.

    • Highspeedloafer

Sharon, check out this cook stove. I bought one and I love it.

      • uncurable wound

Nice stove, but how well does it cook beans?

  • I’m too poor to prepare, but I do think it’s a good idea if you have some extra money.

    • DownWithLibs

Like Michael said, start small and just keep going as best you can. A few extra cans of soup, bottles of water, even a can or two of Sterno…it will add up faster than you think. At least give it a try!!!

    • Paranoid

Not true. A Billion people live on $2 a day or less. For 90 days write down every penny you spend. At the end of the 90 days look over your list; how much stuff did you buy that did you no value. You will find out during the 90 days you cut down spending just because you didn’t want to write it down. You will also find 10-20%of your “misc expenses” were not necessary. Buy a 500 ct bottle of vitamins and min. Cost about $12. Go to your local pizza shop get 6, 5 Gal food buckets (50C ea) Go buy 20# sugar ($10) and 50# rice ($20) and a large can of chicken Bouillon($5). You will have spent less than $50. you can survive over a month. It’s will that counts, not money.

      • Rancher

A couple tubs of rice/beans/bullion and vitamins might sound like a plan… but what are you planning for anyway? With that in your corner you are planning for a short term food shortage. Period.

With great hope it is not happening in winter and you have to stay warm or die.

In hopes no one attacks you cause you can not afford to defend yourself with weapons od similar means. Never bring a knife to a gun fight….

In hopes the grid stays up…

In hopes the water keeps running from your tap…

These are just a few things one will be facing which a couple buckets of food basics will not help with. One more thing… the billions on 2 bucks a day are in countries with warm climates year round, their economy revolves around 2 bucks a day… not like here. Apples to apples and oranges to oranges when you try to justify o very weak comparison. 2 bucks a day will not pay the power bill and utilities let alone much else so prepping for the 2 buck chuck guy is a dream….

      • jackrorabbit

Excellent batch of suggestions. The best part of this is rice(if stored in a cool/dry place-average house temp out of the sun) will last a long time. It might not taste the greatest, but it is still edible. Honey never goes bad. Don’t forget that you will need to have an oil of some kind to cook in/with, unless you want soup all the time.

    • Kightravin

I am too pour to prepare also but i do it any way. Its learning the skills that is the most important. Start with learning bushcraft.

  • Imaplaneiac

The Discovery Channel is now airing regular, hour-long, shows on TV about preppers. A few nights ago, there was a report about a guy who spent $450,000 to have an underground bunker built; equipped with all the usual ” creature comforts ” – including TV! He has stockpiled food, water & supplies, for a few years. He’s well stocked with weapons and ” ammo “, as well.

    • Yes, I’m really liking that show, most have really good ideas and plans, some are just over the top! something that really strikes me though is that so much of this prepping is spent ensuring that–in the event of a catastrophic event–these folks will pretty much live their lives with most of the creature comforts that now exist. I truly believe that the best prepping starts in your head and having the ability to be flexible and doing things differently. What did the pioneers use for toilet paper? What root, what bark helped with a headache? What spring green gave the best tonic and nourishment? Knowledge is empowerment!

  • William

While broad “generalities” are suspect, I do believe that if the possession of “something” means that YOU, and not others in America, will survive an economic collapse, you had better believe that the federal “gubmint” will make your survival goods ILLEGAL, from firearms and ammunition to precious metals to food and medicine. The mere mindset of TSA should have convinced you by now. There is only one real question I have, as a military retiree……and that is will the US military partake of martial law and make war on American citizens. Even 20 years ago, I would have said “no”. Today, I am not sure. After all, no one responsible for the false flag attacks of 911 has been punished.

    • Tim

There is a logically reason why this won’t happen-the rural areas will still be the bread basket and plenty of those “country folks can survive”. For the feds to knock out the rural areas would be unprecendent in history- you don’t bite the hands that feed you. Most people in the rural area have a sense of prepardness anyway. They have always prepped in case of long electric outages and so forth. As a matter of opinion or maybe fact- the government would be a high prioty on rural security in favor of the farmers, not the other way around. And don’t think monsanto can run the fields without rural labor help- no way in hell. Can you imagine the bloody massacre of going house to house against every Bubba and his guns and cousins, dogs, traps, explosives, voltav cocktails and long rifles out the you know what. Some innovative IED’s will be processed to say the least. Two towns down and eveyone would open fire as the word spread, the army would desert and disband quickly. We are not talking about some al-qaeda poverty fighter here. We are talking about engineers working with chemist to make some serious weapons here. They will not rollover. Just try a little expirment and go up to a rural farm house at midnight and knock on the door for directions- 9 times out of 10 you will get to see Farmer Dan’s Shotgun.

      • Celestina

AMEN…a country boy or girl will survive!

  • One thing I don’t see in any prepper guide is building up one’s own lean mass.

Extra muscle tissue doesn’t just give you strength that will be vital in a survival situation. It also gives your body a store of complete nutrition on which it can rely for weeks at a time in the absence of proper meals. It will also make you a much less attractive target to bipedal predators.

Hit the barbells, sledgehammers, and kettlebells now, people. Strong people are harder to kill and more useful in general.

    • Highspeedloafer

I agree Tim, I am walking 5 miles per day now. I fell better than I did 10 years ago.

      • Highspeedloafer

        Sorry, “feel”.

    • TX4Life

Very good point. It is incredibly difficult to go from an 8 hour desk job to 6-8 hours a day of physical labor. It takes time to build up your stamina for physical labor after years of a sedentary job. For a prepper who currently works a desk job, best stock up on Aleve and muscle rub in addition to building up your lean mass. May want to have some aspirin stocked also to help avoid a heart attack.

    • jackrorabbit

A smart person will beat the “bulky” person every time. Knowledge is far better than just weight lifting. I am currently learning medical treatments, how to grow food, and how to forage for food. No matter how strong you are, if you get sick and don’t know what it is or how to cure it, your dead. If you are strong, but don’t know how to grow food, unless you become a thief and murderer, then you will eventually die. If you are strong, but don’t know the difference in herbs and poison weeds, your dead.

I don’t have anything against someone gaining strength(it will be needed for doing all of the above that I am studying), but find the time to LEARN. Never stop learning. Store books on how to…, so you don’t have to try and find someone to tell you how, or show you how, or treat you.

    • Ozmo

One of the things I read all the time is about getting in shape and losing weight to be in better health. All of those things you have talked about.

      Just my 2 cents

  • brian dunn

Not to mention the coming WRATH of God the coming 7 year wrath of God. 21 judgements in the book of rev coming to earth soon. people put your trust in God John 3:16 we believers God’s kids will be going home soon 1 thess 4-13-18, for WE are not apointed to wrath 1 thess 5-9, rev 3:10. Just incase we are here for a little while longer,I Have plenty of food water ammo guns, etc come get it. Good luck with that.

    • Paranoid

I’m to old to worry about survival, But heaven or hell, I have no intention of going anywhere by any will but mine. Homeland Security, TSA, I’m to old to be pushed, and I don’t care who goes with me. I have lived free under the Constitution and by the power of Sam Colt I’ll die the same way

      • Richard

I hope you are right about choosing your own destiny, but if you are wrong. Sam Colt will not help you on judgement day my friend

    • jackrorabbit

I have the same point of view, but what if we are misinterpreting it? And we aren’t taken until the midpoint, as the mass of people that are killed in the tribulation. Would it not be prudent to prepare as though we will have to survive through it, and be wrong, than assume that we will not have to survive it and be wrong? Either way you will end up in Heaven, but the path their may be miserable or enjoyable. We are told to keep our lanterns full in case the bridegroom should tarry(lesson of the 5 wise/5 foolish virgins), note they are all virgins waiting for the bridegroom=all saved. The foolish are told to go to town and BUY the oil(you cannot buy the Holy Spirit, so it isn’t about Him) for their lamps.

Prepare as though you will have to survive it and pray as though you will not. At the very worst, you have put up a storehouse of food, that God knows about, and can lead a new Christian(that becomes one during the tribulation) to, and will allow for them to eat when they cannot trade for food or anything else, unless they take the “mark of the beast”.

      • jaxon64

Agreed jackrabbit. I’ve also added some literature and explanations to those who may find my stores when I’m gone. Things that will explain the true battle that is being fought and open the eyes of someone who will be affected by the great delusion after the removal of the Holy Spirit (2 Thes 2:7)
However if I have misinterpreted and am here until mid-trib, well then those stores and defences will be mighty useful….

PS: my wife and I are both highly trained, licensed medical professionals. If civilized society takes a hiatus, our skills and knowledge alone in the healing professions may be enough to earn us the meals we need….

        • shan

jaxon – I’d suggest using your medical training in conjunction with herbal healing methods. A lot of what you guys are trained with (power, medications) won’t be available in such a situation, but the plants will probably still be growing. If you can use your knowledge of anatomy & physiology along with a knowledge of which plants have which effects, you’ll be far better off. I think of a mechanic with no tools when I think of the current medical establishment in a crisis situation. You guys will need something to work with.

The Elite had to eventually confront the prepper growth around the world. Shows like “Doomsday Prepper” were created, exaggerated, and fluffed to make the preppers look like psychotic maniacs, not cautious and realistic. Propaganda at its finest, the kill-switch variable to be exact.

    • McKinley Morganfield

      I agree 100%.

Im blocking the roads when all you city dwellers come for our livestock!! You better hope the collapse happens in a summer month because you will freeze to death before you get to us!!!

  • Arwen

I seen the show and wonder why these people would show their face on tv. However, the fact that this show is on the air shows people are starting to think preparing is not a joke. I talked to some friends of mine about the economy. One friend said we live in a rural area if things got real bad we have the means and land to survive and the farmers will go back to the old ways. My stepfather is the only one I know seems to think it is a joke. However he seems to think the top people want people to be this way so they will not demand a comfortable life. He said the top people sees those preppers as people they can manipulate. I think it is wise to store food, water, prepare, willingness to learn new skills, build muscles, learn to defend yourself and shoot with both guns and bow and arrows, and work with like minded people. I will also try to live my life too though. I for example do not have credit card debt and do not plan to. I can try to prepare but I will not live in fear either. I will pray and hold faith in God too. Prepare, but if the Bible is true according to Revelation God will punish the world. The lucky people according to Revelation will work all day long like a dog just to be able to have money enough to survive Revelation 6:5-6

Brian, I once heard a great metaphor : A man far to sea in a sinking boat, his prayer, GOD please don’t let me drowned out hear. Gods answer; you will not downed, but by all that is holy don’t stop the bailing. this applies here, he has given us a minds able to put together the facts which are very evident. from these facts we can infer with great certitude that the current system is being systematicly overextended. Medicade. S.S. disability. and a host of other (entitlements) are on a parabolic rise in costs. the tax revenues are down yr over yr. We, our whole country is living on fake barrowed $$. It is an economic fact, it’s coming down. our only hope is to band together with like minded people. a community can servive. single preppers are doomed if they do not also have a support community. By all means buy your preps, but make sure to share them with good solid people. a man being fed by you will have great loyalty and will help you when you need it most. God helps those who help themselves, so that they may help others

We have been grinding our own wheat into flour for over 25 years. We stocked up our first ton of wheat over 25 years ago. I would not have called myself a prepper back then. It is just the way we live. We have grown gardens for over 25 years and my folks always grew one. We have always caned what we liked. Over 10 years ago we bought a 260 acre ranch with lots of water on the property. We raise cows and I guess we should raise chickens, but unless we grow our own feed it is cheaper to go to Costco and buy the chicken. We have gravity fed spring water so we are good with out power. I even put in a bidet so that if you can’t get toilet paper life is good without using leaves. We heat the house and our hot water with hardwood off the property in the winter and have solar for the summer months. We have put over 300 tons of manure on the fields over the years and the pastures are thick like your lawns in the suburbs. Our grass is green 9 plus months of the year if we don’t water the fields. Our ground doesn’t freeze during the winter months like my daughters place in Idaho. We don’t need to shovel the small amount of snow as it only lasts a few days at a time. Southwest Oregon is a great place. It is a shame that the libs run the state but no place is perfect. At least we don’t have sales tax. We live 12 miles out of a small town and we could put in a small hydro power system that would produce power about 7 months of the year. We have neighbors that would band together if things get that bad as they all know that we would be happy to feed them for a few years if need be. If things got real bad and the government failed we are surrounded by timber company and BLM ground for miles around with large trees that we could even build a small town with. I guess a volcano could pop it’s top, but the nearest is 50 or 60 miles away and the wind would blow east. If yellowstone ever goes up, the inter mountain west is toast. The fault for an earthquake is out in the ocean a ways and the tidal waves could not reach us. I guess if you need gold our streams have some, but that is hard work with a slow payoff. I do like it here but Idaho is pretty good as a lot of the population is prepared as the LDS Church has a lot of prepared members which is good for the state. The more of your neighbors that are prepared the better. Just make sure that you and your neighbors have to tools to protect your neighborhood.

I live in a city. It wont take long for the thugs to go door to door and take what they will. I have no weapons say a knife for chopping veggies. Many of us who are vulnerable will be the first victims. I pray for safety through Christ Jesus. So many people in this world will become desperate. I hold on to the ONLY one who can save me. Christ Jesus. If I am to become a victim of this evil then at least I know that my next home will be eternal and WONDERFUL! This world is REALLY coming to it’s end. Ya all better just pray and repent. We are living in the END OF DAYS! Prepare to meet your maker. That is the best prep anyone can do. God Bless!

    • Sunday

Oh my Lynndy, that is the best advice ever. Thank you, I really needed to hear that.

      God bless,

    • mt. top guru

We in the U.S. are too American-centered in our thinking. We think the world revolves around us (u.s.). While Christianity is indeed declining here and almost wiped out in Europe, it is thriving and growing in other parts of the world. People are coming to a saving knowledge of Jesus as Lord and Savior, by the tens of thousands, each and every day. So, the “sign of Noah” has not happened in the entire world. We have been in the “final days” for 2000 years. People get judged in the next life. Counties get judged here in this time. America deserves judgment. America has been judged (Rom. 1:24, 26) We have committed two evils. We have forgotten God, the source of living water. We have built cisterns that do not hold water. (Jer 2:13) We have the blood of over 50 million children at our doorstep calling out to God. (Gen 4:10) Counties come and go. There is no prophesy about America in the Bible. Our only hope is for us to humble ourselves, pray, seek His face, repent and turn from our wicked way and . Then He will hear from heaven, and will forgive our sin and will heal our land. (2 Chron 7:14). Otherwise, God has used countries that were even more wicked than Isreal and Judea to show his judgment. See Habakkuk. God is never without a witness and will always have a remnant. I prepare, so that God can use me if it’s His will. Otherwise, I will go home to be with the Lord. Which is better anyway.

      • Amen to Mt. Top Guru!

  • Survivor

It is always wise to prepare for the unforeseen calamity. It is also wise to be self resourceful and independent. Government can never be trusted, most are self serving and only care about your votes and their own hidden agenda.

  • ItsTime

Its a good idea to prepare by storing a supply of food. But I get the feeling that the average prepper believes that they will be left alone all safe and cozy in their ‘little home made bomb shelters’ while the fools who failed to prepare are out in the streets killing each other.

How long do you think it would take for starving people to start roaming neighborhoods looking to pilage anything edible or of value for barter?

Self defense will only go so far, as one or two households will not be able to fend off the masses.

Many people (I don’t speak for all)have no idea what hell on earth would be unleashed if a collapse happened. Nobody has the ability to say with any confidence that storing food and supplies will be their ticket to survival.

Storing some food in the house may get you by for a few days, maybe a week, but there will be no long term refuge in this. Eventually, it will be known that you have resources. This is unavoidable. Those who have remote locations may last a little longer.

If a collapse ever happens, it will be our faith and trust in God that will be our only hope. I am not saying that preparing is useless. It is a good idea to prepare and a very prudent thing to do. I am just bringing to light that the only refuges that will be totally safe for the long term will be the ones that are consecrated to and blessed by God for the ones He chooses.

    Lord have mercy!

  • Richard

in reference to New Orleans. How easy to forget many refused to leave. They were told of what would happen if they stayed behind.
Afterwards, when help was trying to get to them they were threatened with weapons.

And how easy we forget the people on the rest of the Gulf Coast that were hit directly by Katrina.
    Mississippi, Alabama, parts of Florida.

And we picked our selves up, realized what we had to do and did it by helping each other.

We did not blame the government, we realized it was an act of God.

There were areas of Mississippi that had groups of people gathered. No looting and killing went on.

I think before we blame others for the problem we are in we need to look at ourselves and act like human beings not animals.

Being a prepared for the possibility of another Mt. St. Helens, or an earthquake or some other disaster is only prudent. Everyone wants their family to survive these tragedies so to plan ahead for what you may need is being one step ahead.

Went through the 1965 earthquake in Washington state and the 1980 Mt. St. Helen’s eruption. Being retired military, I think anyone who doesn’t prepare for such disasters is just foolish.

We are not against the current government – though they are doing things I wished would not have done like increasing the national debt, etc.

We are not nut cases looking forward to the financial collapse of our economy.

We are just people who want to be prepared for anything that happens so our family will not only survive – but thrive.

  • Thomas James

I think disasters like hurricanes or tornadoes or earthquakes can be overcome and would not be an end of the world scenarios. Something that scares me as more frightening is a solar storm/flare that causes a total collapse of the elctrical grid for months maybe even years. With no electricity at all we’d all be screwed. Everything would stop, food in stores would vanish right away, there may not even be transportation that works. Couldn’t buy things with credit cards, maybe not even cash. The government’s first priority would be it’s own survival. It would be like the 1800’s overnight. Sure there are plenty of people that would be able to adapt, but millions would probably be either killing each other or themselves. Nobody wants to see their children starve. Major food shortages and water supply disruption could take a heavy toll.

  • ScoutMotto

Saw this article on Lew Rockwell as well. Very good.

  • To Whom it may concern,

I have this very cool property that is ideal for preppers and people set to be apart of a survival community….

I have some prospects about to make and offer… but my plan b is the following….

Sell each of the 7 lots for $500K

Each buyer will get to choose his lot of his choice… see plot plan – first come first pick…

Each buyer will then get a approx 700 sf space in the silotube

Approx $140 K from each sale gets put into escrow.

I million gets put into the silotube for prep.. air filtration systems… or whatever is voted that is most important…. They then can build into their space anyway they want….

What you might find interesting is that our complex has more land than any of the other survival shelters in the world.. has the runway expansion in progress eventually allowing small jets to land… we are in the NY’s Adirondack State Park and around the property we have 12 lots sub-divided with underground utilities in place… lots have beautiful 50 mile views plus an extra 125 undivided ac to the west adjoining the property …world class skiing at Whiteface 20 min, great fishing, backpacking and hunting etc…. Olympic Village Lake Placid nearby, Montreal 80 minutes… An international growing airport in Plattsburgh NY 30 minutes away. Year round activities

My situation is outlined below in a letter I just sent out to past inquires…. I built this project back in 1999, but was unable to do anything with it as my partner had a serious family illness that put everything on hold. We owe nothing on the property, but never could afford to buy each other out….. now I have secured an option from my partner and control all the available real estate.

Read the following and attached proposal… Contact me if you have any questions….

    To whom it may concern,

As you have inquired about the Silohome in the past, we have reduced the price to rock bottom with the intent to sell quickly. The price always has been 2.3 Million for the Silohome only, now available at this fantastic price of $750,000.

I have purchased an option from my partner to buy him out and I have lowered the prices to liquidate our partnership. I’m looking to sell or have an investor come in to work with me. Either way we are looking forward to a new direction.

If you are interested – please contact me ASAP. I would act quickly this deal may not last long as we are getting 3 to 5 inquires on the property per week.

In the chart below, you will find the updated pricing for each component of the Adirondack Airpark Estates where the Silohome is located. These prices are only available to the Silohome purchaser.

This is soooo stupid. Please people get a life. Trust God! It is good to have something for an emergency, but you will not survive and may not want to survive some of the things that could occur. I remember 2000 and all the problems that were supposed to occur. Now, 2012? Give me a break. It ain’t happening. Plus, the Christians will be taken out at the last trumpet sound. Read the bible folks. You think you can survive the Great Tribulation? Doubt it!

I liked the Star Trek episode “The Doomsday Machine”. One of my favorites.

  • victor

From a contrarian standpoint, “doomsday prepping” on TV is quite revealing. A few years ago there was a show called Las vegas on network TV which correctly coincided with the peak in the real estate/ hotel building bubble in las vegas, where the subsequent crash was more than 75% in the local housing market. If we follow this line of reasoning we can conclude that the economy is actually set to take off from here to the upside because of the popularity of shows like the ones mentioned here from a mass sentiment standpoint. I predict the economy as measured by the stock indices like the Dow is set to explode to the upside. Dow Jones Industrial index will go to 100K of more.

  • GOD is a very present help in times of trouble….so seek the Lord while He may be found call on Him while He is yet near let the wicked forsake there ways and the unrighteous man his thoughts and return until the Lord who will abundantly pardon…..if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face I will hear from heaven and will heal there land……these are scriptures from the Bible that all the citizens of this evil planet should heed before it is too late……calamity is comming because it is Bilical….prepare spiritualy and physically for faith without works are dead……forit is written and Gos words will not return to Him void….GOD BLESS.

  • This is because it is real. Doomsday is a real event. Real things are going to happen. Believe it or not.
So this is actually helping a movement that is necessary, it is just terrible we are now worrying about it. We have been aware of this event for at least 25 years. We need to be prepared for what is real. Some of the people are preparing for the wrong thing however most who are preparing will be prepared for what is coming 12-21-2012.

If you wait long enough there will always be a Doomsday. These people have no other ability to forsee the future than anyone else. This mania is also in part due to the superstition thats constantly being bred in the media. Global cooling, Global Warming, the Y2K computer crisis (which was grossly exaggerated), and the Mayan Calendar predicted apocalypse. The media constantly quotes Nostradamus, whose writings are so vague they could be interpreted just about anyway. If a true World wide catastrophy does occur such as a giant asteroid, super volcano, or nuclear winter…the pitiful preparations these folks are making will allow them to live a a few months longer than the rest of us…thats it. Once World food production is destroyed, it could take thousands of years to restore this capability. Our civilization will be long gone.

  • Gods letter to us has a horseman with a set of scales in his hands BECAUSE UNJUST WEIGHTS AND MEASURES ARE AN ABOMINATION, it goes on to tell of a days wages for a loaf of bread. also Jesus speaking to the laodicien church who think they are rich they have hundreds of thousands of paper dollars in stocks and bonds and in their banks but dont know they are wretched blind poor and naked, he then counsels them to buy of him gold tried in the fire and white rainment to cover their nakedness.and put on eye salve that they might see their true state. It is a historical fact that 40 years is the average life expectancy of any country that adops a fiat money standard I.E.anything other than Gold or silver before they inflate that money out of existance. 1971 nixon severed the dollar from gold + 40 years = 2011. we are now on borrowed time as far as the dollar goes.40 years is also a probationary time in Gods word. the severance of the dollar from gold was an act of default and declaration of bankruptcy. we have been bankrupt for 40 years and no one has taken notice I suspect by 2015 you will be paying that days wages for your loaf of bread

I think God is highly upset with the preppers who try to do his job and not put all trust in Him . Did you see the birds or animals prep. for doomsday . You are a bunch of Idiots. Not Gods children . I put all my trust in God because He tells me so. AMEN

    • Sunday

    • Paranoid

You have your beliefs, I have mine. You put your trust in God, that’s fine. I’ll trust Sam Colt and Mr Browning. I won’t ask for your, or God’s help, and you don’t bother me. PS a whole bunch of God fearing Mormons, froze to death not 50 miles from me. They would have been a lot better of trusting the people who told them Wyo was not a place to go anywhere in the winter on trust. Faith didn’t keep them as warm as Buffalo robes. Good or bad I fear not hell

    • tuesdaymorning

by having faith in God I doubt he meant hope your freezer is filled with fish in the night while your family starves. If one has faith he will bless your efforts tenfold, ie you plant for your family of 4 but trust the Lord and take in the neighbor family of 4 who didnt prep (like you) and he provides mild weather and soft rains so your garden that was meant to feed 4 now feeds 8 with plenty. Noah didn’t wait for God to build the ark for him, God showed him the signs and he built it himself and was spared.

    • uh huh

nice how God’s child calls everyone idiots..a bit self righteous arent we? God doesnt like it when you call His Children Idiots…

Yeah, but what about me who is diabled? I depend on my doc to fill my medicine pump every 6 weeks. He not around, I prepare all I want, spend all the money in the world, and without my doc or medical care I die in 6 weeks, so why plan? I am screwed anyways….

You can speak to your doctor and voice your concerns and see if he can offer any advice or assistance in the event something were to happen. He may be willing to write advanced prescriptions which you can get and store for emergencies. It’s better than doing nothing. Take control of your situation.

      Good evening.

  • Wolf

Please leave religion out of serious discussion. There is no place for imaginary friends when speaking of real world events that may happen. Seriously.

    • shan

How blind you are…how sad. Theoretical physics is exploring the boundaries of this reality you speak of, and are coming to the conclusion that this universe is a digital simulation of a larger reality.

      Physics and the Bible:

References are at bottom. If you aren’t willing to follow up, your laziness is your own problem. Be careful of condescending to people who have done more research than you have. It makes you look a bit of the fool.

Doomsday was instilled very early in my life. I also got caught up in preparing for the worse, college classes in the 70’s really opened up my eyes and I did pretty good about putting food stores away and lots of other stuff. Back in the early 80’s the “Gloom & Doom” got overwhelming for me and I moved to Montana and lived simple. I forced myself to live without comforts, like t.v. or refrigerator and I did pretty good and it helps me now in these times. It got to a point where I couldn’t sleep so I had to turn everything off and refocus my life to living and bring my soul into spiritual balance. I now live on an island and my home is 2 blocks from the oceans edge. I grow a garden, I can up food and have all those containers ready in the event that I need to fill them with fresh water. I have to face the fact also that I live in the shadow of a volcano and several others, which put’s my location just about right on top of the fault line. It’s so beautiful here. I’m good with God, I have been Baptized and washed in His blood. If I survive an event I will do all that I can to help others with love and compassion. My young life is over, I’m too old to give birth to children, even communes don’t want me anymore. I hope my garden continues to grow. I’m going to take a walk on the beach now, maybe I’ll see a big wave! Shalom

To the person who said that God will step in for Christians etc. He also had a story about the virgins and having their oil lamps ready. And when the time came there were those who weren’t prepared with enough oil and they got left out.
I believe its in one of the gospels.

  • With all the trouble going on in Europe with the Euro and the financial crises. I find it a little scary that one of the largest banks in Italy has frozen all their customers accounts. People are stuck over their with no way to get their money. I have been looking for a place to get some food to store just in case that ever happened here. I have tried several samples from different providers and all of the stuff I tried sucked. I did find a company called Go Foods and their stuff is actually pretty good. If anyone is interested in being prepared if something does happen here the link is below. I also put some links of the crap that is happening in Europe.

  • Carmen

I agree with your comment that disasters are colorless. However, you assumed that Gabrial was black. Singh is an indian surname. He is of indian ancestry. Your comment could be considered racist and ignorant. The fact is 50,000 blacks died in German Nazi death camps along with millions of others in addition to the travesty of 11 million jews during the Holocaust.

There is nothing wrong with preparing for disaster. Disaster and tragedy are colorless. It will be so wonderful when we see ourselves as the human race and not be limited or defined by the boundaries of skin color. I hoped we would have learned something from Nazi Germany about this evil.

    Prep on!!!

  • kandi

has any one got prepratins from a massive volcanic eruptions

  • Annie

This website is really quite funny.
I’m noticing a pattern in where people seem to be from and what people think will happen and how they can prepare. A lot of people are religeous.
I don’t understand that why, if the area you live in is at such a high risk of disaster, that you still live there? Why don’t you just move away from the edges of plates where most disasters occur? Move inland, move country? It would be cheaper than what that article says was spent.
You can have gardens but if a real disaster occured, how do you know it’d be any good to you? Just move house.
The euro crisis is not nearly as bad as people are making it out to be, take it from a european.

    • Annie – Not everyone can afford to pack up and move. I have sure if most people could pack up and move, they would have done so.

  • I have been doing my best to prepare (storing food, bug out plan, etc…). I am single, and I don’t make much money, I work a few jobs here and there (due to health issues that I am working on naturally), and I live with other people who aren’t interested in preparing. It’s hard but I am praying. I know a few people who are trying to prepare as well. I have always been a “prepper”, but not as much as I am now. Anyone who can give me a few tips e-mail me asouthernwriter(at) Thanks

  • buttburger

I recommend adn James rawles site. is racist as heck, ran me right out of town. The other ones are full of solid people who want a community.

  • Treecie

First off, I wish I were better prepared, even though we are told in the Bible to not worry about tomorrow. As far as the end of the world as we know it, the Bible says not even the angels in Heaven know the day that Jesus will return. So, I have faith in God that he will protect me and mine, but I do wish I had more of a stockpile to make things easier on myself if something were to happen. For all of you that don’t believe in God, I pity you and I promise you this, one day, THAT day, you will believe in Him for all eternity. For those of you that prep, good job. God tells the birds to build nests, squirrels to store up nuts, and bears to eat their fill before hybernation. Why then, would we do any different. My opinion is, have faith in God and use the blessings He gives us to prepare for the “winter”.
Goodnight to all of you and God be with you.

    • God helps those who help themselves… He did say prepare for his coming.. that means being there to see it happen I think.

      • SAR

It should be noted that the phrase “God helps those who help themselves” is not in the bible though most think it is.

        • Carrie McColl

I didn’t say it was in the bible… He DID say prepare for his return though because “we will not know the time or place.” I am not religious anymore, I have nothing to prove, I don’t care about semantics and correction I am glad it made you feel a bit better to correct a statement. 🙂 Happiness to you

    • KingOfTexas

Don’t forget about the parable of the wheat and tares. 🙂 The good will suffer with the bad. I don’t fear much but I do want to be prepared.

    • Mauno Matonen

Bible has incredible stories of prepping. Josef with seven years of abundance and famine and of course the prepper of the all preppers – Noah.

Because we know from the Bible what’s going to happen, then we are living by our faith if we prepare for the coming things.

“A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.” – Proverbs 22:3

And if you’re head of a family, then it’s your responsibility to lead in faith and also prepare for the tribulation (even though I’m pre-trib).

“But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.” – 1. Timothy 5:8

I believe prepping is as important in this day as building an ark was in Noah’s day.

Looks like one to prepare for the future is to write, publish, and sell items on this and other venues. What a shame to you who profit from scaring others. I am sure those of you who are profiting are reinvesting those profits. do you think we are stupid!!

  • Steve

These people are idiots. Where will they get the gas for these trucks? Why do they think gold will be woth anything, you can’t eat gold.

Tough Love. That’s what more people need to prepare.

What can someone who lives in apt in the city do besides stockpile. How can I protect my apt?

  • Nick

I’m even getting ready about the end of the world most important thing
Start getting healthy quit drinking bad beverages like coffee sodas and
Quit eating junk food all this stuff it’s no good in the end of the world
infect coffee tightens up the muscle system and its cripple up your
Nervuse system makes you feel so crazy that people thinks you crazy
Are something while you have the jitters in your system by how you feel
From it and another important thing gotta quit smoking ciggerates
And drugs ok look it here about alien invasion you gotta be brave and
Freaking smart but not dump if you got a alien on the ground make sure their dead don’t listen to your brother or sister because aliens are
Are crazy strong I’m not kidding around just save your bullets hit it with
A bat instead or big rock enough to crush the head or use your both
Feet to crush the chess or if you have a knife cut the aliens kneck
Here’s a another thing if someone has a door with a hallway you could
Kill 3 or 4 aliens in one shot first get some towels on the each side of the hallway make sure theirs no leaking through the towels from the water leaking through it then have put a electrified system death row
Along the highway then have some shooting spots aim against front the door you will end up anillated them and have some traps around the house then you really finished of the aliens that way make sure you have enough traps their might be many aliens come to earth make your
Salves some enough weapons besides guns and anather thing have the door be electrified to if a alien trying to open the door to here’s a
Anather tip against the aliens make a big huge lighting system outside
The house then you over come your fear then if you turn it on them you will make them scared and terrified for sure then you could drop with your guns have the inside the house no lights on that way you will be
Almost invisible against them then the aliens will be wiped out every time if you do this here’s anather thing put a lot of protection on your self like wear a football uniform and put on some steel toe boots to
And have some spikes on the football helmet like nails and on the shoulders to put on the heavy duty carpenter pants put them on to
First have some knee pads on your knees to then make a deadly weapon with a bat with nails make it like very heavy duty it could last very long against the aliens or zombie.

  • Anon1992

I secretly believe this is a real possibility and want to be a ‘prepper’ too to somewhat of a lesser extent. I am a British, 22 year old, female, white Atheist with a Master’s degree. My partner does not believe in this potential chaos and thinks these are ‘crazy people’ so I haven’t said I also feel this way and am not going to tell anyone that I do. Think of the London Riots, look how quickly chaos exploded then. It seems to make sense that surely this could happen again. I’d encourage anyone interested to watch a film called ‘War Book’ (you can probably see if for free online) it’s an intellectual series of socio-economic events down a slippery slope leading to this type of crisis. Seeing that film was really the ‘cherry on the cake’ for me, but I imagine in such a situation I’d rather die than live in a world like that so would probably hide somewhere underground and stop eating indefinitely.
