Stock Market Crash 2016: This Is The Worst Start To A Year For Stocks Ever

Stock Market Collapse 2016We have never had a year start the way that 2016 has started.  In the U.S., the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 have both posted their worst four-day starts to a year ever.  Canadian stocks are now down 21 percent since September, and it has been an absolute bloodbath in Europe over the past four days.  Of course the primary catalyst for all of this is what has been going on in China.  There has been an emergency suspension of trading in China two times within the past four days, and nobody is quite certain what is going to happen next.  Eventually this wave of panic selling will settle down, but that won’t mean that this crisis will be over.  In fact, what is coming is going to be much worse than what we have already seen.

On Thursday I was doing a show with some friends, and we were amazed that stocks just seemed to keep falling and falling and falling.  The Dow closed down 392 points, and the NASDAQ got absolutely slammed.  At this point, the Dow and the NASDAQ are both officially in “correction territory”, and some of the talking heads on television are warning that this could be the beginning of a “bear market”.  But of course some of the other “experts” are insisting that this is just a temporary bump in the road.

But what everyone can agree on is that we have never seen a start to a year like this one.  The following comes from CNN

The global market freakout of 2016 just got worse.

The latest scare came on Thursday as China’s stock market crashed 7% overnight and crude oil plummeted to the lowest level in more than 12 years.

The Dow dropped 392 points on Thursday. The S&P 500 fell 2.4%, while the Nasdaq tumbled 3%.

The wave of selling has knocked the Dow down 911 points, or more than 5% so far this year. That’s the worst four-day percentage loss to start a year on record, according to FactSet stats that go back to 1897.

When CNN starts sounding like The Economic Collapse Blog, you know that things are really bad.  I particularly like their use of the phrase “global market freakout”.  I might have to borrow that one.

Even some of the biggest and most trusted stocks are plummeting.  For instance, Apple dropped to $96.45 on Thursday.  It is now down a total of 28 percent since hitting a record high of more than 134 dollars a share back in April.

So that means that if someone put all of their retirement money into Apple stock last April (which may have seemed like a really good idea at that time), by now more than one-fourth of that money is gone.

For months, I have been warning that the exact same patterns that we witnessed just prior to the great stock market crash of 2008 were happening again.  To me, the parallels between 2008 and 2015/2016 were just uncanny.  And now other very prominent names are making similar comparisons.  According to the Washington Post, George Soros says that the way this new crisis is unfolding “reminds me of the crisis we had in 2008″…

Influential investor George Soros said that China had a “major adjustment problem” on its hands. “I would say it amounts to a crisis,” he told an economic forum in Sri Lanka, according to Bloomberg News. “When I look at the financial markets, there is a serious challenge which reminds me of the crisis we had in 2008.”

Don’t get me wrong – I am certainly not a supporter of George Soros.  My point is that we are starting to hear a lot of really ominous talk from a lot of different directions.  All over the world, people are starting to understand that the next great financial crisis is already here.

As I write this tonight, I just feel quite a bit of sadness.  A lot of hard working people are going to lose a lot of money this year, and that includes people that I know personally.  I wish that my voice had been clearer and louder.  I wish that I could have done more to get people to understand what was coming.  I wish that my warnings could have made more of a difference.

I just think about how I would feel if everything that I had worked for all my life was suddenly wiped out.  And that is what is going to end up happening to some of these people.  When you lose everything, it can be absolutely debilitating.

You only make money in the markets if you get out in time.  And unfortunately, most of the general population will be like deer in the headlights and won’t know which way to move.

There will be up days for the markets in our near future.  But don’t be fooled by them.  It is important to remember that some of the greatest up days in U.S. stock market history were right in the middle of the stock market crash of 2008.  So don’t let a rally fool you into thinking that the crisis is over.

The financial crisis that began in the second half of 2015 is now accelerating, and everything that we have witnessed over the past few days is just a natural extension of what has already been happening.

Personally, I am just really looking forward to this weekend when I will hopefully get caught up on some rest.  Plus, my Washington Redskins will be hosting a playoff game on Sunday, and if they find a way to win that game that will put me in a particularly positive mood.

It is good to enjoy these simple pleasures while we still can.  Unprecedented chaos is coming this year, and we are all going to need strength and courage for what is ahead.

That a few players in the game, have far more information, than the rest. Thus, if a person can not do, as you suggest. It is time, to get out of the game.

          Most investors go on the premise that the large market players will play be the rules embodied in law.

          But they (the large speculators) brazenly break the law and the Government just looks the other way. With this situation, no small- time player has a chance to make the right moves however knowledgable he may be on market technicalities.

          I wouldn’t say so much that there’s a few players with information so much as there are a number of players that have a lot more power than the majority. That can be informational power, political power, hands-on market access power, and/or monetary power.. some of which go quite hand-in-hand.. and yes, they can rig the game accordingly.
          Fund managers have tremendous clout in the market vs the little guy.

    You’ve done fine Michael. Not much more you could do really. The timing on this remains impossible to specify with certainty. All I know for sure is that cash remains the place to be. Almost bought a ton of Conoco today, since I do believe oil is oversold. But thing is, the overall market has a long, long, way down. Best to wait. Be patient. A lot of money can be had, but patience, patience, patience, patience. Wait until it is down there at 11,000, 12,000. Wait, wait, wait.

            The New Testament original was written in Greek and the original is in Greece. There was a space of time after the death of Jesus to the first books of The New Testament being written. Books were rare in those days and most people could never afford a book let alone read one. Verbal transmission was also typical till the words would be written down.

            Paul the apostle is believed to have written most of the books of The New Testament. Paul was Jewish and Roman and ORIGINALLY the biggest persecutor of the early folllowers of Yeshua. Yeshua changed Paul in a heartbeat and he went from persecuting ( stoning ) ouch the early followers of Yeshua to Preaching and authoring the words of God to all. He was mostly responsible for the spread /success of the early church. He also died for his faith in YESHUA !

            You make an assumption that because there was no stenographer following Jesus around….this denotes a lack of credibility.

            The first apostles all died for their faith in Yeshua ( Jesus ), People do not offer their lives up for nothing. I have not seen nor read of any Atheists dying for their faith.

            Evolution and Creation are theories and BOTH should be taught to the young in school. The young should be taught HOW to think not WHAT to think……then THEY make their own decisions. There are many many many biologists that do not believe in your absolute truth BS. The universities focus on evolution because they have become the flagships for LIBERALISM and anti God beliefs.             No, he didn’t. He wrote the Pauline Letters (or at least some of them, the exact number is disputed), and he was not AN APOSTLE! He never met Yeshua! The only evidence that we have is his word that he had his conversion on the road to Damascus. That does not make for good evidence, anywhere or at any time. As to the rest of what he supposedly said, so what? We only have his word for it(maybe…). The bible IS NOT A HISTORICAL TEXT! No matter how much you believe it to be and want it t be, it just isn’t!

            Evolution is a scientific theory(a theory is not a conjecture or a vague guess. Separation of church and state makes this a matter of law. Sorry, it’s never gonna happen! Now if you’d said intelligent design, you may have had a case, but you didn’t, immediate fail!

            This is a very common misconception which is pushed hard by the AGW deniers. It has a grain of truth in it, but not much more than that! Yes, in the 70’s a fringe group of climate scientists claimed that we were entering a new ice age AT THAT TIME, but most ,even then, saw that adding CO2 to the atmosphere would cause the tyndall effect and heating(see Lovelock et al). The consensus now is that yes, we are in an interglacial period and that at some point in the future the earth will suffer one or multiple more glaciations, we just don’t know when, and are probably delaying such with warming CO2 emissions. I know that this slightly more nuanced and scientific treatment of the matter may be anathema to you, but trust me, that is the way it was and is! Obvious to the not hard-of-thinking!

            Not bible colleges, but places to study theology and the classics. There wasn’t really anything else to study at the time! I don’t think though that he really believed that the housing market was solid, he was just talking the market up as a way to instil confidence in it. Markets run on confidence, as do currencies. Not all academics are correct, whatever made you think that they were supposed to be? They’re just more correct on average than you would be! But that’s not too hard, is it now?

Markets used to go up/down just like water seeking its own level and were supported by economic basics not bullshit.             Define ‘bible college’? I tend to think of them as christian madrassas and indoctrination mills. The great universities of the world did not start out that way! Yes, the theology was christian, did you see me disagree with that? Why do you try to ascribe positions to me that I don’t hold. I will happily admit it if proven wrong, in absolute diametric opposite position to ANY religious person!

            They also taught classics as well(Latin and greek and roman and greek culture and literature). These were probably the only 2 subjects taught. Why do you say I have problems with facts?

            These BIBLE colleges were preparing missionaries to go out and spread the Gospel to the world. Obviously they were taught Greek as the New Testament was written in Greek and Greek is an extremely accurate detailed language so for indepth analysis it is a big advantage to speak/understand. I do this in The Old Testament (Tanakh) we go back into Hebrew odio ‘s and Aramaic..

            CLIMATE CHANGE…..
            In the 70 s Global Cooling was on the cover of Time magazine, I saw this cover and read the numerous articles. I lived this era and listened to these scientific experts on TV and on show after show even the Johnny Carson Show and THEY used the words CONSENSUS of scientists These scientists were never called THE FRINGE SCIENTISTS they were the EXPERTS of the day and IF NOT where was the opposite CONSENSUS view on the cover of TIME . The Truth is there was a CONSENSUS of scientists that Global Cooling was in affect.

            Then “The Experts” switched by consensus to Global Warming then “The Experts” said oh no we are wrong again …..and by consensus agreed we dont know what the F is going on and WE have demonstrated our ignorance in FRONT of the whole world. So if we say climate change
            we can never be wrong and then
            we can be the smart scientists that are degrees warrant. What a pile of BS.

            The global cooling to global warning to climate change is all about taxing the more affluent country’s and supporting the less affluent country’s. Also forcing the more affluent successful country’s to purchase carbon tax credits if their CO2 is too high. This is all about the distribution of the wealth of the wealthy country’s and CONTROL.

            It was exactly as I said, there was no consensus. Show me one meta-analysis that says that there was and I will gladly admit that you are right and I was mistaken/wrong.

            I ,too, remember the headlines from the 70’s very well, even though I wasn’t yet 10 years old. It made for brilliant and scary headlines and tv programmes, but it was never a widely held view(that we were entering an ice-age at that time!). BUT the consensus was and is that we are in an interglacial period and the ice WILL be returning at some point in the next 100,000 years. It’s as close to an absolute certainty as you can get( a bit like evolution now I come to think of it…..).

            I will not argue with you about the carbon credits and them being a vehicle for banks and rich people to make money out of everybody else, I think the same way myself and am actually an agnostic about AGW until shown irrefutably that it will be catastrophic. I don’t think that this has been absolutely demonstrated. BUT I trust the climate scientists a lot more than YOU! I just not convinced it will be as bad as advertised! But being the scientist that I am I leave room to be wrong and shift my position because I know that I can’t be certain. Where will you go when proven wrong? Or will you remain in denial as the seawater laps at your ankles?

The scientists had reached the point that their Global Cooling became comical and they reversed ALL they had said and promoted Global Warming with the same ferver and “holier than thou” attitude of WE are the scientists and we know better than you.             I’m a climate change agnostic, I don’t believe it’s been demonstrated to be as certain as some in the scientific establishment seem to think. Having said that on the balance of probabilities I think that using the atmosphere as an aerial sewer is a bad idea and is bound to have deleterious consequences in the long term. The Tyndall Effect illustrates this to a degree of certainty that is not yet apparent(CO2 leads to more energy being trapped in the system and will cause problems of one sort or another).

            So, stop trying to beat me with it, I have nothing invested in it’s verisimilitude(well, not much anyway). ACC is in no way even 1% as certain as evolution via natural selection(99.9999999999% certain). The argument is finished. Your side lost over 100 years ago. Get over it……….

I too failed to warn people, because j was afraid they were going to think i was crazy or a downer, but the truthm is that they would not accept the reality even if i did share with them or try to explainto them, they would rather not want to believe.
    I have sold all of my investment shortly after October and have invested in real estate and OIL, (wish i had more to buy oil now) both a long term play, but plays that will come out on top of everything after the crash is over.

          Real Estate does have a tangible worth, but like other assets, it can depreciate. It still follows the law of supply and demand, and when people don’t have money, that demand lessens. Also, if times are turbulent, urban property, which usually has higher value, can be deemed risky and lose value.

            When China hurts, it works harder and sells more.. that can extend into food products. It really becomes a matter of our government regulations and incentives.

Of course there would be state regulations due to pest considerations, and need for speedy delivery with freshness in mind, but more effective selling/shipping methods may be possible without the price froo frooery that goes to organics.

    This early Fri morning there is one indicator that doesn’t seem to be manipulated and to me is “the number one” barometer. For the last 30 days it has been almost flat while being at historic lows. In the last 24 hrs it is down about 5%.

    Robert Kiyosaki of Rich Dad Poor Dad has constantly said that the 401k is one of the biggest ripoffs of all time. People only know how to make money in a bullish market. I was educated in options trading and know how to make money in a bearish market. For me it’s going to be any exciting time but for other people who don’t have this training they’re going to panic.     Even Robert Kiyosaki is selling options. On one of his radio shows in October he says he sells naked puts stock that he doesn’t even own. He says he got out of the stock market in May. I’ve learned how to do the same thing only they’re called credit spreads. This is what wall street doesn’t want people to do so that they can turn their money over to them. There is a book called 401k(ous) by Andy Tanner, one of Robert Kiyosaki’s advisors on paper assets that explains all about the risks of a 401k and how our government got us into it over 40 years ago with the 401k law called ERISA.

    I saw the data today… and I must say I am very annoyed by the oil price. It is falling further than expected. Which could push the other commodities down again, which in turn could force a new interest hike. Because, the pressure to do so is there. But we reached the bullcrap levels, so it might be temporary. If it’s permanent then something important other than commodities has broken. My guess… it would have to do with the service economy crunch. For the moment it is very shaky ground and I can’t make an assured assertation of the economic conditions except for 2 things: commodities are bad, retails are bad!

      There is no risk of the FED raising interest rates for several reasons.
      1. Global demand for consumption is down and will remain down for many years to come
      2. The sheeple have no money to buy anything even if they wanted to. Their credit is maxed out and nominal wages are way down.
      3. The FED has painted themselves into a corner and are now caught in a liquidity trap. With the national debt at $19 trillion, they cannot raise rates because any substantive increase would make the existing debt un-serviceable.
      IMHO, Mr. Yellen will have no choice but to usher in negative rates.

            The most significant issue short term with AAPL is primarily technical- 80% of time stocks test and hold 80 they will soon test 100 and vice versa. So the fact that AAPL again violated 100 I would expect it to consolidate and rebase in the 80s for seven weeks and then attempt to work higher. On a fundamental basis they’re earning $9.66 per share currently and forecast 10.58 next year approximately 11% growth so my best guesstimate is 10.58×11= 116.38. I’m no big fan of aapl but with a p.e.g ratio of 0.75 the risk/reward ratio is improving IMHO

            IMHO for growth companies that seems to be the best or most prudent guidelines. Many will say it can be up to 2x the growth rate but I don’t sleep well holding at nosebleed levels so a P.E.G. (price/earnings/growth) below 1 is what I prefer. If the forecast is revised then just recalculate using the fresh data. Have to be careful and look for ‘clean’ earnings- for me x out any one-time events – because generally markets may react but will discount them often within three days (three day displacement). There’s many other metrics that ‘speculators’ may use in valuations but solid fundamentals seems best IMHO. If you’re going to trade on other metrics then I would pay very close attention to technicals and especially momentum – % change to closing prices on weekly basis – when the % begins to decline then I’m a seller- price action never lies :)

It is the same principle involving an earthquake, except they form bigger ripples. If you think about that ripple, it seems to disappear over time, but in actuality it is building power and momentum. I believe that this is an apt comparison to our corrupt stawk market.

    Watching the markets unravel is totally surreal, based on the post of the last six months via Michael. As the economy begins to slow down in the first QT, I believe China will begin to sell US treasury’s with no buyers, which could create a vacuum in the market. Causing rates to move up dramatically, this will cause a cascade in the T-bill market and future auctions. The unwinding of the market will result in 1000 point market drops in the next 60-90 days. While the jobs market added 290,000 on Friday, you only have to look back at 2008-2009 when Job losses in some months were 300,000- 400,000. Michigan lost 1,000,000 jobs in a three year period. I remember driving downtown to Detroit on I-75 from Troy at 7:30 in the morning with no traffic. I believe the speed on the unravel will stun the talking heads on CNBC.

    Good to see the markets finally coming back to reality! It was ridiculous that many of the high fliers like Amazon, Facebook, Google, etc were masking the damage done below the surface last year. Now they are falling too.

    Every time the markets have fallen over the past several years, there was another around of stimulus. That game appears to be over and we could see a 50%+ decline from here without Fed intervention. Next week will be interesting to see if some of the key technical levels hold…

    On a side note, just saw The Big Short. Wow! If you haven’t seen it yet, go see it! We have another big crisis on our hands in 2016 except on a much larger scale than the last. 2008-9 was mainly subprime mortgages. Now we have student loans, sovereign debts, consumer debts, corporate debts, sub-prime auto loans, fracking loans, you name it. All about to blow up at the same time. Talk about dynamite!

      And vise versa. Every time the market has a correction the bears predict it is the end of humanity. The truth is somewhere in the middle. But if I were going to bet I would bet on people will continue to watch football, eat, drink soda and beer, use toilet paper, copulate, and make babies. There are 7 billion people in the world and that’s a lot of economic pressure to buy goods and services. Life goes on. I knew a prepper back in the early 90s. He had $10,000 of freeze dried food. I ask him what was the shelf life. He said 10 years. I guess he either threw it out or ate it all. That was back in the 90s! 20 years later and what he was prepping for never happened.

    Why did they not shut down trading back in fall/winter of 2008-2009? Remember that free fall with no one bothering to stop anything then. Many mutual funds bottomed out at zero as I remember. Since there is no QE anymore to prop up their failures, they are “stopping trading.” Well, how convenient for them.

Perhaps the hand off back from central banks back to money centers and regional is attempt to get banks back to their normal course of biz of creating capital to the “broader economy” – rather than their current symbiotic relationship with CBs).

  • Sometimes The Dragon Wins. (which really sucks!) I really don’t know what compels folks to continue to do business with agents of The Great Red Dragon. I started in 2006 tryin’ to educate people (for Nothing) and gave up around 2013. Over 1650 free copies of the 1889 book have been downloaded, so the time wasn’t wasted, and the old book didn’t die. Maybe another generation will see the similaries.

    Some good points…BUT… if you really look back to 2008 OIL & JNK did not fall in advance of stocks, it was really all happening at the same time. In fact, if you remember, OIL had a huge rally in 2007/2008 and then it crashed at the same stocks were crashing. Just thought I would mention this as the article portrays a different scenario than what actually occurred.
