Stone Cold Proof That Government Economic Numbers Are Being Highly Manipulated

Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on Google+Share on LinkedInShare on StumbleUponEmail this to someone

Detective - Public DomainHow in the world does the government expect us to trust the economic numbers that they give us anymore?  For a long time, many have suspected that they were being manipulated, and as you will see below we now have stone cold proof that this is indeed the case.  But first, let’s talk about the revised GDP number for the first quarter of 2014 that was just released.  Initially, they told us that the U.S. economy only shrank by 0.1 percent in Q1.  Then that was revised down to a 1.0 percent contraction, and now we are being informed that the economy actually contracted by a whopping 2.9 percent during the first quarter.  So what are we actually supposed to believe?  Sometimes I almost get the feeling that government bureaucrats are just throwing darts at a dartboard in order to get these numbers.  Of course that is not actually true, but how do we know that we can actually trust the numbers that they give to us?

Over at, John Williams publishes alternative economic statistics that he believes are much more realistic than the government numbers.  According to his figures, the U.S. economy has actually been continually contracting since 2005.  That would mean that we have been in a recession for the last nine years.

Could it be possible that he is right and the bureaucrats in Washington D.C. are wrong?

Before you answer that question, read the rest of this article.

It just might change your thinking a bit.

Another number that many have accused of being highly manipulated is the inflation rate.

But we don’t have to sit around and wonder if that figure is being manipulated.  The truth is that even those that work inside the Federal Reserve admit that it is being manipulated.

As Robert Wenzel recently pointed out, Mike Bryan, a vice president and senior economist in the Atlanta Fed’s research department, has been very open about the fact that the way inflation is calculated has been changed almost every month at times…

The Economist retells a conversation with Stephen Roach, who in the 1970s worked for the Federal Reserve under Chairman Arthur Burns. Roach remembers that when oil prices surged around 1973, Burns asked Federal Reserve Board economists to strip those prices out of the CPI “to get a less distorted measure. When food prices then rose sharply, they stripped those out too—followed by used cars, children’s toys, jewellery, housing and so on, until around half of the CPI basket was excluded because it was supposedly ‘distorted'” by forces outside the control of the central bank. The story goes on to say that, at least in part because of these actions, the Fed failed to spot the breadth of the inflationary threat of the 1970s.

I have a similar story. I remember a morning in 1991 at a meeting of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland’s board of directors. I was welcomed to the lectern with, “Now it’s time to see what Mike is going to throw out of the CPI this month.” It was an uncomfortable moment for me that had a lasting influence. It was my motivation for constructing the Cleveland Fed’s median CPI.

I am a reasonably skilled reader of a monthly CPI release. And since I approached each monthly report with a pretty clear idea of what the actual rate of inflation was, it was always pretty easy for me to look across the items in the CPI market basket and identify any offending—or “distorted”—price change. Stripping these items from the price statistic revealed the truth—and confirmed that I was right all along about the actual rate of inflation.

Right now, the Federal Reserve tells us that the inflation rate is sitting at about 2 percent.

But according to John Williams, if the inflation rate was calculated the same way that it was in 1990 it would be nearly 6 percent.

And if the inflation rate was calculated the same way that it was in 1980 it would be nearly 10 percent.

So which number are we supposed to believe?

The one that makes us feel the best?

And without a doubt, “2 percent inflation” sounds a whole lot better than “10 percent inflation” does.

But anyone that does any grocery shopping knows that we are definitely not in a low inflation environment.  For much more on this, please see my previous article entitled “Inflation? Only If You Look At Food, Water, Gas, Electricity And Everything Else“.

Of course the unemployment rate is being manipulated as well.  Just consider the following excerpt from a recent New York Post article

In case you are just joining this ongoing drama, the Labor Department pays Census to conduct the monthly Household Survey that produces the national unemployment rate, which despite numerous failings is — inexplicably — still very important to the Federal Reserve and others.

One of the problems with the report is that Census field representatives — the folks who knock on doors to conduct the surveys — and their supervisors have, according to my sources, been shortcutting the interview process.

Rather than collect fresh data each month as they are supposed to do, Census workers have been filling in the blanks with past months’ data. This helps them meet the strict quota of successful interviews set by Labor.

That’s just one of the ways the surveys are falsified.

The Federal Reserve would have us believe that the unemployment rate in the U.S. has fallen from a peak of 10.0 percent during the recession all the way down to 6.3 percent now.

But according to, the broadest measure of unemployment is well over 20 percent and has kept rising since the end of the last recession.

And according to the Federal Reserve’s own numbers, the percentage of working age Americans with a job has barely increased over the past four years…

Employment Population Ratio 2014

The chart above looks like a long-term employment decline to me.

But that is not the story that the government bureaucrats are selling to us.

So where does the truth lie?

What numbers are we actually supposed to believe?

Please feel free to share your thoughts by posting a comment below…

  • Mike Smithy

Considering that inflation was a variable in the -2.9% Q1 GDP figures, can you just imagine how large the contraction really was? TPTB are already conjuring a cover story in the event Q2 GDP contracts. The media schmucks will suggest that the Spring was too wet or too dry or too cool or too hot or whatever B.S. they can conjure up.

  • K

Michael, the truth is if the Federal Government told me the sky was blue. I would go outside and check. They have zero credibility with me. Governments always lie, but not usually about everything. It was said, you can not fool all the people all of the time. True, but it seems you can fool 80% of the people all of the time.

    • MichaelfromTheEconomicCollapse

That made me smile. It is true – we can’t trust anything that the government says these days.

    • Syrin

Amen brother (sister?). I am right there with you

      • K

    • xander cross

If government always lie, then why do you all vote for Ron Paul? He was a member of the federal government for decades and also got paid in kickbacks from bankers.

      • K

Speaking for myself, I did not vote for Ron Paul. Is Ron Paul more honest than most? Yes, but I will never vote for a Democrat or a Republican ever again. They have equally sold out this Country.

        • xander cross

Ron Paul is honest? Since when? Now that is a lie.

          • K

I said more honest. Yes I feel he is more honest, than Mitch McConnell, or Harry Reid, or quite a few others. I did not say he was fully honest. I know of no politician that is fully honest.

Did you know that people are safe to recognize any member of mankind as being a Jew or a Gentile?

From out of those two broad categories of people, God calls out people to His Son by the Spirit they are converted, they believe and thus become members of Christ.

Don’t you want to be in on that?

      • Malcolm Reynolds

That would be illegal. Do you have proof that RP was paid kickbacks by bankers or are you just spewing loony juice?

        • RedPillPlease

He splattered the walls with his own defecation. Ron Paul wrote a check to the US Treasury every year he served with left over funds that had been allocated to run his office for each Congressional year! These RP bashers are completely ignorant fools!

          • Malcolm Reynolds

            Actually, I didn’t know that.

        • RedPillPlease

Ron Paul chaired the Finance subcommittee. Ron Paul took apart Ben Bernanke every chance he could. Has this joker ever read: “End the Fed” by Mr. Ron Paul?

And after awhile, they began to think up silly ideas of what God was like and what he wanted them to do.

The result was that their foolish minds became dark and confused.

  • Simple Simon

All of the numbers are manipulated by the government to suit their needs. They then revise the numbers as needed later on hoping that people won’t notice the revision just like with the Q1 GDP. LIBOR/FX/Metals/Energy are all fixed. My friend was just notified that the health insurance that he buys for himself is going up by 15%.

Zero and/or negative interest rates are the new normal. The gov’t has no way out and this is the path that they have chosen to go down.

People need to wake up and start organizing before every last cent they own is taken from them.

    • Syrin

If you can figure out how to wake them up, let me know. I’ve been spreading the word for half a decade or more. I find more people happy to live in blissful ignorance than who prefer to be cautiously alert.

..”What the common man longs for in this world, before and above all his other longings, is the simplest and most ignominious sort of peace: the peace of a trusty in a well-managed penitentiary.

Above all, he puts it above his liberty”..

I have been trying to wake up people since the mid seventies. You have to realize only 5% at most can accept the truth. The ones that will wont be hard to convince. Forget the others.

Once the bubble bursts, I am afraid that they won’t be able to put Humpty Dumpty back together again.

      • Drud

That’s the conundrum isn’t it: do we hope that the charade continues or, since it inevitable, do we hope it falls apart soon and quickly? Personally, although I very much like our current peace and relative prosperity, I would rather get to it, deal with the devastation of the collapse (if we survive) and get to whatever comes next.

      • Jimbo

        Hi Michael,
I agree with the majority of what you say about the economy and I subscribe wholly to the idea that a collapse is imminent.

You use facts to illustrate in simple terms what is inevitably coming our way.

I arrived at the same conclusion by my own life experiences, knowledge of the economy, politics and human nature.

I am not right or left wing. I find it hard to classify my political leanings. Pure capitalism is an ideal system until those at the top abuse their position. Pure communism is ideal as well but there never has been such a thing as pure communism in the history of the mankind. I am somewhere in
        the middle.

I am not racist or homophobic.

I was raised as a Christian and I accept a lot of what Christianity offers but I also understand that other cultures have their own
beliefs and I question why Christianity is the only way.

I am not anti Muslim. I have worked with true Muslim people and they have very similar values towards their families and community as any other religion.

The point of writing this is that the Economic Collapse Blog appears to outsiders to be a right wing, Bible bashing extremist view of the
world rather than an informative guide to the world economy.

Mike Maloney does brilliant videos but the sales pitch for gold and silver destroys the credibility of his videos by making them appear to
        be infomercials for his products.

I joined CND (campaign for nuclear disarmament) in 1980 which at the time was a Christian movement promoting the idea that it was not
mans place to destroy the earth just because he could. I left when I was roundly criticised for being a meat eater? CND,which had a very simple and admirable message, became hijacked by everyone else with an agenda to push. CND became a left wing, save the whale, disabled lesbian vegan movement and the original message got lost in the fog.

The whole point of this post is to say that though I admire your economic expertise, I feel it would be better for your message if this
site stuck to the facts, got away from the in your face selling of prepping items and toned down the right wing leaning.

        This is just my opinion.

No surprise here. The Soviets did the same, especially towards the bitter end even as their empire collapsed under their feet.

The real question is how long they can keep the various scams going. Student loans, UST shell game (research this one if ya haven’t already folks, this makes Madoff look like an amateur), QE, ZIRP, propping up da zombie banks with da huge OTC Derivatives books.

Remember people if Bank of America had to use the same accounting standards that banks and financial institutions EVERYWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD had to use, it would be the second biggest bank IN THE WORLD.

This ^^^ is a bank that has a Baa2 credit rating!!

The gubermint is a system of professional liars. For years they’ve thrown everything, including the kitchen sink, at the problem they themselves have created in order to buy time for themselves to prepare for the inevitable. They’ve done a masterful job at keeping the herd from panicking, giving them time to duck and cover. But one day they will have to come out and face a populous…a very angry populous. A populous who will instantly recognize them, point at them and say 1 word…”GET’EM!

    • dscott1

They have already been preparing for this. They are militarizing all the government entities and have been buying up billions of rounds of ammunition. if you want have a clear view of the situation, look at the USA debt counter of Fox new. apparently you need to sell 50 percent of USA asset to China to get rid of your debt, still, it won’t fix the problem and debt will continue to rise. that s the big problem, you don’t produce enough to maintain your life style and whatever you do, you will still be in debt.

to a certain point, there will be a war one day. will China invade USA or USA will print 60 trillion dollars ?
can you sell Texas to China, who cares of the lone star State with his Cowboys?

They don’t want a plan to curtain spending. It is about bankrupting the coutry so that they can install a dictatorship. Bankrupt the people and they will come begging for food. Hello, comrade. That’s when communism will start.

  • voltaic

Inflation is the most manipulated. While the cost of a large screen TV continues to decline, the cost of food is skyrocketing. You don’t need a TV to survive, but food on the other hand….

But what’s really being manipulated? From yesterday alone you have -2.9% 1st quarter GDP – a government number – or the following:

Markit’s US Services PMI printed at 61.2 (massively beating the 58.0 expectations) and soaring to its highest since records began.

So there you have it. The government number is worse than expected and the private survey is better than expected.

    Choose your noise….

It’s simple. American sheeple would rather hear comforting lies than uncomfortable truth. The Washington idiot is only too happy to comply.

    • steve

The more people I talk to the more I agree with this statement. Everyone wants to feel good and skip out on anything negative.

  • The USG LIES….lies about the inflation rate, unemployment rate, Fast&Furious, Benghazi, criminal illegals who are in the USA, etc.

It’s all about the repeat of history….when a government loses the trust of it’s people then there is only one thing left to do and that is become a dictatorship.

When Sotero took power gas was $1.87/gal now $4. My back of the hand calculation shows a 8% increase year over year for 6 years. Given how the price of petrol affects everything it is now surprising food stuffs have exploded. Then there is the QE which I liken to a nuclear weapon waiting to explode into hyperinflation. Hard times lie ahead.

  • DesertPaine

Commenters seem to get the Bigger Picture. Govt lies about inflation, about everything else.

What is truly mystifying is that while we are willing to question USG more quickly, we are still inclined to give USG the benefit of the doubt from the git-go. Instead of just presuming that every time they open their mouth they are lying, manipulating or parsing. Like we would do for any other chronic liar.

  • Richard

Michael, you really do need to ignore John Williams. He means well but he exaggerates excruciatingly and moreover he has been yelling (pun not intended) about hyperinflation for as long as I can remember and he has been – simply – horrendously wrong.

    • St. Ferd III

And your proof is what ? Gov’t numbers ? LOL. Check reality, check out of gov’t propaganda. Not much has changed since Sargon the so-called Great.

Actually it’s stagflation, the worst of both worlds.
Commodities you need inflate, disposable income dries up and eventually it leads to shortages..
No printing has been done since before Y2K..

-just debt, the killer of nations.

    • Jimbo

In between the two extremes of government numbers and alternative media “fear mongering” you will find the truth. Everyone has an agenda and it is up to you to decipher their messages and extract the truth. My own experience tells me that inflation is not 2% and that we are not in a recovery.

    • Gay Veteran

5-10% inflation PER year will destroy you in a few years

  • St. Ferd III

Gov’ts exist to lie, distort and control. Hence globlaoneywarming, no inflation, QE is working, incomes are up, the consumer is ‘robust’, and stocks are ‘fairly priced’. Unemployment means nothing, the reality is that 35% of the total population supports the rest. This is a business model that is doomed to fail. Inflation is 5-10% a year if you include all costs from health-care to housing, to tuition, golf dues, food, energy, utilities and even car maintenance. ‘Models’ are junk and easily manipulated. See globaloneywarming – another gov’t lie – for more detail.

We are living off of the rest of the world & the rest of the world is trying to climb out from under this fact.Soon the outside world will throw off the yoke of the petrodollar system & end the US dollar’s status as the global reserve currency. When this happens, whether next week or next year, the Dollar will sink like a piece of lead thrown into a pond!

  • sharonsj

The only reason the government lies about inflation: it means they can pay much less money (in the annual cost of living raises) to the old, the disabled, the poor, veterans, and widows and orphans. So much easier to screw them than to take tax breaks away from big business!

    • Richard Fontaine

With all due respect, not the “only”. See above.

    • davidmpark

As a poor person who is caring for a disabled spouse, my children and assisting other orphans and widows – I disagree. It’s the methodology of a welfare state to do this to the lesser of their people – there is never enough money to create that equality many preach and dream of. More money will not solve it as the demands will multiply to exceed any requisitions. Removing tax breaks won’t do much as producers will refuse to produce here – or will after much coercion and threats. That’s why it never works.

GSOB, you have got to be kidding. Muslims are as racist as anyone else, maybe more so. ISIS (Sunni Arabs) has been executing other Sunnis just because they were Turkmen, that is just a recent example. Gulf state nationals treat Pakis, Egyptians, Palastinians, Indians etc muslims as dirt and even if they are born in the Gulf they will never get citizenship.
In Cairo I always noticed that Sudanese and Nubians had menial jobs (Nubian boabs were common). They also prize marrying fair skinned girls and rejected dark skinned suitors.

  • Richard Fontaine

Well the other main reason they low ball inflation is that it makes it possible for Big Government (aka the world’s largest borrower) to pay much, much less than is reasonable to borrow money. Think about it, and of course that isn’t accidental. And to compound that thievery remember all those taxes on capital gains you pay? Well the reason your house has gone up over the last thirty years, and stocks as well etc…is not unrelated to the value of the dollar going down. It is in fact mainly the value of the dollar going down (i.e the definition of prices going up aka inflation) that makes it look like your gold, your house, your stocks are “appreciating”. And of course our Big Government betters are taxing us on every dime of that “appreciation”.

  • Jimbo

I keep a simple spreadsheet that I use to track my family finances. My own experience is that inflation has been around 10% since 2003 when I started the spreadsheet. Some things have gone down in price (TV’s, computers and cell phones), but these are things that I don’t buy very often.
Of course we are being lied to.

    • Drud

Obviously. We do the same thing, Jimbo. Three years ago $300 went to groceries and we had a couple dollars left over. Today $400 and we are ALWAYS short. Unfortunately, this type of math is way over the head of your average PhD economist and nobody that works at high levels of government have seen the inside of a grocery store in decades.

For years, government has gotten away with the most ridiculous lies known to man.
I have a basic idea. If we catch these people in lies to the public, then hold recall elections.
I say if we catch any of them in three different lies then they need to be fired. Make it easier to fire them.
Take away the franchise that only allows Democrats or Republicans to be elected at the local levels. Now that would really stir the pot.
    Open it up to everyone.
It would never work of course. But just imagine catching the President in 3 different lies and recalling him from office on that basis.

  • DJohn1

The reason the government is distorting the true is that if COLA was to tell the truth, they would owe all the Social Security retirees about 10% this year.
Instead they gave us about a $6 raise a week over a 52 week year.
The entire idea behind COLA in Social Security checks was to push more money back into circulation. As long as people lie about it, no law is going to work the way it was supposed to.
    The crime here is lying.

    • DJohn1

We will remember in November all the lies that have been told.

      • I will remember, but the bigger question is will there be anyone to vote for that isn’t going to Washington for the money.

From the top to the bottom everyone has some little investment, house, savings, food, they want to hold on to. The players scamers at the top have more to loose. No one wants the music to stop and will resist any collapse. Its human nature to resist the unknown. If the bankers and media play it right, it will be the American thing to do to donate some of your savings, 401k, tax returns etc. to save America! As things get worse the more desperate measures we will see. The longer this is put off the harder it will hit out of the blue.

Here are a few lies from the UK economy.

Lie, The UK economy is booming with expected growth of 3% this year.
Truth. The UK’s population has officially grown by 5% since 2008 yet GDP is only up by 0.5% in the same timespan. Therefore, GDP per capita is actually down. Also, the national debt has more than doubled in the same period.

Lie. UK economic growth is being led by “the march of the makers” which is a favoured catchphrase of prime minister David Cameron when referring to the manufacturing boom that is supposed to be occurring in the UK.
Truth. UK manufacturing is 7.5% lower as a percentage of GDP compared to 2008. The main new growth in this sector is in the manufacture of building materials for residential construction. This new construction is being fueled by government incentives for homebuyers paid for with deficit spending.

Lie. The UK government is in control of its finances.
Truth. In spite of so called austerity measures and a much championed economic recovery, the UK government is borrowing more year on year than it did last year.

Lie. The UK is in a booming economic recovery.
Truth. The UK is in terminal decline with recent questionable economic growth being fueled by out of control deficit spending.

  • Jimbo

I just read this in the London Daily Mail.

The Confederation for British Industry (CBI) claims that slow retail sales this month (June) are being driven by Englands early exit from the World Cup. They reason that depressed soccer fans are not spending as much??

Last year, they claimed that June retail sales were down because everyone was staying at home to watch Brit tennis star Andy Murray win Wimbledon.

I don’t know which is worse. Expecting us to actually believe this rubbish or the fact that some people really will believe it?

  • fool me twice

Its really simple the western industrial economy is ending. The fed and our elected buffoons are just telling us lie after lie to brainwash us and hope we do not notice the facts. The facts are
Social security benefits are actually reduced every year due the real inflation numbers as compared to the gov’s pixie dust reports
Jobs that are available to the few of us still working are getting low pay, no benefits and no security or health benefits etc. not to mention the defined pension plans are something in a 1950s movie.
So combine the robbery of money owed to citizens and investors in bonds due the false inflation numbers and the failing job wage environment and you get recession and depression and this will not end. We are all going down the tubes rich and poor alike. This is just a slowdown in the perception of what is really happening the end of western economies and the prosperity they had all because of cheap oil.
Everyone claims the bust was caused by the overinflated housing market and bad sub prime loans. Just another lie by the robbers in chief. The economy collapsed because gasoline went to 4.50 plus a gallon and its effect on our economy that was drastic was noted by the banks who quickly refused to loan money anymore thus the crash and here we are now 9 years later 4trillion borrowed to give to banks to reward them for crashing the economy and the average joe shut out of the system.
The banks could see the effect of high oil prices and knew it would end our way of life so they just refused to finance it any longer. We are still in the crapper and now oil is rising again and soon we will have another great recession and this time it will be 100 times worse than the last one we will never recover

I’m trying to figure out John Williams chart that shows that GDP has been in continual decline since 2005. Is he saying that if we just had a 3% drop this last quarter and then next quarter we have a 1% drop when they put it on a graph they don’t mark it as a continuing decline, but mark it on the graph as an upward movement or an improvement from the previous quarter? Then they extrapolate that so-called improvement on the chart through four quarters and call it positive growth in the GDP. Am I reading this right? Is this how the government manipulates the numbers for the GDP?
