31 Percent Of All Food In America Is Wasted – And Why That Is About To End

Burger And Fries - Photo by Ewan MunroAccording to a stunning new report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, nearly a third of all food produced in the United States gets wasted.  We are probably the most wasteful society in the history of the planet, and we are also one of the most gluttonous.  More than 35 percent of all Americans are considered to be officially "obese" by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  Unfortunately, this era of gluttony and taking food for granted will soon be coming to an end.  Thanks to crippling drought in key growing areas and other extremely bizarre weather patterns, a massive food crisis is beginning to emerge all over the planet.  If you don't think that this is going to affect you, then you simply are not paying attention.  Approximately half of all produce grown in the United States comes from the state of California, and right now California is suffering through the worst stretch of drought on record.  Food prices are going to start soaring, and that is going to affect the household budget of every family in America.

Needless to say, a time is coming when Americans will not waste food so recklessly.  But for the moment, we still have a tremendous amount of disrespect for the value of food.  According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, we waste a staggering 133 billion pounds of food each year...

Nearly a third of the 430 billion pounds of food produced for Americans to eat is wasted, a potential catastrophe for landfills and a wake-up call to officials scrambling to feed the hungry, according to a stunning new report from the Department of Agriculture.

The just-issued report revealed that in 2010, 31 percent, or 133 billion pounds, of food produced for Americans to eat was wasted, either molded or improperly cooked, suffered “natural shrinkage” due to moisture loss, or because people became disinterested in what they purchased.

Not that we need to stuff any more food into our mouths.  As I mentioned above, we have an epidemic of obesity in this nation.  In fact, the CDC says that 35 percent of the entire population is "obese"...

Meanwhile, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than one-third of US adults (35.7 percent) are obese, which is perhaps the best argument that Americans can offset a large part of the food waste problem by simply eating less. The estimated annual medical cost of obesity in the US was $147 billion in 2008; the costs of providing medical assistance for individuals who are obese were $1,429 higher than those of normal weight, thereby placing an enormous strain on healthcare costs.

Since we are such gluttons and we are so incredibly wasteful, we should have plenty of food to share with those in need, right?

Unfortunately, we are also extremely greedy and greatly lacking in compassion.

As I have written about previously, feeding the homeless has been banned in cities all over the nation, and other cities have passed regulations that greatly discourage the feeding of the homeless...

Feeding the homeless is about to get harder as a new policy is set to begin this Saturday, Feb. 15, in Columbia, SC. Charities and non-profits will be required to pay a fee and obtain a permit 15 days in advance in order to feed the homeless in parks.

One impacted charity that was interviewed by the Free Times, Food Not Bombs, has been serving food to the homeless in Finlay Park every Sunday for 12 years. The group’s organizer, Judith Turnipseed, noted that the group has an impeccable track record and always tidies up after the meal. But with the new crackdown, Food Not Bombs will have to pay at least $120 per week for the right to feed the homeless.

Since the Columbia City Council approved its exile plan in August, the city has been trying to herd its homeless people to a shelter on the outskirts of town and keep them away from downtown. If charities continue to provide food in downtown parks, the thinking goes, it will allow homeless people to continue to live downtown, rather than being forced to leave.

What is wrong with us?

While we stuff our faces with more french fries and chicken wings, we have an appalling lack of compassion for those that are not able to take care of themselves.

Perhaps we deserve what is coming.

The horrible drought that never seems to end is rapidly turning much of the western half of the country into a barren wasteland.

If a miracle does not happen, the upcoming growing season is going to be absolutely disastrous.  As I have written about previously, California farmers have already decided to allow half a million acres of farmland to sit idle this year because of the extremely dry conditions.

And it certainly does not help that the government has decided to cut off water supplies to many of the farmers.  The following is an excerpt from a recent article by Holly Deyo...

Government has lost its mind. It is no more evident than their decision last week to cut off water to America's food basket. Squeezed by the worst-ever drought in the state's history, California is dying of thirst. Crushing news was delivered to farmer's that no water would be coming from the Federal government. This dreaded decision was compounded by the Sierra Mountains getting just 25% of normal snowpack. There is no water to replenish already dangerously low reservoirs, so no water for farmers.

Needless to say, there are a lot of farmers that are going to be absolutely crippled by this.  The following is from Fox News...

A federal agency's recent announcement that the California’s Central Valley will get zero percent water allocation this year was devastating for farmers already dealing with the worst drought seen in decades.

One of the world's most productive agricultural regions, the enormous valley is reeling after the driest year in more than a century. But last week, the Department of Interior's Bureau of Reclamation, which supplies water to a third of the irrigated farmland in California through a 500-mile network of canals and tunnel, said it won’t be able to deliver any of the water sought by farmers.

“It goes beyond devastation, you're going to see farms that have been in business 30 and 40 years, they do not have any water, they are out of business,” said Dennis Falaschi, general manager of the Panoche Water District.

If California produces much less food than it normally does, that means that food prices are going to start skyrocketing.  Here is more from Holly Deyo...

As one Millennium-Ark reader pointed out in an email last week, after the jump in beef prices, people will look to chicken, pork, fish and turkey. Chicken is already up though not as much as beef.  This will, in turn, drive up their costs and affect availability of these other meats. Keep in mind that California also produces all of these proteins plus lamb. Then consider this: Ag Specialists Warn of Higher Wheat Prices Due to Drought. It’s not just beef, weather is clobbering food from all angles.

And please keep in mind that the total size of the U.S. cattle herd has already been shrinking for seven years in a row, and that it is now the smallest that it has been since 1951.

But back in 1951, the size of the U.S. population was less than half of what it is today.

Let us certainly hope and pray that the drought in California ends soon and that things get back to normal.

But I wouldn't count on that.

According to National Geographic, the scientific experts that have studied these things tell us that it has been quite common throughout history for that region of North America to suffer through extended droughts that last for a decade or more.

One drought even lasted for about 200 years.

So the current drought in California might end next year.

Or it might last for the rest of our lifetimes.

We simply do not know.

But what does seem clear is that the days of taking our food for granted will soon be coming to an end.

    This is why I encourage people to prep. It may not be a hurricane, or an earthquake, or even an EMP. It may just be you can no longer afford the food you need. Also remember as the dollar loses value, imported food will also go way up. At the rate things are going, meat and certain other foods, may only be for the rich.

    I’m just the opposite. I refuse to throw food away. My reasoning is that one day when the SHTF I will hate the day I threw something away I shouldn’t have. If anything I tend to donate food to someone who needs it rather than throw it away.

    It would also be prudent to clip the wings of the EPA as they thrive on destroying anything that might boost the economy. Growing corn for ethanol is another stupid idea which should be stopped. Obama couldn’t run a hot dog stand, never mind the economy and is completely oblivious to the destruction in his wake. California is also its own worst enemy with their thousands of rules and regulations, as well as the inability to see beyond the next election. Perhaps some hard times will wake up the electorate, but I doubt it. No shortage of Nancy Pelosi type valley girls and Joe Biden’s that are power hungry and dumb as a stick. To survive we need real people, and they are hard to find in the political arena.

      Add the delta smelt to the list of EPA boondoggles. Part of this mess in California is due to a man made drought over the delta smelt. (A tiny fish)

    That looks like a might tasty burger and fries. On a more serious note I used to be bad about not eating leftovers. Now I make a point to eat all leftovers. The money saved by not buying extra food really adds up. Also, it saves landfill space by not having to throw away food that has spoiled.

      I have taken to really utilizing my freezer. Very much helps keep food cooked or uncooked from going bad too fast.

    Food isn’t wasted at my house. If the people don’t eat it, then the dogs, ducks or chickens, horses or livestock will. Also, bread products can be frozen and defrosted and warmed in the oven when it’s time to use them. People actually can do most of their cooking for the month, freeze the food and then have homemade prepared food if dinner times are busy. This is another strategy for using and eating all that you have, while keeping your food fresh.

      We treat our chickens to bread that for one reason or another has started to mold. It’s fun to watch them chuck a dinner roll around like a football.

        my brother does this. It was amazing how good the chickens ate at the last cookout. The smaller kids dropped things and the chickens were right there.

    Michael-Have you ever been to a all you can eat place like Golden Corral? The amount of waste I saw when I ate there back in 2003 was incredible. I heard a stat that 20% of coffee is wasted.

      We rarely go to buffets to eat, but when we do, I tell our six year old son that what he puts on his plate he has to eat. I do the same. It really forces you to choose wisely and not go overboard.

      Meanwhile, I’ll pass people with heaped up food and later see half of it getting cleared off the table and dumped in the bussers bin.

      Some people have no shame and think nothing of looking like greedy gluttons at those places.

      Gary2: I knew a very obese woman here in Philly who used to go to one of those all you can eat Indian buffets. She ate so much that the dude asked her not to come back (guess she really liked tandoori chicken). Yeah, you know someone has an eating problem when they get banned from an all you can eat buffet.

      Speaking of all you can eat (AYCE). There’s a new AYCE mandarin grill place here in town that me and my co-workers go to. We went today and I kid you not, they have new signs on the tables that you can only get one bowl cooked at a time because they’ve been throwing away almost a half ton of wasted food PER MONTH. :-O

        Heh, I went to a sushi place with my sister and her family a couple of years ago, and they had an all you can eat deal that was kind of funny. You ordered all of your sushi at once. If you finished it all, you got the all you can eat price. If you did not finish it all, you had to pay by the roll. My nephew and I were expected to take up the slack when everybody else realized that they ordered more than they should have. It was almost worth it to not finish that last roll.

    Many rude awakenings are headed our way. Food prices have been steadily rising. That will only accelerate. Americans must be force fed to make a change. In this case, the lack of “feeding” might do the trick.

        In the walk-in freezer there were boxes of “cheese”, and the brand was “Pretend.” True story.

    I’ve shared this before, but I’ll mention it again because it’s something that I’d like to see more of. There is a businessman here in the upstate of SC who buys food that is close to or has reached its Best By date and sells it at a deep discount. He now has 5 stores. Most prepackaged food is good for quite some time after its Best By date. Tonight I ate a box of Mediterranean Snacks Lentil Crackers that had a Best By date of 10/11/13. They were fine. I go to the store closest to me a few times per week. And I have found some tremendous bargains there. For example, I have gotten 8 oz. tubs of guacamole (good brands like Wholly Guacamole) for $1, something that would be $3 or $4 in a regular grocery store. I think this is wonderful because this food would otherwise be thrown away.

      Bear in mind a lot of the name brand stores will start to offload or deep-discount stock when it’s within a YEAR of the use-by date. Stores like the one you mention can scoop them up for pennies on the dollar and still sell them cheap. I’m with you. I’ll use them a year past the “use-by” date. Even raw eggs. Okay, maybe not raw eggs.

      We had a great one in Fort Worth, TX called “Town Talk” for anyone who lives in that area, and there are small ones to be found all over the place.

      Wow! I wish I had one of those stores around me. At least I don’t know of any. I hate paying full price for something that has reached its best buy date & sometimes I don’t notice it until I get home. But if its discounted I don’t mind.

      I do know that Super Target sells discounted food items. If you look at their end caps in the grocery section you’ll find discounted food items.

      I have to ask this question even though its really off topic: What is anyone doing buying processed foods that were stripped of all their nutrients and then had salt and/or sugar added back into the mix. If it can sit on the shelf for more than a week, and its not salt, or honey, or an herb, do you really think its not going to lead to a host of chronic illnesses and worse? The processed food industry (one of the largest industries in the USA) is one of the major reasons we’re obese. If it isn’t fresh, stay away from it. The only long shelf life stuff you should be buying is food storage for a time of famine or economic trouble. Your body can live a few years on wheat and stored foods, but it will eventually lead to all sorts of chronic disease.

        These discount stores that I speak of sell refrigerated grocery items, like guacamole, which is very healthy. I have also found quite a few non-refrigerated items that are relatively healthy. For example, I have gotten bags of popcorn (from non-GMO corn). These stores do carry a lot of things that nobody should eat, and I avoid those things.

      We have several stores like that here in CA. I call them the “out of date” store. We also have gleaners. An organization that buys foods from the stores and people pay by the month and pick up whatever they are giving out once a week. The cost is very minimal around 25.00 per month but you get a lot of food.
      I HATE TO SEE PEOPLE THROW FOOD AWAY! BUT as long as we live in a capitalistic society we will have much waste. If it cannot be sold for a profit, instead of giving it to the poor or reducing the price like they use to do, they throw it away, in the garbage.

      A lot of “99 cent” stores have canned goods that are past their “Best By…” dates as well. The food’s just fine. It may not be as fresh as it was the day it came out of the packing plant, but it’s not like it’s inedible.

    Do what we did and get some chickens. They eat almost ALL leftovers, including moldy bread and wilted lettuce, and turn them into delicious eggs and fertilizer for our vegetable garden.

    And yet, growing your own foods is still very restricted and violently discouraged. Didn’t those who did such things get labeled as “terrorists”? Why, yes; we were!

    All dictators and power hungry psychopaths prefer their people starving to force love and obedience. Good thing this won’t last long. The only way the 20th and today’s dictators survived so long was because of the more-free nations feeding them for cheap. Just wait, all levels of government and their crony’s and fanboy’s will do their best to make this situation worse. It’s their pleasure, their religion, and reason for living.

    Will we suffer? Most likely. Will we deserve it? Most definitely. Will we recover? Some will – those that survive it. Will things get better? Eventually.

      I made a comment yesterday about how ruthlessness is the common trait that allows people to climb the pyramid of hierarchical structures, and so society always ends up with psychopaths at the highest position of power. I am sure most people on this site have been accused at one time or another of being a “conspiracy theorist.” I always say I am, in fact, the opposite. Extremely powerful megalomaniacs do not, as a rule, play well with others. Sure, there are instances where truces are called and partnerships entered into by people who despise one-another, but this is not a conspiracy. I have been searching for an analogy to express this idea and I got an email that gave it to me just yesterday: The global ruling elite class acts very much like a swarm of locusts. A locust swarm is cooperative, after a fashion, because they do not attack one another as long as there is still any food source. A locust swarm is orgiastic for any locust and absolutely devastating to everyone and everything that is not a locust. A locust swarm cannot and will not be stopped until all resources are consumed and the swarm starves. This is exactly the behavior of the ruling elite. Would anyone call a swarm of locusts a “conspiracy?”

    Being an aging Gen-X who is old enough to remember the ‘70s, I remember seeing “Soylent Green” as a kid. For years, Charlton Heston’s line “Soylent green is made of people” was a favorite punchline among folks I knew. Well, when I talk to preppers now, we agree that “Soylent Green” ain’t looking so far-fetched anymore. An economic meltdown worse than the Great Depression, World War III, political unrest all over the world, food shortages…..not exactly a combination that makes you optimistic about the future.

    Just last week in Caracas, a gang of thugs on motorcycles robbed a CNN (Corporate News Nonsense) crew blind. Took their cameras and everything. The punch line: people
    who saw what happened swore the thugs were plain-clothes policías. That’s the type of thing that happens when a society breaks down on all levels. To paraphrase Bette Davis: fasten your seatbelts, patriots and preppers….it’s going to be a bumpy night. Y bienvenidos todos al infierno que nos espera.

        K: A Donner Party scenario wouldn’t surprise me. If people are willing to trample others to death on Black Friday in the hope of getting a good deal on a flatscreen TV, I can only imagine how they’ll act after two or three days without eating.

        The thing is that once you realized how many edible plants there are, juicing them can be easy and cheap. Dandelions are typically healthier than spinach (relative to a large number of minerals per serving) and they and other edibles can be dried and used all year in soups and stews.
        It’d be so easy to boost the nutrition of everyone in the country, by just not keeping perfectly manicured lawns and allowing ‘ugly’ weeds/herbs to grow instead.

      Yep. Saw that too. The Harmon’s off 7th near Midvale had the good cuts for $6.39/lbs. Reams off 45th near the 215 ramp has very thin cuts for around $4/lbs.

      This is painful.

      What type of steak and where do you live? In Denver, $6/lb is a fairly good price for sirloin, an excellent price for NY Strip or Rib Eye (although it can still be found occasionally) and an extremely high price for London Broil or Skirt Steak.

      What if they removed the fairways’ grass and replaced it with kales, dandelions and other edible greens. When they mow, they could collect the greens and make juices and soup bases … maybe even something marketed like “Soylent Green” without the people part.

      Multi engine Jet is a hard ticket to get especially with Passenger endorsments> for a long time the military supplied a huge amount of pilots for the civilian market, The last few years the Military pilot supply has remained stable with low turnover and the civilian pilot supply has been dwindling due to pilot ageing and retirement. A student pilot training has a long costly training course so it will be quite a while before they are plentiful if ever.

          A large chunk of the pilot shortage is due to the overreaction and idiotic moves by congress to the Colgan air crash is Buffalo a few years ago. In a crash mostly caused by a captain’s decision to continue into ice, the government remedy is, of course, require 1st officers to have 1500 hours before they can fly for the airlines. Great call. That basically equates to an additional $150,000 training cost to pilot wannabees. My prediction is that eventually the government fix to the pilot shortage (that they have caused), will be to relax rules on foreign pilots coming here to take jobs away from American pilots. And they will use the same line of B.S. they’ve been using to outsource other jobs to imigrants……”We can’t find enough Americans willing to do these jobs”

            Colgan Air had nothing to do with ice. Extreme crew fatigue combined with poor CRM lead to two pilots allowing a Q400 to stall and enter a spin. Incorrect recovery techniques were initiated by the Captain and well…you know the rest.

          Oh really…please enlighten me with what quals your pilots would have in 9-12 months….? Commercial/Multi-IFR? How many hours? Anyone can train and acquire bare-bones requirements… But can they sit in the right seat of an A320? Maybe some but not too many.

      conversely, the more we give (in the right spirit) the more God adds back to us. The more eggs I give away to friends and family, the more eggs my chickens lay, even in sub-zero temps. Example–today was -11 (windchill -24) while most chickens are not laying, I get 95% out of my flock. God is working through my chickens. All our scraps go to them (or the rabbits) plus what we get from the short-dated food store if it is too gone for humans. Give, and it will be given back, is what I take from the lesson.

    I think obesity is another symptom of depression in America. Instead of drinking or taking drugs, some people overeat. Others don’t each much but are obese anyway which makes one wonder if it might have to do with the additives and modifying of our food. Obesity is a symptom of all of the problems in this country.

      You are correct. Another symptom of a very sick society. As our family “runs away” from foods with too many additives, the bill goes up, but we do feel better. Processed foods…another symptom and assault on an already burdened, stressed family unit.

      Concerned: I totally agree. Many Americans self-medicate with food instead of booze, cocaine, heroin, cigarettes or meth. And I think the “fat acceptance” crowd encourages that. I’ve always been a non-smoker, but I find it amusing that some of the same people who try to shame smokers into quitting run around preaching “fat acceptance” and telling us it’s healthy to weigh 300 pounds.

      I think it is absolutely a symptom of depression as well as additives in and modifications of our food, and not only are the additives in the food making us sick they are enhancing our cravings. Isn’t there a chip company’s motto is “Bet you can’t eat just one?” That is by design. Also, research has been done comparing wheat grown today vs that of 100 years ago, and right off the stalk modern wheat has much more starch (carbs) than that from just a century ago. Our bodies aren’t meant to absorb that much starch that quickly.
      As a side note, I got married in Bogota, Columbia in 2011. I have never been a good vegetable eater, but I couldn’t get enough of the vegetables down there. They were just so much richer and heartier than here.

    I remember eating at a Sizzler a few years ago. It was all you can eat shrimp night. This obese lady ate so much that she got stuck in her booth. After the restaurant staff tried unsuccessfully to get her out, the fire department was called to help. They had to break down the table portion of the booth in order to free her. She ate a lot of shrimp

    I saw an interesting video a few months ago. It was with Margaret Sanger. The interview was from the 50s. In it the interviewer told her that there were over a billion acres of land that could be used for agriculture but wasn’t. I can’t remember what her answer was but I don’t think she cared anyways. Reading this article had me wondering is it true that not only is there a drought but is it true that billions of acres of land is dormant?

    I read that the government lowered the California reservoir level prematurely because of some stupid fish that is not even native to the area.
    Im all for saving wildlife and conservation efforts, but at what point do we say screw the stupid non-native fish and place importance back on people?
    PC & liberal ideaology sickness has infiltrated absolutely every portion of our life in the USA. Other countries put people first, we put fish first.

    The reason homeless people are banned from cities is the amount of baggage they come with.
    They are often thieves. We had a homeless shelter close to where I worked. Parking near the center was a guarantee you would get your car broken into. Police everywhere are constantly aware of the situation. A major department store could not keep its doors open because of theft in that area.
    Legitimate customers were often asked for money constantly and it really got embarrassing to walk two blocks and get accosted by these people constantly. SO the city put in licenses to beg. The cost was $25. Police still could not keep up with them.
    The numbers become a hazard to people. Not that they would riot or anything, but anytime you have groups of a couple of hundred all in a small area they are intimidating.
    The irony of California is there is water everywhere but not a drop to drink. The average toilet can go through at least 5-10 gallons of water a day. There is the Paciific Ocean full of water and none of it is useable because of the salts and mineral contents. Washing Machines go through water. Dishwashers also go through a lot of water. That is our modern day lifestyle.
    President F. Roosevelt put them to work. We had a conservation corp that made a lot of parks with flowers and enjoyable things in them. At the time welfare hadn’t come into its own.
    I suggest that we put all these excess unemployed people to work on public projects. Feed them by all means. But make them work for it.
    Same with the handicapped on welfare. Find something to give them back their pride in accomplishing something even if it is something as simple as planting flowers in the park.
    I suggest we start businesses. By that I mean that we get people trained to run a business. After they are trained then give them the welfare money to start the business for at least two-five years. That is what it takes to get a new business profitable.
    I suggest we outlaw zoning against vegetable gardens.
    I am not suggesting vegetable gardens in front yards or eyesores. I am suggesting what you do in your back yard is your business, not the state’s business.
    We have to find a way to utilize the ocean water to end the drought in California. That is going to take innovative engineering. It is not going to come that cheap. But if we want to protect our food supply then we are going to have to do it.
    I maintain that any government agency with complex rules that cannot be readily understood is illegal and unconstitutional. The question is why are our courts allowing these agencies to exist. Any time you get 17,000 regulations to tell you how to enforce a 4,000 word law then something is definitely wrong with how we are enforcing the law.
    The food situation is a repeat performance. It happened in the 30s when numerous farmers were put out of business by the depression.
    We as a people are directly responsible for protecting our food supply with what ever it takes to do so. I think you only have to look as far as Disneyworld in Florida to see how a new way of farming in drought conditions might work. Drip bottles above plants there have produced some fairly good results.
    The basic thing wrong with the homeless situation is that government wants to give them things instead of making them earn things. It is an established fact that the reward for working is often less than what the government will give you if you are down and out. Specifically on Medicare and Medicaid you can get first class benefits. But lord help you if you are working making close to $25,000 a year. They penalize entire groups of people with the rules.

        They are banded from cities all the time. Some are bussed to other cities.
        Fairly sure your place is not an eyesore of any kind. However zoning departments determine where you can place a garden if any place.
        To my way of thinking zoning departments should be illegal.

      Im self employed and work my freakin a$$ off. I work harder than anyone I know, I have friends that constantly tell me they wish they could do what I do and have their own business. My one friend in particular is very smart, but I know it will never happen for him because he will not put in the hours necessary. most people reach a certain comfort level and then they are done. The protestant work ethic died and was buried long ago.

      Of course the government wants to feed the poor. There’s votes in that soup line. Try to open a soup kitchen in any city controlled by the Democrats. My guess is you will be shut down in a month or less. It will be for heath concerns of course, but the real reason is the D’s will fear a loss of votes.

    Here’s what some folks say about clover:

    Lucky you-clovers are actually edible. And they’re found just about everywhere there’s an open grassy area. You can spot them by their distinctive trefoil leaflets. You can eat clovers raw, but they taste better boiled.

    Many different types of clovers are edible, including the red clover, which is easily distinguishable by its rounded purple flower bud and leaves marked with a v-shaped white stripe. Clover flowers generally bloom from April through September, and they can be eaten raw. Clover leaves and stems can also be eaten raw, but they are easier to eat if they’re soaked or boiled. Clovers are a good protein source, and any leftover boiling water can make a nice nutrient-rich tea.

    Clovers are abundant worldwide, and they’re a part of the pea family. They’re often found in pastureland. Choose to eat white, pink, and red flowers instead of brown ones, and digest clover either fresh or dried, not in-between.

    This is a wild edible plant everyone knows. The clover leafs are delicious in salads or juices. Clovers are a valuable survival food, as they are high in protein, widespread, and abundant. They are not easy to digest raw, but this can be easily fixed by juicing them. Dried flower heads and seed pods can also be ground up into a nutritious flour and mixed with other foods. Dried flower heads can also be steeped in hot water for a healthy, tasty tea.

    Clover, Available Around The World

    One of the more surprising sides of clover is that it’s in the pea family, and its blossom is actually a bunch of little pea-like blossoms, called ”wings and keels.” Clover is also a native of Europe and western Asia but has been used as a pasture crop worldwide. And while there are few pasture in the Arctic, clover grows from the top of the earth to the bottom and all around, nearly every location on the rotation. Though well-known as totally edible, from blossom to root, it is not choice “eating wild.” Some call it a survival food, and perhaps rightly so for only the blossoms are truly pleasant to human tastes. The leaves are an acquired or tolerated taste.

    In reference to the blossoms, don’t select brown ones. You want young and fresh whether white or pink or red though white clover is the better tasting of them all. Besides a tea you can pan roast the blossoms until nice and crispy. The leaves are another matter. Young ones are digestible raw in small amounts, half a cup or so. Older leaves should be cooked, but I think you’d have to be hungry to eat them. It is a survival or famine food.

    While it may not be that good in taste, clover can be good for you. It is high in protein, has beta carotene, vitamin C, most of the B vitamins, biotin, choline, inositol, and bioflavonoids. Clover does come with three words of warning, however: One is that quite a few people are allergic to it and don’t know it, so go easy at first until you know one way or the other. Secondly, NEVER …. did you see that word? NEVER ferment and eat any part of it. You want your clover either completely fresh or completely dried, Never in between.

    I wonder how many gazillion gallons of water have been wasted on keeping yards green. That is the biggest waste ever. What good is a front yard of green grass? Unless you have goats, I’d say not much. My brother in law who was in the business said in reality, grass is healthier if you let it die in the summer months anyway, so what good is there in all the water being used for watering private yards?

    My thoughts about feeding the homeless: Wrap the food up and put “Happy Birthday” on it and don’t give it as a meal, give it as a birthday present. It’s not illegal to hive out birthday presents, right?

    Last year there was a series of articles about the British starting a campaign to get people to eat uglier food, since they reportedly wasted about 50% of the food *grown* including leaving ‘less beautiful’ food in the fields or on the trees to rot since it wasn’t pretty enough to get people to eat.
    Hence, our family has juicers. A partially eaten kale leaf full of bug holes doesn’t look good in a salad, but it still juices and blends-into-a-smoothy very nicely. But from a corporate farm mentality, you still can’t harvest kale for the fresh-to-consumer market unless you are in the business of harvesting and processing the veges and selling ciders/juices or other process foods.
    I think that the 3x% here would be much higher if they also counted the “energy invested to plant and grow but not harvest” food as well.

    if one has not already started, it is time to get going on our backyard gardens, meat rabbits, windowsill gardens, and any other food we can produce if we have not already started! Our plan is to double our production to help out other families. One can really produce a lot in a backyard and in the windows. ***Grow food, not grass*** it is not about pride anymore, it is what we NEED to do.

    It is appalling to see how much food is wasted in this country. We Americans are so spoiled. Half-eaten Big Macs get dumped in the trash. All-you-can-eat buffets (and most people get much more than they can eat. They throw the rest away).

    When steak becomes a luxury item – and I don’t mean filet mignon or a porterhouse, more like a basic chuck roast – we’ll see just how much food gets thrown away.

    Anyone who shops knows why food and energy aren’t calculated into the Consumer Price Index and that food prices have skyrocketed in the last 5 years. It’s only going to get worse. We’re all going to be eating hog jowels ( actually I’ve had hog jowels and they’re not bad ) and pickled crow gizzards pretty soon. As for the obesity problem , 100 years ago people did physical labor at work, on the farm and at home. Does anyone remember cutting grass with an old hand push mower? Does anyone remember crawling under their car and changing their own starter. Today the heaviest thing most people lift at work is their I pad and hard work is having to stand for an hour straight without sitting down.. Recently I dropped my car off at a local repair shop and started walking the 2.5 miles home. A local police officer and two of my neighbors saw me walking and stopped to offer me a ride. One of them was actually mildly offended when I told him I didn’t mind the walk.

    I do believe that this article should be read by everyone. The high cost of food is mostly due to severe weather changes. You had better be growing at least some of what you eat. Food can be grown indoors, in tubs. Use organic seeds. GMO food will kill you. Learn canning. Water should be a major concern also. As the dollar fades, hyperinflation has the power to starve. Prepare.
