Crashing: Apple, Twitter, Oil, Commodities, Greek Stocks, Chinese Stocks

Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on Google+Share on LinkedInShare on StumbleUponEmail this to someone

Crash - Public DomainThe month of August sure has started off with a bang.  Tech stocks are crashing, oil is crashing, industrial commodities are crashing, Greek stocks crashed the moment that the Greek stock market reopened for trading, and Chinese stocks continue to crash.  At this point we have not seen a broad crash of U.S. stocks yet, but it is important to note that the Dow is already down more than 700 points from the peak in May.  If it continues to slide like it has in recent days, it won’t be too long before we will officially reach “correction” territory.  Just a few days ago, I described August as a “pivotal month“, and so far that is indeed turning out to be the case.

A full-blown financial crisis has not erupted yet, but we are well on the way.  In this article, I want to look at a few of the “crashes” that are already happening…

This is more of a “correction” than a “crash”, but it is very noteworthy because it is happening to one of the most important U.S. stocks of all.  The price of Apple stock has already broken through the 200 day moving average, and at this point it is down nearly 11 percent from the peak

Shares of Apple are down 10.9% from their highest point in a year — which places the stock squarely in what’s considered to be a correction. The unofficial definition of a correction is a 10% or greater drop from a recent high. Shares of Apple hit a 52-week (and all-time) high on $134.54 on April 28.

If you want to see a real crash, just look at what is happening to Twitter.  The stock was down close to 6 percent on Monday, and overall it has fallen 58 percent since early last year.  The price of Twitter stock has never been lower than it is right now, and many investors are very apprehensive about what comes next…

Twitter shares hit a record low on Monday, closing down nearly 6% to $29.27.

That is 58% below their peak in January 2014.

Shares have fallen to their lowest point since the company went public in November 2014 weighed down by negative comments on growth from company executives that rattled investors. Its previous low was $30.50 in May 2014 as concerns over slowing user growth began to take a toll.

Of course there are tech companies that are in far worse shape than Twitter.  For example, just consider what is happening to Yelp.  Shares of Yelp recently plummeted 25 percent in a single day, and they are down about 70 percent over the past year.

The Greek government was quite eager to reopen their stock market this week.

Perhaps they should have waited longer.

On Monday, we witnessed the greatest stock bloodbath in Greek history.  The following comes from Reuters

Greece’s stock market closed with heavy losses on Monday after a five-week shutdown brought on by fears that the country was about to be dumped from the euro zone.

Bank shares plummeted 30 percent before loss limits kicked in to stop investors selling any more. The main Athens stock index .ATG ended down 16.2 percent, recovering slightly after plunging nearly 23 percent at the open.

It was the worst daily performance since at least 1985 when modern records began, including a 15 percent fall when Wall Street crashed in 1987.

Puerto Rico

Things also continue to unravel for “America’s Greece”.  On Monday, a U.S. commonwealth territory defaulted on debt for the first time ever

Puerto Rico’s Government Development Bank announced Monday that it was only able to make a partial payment on its Public Finance Corporation (PFC) debt service due over the weekend.

In response to the non-payment of the full service, Moody’s said it viewed the situation as a default.

“Due to the lack of appropriated funds for this fiscal year the entirety of the PFC payment was not made today (the first business day after the Saturday deadline),” GDB President Melba Acosta-Febo said in a statement. This was a decision that reflects the serious concerns about the Commonwealth’s liquidity in combination with the balance of obligations to our creditors and the equally important obligations to the people of Puerto Rico to ensure the essential services they deserve are maintained.”

As I noted the other day, the Shanghai Composite Index declined 13.4 percent during the month of July.  It was the worst month for stocks in China since October 2009.

On Monday, Chinese stocks were down another 1.11 percent.  Since closing at 5,166.35 on June 12th, the Shanghai Composite Index has fallen precipitously.  As I write this, it is sitting at just 3622.86.

In the months prior to the financial crisis of 2008, the price of oil crashed hard.

Now it is happening again.

In July, the price of oil plunged 21 percent.  That was the worst monthly decline that we have seen since October 2008.

And on Monday, the oil crash continued.  The following comes from Business Insider

On Monday in New York, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude fell more than 4% and slipped below $45 per barrel, a level it hasn’t touched since March.

Brent crude oil, the international benchmark that joined WTI in a bear market last week, dropped more than 4%, below $50 per barrel for the first time since January.

In recent weeks, I have been writing over and over about industrial commodities.  This is yet another striking similarity to the last financial crisis.  In 2008, they started crashing before stocks did, and now it is happening again

We see the Bloomberg Commodities index now at a 13-year low. Copper is down 28 percent for the year, tin is down 30 percent, and nickel is down 44 percent.

This is a giant red flag that indicates that we are plunging into a deflationary cycle.  When global economic activity slows down, so does demand for industrial commodities.  I don’t understand why more people can’t see this.

I have been warning that a deflationary downturn was coming for a very long time, and so have others.  For instance, just consider the following excerpt from a recent article by Nicole Foss

Our consistent theme here at the Automatic Earth since its inception has been that we are facing a very powerful deflationary depression, following on from the bursting of an epic financial bubble. What we have witnessed in our three decades of expansion and inflation is nothing short of a monetary supernova, and that period has been the just culmination of a much larger upward trend going back many decades at least. We have lived through a credit hyper-expansion for the record books, with an unprecedented generation of excess claims to underlying real wealth. In doing so we have created the largest financial departure from reality in human history.

Bubbles are not new – humanity has experienced them periodically going all the way back to antiquity – but the novel aspect of this one, apart from its scale, is its occurrence at a point when we have reached or are reaching so many limits on a global scale. The retrenchment we are about to experience as this bubble bursts is also set to be unprecedented, given that the scale of a bust is predictably proportionate to the scale of the excesses during the boom that precedes it. We have built an incredibly complex economic system, but despite its robust appearance it is over-extended, brittle and fragile after decades of fueling its continued expansion by feeding on its own substance.

Things continue to line up in textbook fashion for a major financial crisis during the fall and winter.

I hope that you are prepared for what comes next.

  • There is not much to say anymore except for giving them facts and figures as you do Michael. Keep up the good work.

Apparently most prefer to live in lalaland, their head in the sand, with a nice and great normalcy fallacy bias… (this is true for Americans, Europeans, Asians and other alike – no difference here) as long as people are not personally touched by the problem I fear there will be no move… but that’s the whole point, to give the people the opportunity to avoid being touched by the problem… sad, sad , very sad.

What will follow is anyone’s guess, but I’m sure it will be a big megaquake followed by a surprise tsunami (economically speaking) – and we know what that brings…

    • Liberty First

Oh, we will all be touched, save the Elite. Check out Obama’s carbon regulation insanity…

  • SouthernbytheGraceofGod272

USA today was surprisingly(not) neutral or optimistic in its “Money” section today. There was an article on Puerto Rico and one that referred to about 25% of Americans have a negative view of the economy.

  • KirstyJason Menard

I’m afraid. For my family. My children, my grandparent’s. I’m trying to prepare, but I’m a bit late in the game. I just hope I have a little more time before this happens, and the people with their heads up their butts start to panic. I’ve never been more worried about a specific time as I am about these last few months of 2015. God bless and good luck friends.

    • K

If you have the time. The articles on this board, go quite a long ways back. Lots of good info.

    • Kirsty it is never really too late. The point is to have at least some time BEFORE the crisis hit. Although time is getting short, just focus as much as you can on what you can do. You will always be ahead of those who do not prepare at all… Have courage.

      • none

Fall and winter are a GREAT time to have a financial crisis.
I do agree with Michael on that. Less people standing around protesting in the streets. I

Be patient and think through what you do before you do it. Many decisions made in haste you will regret.

      • You have till December 18, 2015…I give you the date…..The market crash and civil war will not get most humans…Its the pure force of darkness that will…

        Here is the TIP…

Stay away from Power Source, Chips, Microprocesors, Mobile Phones, TV, Internet after December 18..

In short Stay away from anything that runs on Electrical Power

Stay around Trees…Hug the trees when it begins…We are all Alien to this planet every moving thing is…Mother earth makes only TREES and Plants…That’s her vibration…

We were all in Mars and this force destroyed it using us…now we are doing the same to earth…

This battle is really between Planetary Souls and other things….We are mere Power Chords to suck energies from planets they destroy.

That force of darkness is the Fu Devil Monster and Fu Mean Nap Animal Monster from hell. Thoes creatures are the problems not people.

A big part of preparing isn’t necessarily acquiring goods but gaining knowledge and information on how to survive after a collapse. How to gather food, which is poisonous or not, how to find or make items to filter water, all about barter systems, how to garden, etc. a quick YouTube or Google search along the lines of “how to prepare for economic collapse” or something similar will set you off on the right path.

A good recommendation I’ve seen on here about stocking up on food is to buy a few cans of assorted items (meats, vegetables, fruit etc) every time you go shopping so that it doesn’t increase your bill by too much. Once you have enough stocked up, make sure you use the items before its due date and replace the item next time you go shopping.

      Hope that gets you started.

Make sure you do your utmost to get as far away from the cities in your area as you possibly can. Once the point of no return is passed giant hordes will form. They’ll run amok and eventually become cannibals. Anyone caught in one of the cities will become their prey, you’d need several Maxim guns and tens of thousands of rounds to hold them off. I suggest you read the Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion if you want to find out who has done this to you and everyone else, and why.

The best prepping Kristy is to place your faith and trust in Jesus. He will rescue us just like he did Lot and his family and Noah and his family. The rapture is real. Read the Bible. The book of John and Romans are the best place to start to connect with Jesus as your Savior. He becomes your advocate to a Holy righteous Father.Trust me! Be blessed! The tribulation is going to be the worst time this planet has ever experienced and it is coming soon but the church will be removed if you are saved! Best prep is “oil in your lamp”

        • El mico

And when that doesn’t happen what will you do?

By the way, i don’t think it was jesus that rescued Noah.

          • WVBORN56

Jesus wont save you from being killed or your wife/childrens being raped or sold as sex slaves. As much as i appreciate spiritual comfort it wont help much in physical danger.I would be wise to stock up with few guns, friends/family members and hope for the best but prepare for worst.jesus wont help you this time …

          • KirstyJason Menard

I do agree with you. We need to arm and protect ourselves. I’ve seen and experienced far to much physical abuse to believe that God can stop those that want to cause you harm from doing so.

      • KirstyJason Menard

Fortunately I don’t live too close to a city, but I do live in a small town with a lot of questionable people in it. I’m trying to map out my location so that I can figure the best routes routes to take when a hell breaks loose.

    • KCTed

Stock up on 90+ days of food, water and daily essentials. When currency crashes, everyone scrambles for a reset. The Weimer Republic crashed for 6 months in 1919 and was one of the worse. Their paper money was used to start fireplace and cook over fires it was so worthless. However, they started the reset 6 months in, and leveled in in just over 90 days.
Cases of generic canned veggies are $8 or so. Canned tuna and other meats can be bought cheap in bulk. Rice is good because it doesn’t require as long cook times as dried beans. Oatmeal is also cheap and nutritious. Canned fruit (no syrup) is cheap as generic. 1 gal jug water is really cheap to, generic in 4 one gallon cases.
36 roll packs of toilet paper is cheap at big box stores. Soap, toothpaste,, etc,, the same.
If you have friends or relatives in rural areas, talk to them. Ask if you are welcome if you bring all your own supplies.
If nothing bad happens, you can still use all of those basic foods and stuff. If things start looking shaky, keep your car topped off with gas all the time. Keep your supplies tidy and ready to load up, if you need to leave. It’s not paranoia or tin foil hat, it’s just wise. You can stock up cheaply if you buy carefully. Forget Doomsday Prepper shows, it would probably not go down like that. The powers that be won’t let it set long, because they have too much to lose.

      • jakartaman

That’s been done! I am not sure after 90 days the store shelves will be full? To be save you should have a means of perpetual food supply- like growing your own and being near a clean water source. Animals chickens, rabbits etc is another good cheap investment.

Good luck my friends – be one with your GOD

    • James Little

there are multiple people saying the crash is near! people keep talking about the shemitah cycles and the blood moons and i would usually dismiss such religious mumbo jumbo….however it seems like we always have an economic crash during the blood moons and shemitah cycles! and we are right on course for another blood moon shemitah cycle! and that cycle comes by the end of 2015! lindsey williams said the eocnomic crash will start this fall and continue onward into the future as a full blown global economic depression! start preparing now! what happened to greece is likely what will happen to america, possibly even worse since america has more debt than greece! stock up on food and water, get your currency out of the bank, buy gold and silver! get out of debt! do what you can to prepare! we only have 3 months left! best of luck to you homie

    • justacommnet

Don’t worry I felt the same way back in 2011 after I started reading blogs like this one. I felt like I was too late in the game myself and that was 4 years ago. Each year since has just shown up and gone and so far so good. Regardless its never to late to be prepared for the worst but hope for the best.

If you were a reborn water baptized holy spirit Christian you wouldn’t fear anything except God and obey Him. You’d know heaven is real and this world is temporary.

      • KirstyJason Menard

I have never been baptized, this is true. I think everyone, even those baptized still have fear inside of them. I have never met a human in my time that didn’t have some sort of fear, other than God himself. It is a natural feeling that comes when you have other natural feeling. Love, sadness, happiness, fear. You cannot have one without the other. And I have love for my family, so I fear that they can be hurt or something else.

        • William H Merritt

You want to restore that Love between yourself and Jesus, ,it’s always a good idea to listen to your brethren in Christ. One person that comes to mind is Francis Chan. If you are right with God and you love Jesus with all your heart, mind and soul than you will rejoice when he comes back to take his bridegroom. It’s judgment for those that don’t follow the WORD but Jubilee for those that do.

  • Jorma

Michael – can you do article on what we can expect to see in a deflationary crash. I get the hyper side of it, is it possible that we get a deflationary death spiral WITH a hyperinflation twist included?

    • Liberty First

Some believe that – pray it is not the case.

  • Nick Tubber

I agree that there is a deflationary force in play here but I just don’t know if the collapse will happen. Don’t get me wrong, I am prepared within my capability. Just that I am not convinced it’s imminent until I see it.

    • Marco

You’re not alone. Healthy skepticism is always good. No one knows for sure if it will or won’t happen, or how or when, but good idea to be prepared in case it does. Just because it happens to other countries doesn’t mean it’ll happen to yours. Likewise, just because it doesn’t happen in some well-off countries doesn’t mean it won’t happen in yours.

Every empire fails. Even the strongest ones. But before they collapse, some last upwards of 2000 years.

    • Liberty First

We are going to see some bad stuff. Not the zombie apocalypse, but far worse than our generation has known.

Don’t neglect the spiritual prep. When fear, confusion, depression, doubt, anxiety are everywhere –

    – the peace of God, which passes all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
    – Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;
Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.
A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.

If you have Jesus, you have everything.

        • Jerry C

God is logical. Since you’re illogical, He will ignore you.

  • Harbinger

You don’t have to be a genius to figure out the the financial collapse has already occurred; it is just now starting to rear its ugly ahead. It happened around the end of March and we are just now starting to see the results from that. Things are going to be difficult in the months ahead, the key is to remain calm and think through your decisions before you allow panic to set in. Unfortunately some people are still in denial. It’s like the ant and the grasshopper, the ant worked hard all summer preparing for the winter and the grasshopper did nothing except relax and have fun. Winter came and the grasshopper begged the ant for help. In the end the grasshopper died and the ant survived. The same analogy can be applied to people. No matter how many times you warn them, they fail to make preparations, until it’s too late. That’s where civil unrest comes in. Good luck to all those you feel we are too big fail.

In our hospital group we have seen a HUGE increase in elderly Puerto Rican admissions on our census. One adult child of an admit to our substance program said – point blank that she and her husband as well as many others fear for their parents and are flying them here. This family literally took out a second mortgage to self pay for at least a month of “treatment”. Our ER is swamped with them. The woman said that they saw the treatment of the elderly in Greece last month and would rather the parents be here to “weather the storm”. Crazy. Drain our resources. No wonder why Obama isn’t helping them as this seems to work to their advantage. More votes.

Looking at a three month chart of the DOW It seems like it wants to correct but something just keeps pumping it up. There’s no fundamentals to support the over-valuation. It really is amazing the number of people who either don’t know what is happening, or don’t care. When you hear people talking about retiring in 5, 6, or more years, and having the house paid off by then, and the car, and one thing and another, you just want to grab them by the shoulders and give them a good shake and scream, “it’s not going to happen!” But, I don’t. I see it coming from so many directions, there really is no where to go but up. Keep the reports coming Micheal. I try to pass them along.

“Turning and turning in the widening gyre
    The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
    Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
    The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
    Are full of passionate intensity…..”
“The Second Coming”, William Butler Yeats

Apple – done, with the death of Steve Jobs. Nothing new coming out (the watch is a bust). No surprise. Same with Twitter – not a value, no lasting innovation, a trend (much like My Space… Ship has sailed). Greece, Puerto Rico – predictable, as is much of the leveraged countries living on interest payments and a rising principle, matter of time till the bill can’t be paid. Commodities is the one people overlook and potentially the worst harbinger of the future – commodities are world-wide and affect all of us directly because we all use the products described. If these begin to circle the drain (and I believe Michael is right here), the groan of 2008 will be worse this time since governments have “stimulized” all they have…. Get out of debt, learn the difference between want and need, and live a minimalist life. In the near future, you may not have a choice.

I smell a hasbara troll. Anyhow to paraphrase Henry Ford the Protocols fit in with what is going on. They are 110 years old and they have fitted the world situation up to this time. They fit it now. At any rate let us leave the Protocols to one side and quote a few others who may be more convincing. Rabbi Ovadia Yosef for one said the following “Why are Gentiles needed? They will work, they will plough, they will reap. We will sit like an effendi and eat. That is why Gentiles were created.” We have to recognize that Jewish blood and the blood of a goy are not the same thing.” Rabbi Yitzhak Ginsburg, New York Times 6th of June 1989, page 6. I could go on and on, but will leave it at this for now.

That should read page 5 above. Sorry for the error. As I’ve had to write this correction I may as well add another gem; ” When a Jew murders a Gentile there will be no death penalty. What a Jew steals from a Gentile he may keep.” Sanhedrin 57a, this is from their “holy book”. “All Gentile children are animals.” Yebamoth 98a. I know they don’t all of them believe in these teachings, but it can’t be denied that such doctrines have formed Jewish culture and continue to exert a powerful influence even over irreligious Jews. Just as a modern Italian may be a neo-pagan yet still make the Sign of the Cross while passing a church out of habit, so the visceral antipathy to the goyim remains even among those who never set foot in a synagogue.

We should all be growing hemp, right? It can provide food, fuel, fiber and shelter. And it has also been used as medicine for millennia. The problem is that the government will take your house and your possessions if you grow it via civil asset forfeiture. So, the government and the central banks have created the problem, and have also prevented the solution by threat of prosecution and imprisonment. The government, which was setup to be our servant, has become our master, serving the very wealthy few.

stock your freezer? How long will the electricity be on? For that matter, will fresh water be available in urban areas?

it’s going to be one heck of a “market correction”…time is shorter than most think…

Stocks always fall much faster than they rise, and they can only ever go down 100%.

Apple… Yes Steve is dead. What is left for them to do?
They introduce a new iPhone every 9 months.
The iPod is a thing of the past. No one needs a stand alone music player
    Desktop PCs are fading away
Tablets are replacing Lap Tops for simple daily tasks, so no need to refine the Mac Book line
    Apple TV went nowhere fast

If the iWatch was a stand alone product, they would not be able to keep up with demand, yet they tied it the iPhone and that’s why it failed.

Me thinks they are running out of ideas.

I wrote this on a first generation iPad. I have no reason to upgrade.

Learn to can (Mason Jars) your food.

Buy a dehydrator and use it! My market had green and yellow peppers on sale for fifty cents a pound. I bought about ten pound I cleaned them, cut them, removed the seeds and set them aside for drying and future planting and dehydrated the peppers. They are now in vacuum sealed Mason Jars, where they will do just fine for years to come.

Additionally learn to make beef jerkey. It’s actually very easy. Vacuum seal it and you have beef with no need for freezing. Start with London Broil and have your butcher cut it very thin, they can always cut it better than you ever will.

    Nicole Foss is spot on!

All will be just fine when stocks return to proper fair value at about 80% below where they are presently trading.
