Today, millions of Americans say that they believe that the United States is on the verge of a major economic collapse and will soon be entering another Great Depression. But only a small percentage of those same people are prepared for that to happen. The sad truth is that the vast majority of Americans would last little more than a month on what they have stored up in their homes. Most of us are so used to running out to the supermarket or to Wal-Mart for whatever we need that we never even stop to consider what would happen if suddenly we were not able to do that. Already the U.S. economy is starting to stumble about like a drunken frat boy. All it would take for the entire U.S. to resemble New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina would be for a major war, a terror attack, a deadly pandemic or a massive natural disaster to strike at just the right time and push the teetering U.S. economy over the edge. So just how would you survive if you suddenly could not rely on the huge international corporate giants to feed, clothe and supply you and your family? Do you have a plan?
Unless you already live in a cave or you are a complete and total mindless follower of the establishment media, you should be able to see very clearly that our society is more vulnerable now than it ever has been. This year there have been an unprecedented number of large earthquakes around the world and volcanoes all over the globe are awakening. You can just take a look at what has happened in Haiti and in Iceland to see how devastating a natural disaster can be. Not only that, but we have a world that is full of lunatics in positions of power, and if one of them decides to set off a nuclear, chemical or biological weapon in a major city it could paralyze an entire region. War could erupt in the Middle East at literally any moment, and if it does the price of oil will double or triple (at least) and there is the possibility that much of the entire world could be drawn into the conflict. Scientists tell us that a massive high-altitude EMP (electromagnetic pulse) blast could send large portions of the United States back to the stone age in an instant. In addition, there is the constant threat that the outbreak of a major viral pandemic (such as what happened with the 1918 Spanish Flu) could kill tens of millions of people around the globe and paralyze the economies of the world.
But even without all of that, the truth is that the U.S. economy is going to collapse. So just think of what will happen if one (or more) of those things does happen on top of all the economic problems that we are having.
Are you prepared?
The following is a list of 20 things you and your family will need to survive when the economy totally collapses and the next Great Depression begins....
#1) Storable Food
Food is going to instantly become one of the most valuable commodities in existence in the event of an economic collapse. If you do not have food you are not going to survive. Most American families could not last much longer than a month on what they have in their house right now. So what about you? If disaster struck right now, how long could you survive on what you have? The truth is that we all need to start storing up food. If you and your family run out of food, you will suddenly find yourselves competing with the hordes of hungry people who are looting the stores and roaming the streets looking for something to eat.
Of course you can grow your own food, but that is going to take time. So you need to have enough food stored up until the food that you plant has time to grow. But if you have not stored up any seeds you might as well forget it. When the economy totally collapses, the remaining seeds will disappear very quickly. So if you think that you are going to need seeds, now is the time to get them.
#2) Clean Water
Most people can survive for a number of weeks without food, but without water you will die in just a few days. So where would you get water if the water suddenly stopped flowing out of your taps? Do you have a plan? Is there an abundant supply of clean water near your home? Would you be able to boil water if you need to?
Besides storing water and figuring out how you are going to gather water if society breaks down, another thing to consider is water purification tablets. The water you are able to gather during a time of crisis may not be suitable for drinking. So you may find that water purification tablets come in very, very handy.
#3) Shelter
You can't sleep on the streets, can you? Well, some people will be able to get by living on the streets, but the vast majority of us will need some form of shelter to survive for long. So what would you do if you and your family lost your home or suddenly were forced from your home? Where would you go?
The best thing to do is to come up with several plans. Do you have relatives that you can bunk with in case of emergency? Do you own a tent and sleeping bags if you had to rough it? If one day everything hits the fan and you and your family have to "bug out" somewhere, where would that be? You need to have a plan.
#4) Warm Clothing
If you plan to survive for long in a nightmare economic situation, you are probably going to need some warm, functional clothing. If you live in a cold climate, this is going to mean storing up plenty of blankets and cold weather clothes. If you live in an area where it rains a lot, you will need to be sure to store up some rain gear. If you think you may have to survive outdoors in an emergency situation, make sure that you and your family have something warm to put on your heads. Someday after the economy has collapsed and people are scrambling to survive, a lot of folks are going to end up freezing to death. In fact, in the coldest areas it is actually possible to freeze to death in your own home. Don't let that happen to you.
#5) An Axe
Staying along the theme of staying warm, you may want to consider investing in a good axe. In the event of a major emergency, gathering firewood will be a priority. Without a good tool to cut the wood with that will be much more difficult.
#6) Lighters Or Matches
You will also want something to start a fire with. If you can start a fire, you can cook food, you can boil water and you can stay warm. So in a true emergency situation, how do you plan to start a fire? By rubbing sticks together? Now is the time to put away a supply of lighters or matches so that you will be prepared when you really need them.
In addition, you may want to consider storing up a good supply of candles. Candles come in quite handy whenever the electricity goes out, and in the event of a long-term economic nightmare we will all see why our forefathers relied on candles so much.
#7) Hiking Boots Or Comfortable Shoes
When you ask most people to list things necessary for survival, this is not the first or the second thing that comes to mind. But having hiking boots or very comfortable and functional shoes will be absolutely critical. You may very well find yourself in a situation where you and your family must walk everywhere you want to go. So how far do you think you will get in high heels? You will want footwear that you would feel comfortable walking in for hours if necessary. You will also want footwear that will last a long time, because when the economy truly collapses you may not be able to run out to the shoe store and get what you need at that point.
#8) A Flashlight And/Or Lantern
When the power goes off in your home, what is the first thing that you grab? Just think about it. A flashlight or a lantern of course. In a major emergency, a flashlight or a lantern is going to be a necessity - especially if you need to go anywhere at night.
Solar powered or "crank style" flashlights or lanterns will probably be best during a long-term emergency. If you have battery-powered units you will want to begin storing up lots and lots of batteries.
#9) A Radio
If a major crisis does hit the United States, what will you and your family want? Among other things, you will all want to know what in the world is going on. A radio can be an invaluable tool for keeping up with the news.
Once again, solar powered or "crank style" radios will probably work best for the long term. A battery-powered until would work as well - but only for as long as your batteries are able to last.
#10) Communication Equipment
When things really hit the fan you are going to want to communicate with your family and friends. You will also want to be able to contact an ambulance or law enforcement if necessary. Having an emergency cell phone is great, but it may or may not work during a time of crisis. The Internet also may or may not be available. Be sure to have a plan (whether it be high-tech or low-tech) for staying in communication with others during a major emergency.
#11) A Swiss Army Knife
If you have ever owned a Swiss Army knife you probably already know how incredibly handy they can be. It can be a very valuable and versatile tool. In a true survival situation, a Swiss Army knife can literally do dozens of different things for you. Make sure that you have at least one stored up for emergencies.
#12) Personal Hygiene Items
While these may not be absolute "essentials", the truth is that life will get very unpleasant very quickly without them. For example, what would you do without toilet paper? Just think about it. Imagine that you just finished your last roll of toilet paper and now you can't get any more. What would you do?
The truth is that soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, toilet paper and other hygiene products are things that we completely take for granted in society today. So what would happen if we could not go out and buy them any longer?
#13) A First Aid Kit And Other Medical Supplies
One a more serious note, you may not be able to access a hospital or a doctor during a major crisis. In your survival supplies, be absolutely certain that you have a good first aid kit and any other medical supplies that you think you may need.
#14) Extra Gasoline
There may come a day when gasoline is rationed or is simply not available at all. If that happens, how will you get around? Be certain to have some extra gasoline stored away just in case you find yourself really needing to get somewhere someday.
#15) A Sewing Kit
If you were not able to run out and buy new clothes for you and your family, what would you do? Well, you would want to repair the clothes that you have and make them last as long as possible. Without a good sewing kit that will be very difficult to do.
#16) Self-Defense Equipment
Whether it is pepper spray to fend off wild animals or something more "robust" to fend off wild humans, millions of Americans will one day be thankful that they have something to defend themselves with.
#17) A Compass
In the event of a major emergency, you and your family may find yourselves having to be on the move. If you are in a wilderness area, it will be very hard to tell what direction you are heading without a compass. It is always a good idea to have at least one compass stored up.
#18) A Hiking Backpack
If you and your family suddenly have to "bug out", what will you carry all of your survival supplies in? Having a good hiking backpack or "survival bag" for everyone in your family is extremely important. If something happened in the city where you live and you suddenly had to "go", what would you put your most important stuff in? How would you carry it all if you had to travel by foot? These are very important things to think about.
#19) A Community
During a long-term crisis, it is those who are willing to work together that will have the best chance of making it. Whether it is your family, your friends, a church or a local group of people that you know, make sure that you have some people that you can rely on and work together with in the event that everything hits the fan. Loners are going to have a really hard time of surviving for long.
#20) A Backup Plan
Lastly, it is always, always, always important to have a backup plan for everything.
If someone comes in and steals all the food that you have stored up, what are you going to do?
If travel is restricted and your can't get to your "bug out" location immediately do you have a Plan B?
If you have built your house into an impregnable survival fortress but circumstances force you to leave do you have an alternate plan?
The truth is that crisis situations rarely unfold just as we envision. It is important to be flexible and to be ready with backup plans when disaster strikes.
You don't want to end up like the folks in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. You don't want to have to rely on the government to take care of you if something really bad happens.
Right now the U.S. strategic grain reserve contains only enough wheat to make half a loaf of bread for each of the approximately 300 million people in the United States.
How long do you think that is going to last?
Now is the time to get ready.
Now is the time to prepare.
The United States economy is going to collapse and incredibly hard times are coming.
Will you be able to survive when it happens?
As we can all see, their is an established pattern of decline. History proves that all empires fail. Is the western Empire that we all live failing? YES! What type or group of individuals have weathered storms like this with the least impact? Typical rural family farmers are the best equipped for success. Learn, practice and remember a community is better then an individual when it comes to survival!
If something were to happen, and the Economy were to collapse, or something even worse, you WOULD need to be prepared. Such as storing up water and sterilizing it. Make everthing you get last longer than it would if you could just run to your local Supermarket. Life wouldn’t be easy if something were to happen to the economy. All the essentials were told of up above. Now, for a Community, your family would be the best one. At least 4 people could survive. my guess would be up to about 8. Enough where you could survive, but not so many that supplies go down like there’s no tomorrow.

Your comment on all different denominations: Most are for profit, and as far as Christians, most are not really what they claim to be. The difference is that the Bible that speaks of Jesus the savior, who came to give his life for mans sin is without fault. It’s predictions are always correct, the history is proven, and the prophecies within have almost all been fulfilled. As for a good knife, I agree with J.E. Chapman.. a swiss army knife may be good for cutting small twigs and string, but to cut larger items, a more robust knife or axe would be better. For me, I prefer the kukri, since it is designed to chop wood as well as to chop off body parts if necessary. Very sturdy and works as well as a good hatchet. In fact it is more like a cross between a machate and a hatchet.

This article highlights a lot of essential things that the mass populace does not take into consideration.A few years ago when I first became aware of the concept of something like this happening, I was horrified. Today, I am hopeful, we have over 7 billion people on the planet, that number has more than doubled since 1960, more than any period ever in human history. The idea that we can just keep trucking along oblivious to the cliff ahead is stupid and ignorant at best.
After the initial collapse, based on common sense, I am by no means an expert… The first stage will be complete and total chaos. People will be asking themselves, how am I going to feed myself.. many will stupidly get themselves killed, by not thinking long-term. The ones that have others relying on them for survival, like those with a family, will likely be more dangerous. For example, before I had my daughter, I embraced a certain selfish protective attitude. Once I had my daughter, everything changed, I would gladly put myself in harms way to protect her well-being, I know I would go to extreme lengths to ensure her safety and well-being. I know that many people will be like this, making them dangerous.
After the initial collapse, I project that about 6 weeks afterwards, things will begin to become a little more stable, Once those with stored food supplies run out (roughly 3-6 weeks) many more people will die off if they have no back up plan, waiting for a failed government to emerge and save the day.
Gangs will band together, and control sections of cities, towns, or any major metropolitan area. So seeking refuge with others can quickly become dangerous. Staying in seclusion for a while is the best way to avoid any possible confrontation where you could be killed for a bottle of water, boots, a knife, and a can of corn. Learning to be self- sufficiant, and sadly making the hard choices on who NOT to let into your retreat. This can mean turning away friends, family, because if they have nothing to offer aside from companionship, you may end up signing your own death warrant by allowing them into your limited supplies of survival materials.
WHEN this time comes, every human emotion will certainly be tested, as we lose loved ones, and do things we never thought possible.
“you can give a man a fish, and feed him for a day, or teach a man to fish, and feed him for a lifetime” You will only go so far on a few hundred gallons of stored water and canned goods. Learning how to safely purify the water in the long run, either by building a filtration system or boiling it, will you be able to outlive the ‘short-term’ thinkers. Stocking up on perishable items is not going help you survive the hardship of a collapse, but only delay it.
Learn as many skills about survival as possible, start now, pick and choose key individuals that you know you can rely on in this kind of situation. Protect yourself, your family unit, then your fellow neighbor if you want to keep this species alive.
Personally, I dont see this as a horrible thing for this planet. It’s clear that the human race has exploited every possible avenue in order to kill this planet. We are a plague on this earth, and this is not only a wakeup call to those that survive, but a chance to have a real second chance in our lifetime. I don’t like the idea of billions of people dying, but I do view it as a necessity in order to help ensure the long-term survival of our species. This planet was in no way shape or form able to support the survival of 7 billion people long term. Not even half of that. In all honesty. I think about a tenth of our current population would be a decent number to help us live long term.
Instead of thinking of the contradictory nature of what I am saying. Just ask yourselves if you have a plot of land, that can sustain 100 cows, they eat the grass, it grows back, all is fine. Now throw in 1000 cows… before you know it, they are eating everything faster than they can regrow it, defacating on everything else, creating a terrible stench… is it humane to keep all 1000 cows in that living situation? of course not, just like its not humane to keep all 7 billion people living on Earth like this. It’s not logical… weve exhausted our resources, its a matter of time before everything catches up with us… This collapse WILL happen. There is no logical arguement that says it wont.
The oil supplies of Planet Earth follow a bell-curve and coincide with human population… Oil makes life easier, which leads to babymaking. Overpopulation soon follows and exacerbates the mega-consumerism that rapes the earth and encourages wars for resources and makes the 1% a rich dictatorial oligarchy.
The industrial revolution (oil use up, population up) leaves us at a point [Peak Oil]where we’re going to run out in 50-60 years… the drop in that oil bell-curve will lead to a sad yet logical drop in human population, and will stay down as people refuse to overbreed. Nobody wants mouths to feed during a depression so many will learn how to actually use a condom lol. But when oil goes away, so does the highly energy-dependent (pesticides and fertilizers are both oil and natural-gas based; and 1000-mile caesar salads will be so impossible) food production! We will end up with the natural carrying capacity of the earth… 2 billion tops. Maybe 500,000 at the worst.

Learn to be o.k. at a 3rd world ghetto level and be happy and nothing can touch you. Grow your own food and be a vegetarian. Be frugal/DIY and punk rock about it. Watch Mad Max 1 and 2 and get a shotgun lol. Simple. and free.

I am from Alaska and live in the state of South Carolina. I am truely aware about survival and with plenty of self research lately I have realized several more things. I have stocked up on supplies ever since I was able to afford to since moving to SC. After doing many years of research I realize that What I have saved for my wife and neighbors to serve if they needed help is not nearly close to the supplies that I have in store. The protection, ammunition, food and water althouth enough for the immediate will cripple us in the end. To further exlain that the with has some older self relient children on the government or Mommy or just plain stupid will exhaust the survivial provisions somewhat quick. They hang around less desriable people inorder to fit into society and they the kids would not give it a secounf thought to tell the make beleives to move in so we can help them servive. People the point is think out of the box…..Most family do not think but only for themselves and not parent or stepfather. Overstocking is a goood things and be prepared to protect ones self survival.
Why does everyone have to bring in religion. Regardless of what the Bible says….look around…It doesnt matter who says what look at the hard facts in front of you.

I’m pretty close to being ready.I’ve been homeless a couple of times,so that helps.I ain’t sceared about such a thing happening and i will not deny ChristIf the house i’m staying in doesn’t fall down i should have plenty of water and i have a solar furnace on it.I will help the drug attic owners that own the house if they need it.The steal my money and anything else they want when they want it but i will still help them.I still need to buy a case of hemp seed oil for health purposes.I also need to get about 5 pounds of pot to make cannabis oil to treat different illness’s for people i come accrosed that are ill.I can cure cancers with the cannabis oil because there will be no treatments in hospitals thats for sure.I cured my arthritis and fibromyalgia with the stuff so i know it works.God didn’t put it here to keep the cops busy putting people in jail for using it.I have a good machettie.Thank you for reminding me about the purifacation pills.I have a backpack and lots of toilet paper and darn good solar flashlight i have.I always buy 2 or 3 more cans of food when i go to the store.I don’t eat alot of beef,so i won’t miss it,but there are a lot of critters running around that can be eaten anyway.

I read this blog to get info on how 2 prepare for an extended emergency. I live in the tornado belt and the 72 hr (3 day)prep is standard in my household. There was some good advice in the blog but some of the comments left a lot to be desired. Wheather the disaster is caused by natural, manmade, economic, political or religious circumstances, let everyone add extra according to their belief system and not use this as a soap box for their favorite hobby horse. Use it to offer suggestions how to live through the disaster. You can add weapons and books to your kits as you see fit. My great-grand parents survived with preperation, and while their preperation included a hunting rifle and a bible, feel free to choose your own stand.
This list is nice but short sighted. All this stuff will belong to the men in gangs with guns who will simply kill to take all. You want to survive: become a police man–u get a gun and a tight gang immediately, radios and organization, too.
Prepare to get and be deeply primative for the rest of your short lives.
EVEN IF You did ALL 20 things Recommended , You might NOT Survive at all for even a very short period of time ; in the event of Catistrophic Events , UNKNOWN VARIABLES/UNACCOUNTED FOR POSSIBLITIES CAN/MIGHT circumvent the BEST LAID PLANS ; BUT , haveing a PLAN is BETTER than “NOT” haveing a PLAN .

God loves us but will not spare any of us–he is warning us NOW! Yes, I want to survive, but I’d rather go to Heaven. Remember too, the Lord will remove all people who have obeyed His Truth. Look back in history after you read the book of Acts in the Bible. A lot of people, like now, offer “easy believing” and a candy coated gospel that was NOTHING like what Jesus preached or the apostles . Jesus said if we receivedHis Sporit, we could be changed and if we didn’t have that Spirit, we were none of His. I know firsthand that God can change ANYONE if they are willing!
Jesus is coming to get those people that are ready and then it is ALL going to come upon the earth and no one will be laughing.

You forget one thing. God does not give us the spirit of fear. Fear ,doubt comes from the lower power. He has you where he wants you. All that is happening can not be averted but trust in the Lord is what we need.

Dont forget to bring knowledge! By this i mean books on sustained wilderness survival and herbal medicine relevant to your part of the world. Remember that at some point your “modern” supplies will run out and you will have to sustain yourself through knowledge of things such as hunting, fishing, gathering edible plants, medicine etc.
I see things on homesteading sites sometimes that I think are big mistakes unless you live so far out no one can see you. Even then, you might not be safe if someone discovers your road or driveway. Don’t get solar panels on your roof. You’re just asking for people to invade if they see there’s electricity. Wind power too. It isn’t soft and cozy, but you’re best bet is to at least appear “uncomfortable”. That means no more than candles and flashlights. On the other hand, I think if you’re house appears completely dark it may be an invitation to people hoping its unoccupied. Keep your gardens as out of sight as possible. You don’t want them visible from roads or neighbors if it is avoidable. In the event that martial law is declared they can come in and take any food or water that they consider excess. Dig a pit, place stores inside, and disguise it if martial law is declared. As far as lacking toilet paper, its simple. You wipe your arse with a leaf that’s what you do! Lol
Oh…and I think it might be better to be a little dirty. Again, you don’t want people to realize that you have comforts.
Exactly what harm can come from being prepared? Do like the Mormons do and store your goods. Once your stores are complete rotate your food and resupply what you need putting items at the end of the line.

my partner is looking forward to the collapse of our system and is hopeful that after a period of hardship we will all come together.
On the other hand i am terrified. for one, I live in a rough area where you are robbed for drug money. I live in the UK. I am scared because I know we will be targeted and probably killed. my daughter is pregnant, thats a worry in case she goes into labour and theres no help.
Also my whole family live on the same street as me. they laugh at all this talk and call me an extremist. could I really sit back and watch them die? they will beg for help. there are close to 20 people in my family. I couldnt possibly help them all./ also I already have anxiety and stress over every day life, imagine me, ******, I am dreading this so much.
