Electromagnetic Pulse: One Day We Will Wake Up In An America Without Electricity And Society Will Totally Break Down

Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on Google+Share on LinkedInShare on StumbleUponEmail this to someone

Electromagnetic Pulse - Public DomainWhat would you do if the power grid went down and never came back up?  One of these days, and it could be a lot sooner than most people think, we will all wake up in a country without electricity.  And considering how utterly dependent we have become on technology, that is a very frightening scenario to consider.  How would Americans react if nothing worked?  Just imagine a world where everything electronic is dead.  I am talking about lights, cell phones, computers, televisions, ATMs, heating and cooling systems, credit card readers, gas pumps, cash registers, refrigerators, hospital equipment etc.  When the power goes out for a few hours, that can be a major inconvenience, but what if it went out all over the nation and it didn’t come back on for months or even years?  This is one of the greatest potential threats that the United States is facing, and yet very few people are even talking about it.

An electromagnetic pulse attack could potentially send our nation back to the 1800s in a single moment, but very few of us are equipped to handle life without technology.  Tech guru John McAfee recently wrote an article in which he expressed his belief that 90 percent of the population would be dead within 2 years of such an attack

Experts agree that an all out cyber attack, beginning with an EMP (electromagnetic pulse) attack on our electronic infrastructure, would wipe out 90% of the human population of this country within two years of the attack. That means the death of 270 million people within 24 months after the attack.

You may think that is an unreasonably high estimate, but it turns out that it is the exact same number that the EMP Commission used in their report to Congress back in 2008

What would a successful EMP attack look like? The EMP Commission, in 2008, estimated that within 12 months of a nationwide blackout, up to 90% of the U.S. population could possibly perish from starvation, disease and societal breakdown.

In 2009 the congressional Commission on the Strategic Posture of the United States, whose co-chairmen were former Secretaries of Defense William Perry and James Schlesinger, concurred with the findings of the EMP Commission and urged immediate action to protect the electric grid. Studies by the National Academy of Sciences, the Department of Energy, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and the National Intelligence Council reached similar conclusions.

So what has Barack Obama done to protect us from such an attack?

Absolutely nothing.

But there are others in the government that are very, very concerned about this threat.  For example, NORAD recently moved back into Cheyenne Mountain, and the potential for an EMP attack was given as the primary reason for the move

The Pentagon is moving the headquarters for the North American Aerospace Defense Command (Norad) back into Cheyenne Mountain near Colorado Springs, Colo., a decade after having largely vacated the site.

Why the return? Because the enormous bunker in the hollowed-out mountain, built to survive a Cold War-era nuclear conflict, can also resist an electromagnetic-pulse attack, or EMP. America’s military planners recognize the growing threat from an EMP attack by bad actors around the world, in particular North Korea and Iran.

An EMP strike, most likely from the detonation of a nuclear weapon in space, would destroy unprotected military and civilian electronics nationwide, blacking out the electric grid and other critical infrastructure for months or years. The staggering human cost of such a catastrophic attack is not difficult to imagine.

For years, most experts have assumed that an EMP attack would be conducted by exploding at least one nuclear weapon high up in our atmosphere.  And that could definitely happen someday.  But now governments all over the world are working on other ways to deliver an EMP strike, and many of them do not involve nuclear weapons at all.

The U.S. government is among those that have been doing this kind of research.  The U.S. Air Force now reportedly has the capability to conduct an EMP assault against individual buildings or power stations.  The following comes from the Daily Mail

For years, scientists have been attempting to create such a weapon as part of Champ, or the Counter-electronics High-powered microwave Advanced Missile Project.

Now, the US Air Force claims it has advanced the technology, and says it can deploy it using the stealthy Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile-Extended Range (JASSM).

There are fears a well targeted attack could knock out multiple power stations.

‘This technology marks a new era in modern-day warfare,’ said Keith Coleman, CHAMP program manager for Boeing Phantom Works.

And we also know that Russia, China, Iran and North Korea have also been developing EMP weapons.  This next excerpt comes from DefenseNews

The possibility of man-made EMP events has grown in tandem with the technological sophistication of America’s adversaries. It is widely known that both Russia and China already have this capability, and both countries have carried out serious work relating to the generation of EMP in recent years as part of their respective military modernization programs.

Now, rogue states Iran and North Korea may not be that far behind. Iran, for example, is known to have simulated a nuclear EMP attack several years ago using short-range missiles launched from a freighter. North Korea, meanwhile, has acquired the blueprints to build an EMP warhead, and in July of 2013, a North Korean freighter made it all the way to the Gulf of Mexico with two nuclear capable missiles in its hold.

Why are these other nations developing these technologies?

To use them against us someday of course.

Many are particularly concerned about what Iran has been doing.  In a piece for an Israeli news source, author Dr. Peter Vincent Pry explained that Iranian military documents actually discuss conducting such an attack against the United States…

Iranian military documents describe such a scenario–including a recently translated Iranian military textbook that endorses nuclear EMP attack against the United States.

Thus, Iran with a small number of nuclear missiles can by EMP attack threaten the existence of modernity and be the death knell for Western principles of international law, humanism and freedom.  For the first time in history, a failed state like Iran could destroy the most successful societies on Earth and convert an evolving benign world order into world chaos.

And it wouldn’t take much to completely disrupt electricity generation in America.  In a previous article, I discussed a Federal Energy Regulatory Commission report which made the following jaw dropping statement…

“Destroy nine interconnection substations and a transformer manufacturer and the entire United States grid would be down for at least 18 months, probably longer.”

Are you starting to get the picture?

We are far more vulnerable than most people realize.

And even if we are never attacked by an EMP weapon, scientists tell us that it is inevitable that a massive solar storm will produce a similar result someday anyway.  Back in 1859, a massive solar storm that came to be known as “the Carrington Event” fried telegraph machines all over Europe and North America.

NASA says that there is a 12 percent chance that a similar solar storm will hit us within the next ten years, and if that happens the consequences will be absolutely catastrophic…

NASA is warning that there’s a 12 percent chance an extreme solar storm will hit Earth in the next decade, sending out massive shock waves that would knock out grids across the world.

The economic impact of this doomsday scenario could exceed $2 trillion — or 20 times the cost of Hurricane Katrina, according to the National Academy of Sciences.

I don’t know why more people aren’t concerned about this.  There are things that the federal government could do to harden our electrical grid, but they aren’t doing them.

This is a foreseeable danger, but our “leaders” are not taking it seriously.

And even if nobody ever purposely attacks us, scientists insist that it is only a matter of time before the sun unleashes an electromagnetic pulse that fries our electronics.  In fact, we have had some very close calls in recent years.  The following is an excerpt from a book that I co-authored with Barbara Fix entitled “Get Prepared Now“…

Most people have absolutely no idea that the Earth barely missed being fried by a massive EMP burst from the sun in 2012 and in 2013. And earlier in 2014 there was another huge solar storm which would have caused tremendous damage if it had been directed at our planet. If any of those storms would have directly hit us, the result would have been catastrophic. Electrical transformers would have burst into flames, power grids would have gone down and much of our technology would have been fried. In essence, life as we know it would have ceased to exist – at least for a time. These kinds of solar storms have hit the Earth many times before, and experts tell us that it is inevitable that it will happen again.

It amazes me that such a small percentage of the population is taking this threat seriously.

An electromagnetic pulse could bring down our entire society in a single moment at any time, and all of the experts assure us that it will happen someday.

But our politicians are just sitting on their hands and most Americans mock the idea that we need to be concerned about this.

So what do you think?  Please feel free to add to the discussion by posting a comment below…

I think the population writ large is overrun with various disaster potentials. Numbness. I imagine the 1% have taken measures to protect themselves. Everyone else is on their own. If you have the cash, then flee to New Zealand, Costa Rica or someplace else. Whoever uses the weapon though will likely use it elsewhere. North Korea is a good potential user. I suspect they have hardened their critical sites. Small country. Few decision makers. Getting a decision in the USA is almost impossible now. Luck to all.

    • K2

So you want people to just uproot their careers, families, lives and just flee to newzealand?

      • RoseCZena

No! We need to stay put and meet this or any other event head on!
Back during the Cuban Missile Crisis my father was in the National Guard and he wanted to desert and run to Canada. My mother took a chair to his head and said we are not cowardS or deserters! Our family does not run! We fight and we serve! That has always stayed with me!

        • Mike Smithy

It’s time for a moment of intellectual honesty. Fight and serve for whom? Are you suggesting that we fight for the bankster cabal and sacrifice our sons and daughters for the purpose of enhancing bankster profits by fighting a fabricated false flag war?

  • Jerry Loy

Thank you mike. Godfearing people are listening. God will not be mocked…

    • TK

      +1 Word

  • Chuck

This is much ado about nothing. There will never be an emp weapon used because there are really no emp weapons to use. And besides if we did get bombed back to 1800 what a great way to solve the illegal immigration problem.

    • robert

I am afraid you are wrong on the existence of such weapons. They do exist and the physics involved is very much real. A big weapon can generate as much as 50,000 volts per square meter over a large area. Police already have weapons that can disable a moving vehicle. That is an emp weapon also known as a Directed Energy Weapon. You can google that and get information. I imagine some Japanese generals said about what you did when they got word of the first atomic bomb use. Cheers.

    • RoseCZena

Wrong! Any nuclear device detonated at high altitude can cause an EMP event. All it would take is a cargo ship off the coast of North America launching one over our heads.

  • Sam

This really is the most likely of all events that could happen.. whether man made or natural; this is not speculation nor fear mongering; it is very, very real. If this was to occur during the winter; it would not take 1 year for 90% of the population to die.. it would only take a few months.

  • Peter

    I call this BS
Military equipment is shielded from an EMP they will work fine. Not all of the infrastructure will go down either, critical sites are protected.A lot of equipment will still work because they are older (no computer) or just simply shielded because of where it was located. EMP blasts are local not nation wide. Some thing larger like a solar one could be nation wide although at best it can only effect half the globe. Yes this would be massively disruptive, but hardly the end of the world.

    • robert

I do not find any comfort in knowing my family will be living in the dark while the local air force base is all lit up assuming they are getting power from somewhere other than the national grid. Studies that have been conducted that reveal a lot of “what-if” scenarios on survivability of various systems and impact on the population. There are many variables. It really does not take much to impact a population especially in an urban environment. Society breaks down quickly. One of the major challenges is replacing burned out transformers. Replacing a few is one thing. Replacing possibly thousands is too hard to do.

    • alan

Power lines and lower frequency radio would take a hit. Most modern equipment has build in shunts for surges. Strong enough pulse would still cause damage. Just like anything, the closer you are the worse it is.

    • RoseCZena

All it would take is for the power grid along the eastern seaboard to get taken out for only a short time and this country would be brought to its knees. That and the long haul trucks would stop running and you would have stores emptying out in a matter of hours with no hope of restocking.
Hospitals would immediately lose power and people would start to die very quickly.
The people who run out of food and supplies would start banding together and will go door to door to take what you have. Hungry people get desperate. And, think about all the people in this country who depend on psych drugs and those who are addicted to various drugs. Take away the supply and watch what happens. I suggest that you read “One Second After” a book written by Military Historian Dr William Forstchen. This book describes what will happen to the USA if we ever get hit by an EMP. This book has been presented on the floor of Congress I believe .

      • Peter

Do you remember the Blackout of August 14, 2003 where 50 million people across eight states and Ontario were without power up to four days.. I do…and that was not the end of the world either. Hospitals have back up generators that should work fine. Trucks will be on the road, well the military ones, and as for the others. It wont take long to get them running again. You sound like those nutters that said that computers will die in Y2K

The Economic Collapse Blog Has Issued A RED ALERT For The Last Six Months Of 2015.

    Published 6/25/2015.

    86 days until 12/31/2015.

Lets do a count down until the end of 2015 and see just what happens.

    By Michael S, on July 31st, 2015.

“AndI kind of appreciate the countdown. It reminds people of my warning, and perhaps it will give some readers a renewed sense of urgency”.

    • David Waddle

I guess since the stock market won’t cooperate and collapse we have to focus on something else.

      • alan

We are in a long and deep decline. The effect will be the same as a collapse but over 20 years. However any black swans could very likely bring about a disaster very quick.

      • RoseCZena

Have you not been paying attention? The stock market has been dropping everyday and even though it recovers a little at the end of each day many 401Ks are getting hammered. Peoples retirement savings are being wiped out.

        • Alwaystomorrow

          Not mine, Change your Investments.

  • sue

    Desperate article. Red Alert worries.

Most Americans are Hollywood Brain Dead and cannot deal with the Facts, Truths, and Reality of Electromagnetic Pulse Attacks ! Most Americans cannot handle the Authentic Real World !
Most American only dignify the Hollywood Movies and Disneyland Movies !

    • K2

What do the scientists say is the possibility of an EMP pulse happening from the sun?

      • Mike Smithy

In 1859 a solar storm enveloped Earth and wiped out telegraph services. If we were to experience a similar event today, economists estimate that the price tag would run somewhere around 1.5 trillion dollars to remedy.

        • Priszilla

That’s about the price of the Iraq war?

          • Gay Veteran

the price of our war of aggression is MUCH more than $1.5 trillion

        • K2

You didnt answer my question, how possible it is to happen again?

      • Diamond_Jim

“NASA is warning that there’s a 12 percent chance an extreme solar storm will hit Earth in the next decade”

    • Evan Elliott

      So sad, but so true

  • VigilanteCaregiver

    WOW! That’s screwed!

I’m not worried, though – built my own power station. The transformer was surprisingly easy to build as it’s mostly magnet wire coils with a gap between ’em. The power plant was a lot easier in theory: in practice it was quite time consuming to construct as I had to build the 11 kW alternators (wrapped each magnet with magnet wire in just the right pattern with just the right number of passes). Hooked ’em all to a small CNG motor. The hardest part was the charge controller: had to build it custom. The power comes from the methane digester (also homemade) fed by rabbit manure.

For a simpler version of my system: first dismantle your old lawn mower or buying a used mower from Deseret Industries; attach motor to a base and add a pulley wheel to the spindle; next obtain a few good automotive alternators, attach to base, and connect a drive belt between each alternator and finally the motor; wire a charge controller between alternator and batteries; test and use. Need a conversion kit if running off propane or CNG. Could work off a wood gasifier. These alternators will also work off a propeller as a wind turbine. They should be workable after EMP attacks.

For homemade batteries: get together 18 soda cans, 18 small copper rods (1/4″ pipe works well), electrical tape, silicone adhesive, a wooden box, bleach and water, electrical solder and plenty of wire. First, drill a 15/64 hole on top of each can. Line up the cans inside the box so there’s an air gap between each can. Attach each to box with the silicone. Next, lower the copper into the 15/64 hole with tape around the copper so it won’t touch the aluminum at all, even on the bottom. Solder a wire to the top of a copper rod and connect the other end to the soda can next to it – follow this pattern for each can so that one end has only one wire attached to copper, the other end to aluminum – each can has only one wire attached to copper and aluminum each. Fill with a mixture of 1:10 bleach to water. Be sure to use a charge controller when using.

Also look into building a faraday cage. We have one for the backups and cell phones.

    • Alwaystomorrow

What will you be powering up after an EMP attack?

      • VigilanteCaregiver

Light bulbs, stove, heater, spares electronic devices in the faraday cage…

I like backups for the backups.

        • Alwaystomorrow

          At least consider simplicity.

If you must have 110 AC,simple solar panel, storage batteries, true sine wave Inverter

Even simpler stick to 12V DC (solar panel, storage batt.) for necessities, light etc.

I have the first set up just as a hobby, because I like that kind of stuff. Not the slightest concerned about EMP issues.

          • VigilanteCaregiver

Simplicity is fine when one wishes for mere survival. I’m going for thriving.

        • John Noyb

Big problem is not letting anyone else see that you have power! You’ll be the target.

          • VigilanteCaregiver

            Counting on it!

How hard was it to design and build this monster? Answer: not hard at all. The alternators were easy since the plans came from Practical Action; they did all the hard work. Found a good motor locally (they gave me a $100 discount for an endorsement of their service and products – which was good, anyway!) The components are standard sizes: available at any hardware and electronics shop in the nation.

All the neighbors have printed copies of my machinery and systems’ plans and blueprints. They can do anything and everything I can.

Will others come? Yes. And we’ll be ready to absorb whoever we can and rebuild.

          • alan

Exactly. Need to watch that. Also telling neighbors you prep too. Snipers can be hell even if they are a bad shot.
I figure Mormons will be the first to get looted.

        • RoseCZena

Two is one and one is none! Preppers motto.

    • RoseCZena

      Very good advice Vigilante!

  • CharlesH

There isn’t anything you or me can do if an EMP attack or solar flare zaps our entire power grid. There is something our government could do but since they’ve already been informed about it and haven’t done anything (to our knowledge). I think 90% of Americans would die within the 1st year – not two. Complete pandemonium would take over and there is nothing any government (federal, state, local) could do to stop it. It literally would be every man, woman and child for themselves. God forbid.

    • Patrick Grimes

“I think 90 percent of Americans would die within the first year.” I agree, the two year time frame sounds optimistic.

  • GSOB

It’s not that big of a threat, alone. It has to be utilized as part of a multipronged attack. Otherwise, it’s just temporary.

  • Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof……..
And I looked, and behold a pale green horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.
    And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;
For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand? And the seven angels which had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound……. : And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood; And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.

      • alan

LOL! I say feed them some long pork.

      • RoseCZena

Agreed! Pets turning on you and having you for lunch? Good grief! Pets are good to have around. like another commenter said they can provide emotional support and can alert /protect if intruders come around.

    • robert

And then appendicitis strikes a family member or a case of c difficile. There are some problems that are unsolvable without specialized knowledge and equipment. A group effort is needed in any serious survival scenario. All of the items you listed will run out or breakdown. Sounds like the best thing is for a group to take over a Walmart and defend it. I grew up in a time when most every household had a garden, a coal fired fireplace, some chickens. But, there was still electricity. I do not think for a moment that we truly appreciate on demand energy and water. However bad we might imagine it to be, it will be a lot worse. Just from an emotional aspect if nothing else. There will be, I think, more mental breakdowns before physical ones. The British immediately slaughtered family pets when war was declared on Germany. It was unnecessary. A beloved pet can provide emotional support during a crisis. For my part, my dog will share whatever rations I have available. Cheers.

    • K2

Woah woah waoh calm down. Dont get carried away. US and for that matter any country doesnt have the danger of getting attacked by an EMP pulse, from another country. Dont waste your money worrying about everydamn thing. Stock up on essentials, buy a gun, but dont go too far in that you end up wasting tons of money.

    • alan

I will feed my dog long pork! There will be an over abundance of long pork running around.

    • RoseCZena

I suggest that everyone one real James Wesley Rawles books on prepping. His book “How to Survive the End of the World as We Know it” is very helpful for anyone wanting to prep. Also, the good old Mother Earth News offers a lot of sane, rational advice for sustainable living/living off the grid.
And, by the way, wax candles only go so far. I suggest getting solar battery rechargers they work very well. I have used mine for years.

Israel is more likely to use an EMP against the US and other nations.

    • John Noyb

My guess is they will use an EMP against Iran as the first wave of an assault on thier nuclear program.

    • K2

Wrong. Israel wont use against US,nor will any other country use it against US. Israel because its an ally and a friend, and other countries wont because US can bomb them back to the stone age if they use it against US.

    • RoseCZena

We are their only ally in the world even though thanks to the Obama Administration that alliance has been made weaker. Israel is literally surrounded by countries that want to destroy them, so they pretty much have their hands full.
There is nothing in it for them to take us out. We also provide them with a lot of military equipment and aid so they would be literally biting off the hand that feeds them .

  • John

Wow, 90% of the population in the U.S. dead – isn’t that what Agenda 21 calls for – at least a 90% reduction in world population?

    • alan

Won’t happen in the south so much. Power goes off who cares.

      • HeyAHuman

        South pole?

      • folgers22

You can’t imagine what it would be like. EVERYTHING goes. No TV, no cell, no pace makers, no cars, no planes, no refrigerator, not even solar (panels work, all else is fried), no watches, no calculators, no nuthin. For those of us in the South, No NASCAR, no moonpies, no Pepsi, no Walmart, no Sonic’s, no laser sights or holo sights, no motorcycles, no Myrtle Beach, and no iced tea.

        • Diamond_Jim

No iced tea? Now you’re really bringing me down…

        • John

Guns still work. So do knives, clubs and arrows. There in lies the problem…

  • smooze

I personally believe this will happen to us, though the grid being down for an extended period of time does not fall in line with the Bible.

    • alan

The grid can fail for many reasons, hacking, overload, attack, power plant failures, storms and earthquakes. Civil unrest where workers stay home. Don’t worry about the bible, power failure is not a religious thing.

      • smooze

Sure power failure is not a religious thing, except for in the Bible in Revelation it’ll be kinda hard for the antichrist to do the things he’s gonna do without electricity. Unless you don’t believe in the Bible then don’t worry about it. Either way, I’m planning and preparing for the worst and praying and hoping for the best.

    • RoseCZena

Actually it could because without the conveniences of modern agriculture, medicine and sanitation, famine and pestilence would ensue in short order.

Our entire economy is based on “just in time” delivery systems. Disrupt that and things go Gnarly in a great hurry.

      • smooze

        I don’t doubt it.

Quick question: if there was a emp attack and 90 percent of people die within 2 years, why would you want to survive? It makes me think of the Walking Dead. Who wants to live in that world?

    • HeyAHuman

Here we are, humans in the year 2015. For thousands of years, our ancestors have struggled to ensure our continuity as a species. Life was tough without doctors, dentists, and modern tech as we know it. However, they still had outlets for enjoyment, and found a way to appreciate things enough to pass on their progeny. The beauty is in the struggle, really.

        There will be struggle.

I would do all I can to survive and help my community survive. That is in my DNA I guess.
I also remind my self that humankind has survived for thousands of years without modern conveniences and thrived.
I grew up learning how to fish, hunt, can and preserve food without power so its not unfamiliar to me. We only have to look to the Amish to see that this is possible.

You are in very distinct minority. I would guess that maybe 1 American in a 1000 could pull through. The skill sets we took for granted to survive have largely vanished.

  • lmarkievich

I was worried about this awhile ago but if any country was crazy enough to do it, it would’ve already happened. Everything is global now and that has to play into a strategy.

    • RoseCZena

Right and we have Iran wanting to take down the “Great Satan” the USA. The Mullahs there who run the country desperately want to bring about the Apocalypse so their “Mahdi” {messiah} will appear and bring the entire world to Islam. The Mahdi is expected to do this through a great war, death and carnage. That is what most people don’t understand about Iran and other radical Muslim groups – they are willing to cause mass death and chaos to bring about the appearance of their messiah. These radicals will do this if they get the chance and they.don’t care about what other governments think.

If Humanity can screw things up – It will

  • alan

I am pretty sure I read this was a problem back in the 60’s. I think most modern electronics are harden against this. Or the EMP would only be effective in a small area. I would fear being attacked by Bigfoot before EMP.

      Most electronics are not hardened.

    • folgers22

No, they’re more, or less, softened. The smaller and more sensitive our electronics get, the more at risk they are.

  • RoseCZena

I suggest that everyone read “One Second After” by Military Historian William Forstchen. It describes what happens to America in great detail after an EMP attack by Iran. It sure was an eye opener for me because I live just down the road from the small town of Black Mountain NC where the story takes place. There is a lot one can learn from the book and I suggest that everyone read it and prepare.

Took the words right out of my mouth. The scenarios are all too real. Our society would begin busting apart within 72 hours IMHO.

      • jamesgwolfe

It will take less than 4 hours to start. Within 48 hours all cities will be on fire.

        • Priszilla

What does this tell us about aggressive Americans?

    • Sounds interesting. I’ve added it to my book list and plan to read it soon. Thanks.

    • GoldenGirl

In the same vein, Ted Koppel has a book being released later this month about a cyber-attack on our electrical grid, its aftermath and how we are woefully unprepared.

      • folgers22

Check out CyberStorm, which covers just that. You might be able to find it in PDF format free online. The premise is a massive hack attack on the US just as a massive blizzard hits NYC and how the locals survive the chaos with no support.

        • Priszilla

Easy remedy. Don’t put everything online for remote access. Employ local personnel.

    • Randy

I’ve read that book twice now, and it doesn’t go into anywhere near enough detail. If someone wrote a REAL book about a post electrical grid shutdown for ANY reason at all, be it EMP, hyperinflation, major war breakout or massive coordinated sabotage events, you’d hardly get past the first hundred pages without fainting! Yes, it will be that gruesome when that day finally arrives on our doorstep.

      • disqus_AdBgC6tdkJ

get the book, guilty knowledge, from the center for security policy, a pandemic will take the grid down also as the people that run it have no replacements. and a host of other things also, get the book. It is very interesting, prepare now, later will be too late!

    • Mari in MD

Have you read the follow-up, One Year After, yet? It came out in mid-September and I’m reading it now. Totalitarian government takeover…

      • Richard O. Mann

They won’t have much to have control over. 12 to 24 months, 90 percent of the population dead. No food. Very little water. Survival of the fittest. Kinda like the Walking Dead, with out the zombies.

“They” did it for centuries before electricity as we know it was, for lack of a better word, “invented”, so if “they” could do it 150+ years ago, they can do it again. I.e. sailboats, horses and good ole walking.

I suggest you all read also the Prepper and Survival Literature and books and websites of Alec Deacon, If you do not know it yet!
His videos and packages for Preppers and against famines and diseases and plagues and pandemies and self defense are very important and useful!

Alec Deacon “Darkest Days” – I suggest you watch the videos online, visit his Websites and the Forum and get the information and the packages while you are still able to. Prepare while you still can. Because after Day X you can not any more. Then it will be too late, and you will have to deal with the equipment and resources and items and tools you have. And do not forget, in the USA many, many people have firearms.
Or even more weapons. Even a kitchen knife is good enough to kill someone easily. And also the medical care will break down. Like the whole US Economy due to the fall of the USA dollar as a world currency and because of the collapse of the US Electric grid/electrical net and because of the Peak Oil and the shortening of other Ressources like Uranium sure to come. Read Heinbergs and Michael C. Rupperts books and see their videos about the resources running short, like oil and petrol for example!

  • G21

A non-violent EMP, natural or manmade, would be survivable if you’ve prepped even minimally.
Compare that to the violence of a nuclear war in which entire cities would be vaporized, with millions of burn victims and radiation-sickness cases.
Unfortunately, the latter is the more likely scenario.
Tough to prep for something like that.

    • folgers22

Read 1 Second After. It will scare your pants off. The problem is the 322 million other Americans who survive with you. The author predicted 90% of the country would be dead in 1 year.

  • K

You forgot the nuclear power plants melting down scenario. While if everyone stayed calm, and remained on duty. The plants could be shut down. The problem of maintaining the cooling pumps, has never been fully addressed. Yes the plants have backup generators, but usually only with enough fuel for a couple of weeks. So, in such a chaotic situation. Who is going to remain on duty, to maintain those backup generators? Who will be able to coordinate continued delivery of fuel, for such an extended timeline? Do any of us believe the backup systems, are perfectly maintained? And will thus, function flawlessly? In the long term, this is the greatest danger of EMP.

    • folgers22

I’m no expert on their redundancies, but I used to work at a nuclear plant. We did constant maintenance on our 2 backup generators, each the size of a locomotive, and tested them frequently. Wouldn’t we be able to scram the reactor in response to the emergency, thus halting the meltdown threat? Even without power, I thought the rods are spring-mounted to inject into the reactor within 4 seconds of activation.

      • K

You can indeed scram the reactor. However the cool down of the fuel rods, can take quite some time. Also the used fuel rods are stored in the plant area. Both the current, and the used fuel rods. Can be a melt down hazard for many months. If power is interrupted to the cooling pumps. Thus the concern of keeping the backup generators running for extended periods.

  • chilller

Most people don’t understand how the Carrington Effect works. If you know anything about how electricity is generated, you know passing a conductor through a magnetic field creates electricity. This “Electro-Magnetic Pulse” slams into the Earth, a very conductive iron ball, and generates a huge pulse of current from the GROUND. The same ground that all of our electronic and electrical equipment is connected to to help prevent us from being shocked should something go wrong inside the equipment. Other than a few pieces of military hardened equipment, everything else goes away. This is exactly what took out the transformer in Quebec during the last serious solar hit…a huge pulse from the ground side. Cost to upgrade our power grid transformers with a ground resistor to arrest the effects of an EMP is about $2B dollars. But since politicians only live for the day…they could care less.

    • MeMadMax

The ground side is only half of the picture.

We would also need to enclose the transformers in faraday cages to protect them from the pulse itself as well.

      • Richard O. Mann

The cost of it is beyond what this country is willing or can really afford, to protect the grid.

        • Eric Pearson

For the most part, bust fuses added to the system would prevent EMP damage. The cost is not that expensive compared to replacing the damaged transformers..

        • MeMadMax

“The cost of it is beyond what the power companies are willing or can really afford, to protect the grid, especially after crushing carbon regulations from an insane/tyrannical eco-freak administration…”

          There, fixed it for ya.

      • Eric Pearson

MeMasMax you are wrong, for the case of a transformer is a faraday cage. For the most part, the pulse is generated through the wires transporting the electricity from one location to another. The higher electrical pulse enters the transformer through the wires and blows them up.

        • MeMadMax

The germans are doing it… That merits some sort of investigation…

          • Evil_shadow

how would you prevent current from flowing through power lines and into transformer? Maybe with somekind induction based system, physically separated from lines, i dont see any other sollution…

    • Randy

It appears to me that you do not understand how the poly phase electrical transmission system is actually designed or works. I worked for SoCalEdison for 15 years, and even before then, I learned quite a bit about it.
In order to have a current flow from one point to another, you need a conductor with a different voltage potential at each end. The higher voltage will always flow towards the lower one. The amount of voltage that is lost due to resistance along the way is called the voltage drop of the circuit.
Just how do you plan on putting a resistor of any kind (even if that method would actually work) in between a transformer and the Earth?
The Compton Effect like any other magnetic phenomena, generates electricity in the wires because the magnetic lines of force are being “cut” by the conductor. You can have either the conductors or the magnetic field in motion, even both, but the motion must be at a right angle for it to work. Sliding a magnet along a conductor will not do anything, but passing it ACROSS the wire will produce electricity.
In the Carrington Event, there were no transformers involved, just mile upon mile of copper wires that picked up so much power they couldn’t conduct all of it and they melted from the heat. DC power from banks of batteries were used to power the telegraph system. Without all of those copper wires, no one would have ever been the wiser when it happened!
In the poly phase electrical transmission grid, the current alternates in direction at the rate of 50 or 60 times a second, depending upon where you are in the world. That is why the power grids have to be synchronized to each other, otherwise, the generating plants would all be fighting each other instead of working together.

    • Freddie Pringle

bad thing is that they are preparing for post emp by building armored bunkers to protect themselves and their families, while the rest of us poor schmucks have to suffer through the problems.

      • Evil_shadow

well, best thing to do is to block their air intake systems, pollute water(if possible WITHOUT endangering survivors on topside) and prevent them from exiting bunkers after everything is over…Let them rot in their bunkers, they have dug their own graves 😉 .

    • Evil_shadow

but 2 bill isnt such an impossible amount of money in this case.If you consider what they could have prevented with that…But then again, they are in office for 4 years(maybe 8 if they know right people) and then off….I feel sorry for all people who has nothing with US foreign politics and yet they will suffer because of it..

I don’t see what this has got to do with an economic collapse. An economic collapse could quite easily produce all the effects that are suggested above. And an economic collapse is rather more likely. Indeed, I personally don’t see how it is avoidable. I yearn to hear more about the commodities price collapse. I long to understand more about the eventual effects of $50 oil. If nobody’s buying copper, nobody’s building anything. If nobody’s building anything, nobody’s buying anything. Isn’t that an economic collapse, right there? There’s plenty to write about.

    • Agreed but it seems like Michael has written a lot about those topics. Just do a search on his site for “oil” or “commodities”.

    • Randy

You’re right Wiz! I read many years ago that if you wanted to gauge the health of the economy of any nation, all that you had to do was look at the price of copper there and its abundance. Copper is the number one indicator of growth in a nation because it is required for so many other things.
The world wide fiat paper currency/electronic bookkeeping entry financial system is right now teetering on the edge of the cliff and will soon go over. People can deny this all they want, but the facts are the facts and there’s no way to change them, because the system was DESIGNED to fail in just this way. Race cars are designed for racing, not going to the grocery stores, and vice versa. The banksters from ancient times on up to modern days have always designed their fiat paper currency systems to fail, that’s why they always do so! If they wanted a monetary system to last, it would do so!

      • Wiz

Cheers, Randy. Central banks all over the world are being ignored. The Swiss central bank episode a year ago was a turning point, in my view. Now money printing is doing nothing for demand. There is too much debt, and consumers are not earning enough to increase existing indebtedness. There is a spiral there – the capitalist system has bid down salaries to the extent that demand cannot possibly grow. And central banks are losing control because money printing cannot take up the slack. All that is happening is that speculative investment in property and equities is producing monumental bubbles, and real demand in the real economy is non-existent. That is a mutually enforcing disaster, and it will shortly end, in my view. It has never been this bad, because it has never been this big. Cheers

    • Mike Smithy

Wiz, you must understand that those individuals running the Central Banks do not want to take the blame for what they have done. They will continue to extend and pretend, deny and delay for as long as possible. Their enablers in the press/media will continue to provide cover for as long as possible. Once the crap reaches critical mass ,they will orchestrate a false flag event. I.E. EMP disaster, attack on power grid, cyber attack etc in an effort to manufacture plausible deniability for their hand in the global economic collapse.

      • Dottie

You people who read this site need to get a grip on reality. Do you really think anyone capable of producing this technology would use it on us? What do you think would happen to them?

    • Evan Elliott

But you haven’t presented a solid case on what exactly will happen to them if they did. I guess im confused as to what has lead people to believe that the gum’mint is going to protect them when things get bad. The government will be in their comfortable fortresses while we all suffer. They want all the wealth and resources for themselves. They could care less about whether you and I live. Maybe you need to get the grip on reality yourself. Take a look around yourself. Anyone capable of producing this technology is going to want us out of the way. And anyone who has the power to use it will use it to gain more power. You would have to be a fool to be blind to that.

      • Mike Smithy

Bingo. In addition, President Zero has provided ample evidence that the world would be a much better place without it’s power and influence. I have no doubt, President Zero would welcome an EMP attack on the USA.

Nothing has been done to protect the electrical grids because there is nothing that CAN be done!! What is anybody going to do, build a giant Faraday Cage over every power line, generating station and substation as well as all of the local power lines and homes too?!?!
That idiot George Noory with all of his talk and bluster about protecting the grids cannot cite even one bit of technology that can be used to block the Compton Effect! He’s been duped into thinking that something can be done and isn’t smart enough to pick up a few books on the subject of electricity and magnetism and get some education in that area. He’s just on a knee jerk reaction crusade without a single clue in his mind as to what it’s really all about.
There is no way to “harden” the electrical grids, because if there was, doesn’t anybody think that every electrical utility in the world would be doing it already to preserve their business?? Those men and women who work for the power companies have family members as well as friends too that will perish right along with them if they didn’t act when they could! See how ridiculous it all is now?
If someone had a business selling products for a profit, and which they were totally dependent upon for all of their wealth, doesn’t it make sense that they would do all that they could to keep those profits rolling in? If any part of their cash flow stream was in danger of being wiped out, they’d do all that they could to make it safe and keep it that way, wouldn’t they? This is why I say that if something could be done, it would be done. Nobody brings home some “extra” kilowatts of electricity in their lunch box to run their TV with, do they? So where would anybody who works for a power company get the electricity to light up their house with if the grids go down and no one else has any power in their fuse box??

    More fearmongering again?

Some might consider this fearmongering. But what one event could take out our spoiled country in a single blow? If a Scud was launched off a freighter and the freighter sunk- we may not even know who hit us. The country would so busy just trying to survive. Solar storms have hit us before- just never when we were so linked to power and communications. People freak out if they lose their cell and internet for a few hours. We all need to be more self reliant and resourceful in the future. Try reading “A NATION FORSAKEN” by Woolsey for more resource and background.

CNBC says it”s off to the races. There are different ways to intemperate this. What do you think?

  • Richard O. Mann

I have known about this for years. I guess gong all the way back to my time in the military. That was 1971-1980. There was talk of EMP devices even then. EMP as a weapon came about when a small yield nuke was launched from Johnson Island, a few thousand miles South West of Hawaii. When the device was detonated, the EMP from it knocked most of the radio stations in Hawaii off the air. Since then, the devices have been developed to be stronger and as mentioned, directional. Ask the average American what they know about EMP and you will get the deer in headlight look. Some times ignorance can be bliss. At least until the whole world blows up around you.

  • Priszilla

Electronic and electricity are two different things. You can make electricity without electronics. If you have a generator at home it is unlikely to be affected by EMP.

  • Priszilla

Possibility and probability. EMP is possible. But not probable. More probable is an epidemic. In America, Africa, Europe. So many poor people with poor nutrition and bad immunity. Everywhere crumbling health systems. Migrants. Close together. Transmitting anything and distributing anywhere.

Influenza, measles, ebola. Have viruses combine in some persons. Deadly ebola, easy transmission like neasles, long incubation like influenza.

When the nurses and doctors flee, and those without sick leave go to work, shopping and take public transport. And the looters infect themselves when killing people.

  • TheRoyal1

Should’ve adopted the Nikola Tesla idea of using the Earth’s Electromagnetic Field to supply our power for free…but that would be too much like right.

The EMP should be the best strategic weapon to attack USA or other country……If Russia or China or even both……use a nuclear attack, that would be a very stupid decision….the missiles would be detected….and they will be attacked and completely destroyed….but with the EMP even the most advanced country will go back to the age of ww1….they cannot use their jet fighters , their tanks…almost everything….cars telecomunications….pcs….the only choice is to use old cars before the 50s or the Sherman tanks 🙂 And to the invader force it would be like a sunday picnic winning the defender force in complete disarray. And the most important the EMP cannot be detected…..They can use all their money in fancy jets and robots…..but its irrelevant….And the actual situation between Russia China Iran vs USA and Europe its not good. But I complete disagree with Michael about a solar storm knocking the entire grid…..and even if that happens……it will be a temporary situation…because anyone is attacking ….A solar storm destroying the earth with the situation we have in Syria betwen the most powerful countries in the world ( USA and Russia ) its the least of our concerns…..I think there s more probability of we being hit by an asteroid than a solar storm…

I would suggest moving in with an Amish Family on their farm.
They have a religious conviction about electricity and are fairly independent of the grid. Most do use propane for power of one kind or another. Northern Ohio has an entire community of this group.
Automobiles use alternators. They also might be effected by an EMP.
Copying the Amish lifestyle concerning electricity would work. But it might get a bit expensive to do so.
You are talking about closing down the country.
The American people as a whole, meaning the poor, have been getting around electricity for a long time.
The rest of us, not so much. Though an inverter will give you electric lights if plugged into an cord. Suggest a cheap shop light as it is flourescent, 4 feet long, in either T8 or T12 bulbs. Uses very little power. I have actually cooled a house with a cheap 5,000 btu air conditioner and an inverter before. It is good for about an hour at most.
The only way to protect equipment is to insulate it against magnetic fields. Now that might get a little tricky.
Strongly suggest a diesel electric generator. Again it has to be protected to work. I would suggest some kind of iron mesh shielding.
If it were me, I would invest in placing the generator about 60 feet from the house and channeling the exhaust away from the house.
I would suggest also a wood burning stove of some kind as emergency backup. Preferably one designed to work without a fan.
Under normal conditions a lot of people have went to the wood chip variety. Personally I want something that will burn anything in an emergency.
Money is something you keep in storage outside of a bank.
Because in an emergency money talks, everything else walks.
Utility companies do not like to hear this stuff.
They use various methods including the EPA to keep people from becoming independent of the the utilities.

  • N_Disnye

The powers that be wouldn’t condone using an EMP to collapse society. They need the brainwashed to be able to follow instructions & without MSM & the Game of Thrones etc, they couldn’t give instructions & people would be forced to start thinking for themselves.

And that would be bad for the Banksters.

  • Guest2

Personally, I think an estimate of 90% dead within a year is way too pessimistic. People will surprise you! Even though much of what you describe in a worst-case scenario of this type is true … and even tho we are spoiled rotten these days with various conveniences… I believe people are adaptable. Yes some parts of the populaton would have high die offs (for example, pretty much anyone sick who has to take medicine to survive, like type I diabetics)… but people get more creative than you give them credit for when desperate. Hungry people, except forf those who are excessively squeemish…

Aside from what you can find in the country, small towns and suburbs… I have never been in a big city where I did not see various edible plants (berries, apples, wild onions and garlic, dandilions, asparagus, fennel, cactus, sorrel, kudzu, marigolds, pansies and violets, etc.) as well as wildlife (mice, rats, squirrels, fish in ponds, lizards, snakes, birds… as well as things like dogs and cats… unfortunately some will become cannibals and eat people). There are also bugs, worms, bark, and grasses that can keep people alive. I also have seen people raise gardens in surprising places, between the sidewalk and road, in pots on rooftops, etc. Just sayin1~

And as a good example for ideas of what might happy I can recomomend reading some of the books by SM Stirling. For example (quoke from Wiki): “In Dies the Fire, S. M. Stirling chronicles the struggle of two
groups who try to survive “The Change”, a mysterious worldwide event
that suddenly alters physical laws so that electricity, gunpowder, and most other forms of high-energy-density technology no longer work. As a result of this, modern civilization comes crashing down.”

PS this and post above was from me, Orange Jean. Apparently the option of using a moniker and posting as a guest no longer available on Disquis.

    Good article as always.

We are vulnerable to an EMP from the sun’s pulsar core: An empirical FACT hidden from the public for the last 70 years – including the 2015 Noble Prize in Physics announced this week.

What are the chances that an EMP attack will be conducted right in the middle of Wash D.C., and will be conducted by the U.S. itself? Just as a coverup of the economic collapse?
Then they’ll blame it all on Russia. Or China, or Iran, or Bin Laden.

  • Occams

”Iranian military documents describe such a scenario–including a recently translated Iranian military textbook that endorses nuclear EMP attack against the United States.”

    Nice try.

I’ll look for your name from now one so I know when the government or Israel HOPES I’m as stupid and as gullible as most Amerikans.

I personally think this will never happen .this is just a big fat fear mongering piece .

There are greater threats then this. Consider the weather wars geoengineering happening above our heads each day that’s contributing greatly to the sixth great extinction. They refuse to stop aerial spraying the world with aluminum, barium and all kinds of dreadful chemicals that human extinction is becoming inevitable. This coupled with what they’re up to at CERN, that’s really satanist scientists attempting to penetrate the veil allowing Satan’s fallen angels into our dimension like Revelation 9 describes.

We’re being warned about this almost daily. It doesn’t seem like people get the full impact of such an event. Food and water production would come to a grinding halt. Municipal water and sewer systems would stop functioning within days; after fuel for generators and backup systems was depleted. It’s best to prepare now, just in case. Clean water will be a huge issue in this type of scenario with the best source being ground water by way of wells. Without power to run pumps that water would be unattainable. Tools like the Emergency Well Tube can be used to draw water from wells without power. It’s backup tools like this that may be the difference in surviving a worst case scenario.

Its sad to see, that so many countries around the world hates USA, but to blame them? It was your govt(elected as it seems), that brought enemy to their common enemy- US.All those revolutions in south america in early 70s, colorful revolutions in ex soviet union(started with serbia in 1998), arab spring (mostly supported by US and its puppets in Eu), expannding NATO (and later EU too) toward Russia (war in ukraine) encircle Russia and china with military bases…Is there any doubt why most of the world hate US? not because of your living style or (once great) republic governed system, but because US wants to be top dog, supreme ruller on the earth. Is that fault of People? wouldnt say so, but people DO vote their candidates into senate or congress…

Actually we’d be LUCKY if things went back to how they were in the 1800’s, but that is being too optimistic. The technology we had then in that century would not be able to be recreated (telegraphs, steam trains, etc.) because no one would be around with the know how or skills to create 1800’s infrastructure. It’s most likely that things would end up back where they were in Dark Ages of Europe around the year 1000 A.D. technology wise.

I believe there are about 179 nuke facilities in the US, and when back-up generators run out of diesel, and can no longer keep the cooling system, functioning, , , , , China Syndrome times 179. BOOM !
