A Massive Electromagnetic Pulse Could Collapse The Economy In A Single Moment

A Massive Electromagnetic Pulse Could Collapse The Economy In A Single MomentWhat would you do if all the lights went out and they never came back on?  That is a question that the new NBC series “Revolution” asks, but most people have no idea that a similar thing could happen in real life at any moment.  A single gigantic electromagnetic pulse over the central United States could potentially fry most of the electronics from coast to coast if it was powerful enough.  This could occur in a couple of different ways.  If a powerful nuclear weapon was exploded at a high enough altitude, it could produce an electromagnetic pulse powerful enough to knock out electronics all over the country.  Alternatively, a massive solar storm could potentially cause a similar phenomenon to happen just about anywhere on the planet without much warning.  Of course not all EMP events are created equal.  An electromagnetic pulse can range from a minor inconvenience to a civilization-killing event.  It just depends on how powerful it is.  But in the worst case scenario, we could be facing a situation where our electrical grids have been fried, there is no heat for our homes, our computers don’t work, the Internet does not work, our cell phones do not work, there are no more banking records, nobody can use credit cards anymore, hospitals are unable to function, nobody can pump gas, and supermarkets cannot operate because there is no power and no refrigeration.  Basically, we would witness the complete and total collapse of the economy.  According to a government commission that looked into these things, approximately two-thirds of the U.S. population would die from starvation, disease and societal chaos within one year of a massive EMP attack.  It would be a disaster unlike anything we have ever seen before in U.S. history.

Most Americans are totally clueless about what an EMP attack could do to this nation, but the threat is very real.  There was even a congressional commission that studied the potential effects of an EMP attack on the United States for eight years

The US Congress in 2000 established the Congressional Commission to Assess the Threat to the United States from Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) Attack. In 2004, the committee produced a 70-page executive summary on the EMP threat, and it issued a final report on the matter in 2008. According to the report, “several potential adversaries have or can acquire the capability to attack the United States with a high-altitude nuclear weapon-generated electromagnetic pulse (EMP). A determined adversary can achieve an EMP attack capability without having a high level of sophistication.”

Dr. William Graham was the chairman of that commission, and he says that an EMP attack could knock the United States back into the 1800s in just a single moment

An EMP attack “could not only take down power grids, which are fragile anyway in this country, and telecommunications networks, and financial networks, and traffic controls and many other things, but in addition, there is a very close interrelationship among those national infrastructure capabilities,” Graham says.

“So, for example, we need telecommunications to re-establish the power network, and we need the power network to keep telecommunications going for more than a few hours. And we need the financial network to continue to operate to maintain the economy, we need the transportation system, roads, street lights, control systems, to operate just to get people to the failed power, telecommunication and other systems,” he adds.

Life after an EMP attack “would probably be something that you might imagine life to be like around the late 1800s but with several times the population we had in those days, and without the ability of the country to support and sustain all those people,” Graham says. “They wouldn’t have power. Food supplies would be greatly taken out by the lack of transportation, telecommunication, power for refrigeration and so on.”

Unfortunately, very few of us are equipped to survive in such an environment.  We have become incredibly dependent on technology, and most Americans would have no idea how to do something as simple as growing their own food.  Most people would be in a very serious amount of trouble in a very short period of time.

An article by Mac Slavo detailed some of the things that we could expect in the aftermath of a massive electromagnetic pulse…

The first 24 – 48 hours after such an occurrence will lead to confusion among the general population as traditional news acquisition sources like television, radio and cell phone networks will be non-functional.

Within a matter of days, once people realize the power might not be coming back on and grocery store shelves start emptying, the entire system will begin to delve into chaos.

Within 30 days a mass die off will have begun as food supplies dwindle, looters and gangs turn to violent extremes, medicine can’t be restocked and water pump stations fail.

Are you prepared for such an event?

If not, why not?

And actually, high altitude nuclear explosions and solar storms are not the only things that could produce sizable EMP bursts.

For example, the U.S. military has developed “a directed electromagnetic pulse gun” that can take out all electronics within a limited area.  This kind of weapon can be fired from a plane, a cruise missile or even a drone.  The following is from a recent WND article

A pre-programmed cruise missile not too different from a drone has been proven to be capable of blasting out an EMP-type microwave that was able to destroy personal computers and electrical systems inside a building over which it was flying.

The U.S. Air Force and its contractor Boeing have created the High-powered Microwave Advanced Missile Project, or CHAMP, which was just tested over a Utah desert.

Other nations such as Russia and China are busy developing similar weapons.  The ability to instantly take out the electronics of the enemy would be a very powerful advantage.

Even North Korea has been working on this kind of technology.  According to Newsmax, it is believed that they may have tested a “Super-EMP” weapon back in 2009

North Korea’s last round of tests, conducted in May 2009, appear to have included a “super-EMP” weapon, capable of emitting enough gamma rays to disable the electric power grid across most of the lower 48 states

As this technology becomes more widespread, it will soon be accessible to just about everyone.  You don’t actually need a nuclear weapon to set off a massive electromagnetic pulse.  A non-nuclear pulse generator can do the same thing.  If you set one off next to a power station you could potentially take out the electrical grid for an entire region.

Terrorist groups and lone wolf crazies could even use portable radio frequency weapons to do a tremendous amount of electromagnetic damage over a more limited area.  The following is from a recent article by F. Michael Maloof

Such an individual with a penchant for electronics can pull together components from a Radio Shack or electronic store – even order the components off of selected Internet websites – and fashion a radio frequency, or RF, weapon.

As microprocessors become smaller but more sophisticated, they are even more susceptible to an RF pulse. The high power microwave from an RF weapon produces a short, very high power pulse, said to be billions of watts in a nanosecond, or billionths of a second.

This so-called burst of electromagnetic waves in the gigahertz microwave frequency band can melt electrical circuitry and damage integrated circuits, causing them to fail.

Constructing a radio frequency weapon is not that difficult.  In fact, you can find instructions for how to build them on the Internet.

People need to realize that we live in a world where technology is absolutely exploding and we are dealing with threats that previous generations never even dreamed of.  As the world becomes increasingly unstable, it is inevitable that these kinds of weapons will be used.

It is only a matter of time.

What will life look like after an EMP weapon is used?

That is something to think about.

And we also need to keep watching the sun.  It could produce a massive electromagnetic pulse at literally any moment.  As I have written about previously, scientists tell us that it is only a matter of time before we are hit with a technology-crippling solar super storm.

Most people don’t even realize that the massive solar storm of 1859 fried telegraph machines all over Europe and North America.  If such a storm hit us today, the damage would potentially be in the trillions of dollars.  The following is from a recent New York Times article

A powerful solar (or “geomagnetic”) storm has the potential to simultaneously damage multiple transformers in the electricity grid and perhaps even bring down large sections of it, affecting upwards of a hundred million people in the United States for many months, if not years.

These huge transformers are expensive and difficult to replace, and not many are stockpiled in the United States for an emergency. In the worst case, the impact would be devastating: An outage could cost a few trillion dollars, with full recovery taking years. Not only would parts of the grid be compromised, but telephone networks, undersea cables, satellites and railroads also would be affected.

A 2008 National Academy of Sciences study warned that “because of the interconnectedness of critical infrastructures in modern society,” the “collateral effects of a longer-term outage” would likely include “disruption of the transportation, communication, banking and finance systems, and government services; the breakdown of the distribution of potable water owing to pump failure; and the loss of perishable foods and medications because of lack of refrigeration.”

By the way, 2013 is the peak of the current solar cycle.  So we are moving into a time period when conditions will be very favorable for solar storms.

Let us hope that we are never hit with a massive electromagnetic pulse that is strong enough to take out all of our electronics.

But if it did happen, and all the lights went out for good, what would you do?

EMP Attack On The United States

Time 00:00: NK fires EMP bomb over US.
Time 00:30: US launches massive retaliatory strike on NK, starting with 5-MT H-bomb on Pyongyang.
    Time 01:15: NK exterminated.

    • MichaelfromTheEconomicCollapse

North Korea would probably not be so stupid.

A much more realistic scenario would have them firing an unmarked rocket from an unmarked freighter in the Gulf of Mexico.

      Who would we blame then?

      Michael

      • Brian

or giving islamic terrorists the equipment to do it…

So how are our missles shielded from an EMP attack that fries batteries, melts wiring and glitches computer driven guidance systems?

  • Xena

With as easy as many media channels seem to believe an EMP attack is, I have to wonder what it has not happened yet? Mr. Cave dweller in Afghanistan would surely not be affected, so what not? What’s stopping the next terrorist nutjob from sending his henchmen on down to radio shack to bring the evil empire to its knees? Thoughts?

  • K

Michael, wondered if you had noticed Boeing’s new toy. Wonderful, you can not cause emp destruction, without the onus of popping a nuclear weapon. Could even see situations where it could be used in this Country. A certain area is resisting, say a new gun control law. Poof, out go the lights. In heavily forested areas like where I live, wood is a wonderful substitute for heat and light. But in the cities, it would look like the sacking of Rome.

    • K

spelling error you can not, should read you can now.

  • Mondobeyondo

Funny how not one single word about this very viable threat is mentioned in the mainstream press.

    • Hambone

I own a TV but have no signal — cable or antenna (we do have DVDs and Netflix). I haven’t watched the news in years. I have no desire to.

I have no idea what those boneheads are reporting on, but it doesn’t surprise me that this isn’t among the topics.

They must be too consumed with following J-Lo and reporting on America’s love affair with the Corndog.

    • wandakate robinson

You thought it would be? Please! The government doesn’t care about you, why on earth would they bother to allow this on mainstream television or the internet? The press is monitored, we don’t get “all” of what’s going on now do we? They aren’t going to tell us anything “serious” until the very last minute when it’s too late for us to prepare. That is what government is usually about, is it not?

        • MichaelfromTheEconomicCollapse

Water would definitely be one of the biggest problems that people would have to deal with after an EMP attack.

          Michael

          • cleo

we have a pond where we can boil water to purify, plenty of wood and a copper kettle…a lot of work, but would have water

          • Mark

Michael, you wrote an artice about places to move in the past. Did you consider EMP when you thought that Idaho was the best spot? It is down wind of the nuke plants in Hanford area.

        • Hambone

This is actually a big reason I (recently) moved from Texas. If things suddenly went to pot, the inability to access water was the one thing I could not overcome. Even catchment/storage was impractical because that assumes it will eventually rain, which is not a safe assumption where I lived.

        • http://www.facebook.com/mark.wandrey Mark Wandrey

Simple solar accumulators can run pumps on wells, or better direct drive windmills can run pumps. They did for centuries, and are relatively simple engineering. For that matter, I have water catchment on my farm. It currently only feeds animals and gardens, but that can change.

        • Mark

There is always gravity if you have water higher than the garden and your home.

        • yahoo

Have you people never known of hand water pumps ?How
do you think they got water in the last century before electric?

          • Gay Veteran

My grandparents had a well and a water bucket in the early 1960s.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002109532283 Jillane Kent

Are handpumps common in today’s world? Do you believe people in large urban, concrete jungles possess the knowledge and the resources to build them on a massive scale before dehydration loomed?

      • wandakate robinson

Hey Michael…What do u knw if anything about the fuel-less generators. They come with a solar-panel. You can still have power with them as long as there is sun. With no sun you would have to crank them by hand and the hand-crank is included with the generator. I can get one for about $1,400.You know anything about them?, or if it would be worth purchasing one of them. They don’t run the whole place, but you can use them for the frig and maybe one more elec. thing at a time. Any info would be appreciated, thx…

    • wandakate robinson

Most of the time yes. Satan doesn’t bother me anymore. JESUS is the answer, and the sooner we accept him the better off we will be. There is only “ONE GOD”. He is with me no matter what this world does, he will see me through to the end. Bless you…

By the way, Happy New Year everybody. :)

    Michael

    • RICHARD

Happy new year to you to michael. It has been a pleasure reading your posts all these years. hopefully well be around or have power to continue to read them.

    • Syrin

I admire the sentiment, but with the changing of the calendar, so comes the nation destroying economic policies of Obamugabe. The next two years will be the worst two years in our nation’s history outside the Civil War, and they may even challenge those years. We deserve it. We have an uninformed populace who let Chris Matthews and Jon Stewart do their thinking for them and are easily indoctrinated into the state message. I hope I am wrong, but I doubt I am.

      • Einstein

How stupid are you, really? You’re equating Obamacare with an event that kills 2/3rds of the people in this country. ou should be forced to live through this calamity just to put some sense into your head.

        • Birger_Skruddusvingen

“You’re equating Obamacare with an event that kills 2/3rds of the people in this country.”

Not neccesarily equating but “worst event since then”.

I think “the nation destroying economic policies of Obamugabe” encompasses more than just “Obamacare”.

      • Gay Veteran

poor Syrin doesn’t know that Jon Stewart is a comedian

      • wandakate robinson

No, I’ve been following this for years, and you are more than likely correct. Obama and the Washington crowd are not helping us at all. You are right as to the fact that things will get worst. How on earth can they get any better until we change policies and government personnel? We need leaders that help us, not hurt and destroy us. GOD knows what he’s doing and most of what is going on we have no control over, our hands are tied for the most part. Prepare and Pray for safety, and assist anyone who may need your help.

      • wandakate robinson

You mentioned the destroying of economic policies, yes, you are so right. And as you said the next two yrs. will be the worst two yrs. in our nation’s history,is also right. The closer we get to the end of the age and the return of JESUS, the worst it will be. The Bible warned us, it gave signs in Matthew 24 as well as other scriptures. We have to have the leaders that we have or the end-time puzzle that GOD has planned will be completed. These people that run the govn. today are being used as pawns to get the job done. Our economy will worsen, our morals will worsen, we are in a mess and it will only continue to get worst. JESUS said these things must happen, they are the beginning of the birth pains. Prepare as best you can spiritually and physically as well as mentally, it’s going to be a rough road ahead, but the end result will be “Peace”, and “Goodwill” and that will last for eternity with GOD. We only have approximately 7 more years left so hang in there and don’t take the mark…

  • Cleo

I believe we are prepped to survive an EMP

    • K

Really, how far are you from the nearest nuke plant?

      • Mark

Japan is upwind from us, a long ways away, but it will still get here within weeks in the air or a few years in the ocean. We do not have nukes in our state.

        • Ray

What does being upwind have to do with an EMP? Electromagnetic Pulse. Has nothing to do with wind or air.

          • Mark

If most circuits are fried with EMP, the safety controls at a nuke plant might not work. The pumps to cool the reaction will not work. You might have a meltdown or containment damage. It has to go somewhere and down wind is it or in the ocean if the plant is located there.

          • Nexusfast123

Add in all the cooling ponds which will catch fire.

  • RICHARD

I am not looking forward to any of what is coming what ever it may be, but i am ready for the stone age if it happens.

  • Hambone

I live near a large community of Amish. On one hand, I like to think that if something like this happens, they say, “whatever. I guess we don’t need those government-mandated lights on our buggies any more?”

On the other hand, I suspect the crazies will go after them early and hard. I hope they can defend themselves.

    • http://www.facebook.com/mark.wandrey Mark Wandrey

Hambone – Amish are pacifists, but they accept help. Team up with your friends and protect them. They WILL reward you by keeping you alive. They are shrewd but fair traders. If you let them be killed or overrun in this sort of scenario, you have no one to blame but yourselves.

  • Cleo

I’m don’t we really know what an EMP would do…a lot of speculation and theories. I have read that an all metal vehicle with no fiberglass might survive ok. Hopefully, we won’t have to find out

  • Hambone

This is a year of record solar activity, and we have missed two solar eruptions this year alone that could have caused this very event. Kind of surprised that the mainstream media talks about EMP. Is it just their usual scare mongering? Or is there chatter in the elite circles for the planned event? I read several scenarios as how it could happen except the obvious one of the US government doing it to quell the unsettled masses. Guess the 2013 as done nothing for my cynicism. Happy New Year everyone!

  • JOHNNY BARTEE

You want something else to fear? OK try this. The government and military terrorists are the LEAST of your worries. Fear the rogue elements that have already developed EMP rifles and other EMP weapons and are not one bit afraid to use them against EVERYBODY.

Can’t imagine being in that situation, but it may not be out of the question the way things are. Major issues: Greed, lack of morals, disowning GOD in this country. What judgment do we deserve? 2 years ago here in Roanoke, Va was talking with manager of a co-op store. He, at a family gathering, was talking with his tractor trailer driver brother-in-law. The brother N law told him that he and a few other drivers with his company had been taking loads of food to some mountains in northern Virginia to an area where the trucks were unloaded by workers on site. They were not allowed to ask questions or see the storage area because it was federal property. The manager was having problems obtaining food stuff and the brother N law said it could be because the govt. was hauling it to the mountains. Does anyone have knowledge of this happening???

    • Vern

In the Jessie Ventura Consipracy Theory show this year they drove through an underground facility in the Ozarks (Oz Ark). Many tunnels, loading ramps, and roadways big enough for 18-wheelers to get through. Related?

    • wandakate robinson

No, however it does not surprise me. Washington will take care of its own. Do you think in a massive crisis that the government would take care of us ordinary citizens? Don’t hold your breath…Remember Katrina? Now what about New Jersey just recently with all the massive storm damage from Sandy? The government is giving them a really hard time with providing the help they need. The president went there to view the damage, and Governor Christie begged them for assistance…He’s still begging. When the going gets rough, we must protect ourselves with our own food, water, medicine etc. They are storing up in the mountains, sure they are, they want to survive so they can run the country, who really cares about us? As far as I know only GOD would care.

There was a show on the history channel or something, I forgot, in which somebody on the show said that Iran takes these barges and loads them up with a missle and takes them out to sea then fires the missle straight up into the air and detonates them. They claim that the missles are a “failed test” but this guy said that the tests are perfect for EMP missile attack tests…

    • Brian

I have read about them ‘testing’ this way in the caspian sea….and using an innocent looking freighter with a hidden missle launch system and sailing right up to our shore is one of the scenarios considered by some experts!

Nest your electronics in aluminum foil inside of metal trashcans with metal tape around the lid seal. If you drive an earlier model vehicle, make sure it does not have electronic components or have back up modules in a Faraday Cage. Have solar panels and inverters *have those protected as well). Even have a wind-up watch as they are electronic.

  • Tin foil nutter

I don’t think we’d survive an EMP attack, no matter how well prepared. Fukushima taught us that bad things happen when nuclear plants don’t have power. Think all of those backup generators will stay on forever?

Once the power runs out at the nuclear plant, *BOOM*. Everyone downwind will be affected.

If even only 10% of them melt down, we’re still screwed.

Dear Earthlings: I’ve gotta’ tell y’all that all this survival preparation won’t get you anywhere. Pretty soon, those of us who KNOW Jesus Christ and worship Him as God and Savior are going to be leaving you……in a quick blink. When He returns Himself, that great tribulation will have been going on around 3 1/2 years past our removal. Those of you who’ve woken up to His salvation…..who’ve given their hearts and lives to Him (and paid for it dearly) will be removed when He physically returns and turns this orb into a hot coal. There’s no hiding under rocks then!

    • wandakate robinson

Hello Steve…JESUS is coming soon that is for sure. We will leave the earth and that is also a “fact”. This great tribulation is supposed to be 7 years. Times, times and half a time according to Daniel. Don’t you think we will suffer through at least half of that or ? JESUS “Does Not” come for the saints until the last trumpet call, that is when the dead will rise up from the graves and meet the LORD in the air. The church will be here until then. The wrath of the last 7 bowl judgments we will escape because the Church is not appointed to the wrath of GOD, but the seal + trumpet judgments are for everyone saved or unsaved. Hopefully you understand the scripture this way, as anything else is not really Biblical. Bless you…GOD is in control, even though Satan may be running the show now, he will lose in the end…amen

Amen Wandakate! There are more of us who understand His imminent coming, and I’m marvelously delighted that your words are identical to what the Spirit’s guided me to realize (not just “believe”). I’m soon releasing a book entitled “Dear Earthlings,” which is a message which connects the dots to knowing Christ personally. It’s for those who’ll miss Christ’s calling us up, yet still remain the three and a half years past our rapture (time = a year; times = the first multiple…being two years; half a time = half a year…all adding up to three and a half years). Christ’s church is spiritual…..not a denomination…..spiritual…..not cultural or ethnic…..purely spiritual. His church is comprised of those of us who worship our Lord Jesus as God and Savior; who constantly seek the Holy Spirit’s counsel….who follow His command to love Him above everything and to love EVERYONE. Thus, our names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life!
I’ll see YOU by the water.

        Steve

Jesus is coming but noone knows when it could be in 50 years only God knows as it says in the Bible. People have been guessing for 2000 years even the apostles and all were wrong. And those people in major crisis like WWII also thought it was the end or how about Bolshievek revolution over 70 milliion christians murdered and they thought it was the end as well. My point is no one knows the time that the Lord will return so instead of guessing we should always be prepared and follow him.

And their is no such thing as the pretribulation Rapture that is a lie that started in the 1820s in England. Why dont you research and you will find that noone before this time period talked about this. And not only that but Jesus himself suffered and said that we will suffer. And all throughout history Christians have been murdered for their faith. Hundreds and hundreds of millions all throughout history. And even today Christians all around the world suffer like in Iraq and Syria Christians are being murdered for their faith. Or in Sudan and even persecuted in China and other atheist countries. So what makes us think we during the End of Times are so special that Jesus Christ will take us into heaven and spare us. After all back then Christians were so much more holier and still suffered. If we think we will be spared than that is like saying we are better than those people Christians when we are not.

And the Pretribulation rapture is not biblical at all. Unfortunately some individuals just misinterpret scripture and then everyone believes them. Their people like Jack van Impe who even for years said 2012 is the end and obviously it wasn’t These same people use a fake mayan religion which sacrificed people by cutting their head as a source for Christianity.

Jesus Christ said we would suffer and we will however he will return after the tribulation and then we will go to heaven and he will judge the living and the dead.

We need to know how to be ready for this. Can you please do a story on how to prepare? I need electricity for my water well. A hand pump doesn’t give enough water, plus my well is 1000 feet deep.

WHAT a Lame Article. I think there’s at least 7 books out there that speaks of this and 100 similar articles on other prepper sites. Give me a break!

Hi, I saw all of those books in the book stores and saw a lot on this topic, but those (preppers) that are prepared were “smart” to watch out for themselves. If anything happens then good for them, if nothing happens they still have whatever they stockpiled and that is a lot more than most people will have. So then you will be the one who may suffer. Think again Mom in Ky.
