Will Americans Be Able To Handle The Next Great Depression? Not If They Are Anything Like This Guy

Will Americans be able to handle the next Great Depression?  The truth is that most Americans today simply do not possess the strength of character to handle losing their jobs, their homes and the inflated lifestyles that we have all enjoyed by spending beyond our means.  During the Great Depression of the 1930s, things were different.  Family units were much stronger, people knew how to rely on each other and most Americans possessed enough morality and inner strength so that they did not freak out when things went from bad to worse.

But that is not the case in the United States today.  Instead, Americans have become a bunch of spoiled brats who come apart at the seams at the first sign of trouble.  We pushed prayer and the Ten Commandments as far out of public life as we could and instead we filled our minds with literally thousands of hours of character-rotting entertainment.  Now our families are falling apart, we’ve raised entire generations who expect the world to be handed to them on a silver platter, and we’ve got tens of millions of crybabies who don’t have any concept of how to respond to hard times.

But hard economic times are coming.  In fact, for many Americans they are already here.  So how will most Americans respond when they start losing their jobs and their homes?  Well, the truth is that we are already seeing a lot of people “go postal” because they simply do not know how to handle these setbacks.  Just consider the video below.  It is footage of one of the greatest office freakouts of all time.  If you were to get fired tomorrow, would you react like this guy?….

The reality is that an economic collapse does not have to be the end of the world.  The guy in the video above could have gone out and tried to get another job or start his own business.  But instead he treated it like it was the end of his life and he threw a massive temper tantrum.

Unfortunately, we are likely to see an increasing number of spoiled Americans throw temper tantrums as the economic collapse goes from bad to worse in the years ahead.  The U.S. financial system is literally coming apart at the seams, and at this point there is very little that can be done to prevent a total economic breakdown.

So we are going to see more Americans trash their homes when they are foreclosed upon, we are going to see more Americans commit insurance fraud, we are going to see more Americans “go postal”, we are going to see more Americans freak out in public and we are going to see more Americans turn to crime.

Why?

Because the collective morality of America has experienced a catastrophic collapse.  People care very little about what is right or wrong anymore.  What they care about is what is going to make themselves happy and comfortable.

The only thing that has been keeping the entire U.S. from turning into New Orleans right after Hurricane Katrina is the relative level of affluence that we are all still experiencing.  Yes, things are not as good as they were, but the United States still has one of the highest standards of living in the world.

For now.

If you want to get an idea of where the U.S. is headed, go spend a few days in Detroit.  Once one of the shining examples of the American Dream, today many areas of Detroit resemble a war zone.  The real unemployment rate in Detroit is somewhere up around 45 or 50 percent and the crime rate is shooting through the roof.  Vandalism is rampant and some houses in the worst areas are virtually unsellable because they aren’t even worth the taxes that must be paid of them.

When people get desperate, their true character comes out.  When the U.S. financial system completely fails one day, the thin veneer of civilization that we all take for granted will evaporate in a matter of days.

At that point we will all wish that we had paid a lot more attention to teaching our kids about “character” and “morality”.

A very good and unfortunately true article. The Greatest Depression is approaching quickly. For your sake and your children’s sake get prepared. Try becoming self sufficient, as best as you can. See my videos to help you prepare on http://www.youtube.com/user/newamericanow

The points made here are sadly very true.

The ignorance that pervades American society will leave many realizing too late what has happened. Hopefully by raising awareness to the issues that threaten us and the tyranny of the American leadership – at least some people may be able to still survive with dignity and grace in spite of external pressures.

This downturn could in the long run turn out to be a renaissance of true creativity and intelligence for those who still possess the ability to think for themselves.

    God Bless

This economic despair is seemingly over or at least according to the news, but the fact is that this is a reprieve or a break in the action where the destructive forces that brought us here are back doing the same things they were before the first collapse. The second wave is coming. Make no mistake about that.

  • John O’Neill

Try telling my brother about the impending economic doom and gloom. He’s convinced everything is going to turn around. I tried to send him articles and he’s says I should be more concerned about my health. Poor chap. This economic boondoggle is going to KILL millions. Make no mistake about that too.

  • John

@FixHealthCare, you’re right that the second wave is coming. The news does keep people informed about some things, but about things like this the news is keeping people in the dark and unprepared.

  • JinderaJIm

Spoke with a friend who has recently been in Detroit and he said it is a war zone – gunfire is fairly constant now – read a report that whole city blocks have been razed and subsistence gardens have been planted – also heard of one reported bear sighting within the city limits. Sadly it will come to other parts of America – hey bunker down, form alliances and try to survive it will be a bumpy ride.

Will everybody play the monopoly game when they know that the banker can’t be trusted to count out the money properly and the guys who have the most real estate and or money are whispering behind your back and making sweet heart deals for themselves?
Is the earth big enough for those players to hide?

  • ecopsych101

    Jimbob,
If that’s sarcasm…then I appreciate it. If not, try to find an american under 25 who is willing to work hard. Here’s my stats over the last 24 months…and I only hire high paid people. 1 guy born in france, 1 guy from Mexico, 1 lady from Russia, 4 guys from India, 1 lady from American Samoa, 2 ladies from Mexico, 1 guy from England, 1 guy from South Africa.(100k+ jobs) I can’t find a single US born kid that’s worth anything. And I look hard. This nintendo generation is collectively worthless. It’s very sad to me and I’m in a position to hire who I want. We have an entire generation of parasites…that only lasts as long as the host has life left in it…the fuse has been burning…and time is running out.

    Chad,

I agree with you “This downturn could in the long run turn out to be a renaissance of true creativity and intelligence for those who still possess the ability to think for themselves.”

I do believe that we need to prepare – people can be heroic during hard times, and our youth need to be engaged in the process.

great article! I work in an ER…. When the s–t really hits the fan, most Americans (90%) will totally fall apart… If they can’t handle a paper cut now (I kid you not!), can you imagine the chaos when things really get rough? When the vicodin runs out? Some parasites make 2-3 visits or more a week to the ER for BS….. the human devolution is truly mind-boggling…

I agree also w ecopsych…. 90% of americans are totally worthless parasites… I hired an american to mow my lawn… he got a cell phone call in the middle of it, said he would come back, never did! I had to finish the half-mowed lawn myself….. I went thru 8 people mowing my lawn, till I finally found someone reliable, on time, gentle w the equipment, willing to work hard…… me! Yep, it is that bad… I hired myself to mow my lawn… Now I am hiring myself to plant it in wildflowers for the coming days when lawnmowing will become impossible…

One of the 8 failures was a 16 year old native born American kid doing some landscaping for me… I had to show him how to use a shovel. He had never picked one up before… Unbelievable! … I told him to slope the dirt away from the house so the water would run down and away from the foundation. He asked me, “What is slope?” I had to draw him a picture!! Pitiful… Down the toilet the american empire falls….

How totally true. In the health store where I work, the people I wait on are spoiled, self-absorbed BRATS.

The other employees and I marvel at the tantrums and attitudes. We all wonder: how are these people going to manage when it all comes undone?

    • Admin

      Very good point Tina!

  • Big J

Man, amazing. I feel like I’ve found a long lost twin while reading this. We have to toughen up, and the only way to do that is keep our families TOGETHER.

    • Admin

Glad you liked it Big J!

Hopefully we can get as many people to wake up while there is still time.

  • PENNY K

I’m 65, and came from very creative, old style common sense family. I know how to do so many things from scratch it would blow your mind. THAT is what gives me confidence.
SKILLS for life, on all levels. I can grow, cook,& preserve food.I can throw together a meal for 6 or more in a hurry out of almost anything. How many of you can make a noodle, a mainstay of hard times ? Can you grow a patch of potatoes? Repair shoes, make shoes for a small child. Hand sew? Mend or iron. Hand wash clothes. Do you know what basic tools are for. What if the web goes? Do you know how to use a library?

More to the point, can you tell when you can’t afford something? Can you tell when you need to go back down the technology scale to provide your needs, because that’s where it’s cheaper? Can you steam rice, mash potatoes? Stop a leak? Can you figure out the cost of your appliances so you know what to turn off and leave off?
Can you tell you can’t afford to use the dryer? Do you know enough about nutrition to know you need to plant a garden? Do you know how much effort is needed for basic jobs, or how long it takes? Can you make yourself get up and walk to get what you need when you have enough for food and gas, but not both? Skills are also nice for barter.

I saw a show on Western kids working in rice fields in Thailand. What BS.Supposedly they’d been there working for 6 weeks. They still had body fat and a double chin.Anybody doing day long hard agri work for 6 weeks would be getting lean and mean.

Character is built as you learn skills and come to respect your own efforts; then you understand the efforts of all. Morality isn’t a stamp you stick on someone, it’s innate unless it’s corrupted. I don’t know what’s happened to our lazy behinds, but it doesn’t seem to me we’ve had enough physical work required of us, so we don’t have a clue how much we’ll need to do..the
whines will be heard to the skies, then weeping..we should start a skill bulletin board and tell each other what we know while we have time.

  • Roy

I think you have a great website. I check back often. I suggest you leave religion, morality and family values out of your posts. Religion has been around forever and it’s created a lot more problems than it has ever solved. Like the jihad on 911 or the christian crusade in Iraq and Afghanistan. The world would be a better place without any organized religion. My god is not better than your god. Keep up the good work and keep the above out of it. People will just tune out if they feel you have a religious agenda.

    To the Church in Laodicea

14″To the angel of the church in Laodicea write:
These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God’s creation. 15I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! 16So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. 17You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. 18I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see. 19Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest, and repent. 20Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me. 21To him who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I overcame and sat down with my Father on his throne. 22He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”

  • Elldee

ecopsych101 – I don’t know what industry you hire for, but I do know a few individuals in their 20s who are hard workers. One is my son. He was going to college full-time, employed part-time, participates in auto racing, and served in the Army Reserves as a staff sergeant. He was recruited by the race car owner because of his work ethic. He just graduated from college in December with a degree in mechanical engineering technology, has his resume out there and is waiting to hear back. In the meantime, he is working full-time in construction and part-time for a company that builds race car engines. I know I may be accused of being partial because he’s my son, but he is a good worker, loyal, dedicated, motivated, and engaged in whatever he is doing.

  • vilanod

Good article and amazing video. Quite the wake up call to how some people will react as things deteriorate.

As for the counsel you received to leave family values and religion out of the conversation, I disagree. You are a person with a worldview and at this point in time you have the right of free speech.

Consider for a moment the amish, they dont have to DO anything to get prepared. They never departed from self-sufficiency. We could all learn something from the way they have held together their family values and religious identity. They were not assimlated or dummed down, they stood firm in their convictions and very possibly the wisdom of their choices is about to become very evident. (for the record, I am not amish nor affiliated with them in any way, but I envy their self-reliant community model with shared values and hope to emulate it before the collapse.

  • sharonsj

This country is not falling apart because religion and the Ten Commandments are not in public places. If you want prayer in the schools, I want to know to whom are we praying, your god or mine? If we pray to your god, then we have to pray to everyone’s god, and you’ll waste half the school day on nonsense. If you want to pray, go to a religious institution or walk outside the door.

This country is falling apart because Congress has passed bad policy for 30 years and few Americans took time out from watching American Idol to notice. Now that everything is falling apart, you can’t find a job, you are going broke, you may lose your house, you can’t pay the doctor bills, you can’t pay the credit card bills–we are waking up.

As for people going postal when they are desperate, you’ll be seeing lots more of that.

  • wg

I also have a son that is almost 19 has a 4 month old daughter, senior in High School gets up every morning goes to school then works part 12:30 to 5 and also works on weekends so there are a few hard working white boys out there still my son would rather do a hard days work then sit in a house and play games all day the sad thing is the ones that want to work hard like that they wont give them a chance because of the lazy ones out there have given all the other kids a bad reputation.

  • http://www.urbandumpsterdiver.wordpress.com Annie Oakley

I can definitely see many people having temper tantrums. I see it on a small scale now.

I managed a retail establishment last year that is seasonal. All of the employees that the owner hired that were under 40 I had to fire. The first half were lazy obsessively texting internet surfing junkies or illegal aliens I had to fire. Oh boy did they think I was a bitch, but I got the job done, on time and under budget.

The 2 best employees I had was a 40 year old white man and a 65 year old Columbia woman. The man was a class A employee. He made slightly over minimum wage but he was grateful to have a job. Worked anytime I asked him. If I were to call him, he’d be on the next bus to show up for work. Wanted to work, needed to work. Stellar employee. Anytime I get a call in regard to a reference to him, I gave him high accolades.

The Columbian woman, same thing. Showed up on time, dressed professional, spoke professionally on the phone and interact with the customers like a class act.

The Nintendo generation (boy that’s a good one) is full of lazy, obese, low IQ brain dead people. There are few good young people out there, but they are far and few between. When I go to a retail store, I purposely try to pick a register that has a baby boomer working it. If I happen to get a younger man/woman, it’s a joke. They rarely make eye contact and mumble intelligible. I leave the register and don’t even know what they said.

Just to screw with them sometimes I mumble something stupid like I’m being beamed up to Mars after I leave here to see if they’re really paying attention.

The entitlement mentality is the worst. All of these kids want a $100K job or something close. Those days are over unless you get a cushy government job. I’ve been in and out of work for the last 3 years. It’s been rough for me. I’ve worked minimum wage jobs, scavenged for cans and bottles to sell for money, held garage sales, etc…to put food on the table. Many people would think they’re too good to do what I do.

  • Mark

It all stems from overpopulation. As the population grows, humans turn more and more introverted towards each other and actually believe other humans are a threat. Governments, churches, corporations all know that overpopulation creates chaos which in turn makes it easier to control the masses. Why do you think our borders are left wide open? Its to pit young verses old, men vs men, woman vs woman. Lower population and this stupid competition that we are forced to endure day in and day out will end. Don’t, and what is today a basic office fit will soon turn into an office massacre.

  • mojnun

Hate to spoil the party, but I’m not so sure this is an American–at least no one in the office seems to be speaking English. See and hear the cellphone video, taken from another angle:

  • http://www.yieldpig.blogspot.com yieldpig

While a lot of this is true. We can only blame ourselves. Religion can give us faith and comfort, but it won’t deliver us. Only we can. We used to be a society that rewarded innovation and creativity. Now, obedience and conformity are what everyone wants. Sad.

I really dont care what country this guy is from, I would have beat him with that copy machine until he didnt move. Im suprised the guys took so long to take this guy out. I wish I was there.

what about the girl who he threw the monitor into her face? i hope her man beat him good for that.

  • Divinatio

While I certainly have been advising my friends and peeps to prepare for the worst, somehow, America continually seems to beat the odds and makes the idiot with with the “end is near” sign on the corner seem like a complete loon. Will it always work? I don’t know. I have been studying macroeconomic theory and don’t see how any of what is occurring fiscally can be solved without major upheaval and change (and not good change, at least not at first).

You all tell me, how can we be so sure this time America won’t beat the odds. Heck, even the Saints won the Superbowl. Isn’t that really the American dream? To be able to beat the odds to secure a high quality of life?

  • http://www.getmoneyenergy.com MoneyEnergy

Still has a high standard of living? For whom? Those making 80k+, maybe. Compare the U.S. infrastructure with Asia and even many EU countries – the U.S. is laughably not “high standard” there at all.

  • Concerned Reader

I just finished reading this article and I agree with it one-hunded percent. It is truly scary at how petulent our society has become in the last couple of generations. I am 21-years-old(yes, the nintendo generation) and I truely see that unless the majority of people find a way to change themselves for the better, we are heading for turbulent times. As the article says, people lose control under stressfull conditions and they take it out on others and I have seen it countless times.A Truely scary article!

Let us analyze what exactly is the root cause. First, the last couple of generations, people between the agaes of 1 and 50-years-old, have had it so easy due to the abundance that our society has generated in the last fifty years has turned them into sel-absorbed and serving, mean, egotistical maniacs that will do anything, including force against others, to gain what they want. Secondly, our police forces have been formatted to generate money for the prison-industrial-complex, they let crimes slide or go on(unless you are not a criminal). This has created a sense of invulnerability among the citizens, one which causes people to scoff at the law and ultimately believe that they can do what they want and get away with it.

As stated above about the last couple of generations, amny people on here might be affended at the ages that I pointed out, so what. I worked in Krogers for nearly a year and watched grown men and women(customers of various ages) get mad and throw tantrum over little nit-picking stuff(their kids were more level headed than they were). It did not help that most of my co-workers, who were middle aged, were very self-serving even though they worked hard.

However, my generation, the millenials or generation Y, will probably prove to be the pinnacle of all that is stated in the article.

  • Harvey Paul

You are so wrong it’s FUNNY! From your entire rant, I can see that you have NO faith in any of your fellow humans, implying of course that you are somehow better than they are. In one small article you have managed to put down anyone and everyone across the generations. Very pathetic attempt to climb the social food chain on the backs of others. Personally, I would NEVER want to be in a lifeboat with you.

  • Concerned Reader

Every one is entitled to their opinion. The one thing that I will acknowledge that I did wrong in the response was that I did not state that every one is not like what is portrayed in the article. There are contless acts of altruism conducted all the time. People are capable of both good and bad.

Judging from your response, I must have struck pretty close to home for you to reply the way you did. However, regardless of how you feel, I feel like I spoke the truth, and no it is not because I believe myself to be superior than any one else.

In your response you say, “I can see that you have NO faith in any of your fellow humans.” I have much faith in people. As stated above, people are capable of all kinds of good and bad things. I am simply responding to the thesis of this article based on opions that I have gained through experiences.

P.S. From what I have seen from your response, I would not let you in my life boat, nor would I want to be welcomed in one with you either.

Why is CA. going down the tubes?

  • http://www.indianaonlineinsurance.com LTC

I think the healthy people will be able to cope with a depression provided they return to multi-generational family units and have an ability to become more self-sustaining. The unhealthy however will see a return to an age equivalent to pre modern era. The scary thing is, I don’t really see how the country will rebound as we are being surpassed and possibly made irrelevant by so many up and coming countries.
