All Of This Whining And Crying About The Sequester Shows Why America Is Doomed

Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on Google+Share on LinkedInShare on StumbleUponEmail this to someone

CryingIf we can’t even cut federal spending by 2.4 percent without much of the country throwing an absolute hissy fit, then what hope does America have?  All of this whining and crying about the sequester is absolutely disgraceful.  The truth is that even if the sequester goes into effect, the U.S. government will still take in more money than ever before in 2013 and it will still spend more money than ever before in 2013.  So it is a bit disingenuous to call what is about to happen “a spending cut”, but for the sake of argument let’s concede that point.  Even if the budget really was being “cut” by 85 billion dollars, that only would only amount to a “cut” of 2.4 percent to federal spending.  It would barely make a dent in the federal budget deficit for 2013.  The U.S. government would still accumulate about as much new debt in fiscal year 2013 as it did in all the years from the inauguration of George Washington to the inauguration of Ronald Reagan combined.  Our debt to GDP ratio would continue to soar.  The sequester cuts would essentially only be a minor bump on the road to financial oblivion.  But if you listen to Barack Obama and his allies, they would have you believe that we are facing a great national crisis because of these impending cuts.  They would have you believe that hundreds of thousands of people will lose their jobs and that many government agencies will no longer be able to operate effectively.  They would have you believe that “granny won’t get her lunch” and “roofs blown off by Hurricane Sandy won’t get repaired”.  Well, if all of that is true, then what in the world would our country look like if we actually cut a trillion dollars from the federal budget this year and started living within our means?

Have you ever known people that are already hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt and yet go out and regularly blow thousands more dollars on wild shopping sprees?

Such debt addicts may be very proud of their new homes, their new cars, their new clothes and all of their fancy electronic gadgets, but it was all purchased with debt.  When a “day of reckoning” finally arrives, many debt addicts lose absolutely everything and end up in the street.

That is what America is like today.

Our politicians like to show off all of the stuff that our government is spending money on, but the truth is that we are spending gigantic mountains of money that we simply do not have.  We are literally stealing from our kids and our grandkids so that we can continue to enjoy a massively inflated standard of living that we have not earned.

But we can’t stop ourselves.  Americans are absolutely addicted to big government.  They want a gigantic government that sends out free money to more than 100 million Americans every month, but they absolutely do not want to pay for it.  They would rather steal money from their children and their grandchildren to pay for it.

This has got to stop, because we are literally destroying the future of this country.

If Americans really want a massively bloated government that takes care of everyone from the cradle to the grave then they should pay for it.

If Americans don’t want to pay for it, then they should reduce the size of the government to a level where they are willing to pay for it.

But stealing money from future generations of Americans to pay our bills is absolutely disgraceful.

As I talked about in a previous article, we are stealing more than 100 million dollars from our children and our grandchildren every single hour of every single day.

Is there anyone out there that is willing to stand up and defend that kind of theft?

But the vast majority of Americans don’t want to do anything to stop it, because they don’t want to harm “the economy” (i.e. our ridiculously bloated standard of living).

Will the sequester cuts hurt the economy a bit?

Of course.

Government spending cuts always hurt the economy.

If we raised taxes to help pay the bills that the federal government has been racking up, would that hurt the economy?

Of course.

Tax increases always hurt the economy.

But if we continue on the path that we are today, America is doomed.

The U.S. national debt is the biggest single debt in the history of the world.  It is now more than 16.6 trillion dollars, and it has gotten more than 23 times larger since Jimmy Carter first entered the White House.

If our politicians suddenly decided to go to a balanced budget today, our debt-fueled “bubble economy” would disappear and we would immediately plunge into a deep economic depression.

Do the American people have the character to be able to handle that kind of an “adjustment” to our standard of living?

Of course not.

That is why so many of our politicians are scared to death of doing anything about the debt.

And even these small sequester “cuts” are freaking everyone out.  Many of our politicians and many in the mainstream media are openly declaring that “the sky is falling”.  Just check out the following short excerpt from a recent New York Times article

The owner of a Missouri smokehouse that makes beef jerky is worried about a slowdown in food safety inspections. A Montana school district is drawing up a list of teachers who could face layoffs. Officials at an Arizona border station fear that lines to cross the border could lengthen. And if Olympic National Park in Washington cannot hire enough workers to plow backcountry trails, they may stay closed until the snow melts in July.

But that is nothing compared to what others are saying.  CNN is declaring that if the sequester cuts happen, “granny won’t get her lunch” and “roofs blown off by Hurricane Sandy won’t get repaired”.

And check out these ominous warnings from Barack Obama about what will happen if the sequester cuts go into effect…

“Emergency responders like the ones who are here today — their ability to help communities respond to and recover from disasters will be degraded.  Border Patrol agents will see their hours reduced.  FBI agents will be furloughed.  Federal prosecutors will have to close cases and let criminals go.  Air traffic controllers and airport security will see cutbacks, which means more delays at airports across the country.  Thousands of teachers and educators will be laid off.  Tens of thousands of parents will have to scramble to find childcare for their kids.  Hundreds of thousands of Americans will lose access to primary care and preventive care like flu vaccinations and cancer screenings.”

The Obama administration has even decided to release hundreds of illegal immigrants in anticipation of the cuts…

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials have released “several hundred” immigrants from deportation centers across the country, saying the move is an effort to cut costs ahead of budget cuts due to hit later this week.

Announcing the news Tuesday, ICE officials said that the immigrants were released under supervision and continue to face deportation. After reviewing hundreds of cases, those released were considered low-risk and “noncriminal,” officials said.

The claims about the sequester cuts just seem to get more ridiculous with each passing day.  Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano is warning that the cuts will make the U.S. more vulnerable to terrorist attacks,  and Obama recently decided not to send an aircraft carrier to the Persian Gulf because of “budget concerns“.

Apparently he sees no problem with using the U.S. military to score political points.

And Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke says that the budget cuts will result in “less actual deficit reduction in the short run”.

How stupid do they think we all are?

Yes, the sequester cuts will have an impact on the economy, but they won’t cause the sky to fall.

The following is what the CBO says the economic impact of the cuts is likely to be

The Congressional Budget Office estimates the cuts will cost 750,000 jobs and hit growth by 0.6 percentage points, assuming the cuts remain in effect for the remainder of the fiscal year. Some economists expect a slightly bigger impact.

Remember, these are actually very small cuts.

In fact, according to U.S. Representative Lynn Jenkins, the U.S. government will actually be spending more money in 2013 than it did in 2012 even if the sequester cuts go into effect…

“There’s a fact that says we are going to take in more money this fiscal year than we have ever taken in before,” Jenkins said.  “The budget this year, we will spend more money this year than we spent last year even if the sequester goes into effect.  We will spend more money even if the sequester goes into effect.”

So why is everyone whining and crying over such a very small amount of money?

If you want to get upset about something, why not get upset about things that are increasing our debt by trillions of dollars?

For example, according to a Government Accountability Office report that was just released, Obamacare is going to cause the federal debt to rise by $6.2 trillion.

Why aren’t more people getting upset over that?

Sadly, it is because America is a debt addict.  Most Americans don’t really care much when federal spending skyrockets out of control, but if anyone tries to slow down the spending a little bit they throw hissy fits.

And please don’t tell me that “the big government Republicans” are much better than “the big government Democrats” on budget issues.  The Republicans have caved in and have gone along with all of this wild spending every single time.

On March 27th, they will have another opportunity to do something.  That is when the current continuing resolution expires.

At that time, the Republicans could refuse to pass anything but a balanced budget.

Or they could at least refuse to pass anything except a budget that would cut the federal budget deficit in half.

But they won’t do anything once again.  They will cave in and go along with the status quo because they are cowards.

So we will continue to rip off future generations to fuel our current bloated standard of living.

Thomas Jefferson understood that government borrowing is theft from future generations.  He once made the following statement….

And I sincerely believe, with you, that banking establishments are more dangerous than standing armies; and that the principle of spending money to be paid by posterity, under the name of funding, is but swindling futurity on a large scale.

Shame on you Democrats.

Shame on you Republicans.

Shame on you America.

You are destroying the future of America for your own selfish reasons.

If future generations get the chance, they will look back on what you did to them and they will curse you for it.

For much more on our exploding national debt, please see the following article: “55 Facts About The Debt And U.S. Government Finances That Every American Voter Should Know“.

Not that living within our means would be easy.

Like I said, it would mean a deep economic depression, and it would also likely mean a tremendous amount of societal chaos.

Even now, while we are still living in the boom times, things are really starting to get crazy out there.  Just check out what is going on in Oakland

Oakland’s crime problems have gotten so bad that some people aren’t even bothering to call the cops anymore; instead, they’re trying to solve and prevent crimes themselves.

KPIX 5 cameras caught up with a half dozen neighbors in East Oakland’s Arcadia Park neighborhood Monday as they walked the streets on the lookout for crime. The vigilance has never seemed more necessary than now; 25 homes in the neighborhood have been burglarized over the last two months alone.

In a neighborhood that has started to feel like the wild west, people have even started posting “wanted” signs.

“You have to walk around in your house with a gun to feel safe here,” said Alaska Tarvins of the Arcadia Park Board of Directors.

If this is how bad things are now, how bad will they be when a day of reckoning for our economy arrives?

And a day of reckoning is coming.

Our politicians can try to keep kicking the can down the road for as long as they can, but eventually time will run out.  Just take a look at what is happening in Greece and Spain.  Meanwhile, all of this can kicking is just making the eventual crisis even worse.

We can borrow our way to prosperity for a while, but in the end there is always a very bitter price to pay for doing so.

I would love to tell you that there is a chance that all of this will be turned around, but the truth is that all of this whining and crying about the sequester shows that America is doomed.

I hope that you are getting ready.

  • Tim

    As always, you nailed it!

    • markthetruth

Well Michael didn’t Nail it. His Research finds all the Nails the Government is putting in our Coffin.
And the Government is nailing them in one by one.

      the end…

  • A.S.

Cut your credit cards. Boycott your banks. Pay with cash! Liquidate anything you don’t absolutely need and use the cash to buy food that will last for decades like beans and rice. A depression is coming that will make the Great Depression look like the smallest recession. We deserve everything that is coming to us for believing in evil politicians.

    • markthetruth

Wrong!!! you will end up with nothing!!!

Buy Seeds and plant them , water and care for them as they will help you see that you have the power to Grow your future.

      the end…

      • Brian M

You have to buy the right kind of seeds.

The seeds at the feed stores are genetically engineered to be a one-time proposition. They produce sterile plants that can’t reproduce, so, you are forced to come back every season and buy new seeds.

        • Johnny Brainetree

Thanks to Monsanto, one of earth’s most hated corporations.

      • Orange Jean

I think a balanced approach is needed. Yes, it’s important to try to buy good seeds and plant them if you can do that. But remember… gardening is iffy at times, and it’s not uncommon for crops to fail through unexpected events… you know – drought, floods, winds, bugs, critters.

So I think it’s important to also get some appropriate food storage. And be sure you know how to store it so it will last. I had a few 100 lbs of wheat berries (and a grinder) once that got full of weevils. Unfortunately I was flat out broke at the time (unemployed for about a year, with a little kid to feed) and ended up having to eat it anyway. Killed the d*^% weevils off with some kind of chemical (don’t recall which, it was recommended to me)… then because I was squeamish… had to figure out how to separate the bugs from the wheat before grinding and making bread (what I did was soak the wheat, the dead weevils floated to the top, drained the wheat off carefully and had to dry it before grinding… it would take an entire day to prepare a few days food).

  • We are probably already past the point of no return. Now it’s time to prepare for the day of reckoning. In fact, there might not be a single day that defines the endgame. Rather, we could just continue the slow downward slide that the USA has been on for decades. For those who can’t find jobs, the day of reckoning is already here. However, it will get worse for them when the government can no longer provide assistance. It is clear that Bernanke will keep printing money and trying to prevent the collapse for as long as possible. It’s also clear that the government will never make the hard choices required to turn things around. We’re in a race to the bottom with most of the Western world as fellow contestants.

    • Blackhawk

The race seems to be on to bring more than 51% of the voters to total dependency on government assistance before the bottom falls off.
At that time the majority of voters will decide whatever their parent government imposes on them and the “Democracy” will continue unabated.
Sleep on America, your government is taking care that you don’t have a future!!!

      • Arch

This is the story of Joseph in Egypt. Through clever manipulation of grain supplies, Joseph enslaves all Egypt. Tellingly, he puts the Egyptians in concentration camps (referred to as “cities” in the story) where they work as slaves. Then he returns them to their own land as sharecroppers, exacting a twenty percent levy on their productive efforts. In the meantime, his own people enjoy living off “the fat of the land”.

This is almost exactly what transpired after the communist revolution in Russia. The kulaks (farmers) were taken off their land and then returned as slave labor working for the communist’s “five year” plan. The result was the mass starvation of millions of Russians. One need only to examine the composition of the Comintern leadership to see why this happened.

Reading these stories and histories carefully and without the traditional interpretations, clarifies future events in America.

  • MeMadMax

Well, lets see here. What are the biggest things that the gov’ment pays for?

Hmm, quick glance at usdebtclock org shows:

    #1: Medicare at $810 billion
#2: Social security at $774 billion
    #3: Defense at $666 billion
#4: Misc entitlements at $353 Billion

In my opinion, #1, and #2 need to go…. now.

They are socialist programs, and have no business being in our country. Our country was doing great for over a hundred years WITHOUT #1 and #2… it will do great without… If you relied on the gov’ment for your retirement and #2 then you just screwed yourself: You will never see that money. Start saving for your own retirement now. We have whole generations of kids that have no idea how to save money, much less retirement money…. Time to start relearning…

#3 needs to be chopped in half. That means ending our role as worlds’ policeman and finally putting the UN out to pastor, which has become a bunch of united nations that hate the US, but use our military to do their dirty work….
#4 will need to be fine tuned. These are where the foodstamps and welfare programs lie. But by all means, keep #4 going as it is a true safety net program that is actually helpful.

    • MeMadMax

Also, get this thru your head, now: Retirement… healthcare… housing… etc, etc, is a ***privilege***, not a right…. even in the most “successful” socialist/communist countries, its the same everywhere…. No matter where you go, there will always be the haves… and the have nots…

      • Jagrick

Apparently you are doing ok to state that. I do hope you never lose it all near retirement age and look back and still believe what you wrote. Lots of things aren’t fair in life so you wringing your hands over the spending isn’t gonna change it. Just you turn down SSI when the time comes and all that think like you. Oh and make sure you pay for your own insurance when you no longer work too.

        • Rodster

It’s a ponzi scheme that the Government conditioned the masses into believing they needed or they would die broke. The money paid into the system far outweighs what you get back. I was all a big power grab.

        • MeMadMax

Actually, I’m unemployed, have $0.0 dollars saved up, plan to voluntarily go homeless in order to get a job in a different state while the wife and kids stay here. I’m also using the internet from the library and I’m a Navy vet(MM3). I don’t expect to see a dollar of SSI because I know how the government works. I have known since age 18 that I will never be able to retire because 1. I was not born into the top 3%, and 2. I don’t expect the country to survive the next 10-15 years or so. So, here I am going on 31 and have nothing to lose and nothing to gain because I know better. Also, I’m going to that other state in order to procure a boat because my wife is from guatemala and I actually have a higher chance of becoming a millionare because I won’t have to compete with the government and a sea of imbeciles all wanting something for nothing…

          Have fun, ahole….

          • Mondobeyondo

Wow! You sound very much like me! Except I never served in the military (thank you for serving our country!)

    • Mark

Good luck with your getting rid of #1 and #2. These people vote and they really do feel that they are owed the social security taxes that were paid to support their parents. It does not matter that congress could change the law and cut social security anytime, because they will not go there.

      • MeMadMax

Refund it and shut it down.

    • arizonadiane

I have paid into MY social security as well as other retirement plans. I will be retiring in 4 months. I do not plan to loose the money I was forced to PAY into SS and Medicare. So, re think what you are saying mr. max. Some of us had no choice and the real thing for the government to do is look into SS and medicare and revamp it so younger people will not loose it.

I agree it was a socialist plan brought on by a socialist president who kept himself in the presidency because he could. (Which is exactly

      what Obama wants to do.)

However you can’t deny the seniors who have been forced into this plan all their lives.

And I find it humorous that you think welfare and food stamps is not a socialist plan either. We now have 50% of the country on that plan.

    • Robert (qslv)

I agree. Starting today, everyone who starts his first job will NOT get a social security card or number, just a note saying ” you’re on your own”.All social security and medicare deductions will STOP today. Everyone who is alive and put in will get ALL their money back. The program WILL be shut down as of noon today. You have until Tuesday (garbage pick-up day) to put your sick and elderly on the curb for garbage pickup. They will not be picked up with the garbage next week. Also leave at the curb all your Garys who are on the dole and are not working for a living.

      • MeMadMax

As much as I appreciate your sarcasm, and I know how you libtards are…
        What else do you expect?
You know the entitlement programs are gonna end right?
So, how do you want it to end?
With the destruction of the country or in one long fart?

  • Half the country tried to stop it in the last election. The other half simply does not care or is just too stupid to do the math. Pure Madness

    • WarriorClass3

Half? Hardly. 90% of Americans don’t even know what freedom is or they wouldn’t have voted for either Romney or Obama. Ron Paul was the only one that even came close to a freedom agenda and true spending cuts – 1 trillion the first year. Romney just wanted to slow the growth, not reverse it. Nevertheless, very soon there will be no economy to worry about and the debt will exist on balance sheets only.

  • Tim

Today I checked the Monthly Treasury Statement (put out by the U.S. Treasury), and I was surprised to see there was actually a small budget surplus for the month of January! Then I remembered that the debt ceiling was reached on 12/31/12. So the federal government was limited in what it could spend last month. It’s no wonder that they moved to “temporarily” suspend the debt ceiling. They were afraid that their inability to spend would have untoward effects on the economy.
And the federal debt has increased by $185 billion since the debt limit was suspended!

I agree that there is no hope for this nation. All we can do is brace ourselves and prepare for impact.

  • Mark

We will not make a real cut in spending. This is just a slow down in growth. This will go on until the rest of the world will say no more. When that will happen is any ones guess.

    • Winston Smith

September in Moscow is looking like the time.
Looks like an alternate Reserve currency
is about to be rolled out.

  • JW

I think you are silly. Steal from the grandkids, indeed. By then the debt as we know it will probably be repudiated and the government collapsed. Eighty five billion indeed! Even you have said this is chicken feed.

Yet you point out that people are out patrolling the streets to prevent crime because the usual authorities are doing nothing. There is something happening here that has little or nothing to do with the 85 billion as currency.

I am tired of talk about numbers on a computer screen. The question that is important is the real productive capacity of the country and its stability. Not some funny numbers which likely represent nothing at all.

Why is the real physical economy falling apart even though the government is spending trillions? Where is the money going? In what sense is the money even real?

If the government fails to spend 85 billion at critical choke points in the real economy the effect will likely be much greater immediately than not spending a trillion to support financial assets on wall street.

Get real, literally. The current financial system won’t be around. Maybe the real economy won’t be either.

    How Stupid We Are ???

Everyone Wanted to be Smart, A weird thing Happen everyone became STUPID , so in the end they all where “GENERATION STUPID HUMANS” , They where so STUPID they thought they where SMART. So everything they do is Stupid. And it’s becomes one funny Show, but it Became REALITY!!!!!! now it’s SAD and We are Controlled By SMART Electronics Made by “STUPID HUMANS”. I’m Confused now, maybe I’m Stupid !!!

*Written and coming from a Smart Computer…

    the end…

    • brvd

      Haha, great stuff. But true…

  • The Sequester is nothing but a show pony brought out when the circus comes to town. It’s only to show the rest of the world, look we’re DOING SOMETHING. But what’s the least amount you can do but still make it look like you are doing something, have a Sequester. It will buy some time to keep the monkey off your back, but the Ratings Agencies will be back for more. The general consensus among Politicians is to spend more during a crisis, but when times are good to spend more. So there is never a time when a Government should spend less, never. One thing is certain, the good times are definitely over, and it can only get worse from this point. If the sheeple stopped watching Dancing with the Stars, all these Talent Shows, tapping their iPhone for 5 minutes they might realize what is happening right in front of their eyes, until that happens their is absolutely no hope.

    • DiscouragedOne

I think we are in for another credit rating reduction…soon.

      • arizonadiane

Maybe we need one for the people to rise up against the government! This is not our country!!

  • Rodster

“And Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke says that the budget cuts will result in “less actual deficit reduction in the short run”.

How stupid do they think we all are?”
    REAL STUPID, like Gary2 stupid.

    • gary2 stupid, lolololol, you mean low and no information STOOOOPID

    • VegasBob

Anybody who believes anything Bernokio (Bernanke) says is a fool. Bernokio is a pathological liar with a track record of failure that would have caused him to be drummed out of any occupation other than economics. He wouldn’t recognize an economic bubble if it bit his posterior.

Bernokio is a fraud, a liar and a charlatan. He is a putz who is the biggest gonif in world history.

    • Mark

That would happen because the government will pay out more cash to more people as the jobs go away

  • Obama’s comments were Interesting

The emphasis is on, if these cuts take place we won’t be here to Protect you. It’s gone from the Government providing basic services that supports the community to a Government that is there to protect you. Which is more true than not true, the Government has fobbed off all of the essential components to support community life, Power, Water, Food Stamps, Security, Prisons etc to Private Corporations.

That’s what Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt is all about.
But as Roosevelt said ‘We have nothing to fear but fear itself’?

  • K

Lets start with so called Obamacare.I think it is badly misnamed. Yes, he signed it, after the House and Senate passed it. But should it not be named for the one person, who is most responsible for it? It should be called Robertscare. As the only man in the Country, who could have stopped it, just with a stroke of his pen. As to the usual, throw Granny under the bus crowd. Keep wishing for the law of the jungle.I promise you it is coming, sooner than you think.

  • jsmith

And on top of all this, Obama wants to give amnesty to 25 to 30 million illegals who will make a bee line for benefits. Crazy man! Absolute madness!

    • leeholsen

all the illegals getting benefits and obamacare have got the US down for a 21st century version of the 19th century long dpression that lasted 6 years or something similar.
by most counts, the US is still at recessionary levels, so we may just blow by those 6 years and make a very long depression.
personally, i’m expecting stagnation and high unemployment for years to come.
(i can’t believe i dont drink daily knowing whats coming).

    • arizonadiane

And on top of all his fear mongering which isn’t going to happen, he already released and will release more illegals sitting in AZ jails. Good job Obama. This has nothing to do with the sequester, it has to do with he hates our governor.

      • TooLittleTooLate

In my own opinion, what I think and believe is happening is that our POTUS is using his power to attempt to bully the GOP. If you think our administration is nuts now, wait until after the midterm elections…. He’s using every bit of his time to attempt to make the GOP look like they’re the one’s that are the problem makers.

If he gets the house back for 2 years, think of the damage he could do…. that’s the ONLY thing his sights are on. So, for now, it’s all politics, smoke, mirrors and lies. ( not that it has changed much ) But, if you look at every political move the administration is making and has made for some time, every one of them is designed to make the GOP look like they’re standing in the way of getting anything done.

  • donaldlevit

I have the same thoughts regarding the 2.4% budget cut. If that is causing all this doom, then what would happen if wew actually lived within our means?
    Ah, but there’s the rub.
We don’t have to live within our means.
We are a sovereign currency, so debt is irrelevant, for we can create money out of thin air, and never go bankrupt. The US is not like a household. Apparently, it is not like any other economic entity that ever existed either.
How do you respond to such inanity, or worse, insanity?

  • Day2Day

Why do people act like the sky is falling?

    Because THEIR sky is falling…

And you ask Michael, why people are not upset over the Federal debt rising $6.2 trillion?

    Because it doesn’t affect them!

You said it yourself, 750k jobs are at stake (notice that “budget-cuts” always translates into laying off workers) and so, that’s 750 thousand people and their families who don’t want to lose their jobs and livelihood…

It’s called apathy… You see, because people don’t care about the trillions of dollars of unsustainable debt, they don’t care about the DEPRESSION that is sweeping Europe, and they don’t care about their neighbor losing their job…

Because it doesn’t “personally” affect them…

So, it’s sad that thousands (perhaps millions) of hardworking people will lose their jobs, but it’s also sad, that people care about nothing else…

And when it’s all said and done, nobody will have to worry about budget-cuts and job losses, because there won’t be a country left!!!!

  • Imaplaneiac

The ” sequester ” is a reduction of planned budget INCREASES – not a REAL reduction or cut of actual expenditures! Many EU countries who committed American style recklessness of overspending, over-debt, over this and over that, are now in deep austerity. They are in penalty mode. They are hurting big time. This they must do to fix problems, and promise not do it again (well, until a century later when the new generation is convinced they are smarter). In a few years, the EU will sort out the mess and move on – more prudent and wiser. Hopefully more skilled.

In the meantime, USA with far far bigger money problem, is starting a de facto civil war to fight over a lousy 2.5% cut of the world’s biggest debt black hole. Because, in the minds of 230 million people, America is the greatest country the world has ever seen, protected by none other than God. The stupid Fed is buying up worthless mortgages, after it has printed a couple of trillions of dollars to buy up a pile of zero interest Treasuries. This is to avoid reckoning. Austerity, suffering, paying for mistakes – these are for others.

    Carnival Triumph! Yes Sir!

Ron Paul called this out and the coward republicans did everything they could to shove him out and put Romney in.

America, if you truly give a crap, stop voting for the lesser of two evils! Gary Johnson and Ron Paul were eminently better than what was put in.

Sadly no one REALLY wants change. It’s easier to just tune into the echo chamber and point fingers.

Check out how much your 401K will get you now that profits from labor have been diverted from the laborers themselves and instead sent to the bottom line. Pensions are a thing of the past and once 401Ks runout it’s going to get ugly.

People vote their true conscience, they might get representatives that mirror their values…….

Throughout world history, no government has ever corrected its financial situation before it defaulted, so expecting it might happen this time isn’t realistic; we are not different from those that defaulted before us.
The best thing for the US is that so much of Europe is going to hit the wall before the US, so there is a chance it can be scared straight.
Unfortunately, Europe is going to hit that wall while obama is still in charge; so it’s going to get much worse. I dont predict an “economic collapse” but a depression is likely.
(Although, considering the amount of real unemployment, food stamps, welfare and govt support the US currently has just to keep the appearence things are normal; I submit the US is in a depression and just doesn’t know it.)

  • Syrin

Why aren’t people upset? Because they don’t FEEL the pain of the debt. They don’t FEEL the consequences of their idiotic voting decisions. There are only a handful of politicians who care about this country starting with Rand Paul.

Once the collapse happens, these people will suffer the same consequences the politicians in France did in 1789, and it’s LONG OVERDUE

    • Tim

I’m not so sure about Rand Paul. I’m afraid that, unlike his father, Rand is a politician who’s more concerned about what’s good for his political career than what’s good for this country.

      • Syrin

I’ve had the same concerns, but those are gone. He’s FAR more practical than his dad. He knows that change MUST be incremental in order to obtain the votes.

What this sequestration is really all about is a continuing campaign effort by Obama and democrat designed to paint the opposition as uncaring, despicable individuals in order to achieve victory in the midterm elections of 2014.

Perhaps someday,President Obama may decide to actually start to govern and stop this endless campaigning. I sure hope so.

But meantime, the American public will continue to endure crisis after crisis and an economy teetering on the brink of another recession all so that he can achieve his ultimate goal of eliminating the opposition Party.

When will the American people (now 5 years into a presidency) finally wake up and begin to hold this President accountable for something?

Even if it is just the proposals that he himself put forward!……..

The Sequestration might be a good place to start.

    • 2Gary2

  • Roger Smith

Not deploying an aircraft carrier to the Persian Gulf? Any time a carrier is deployed, it is going over to relieve another carrier that has been deployed 6 months prior. Not sending the replacement does not save a dime. They just tell the current carrier to remain on station until relieved. This whole sick game doesn’t save one penny. It actually costs more because of all the money that’s already been spent in the shipyards and equipment upgrades to the newer carrier that is now just tied to the pier. Both crews of 6000 are still on the clock, as well as the thousands of others in the adjoining battle group ships. This is pure, diabolical political propaganda.

In addition, in order to make political points, we force thousands of military members to remain deployed beyond what they expected. How many of them will be forced to break promises, like….being there for a child’s birthday, a wedding, an anniversary or the birth of a child?

I had previously believed this president was a cunning politician who simply took liberties with the truth. Now I just don’t think he has a soul.

  • Mondobeyondo

The immediate reaction would be to say “It’s the politicians’ fault”. And in a sense, it is. But it’s our fault as well. We voted for them. We elected these fools into public office. No one forced us to vote for them. We chose so voluntarily.

Most people forget that politicians are a reflection of the American people, as a whole. .Is it representative of New Jersey, or Georgia, or California? Maybe not specifically. They had their own candidates and choices. Your candidate may have ran and failed to win. But the final result was (is, supposed to be) the voice of the nation, as a whole, as a union. At least, that’s what I learned in high school civics class, long long ago (1980).

You get the government you ask for.The majority asked for Obama for a second term. And now they have it. I didn’t vote for them, but I accept the results, bcause it was the opinion of the majority.

Okay now, where was I? Oh yeah, that sequester situation, and stuff such as.

Didn’t we go through this a month ago, more or less? And 2 months ago when we barely missed the last fiscal cliff? Quit changing the game .We all know how it’s played. What’s next? “Breaking News….March 31 2013.. U.S. Economy To Plunge if $5 Trillion Rescue Bill Fails Senate”….

Oh gosh. I picked a bad week to quit drinkng, smoking and amphetamines.*

We all know the future doesn’t very rosy.We can no longer depend on the government to look after us.There are many ways to prepare for the future. If you have a piece of land and can plant a garden and raise a few animals, you are in a good position. If you have it paid off, even better.
Consider bringing in extended family members that have some sort of income to share the land with you. These might be self employed or retired..or even disability benefits. The point is the more money coming the better.
If living in the country is not in the cards, you may consider doing what we did. We bought an old house that had been converted into 5 apt units. Our 4 young adult children each took one unit, and we took the fifth.
If that isn’t an option you may get together with friends, or simply rent out the other units.
An even simpler option is to rent/buy a large house and take in boarders.
There are so many ways to live free, or at least almost.
The other concern is our spending habits. I have decided to try very hard to not buy anything that is not made in our country.Try to make do with what you have, or buy secondhand. At least if the item is from overseas, it doesn’t get replaced on the store shelf.
Build up your pantry with food (not crap/junk food)
Rotate it to keep it fresh. Start learning how to can/preserve/dehydrate to take advantage of sales.
Even a small yard can grow a lot of food. Start researching how to do things yourself now.Make your own laundry detergent. You’ll be surprised how much information is available on the net.
Pay off your debt as fast as possible. With all the money you save, you may be able to take advantage of a house sale and pay cash.

  • 2Gary2

  • seb

YES WE kicked the CAN down the road !

  • Mustard Seed

Congress sure as heck didn’t blink an eye when they took over 17% of my husband’s pay this year. That is more than 7 times the amount of their stupid little sequester. Our taxes increased significantly, and congress CUT our military retiree family health care plan. Gone! 25 years of serving this country and congress just flips us the bird. What else did we expect from a government that labels its own vets as terrorists?

The thing is my husband expected it, and we prepared for it. Thanks to ECB and similar sites, our family of six will be okay, but there are thousands of vets out there who are hurting a lot more than we are.

We are no longer living the middle class life we once had. So be it. No matter what, we still have our family and our faith in God….the most important things in life.

You are absolutely right, Michael. When the people lose faith in their government, the government loses its ability to govern. America has just about reached that point in the timeline of history.

  • Ralfine

if you dont cut down on the war machine and keep blaming the unemployed for all your spending problems, you wont get anywhere, except the scrap heap.

stop buying bombs, ammo, fuel and missiles for defense.

let them use the available stuff for the DEFENSE of the country’s sovereignty.

cut the politicians salary to the level of nurses’ wages.

same for all government employees. if they dont like it, let them search for a job outside the government, or increase the wages of nurses and carers.

employ the army to protect the borders to stop the influx of illegal immigrants from canada, russia and mexico.

  • WarriorClass3

It’s the bankster cartel that wants the debt and they have the money to buy every politician in DC, and have been for as long as most of us have been alive.

Don’t blame Americans for the actions of the banksters that have taken the government by stealth and payoffs. If Americans are to blame for anything, it is for working so hard they didn’t notice what had been going on since before they were born. It’s not like they were taught anything in school.

  • WK

I have been seeing your warnings about this for years now, and yet life goes on. MIchael, you truly are either one of the most concerned people I have ever seen or the most negative or both.

Yeah, I don’t like seeing us accumulate debt and I think the sequester should be allowed to implement because the idiots who ‘run’ our country don’t know how to run our country, starting with Obama and all the way down. If something sells in PR and perception, it happens and it doesn’t matter if it defies common sense on how to have a checkbook.

I predict early on there will no be major fallout from the sequester. This stuff should have happened long ago and even if this isn’t the preferred format, at least it does not require Congress to actually do something (other than a photo op unveiling Rosa Parks, while I am not mocking that, it’s quite sad that’s the only time you will see Washington pols together any more).

Let the continuing resolution fail or delay, and let the debt be contentious this summer once more as it was in 2011. There are still too many working people and other Americans who simply do not have a clue on these issues or have apathy about them. Not only that, I will fault Obama for these manufactured crises. It shows he is a poor leader. He may have gotten reelected and I voted for him, but I have been less impressed with him since the 2012 election result than at any time before. He overplayed his hand only because he won. He did not win all that clearly, and his wife is more popular politically than he is. This is testimony to the absolutely poor level of leadership we have any more in the United States political realm.

The media needs to realize their scare message on the sequester is not working. Many citizens are tired of these crises. They may think the sequester should not have come to this, but they also tally low approval ratings for everyone in Washington DC, and Obama himself is slipping in support as well.

When true consensue can emerge once more about how to run things, I have confidence the politics will be set aside (as it was after 09/11 for a while). I truly miss the United States of America, I suspect we will never be truly united again.

  • Disgusted

I have only one thing to say, three years ago he (Obama) wanted it . He got it …… SIGNED IT IN TO LAW !!!!! Now it’s a bad idea ….. Get the picture

  • Mondobeyondo

Tick, tick, tick… here comes the sequester. Only about 18 hours to go! Woo-hooooo!

The choice is between short term pain and long term gain, or short term gain and long term pain. We all want to avoid pain, of course. But it’s going to hurt no matter what happens.

Sad thing is, the can’s been kicked so far down the road that the only realistic choice now, is short term gain and long term pain. Boost the economy for a few months, let the economy languish for the next 20 years. That’s if we actually survive that long.

Prepare to pay much more and get much less in return. It’s already happening. Go to your local grocery store. That example will be the norm.

    • Jodi

Yes, It’s true. I pretty much buy the same stuff I bought 10 years ago at the grocery store but now I’m paying much, much more. Sadly, people don’t care. I guess they will start to care when it hits them where it hurts.

  • Claire

So here’s a question about my situation I’d like advice on…. my family realizes the gov’t has us spiraling out of control and into a depression. We are trying to get prepared as quick as possible, yet there is always more to do/buy/learn. We do not have any credit card debt, car loans, student loans etc. Yet we have access to loans. We are working on growing more of our food and already have very lean expenses each month. This has allowed us to save food, ammo etc. with the extra money each month. So my questions…. is it worth it to get into credit card debt now to become better prepared or not? After all, the items we need to become self sufficient might not be available in 6 months. If the crash comes, what will happen to the credit card debt? I normally hate debt and don’t want to do this, but is it a good idea at this point/

    • K

I guess the answer would depend on what you need. If you have real needs, in water or food, then yes, a short term debt would be a good idea. In any other areas, are you sure you really need it? None of us will ever be as prepared, as we would like. Figure that no matter what happens, you will be paying back what you borrow. So I would not go further in debt, than what I could pay off in 6 months. Understand we could be down the drain by April. Or we might limp along for another couple of years..

  • Jodi

When a “day of reckoning” finally arrives, many debt addicts lose absolutely everything and end up in the street.
Yes, debt addicts deserve what they get but it’s to bad the spoiled cry baby brats in Washington won’t end up in the street.

That tells us what Washington really thinks about us. They know how to manipulate us. BUT look at all the libs and brain dead kids and people who don’t pay attention to what is happening to our country. They are stupid.

  • Hawaiianfive0

The sequester is just a game they are playing. This is just the beginning of all of the games that they will play. It is not what the press is making it to be or what the Whitehouse is making it out to be….they are spinning it like they did the fiscal cliff, but it will have consequences. It really is like a magic trick for Obama and his adminstration. Obama and adminstration are saying look what is being done with the Sequester, but don’t look at what we are doing elsewhere. The fact of the matter is the defense and federal agencies are already getting much less. Some cuts they are having to make are already because of reductions in their funding, which is not even due to the Sequester. The Sequester will just be another one that will reduce their money. The sequester’s affect on the deficit is 0%. They are spending more money and it is just being spent elsewhere. They say it is across the board cuts, but that is not so much the case. They are still going to pick and choose what they want to pour the money into. Obama has stated that he wants to put more in green energy and climate change, so we will see what happens with that.

We will be spending more in some areas and less than others and defense is going to take a serious hit. The overall government spending will not go down. Our government is so big and we have so many people working in that sector now, that it will have consequences on the economy. Some may be able to handle the reduction in pay or being unemployed for awhile, but there are many that will not be able to. There are not going to be any good jobs for these people to get. Also, they will not be able to spend as much and it will hurt businesses.

    Great article Michael—

The Democratic party is the “sky is falling” party BUT you are sooooo right that Republicans are every bit as guilty and have been for decades for doing the wrong thing legislatively and economically in America.

If we are to believe that Homeland Security is bi-partisan and protecting our nation then we are expected to believe that neither the democrats or republicans are aware of the gov. plan to collapse the economy and we are expected to believe that none of our politicians KNOW about Operation Thunderdome, the DHS plan to collapse our economy.

I personally am decades beyond believing any such thing. ALL this banter is just that. In the end they will do what will most hurt all of us.

My local news in Myrtle Beach is also profiling nightly concerns from all over the place about how this 2.4% cut IS GOING TO KILL their businesses or gov. benefits and it is just not true. The thing that makes me mad is that these people businesses and gov. agencies have no clue what is on the table on any given day in Washington. We know no one in Washington reads the bills so we civilians have failed to read them and it is about to do severe damage with the implementation of gov. healthcare.

The only way we will survive and turn things around in the next 4 years is IMPEACH BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA.
And if possible launch a major investigation into the criminal policies of HIS administration…..and indict those responsible.
It is my opinion that soon the house of cards that this so called man is made of, will come crashing down.
This may be the catalast that does it.
He has gotten a free ride for so long from the Lap Dog Media and Americans are starting to wake up and realize it.
Hopefully it is not too late.

  • Colin

I think more fundamentally the issue is that we have a government where one party is loath to work with another party. This one party stated that their one aim was to discredit the leader of the other party, and to obstruct that leader’s policies, thus forcing him out of office. Having failed that, this one party is set to turn the second term of this leader as our nation’s leader into a lame duck presidency several months in.

There has, always, been this animus between these two parties. However, this animus has become poisonous to our nation, and some people are beginning to ask, why is our nation deliberately self-injuring itself?

I find myself increasingly on shaky ground when I attempt to deduce the difference between real and perceived facts. One of those parities is citing facts from a well-supported and organized propaganda media machine (the right wing, not the left wing).

This nation is limping from one crisis to another. When we are face with a “real” crisis, will we be able to distinguish from these other “fake” crisises? I don’t have an answer for that one.

  • Hawaiianfive0

I may be facing furloughs too. I personally cannot afford to take another hit especially with the costs of everything going up. I just read recently that we are going to see record gas prices and energy costs are going up…thanks to Obama’s policies, so not only is he hurting everyone’s jobs, but everything is going up. The problem with this sequester is it is just a game and it is not paying the deficit down, they are actually just spending more in other areas, but the President decided that he wants to shove it to the working people in this country and reduce our standard of living. That’s what this is all about. It is not about trying to pay down the debt at all. It is was saving money or not borrowing money that would be one thing, but it’s not and so many will suffer for it. The sequester is just their typical show. Companies are already starting the layoff of workers in the defense area and some it isn’t just one day a week. There is one area that is getting hit with 30 continuous days. Obama’s wishes are coming true now.

    • Orange Jean

I’m sorry to hear that and I understand what you’re saying. The main reason I feel prepared is that for the past 4+ yrs I’ve felt like a ping-pong ball (CR 8 times in one of these years)… and fortunately I had the ability to do something about it… in part because I found a fairly cheap place to live (I just rent a house… easier to walk away from than anyone with a mortgage).

Are you in Hawaii then? That’s gotta be a very expensive place to live…

      • Hawaiianfive0

Yes, I am in Hawaii…very expensive and getting much worse. That’s good that you were able to find a cheaper place to live…that helps a lot. Wish we could find a cheaper place to live, but it’s hard to do that here. We were able to get into a cheaper place by Hawaii standards when everything started to crash four years ago. Now, we would be paying more for less if we left where we are. I rent too because it’s impossible to buy anything here. At least we are not tied into a mortgage either in case we do have to move on. It’s pretty scary. One reason we are still here is because my husband’s job is more secure here although I may be facing reduction in my job with furloughs. Seems like we cannot escape what is coming now. It’s hard to weigh what would be best. Even though we have been trying to prepare for awhile now it’s rough and it’s hard just to keep up with it. I can see how things are definitely speeding up. Also, so far it seems safer than on mainland…with all kinds of crazy stuff going on. Don’t get me wrong it happens here too, but not continuous violent crime. Don’t think I want to deal with that and it’s only going to get worse. We feel like we could be going to a worse situation, so we just have to try to stick it out, but it gets harder everyday.
I think a lot of people don’t understand is that some agencies already have faced lower funding…this is not something new and the sequester is just going to add to it even more. I guess we will see what happens…Isn’t it unbelieveable how they have dragged it out each year, so we have to spend one year budget in a few months…crazy. Good luck to you through all of this.

        • Orange Jean

Good luck to you too! We didn’t get written notice yet, but we have been told the “worse case” would be total of 1 day a week for 22 weeks. Some agencies don’t have as drastic # of days because of something to do with how much of the total their agency’s budget is in the first place and how much is personnel costs.

I used to date a guy from Hawaii who grew up dirt poor; I suspect there are some cheap places but like many of those places might come with very high crime rates.

At least (trying to look on the bright side)… you won’t have a bitterly cold (and expensive to heat) winters ahead of you as some will.

According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, this nation was in the birth pangs of austerity before the sequester deadline. This nation has witnessed the worst income drop in 20 years. Two causes are cited for this drop: the end of the payroll tax holiday and an overabundance of payment of dividends before the beginning of this year. See the illegals back and make the government pay for their own health care, and not get any pay. Where is it written when we voted them in that they get all the perks? Nowhere and who granted them authority to give themselves pay raises? No those who voted them in for sure. Cut their pay and with the illegals gone it will free up all the money that had been allotted to them. We cannot cut EMS, Fire, Police and most definitely NOT the Military. As I always ask those pointing out such problems. If you planned the destruction of country, could you plan it any better than what you see happening in America?

If one reads the Torah (Pentateuch for Christians) very carefully, looking past all the magic and mysticism will reveal all the essential elements of such planning. Simply replace god with the figurehead of a centralized planning administration and the meaning behind the stories becomes plainly evident.

The story of Sodom and Gomorrah is a classic example. Contrary to the accepted version, this is a story not about perversion but about natural resources, in this case water rights for Abraham’s herds.

“And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah” Gen. 13:10.

In exactly the same manner as Bush’s moral imperative to justify the attack on Iraq, “god” uses a moral imperative to justify the destruction of an entire people i.e. To a man, they are simply all evil, so they must all be destroyed. Obviously, Sodom’s water resource survived the Lord God’s holocaust exactly like the oil resources survived the wholesale destruction of Iraq.

Another example is the story of Babel, where the lord confuses the language of Nimrod’s people. No doubt callers using Babel’s phone system would hear their call prefaced with “Press one for Akkadian and two for Ugaritic.”

To anyone personally impacted by this, I can make the following suggestions for cutting your food budget (if you don’t already do this) – think “peasant food”:
    * PB & Jelly sandwiches (use good quality whole grain bread & peanut butter) – I know a family who had 10 kids, not a lot of money… mom made all the bread with their own ground wheat and all the kids were healthy

    * load up on fresh veggies
    * if there are things like berries you can pick where you live (especially wild ones, blueberries, blackberries, etc.) and you can get landowner’s permission (or if it’s your land) – yum!

    * try variations on grains and beans (for example: rice & beans … there are probably thousands of recipes worldwide)
    * overall cut down on meat & fish, but if its a must have in your house … try things like soups & stews with just a small amount of meat or fish in a rich meat or fish broth, loaded with veggies. Or try a smaller amount in some grain dish, like in Chinese food
    * cut all juices down with 1/2 water
    * skip soda, try about 1/3 juice + bubbly water of some type -> refreshing and much better for you

When my budget feels constrained I automatically go into “peasant food” mode, and have saved as much as 1/2 my grocery bill. I once actually had a party and feed something like 20 people on about (what was then) $3 of food. I made kapusta (Polish cabbage soup) with 1 head cabbage, 1 small can sauerkraut, 1 large onion, and a small handful of lima beans … and served it with pumpernickel bread and sour cream (you mix the sour cream with a little milk and dip the bread in it). Every one of my friends enjoyed it too!

    News flash!
Buy real seeds, buy back the silver and gold, drive less, party less outside, share a sandwich with someone in need, recycle everything yourself then sell it, and of course, you can’t forget the a bottle of brut champagne & a peace joint… Simple.

Big brother gets annoyed if we get lazy and depend on his leading…

  • I hear the concerns here, but would be more willing to listen to a ‘balanced’ view… the author goes on a tirade about us spending all this money in ‘give-aways’ to the poor, yet blatantly does not say a word about the obscene amount of money spent on military and 2 wars over the last decade.. let’s take an honest look at ALL gov’t spending..

just wanted to let you know, unsubscribed from your site, I’m one of those overpaid government employees that you go on and on about. I think your plan to pay us less is genious. Have the bright and educated people leave for industry. Then when industry submits their planes, medical devices, drugs, food products, safety innovation, have these reviewed by $30,000 per year kids out of high school. That will really move things along for industry and make us all safer. Take care.

  • I don’t have credits cards to deal with. I am on Social security and 73 yrs old and way, way less than a 1,000 a month to live on. Cutting spending is necessary if I want to live. Which means no washing machine to waste water, I scrub my clothes on a scrub board, even the quilts too at times. It is hard, but it can be done and have been doing it for 4 1/2 years now. Buy all my clothes at yard sales, and keep beans, oatmeal, rice and grits in jars to eat. I make my own soap and detergent to clean with. Have even used a reel mower at times for cutting grass but not all the time. So if people really need to , I am sure they will step up to the challenge like I had to.

shame on you! “just a little bit of money” are you real? i wasnt aware someone could speak so casually of people legitimately struggling everyday just to get by. a little bit of money is what over 90% of the population is trying to work with. you want to say american’s are whining and crying; trying passing any form of legislation that impacts even a minuscule amount of profits of the richest men and businesses in this country- then you’ll really see whiny, crying babies! but ya know, its just a little bit of money
