I Can’t Take It Anymore! When Will The Government Quit Putting Out Fraudulent Employment Statistics?

On Friday, the entire financial world celebrated when it was announced that the unemployment rate in the United States had fallen to 8.3 percent. That is the lowest it has been since February 2009, and it came as an unexpected surprise for financial markets that are hungry for some good news.  According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nonfarm payrolls jumped by 243,000 during the month of January.  You can read the full employment report right here.  Based on this news, pundits all over the world were declaring that the U.S. economy is back.  Stocks continued to rise on Friday and the Dow is hovering near a 4 year high.  So does this mean that our economic problems are over?  Of course not.  A closer look at the numbers reveals just how fraudulent these employment statistics really are.  Between December 2011 and January 2012, the number of Americans “not in the labor force” increased by a whopping 1.2 million.  That was the largest increase ever in that category for a single month.  That is how the federal government is getting the unemployment rate to go down.  The government is simply pretending that huge numbers of unemployed Americans don’t want to be part of the labor force anymore.  As you will see below, the employment situation in America is not improving.  Yet everyone in the mainstream media is dancing around as if the economic crisis has been cancelled.  I can’t take it anymore!  It is beyond ridiculous that so many intelligent people continue to buy in to such fraudulent numbers.

The truth is that the labor force participation rate declined dramatically in January.  For those unfamiliar with this statistic, the labor force participation rate is the percentage of working age Americans that are either employed or that are unemployed and considered to be looking for a job.

As you can see from the chart posted below, the labor force participation rate rose steadily between 1970 and 2000.  That happened because large numbers of women were entering the labor force for the first time.

The labor force participation rate peaked at a little more then 67 percent in the late 90s.  Between 2000 and the start of the recent recession, it declined slightly to about 66 percent.

Since then, it has been dropping like a rock.  The chart below does not even include the latest data.  In January, the labor force participation rate was only 63.7 percent.  That is the lowest that is has been since May 1983.  So keep that in mind as you view the chart.

In reality, the percentage of men and women in the United States that would like to have jobs is almost certainly about the same as it was back in 2007 or 2008.  There has been no major social change that would cause large numbers of men or women to want to give up their careers.  So there is something very, very fishy with this chart….

The federal government has been pretending that millions of unemployed Americans have decided that they simply do not want jobs anymore.

This does not make sense at all.

The truth is that unemployment is not really declining at all.  The percentage of Americans that are working is not increasing.  The civilian employment-population ratio dropped like a rock during 2008 and 2009 and it has held very steady since that time.

In January, the civilian employment-population ratio once again held steady at 58.5 percent.  This is about where it has been for most of the last two years….

Does that chart look like an “economic recovery” to you?

Of course not.

If the percentage of people that are employed is about the same as it was two years ago, does that represent an improvement?

Of course not.

If the employment situation in America was getting better, the civilian employment-population ratio would be bouncing back.

We should be thankful that our economy is not free falling like it was during 2008 and 2009, but we also need to understand why things have stabilized.

The federal government is spending money like there is no tomorrow.  During 2011, the Obama administration stole an average of about 150 million dollars an hour from our children and our grandchildren and pumped it into the economy.  Even though the Obama administration spent that money on a lot of frivolous things, it still got into the pockets of average Americans who in turn went out and spent it on food, gas, clothes and other things.

Without all of this reckless government spending, we would not be able to continue to live way above our means and our economic problems would be a lot worse.

But even with the federal government borrowing and spending unprecedented amount of money, and even with interest rates at record lows, our economy is still deeply struggling.  Just consider the following facts….

-New home sales in the United States hit a brand new all-time record low during 2011.

-The average duration of unemployment in America is close to an all-time record high.

-The percentage of Americans living in “extreme poverty” is at an all-time high.

-The number of Americans on food stamps recently hit a new all-time high.

-According to the Census Bureau, an all-time record 49 percent of all Americans live in a home that gets direct monetary benefits from the federal government.  Back in 1983, less than a third of all Americans lived in a home that received direct monetary benefits from the federal government.

So let’s not get too excited about the economy.

Yes, things have somewhat stabilized.  The percentage of Americans that have jobs is about the same as it was two years ago.  Considering how rapidly jobs are being shipped out of the United States, that is a good thing.

Enjoy this false bubble of hope while you can.  Things are about to get a lot worse.

Do you remember how rapidly things fell apart after the financial crisis of 2008?

Well, another major financial crisis is on the way.  This time it is going to be centered in Europe initially, but it is going to spread all around the globe just like the last one did.

As the charts above show, we have never even come close to recovering from the last recession, and another one is on the way.

So how bad are things going to get after the next wave of the financial crisis hits us?

That is something that we should all be thinking about.

To answer the question in the title: when it no longer exists in anything like its present form and is no longer under the nefarious influence of the Money Master Mafia. Alcoholics drink; gamblers gamble; porn addicts watch porn; gluttons stuff their faces; thieves steal and liars lie. Godspeed to you and yours in 2012 and beyond.

  • http://conservativemormonmom.blogspot.com Eva

I’m so with you. If we all shout loud enough, maybe Americans will hear us over the news media!

  • Rodster

According to Tim Scott’s book “The Case For A New America” which is an excellent read btw. The Gubmint likes to base their unemployment figures using the U3 formulas whereas they should be basing it on U6 formulas which would give them more accurate figures but then the unemployment numbers be be much, much higher.

Here’s an interesting article which discusses this in more depth.

    http://www.economicpopulist.org/content/u3-and-u6-unemployment-during-great-depression

  • knightowl77

You gotta love that hope and change thingy….

    Less jobs = less unemployment….LOL

Real unemployment U6 is now over 16% but the lamestream media and the government run news says everything is better….you had better believe it or else….Re-education camps are forming in a neighborhood near you to make you believe the government lies…

    • Lennie Pike

Re-education camp? Takin’ it off boss.

      • Lennie Pike

The only reason they’re spewing phony numbers to buy a little time. There will come the day when they won’t need to lie any longer – probably immediately after they’ve confiscated American’s small arms – big ones too.

We’re the last ones on the planet that have them (enough) you know – they’ve been confiscating them in other countries for years now. They are a huge problem for foreign and whatever traitorous American Military ground troops choose to start an unconstitutional war against their own fellow citizens.

I know for a fact that there are now nearly 100,000 Chinese Red Army soldiers inside the United States. Of course they are not wearing their sky blue berets on the job – maybe the job that should be yours. There are new arrivals every day and they can’t drive worth a shit either – probably don’t need to pass a driver’s test or even have a driver’s license.

Remember during the clinton years when several American Soldiers refused to wear the u.n. uniform – nothing has changed other than Americans falling deeper into denial.

        • Lennie Pike

If anyone wonders how I know about the Chinese – racial profiling and eavesdropping in a public place – lawful activity.

          • knightowl77

            Show me the facts…

Make sure you have enough ammo and plenty of magazines, as well as spare parts for your weapons…

        • Highspeedloafer

          Lenny,
This has to be the biggest story going on in the country and you are the only one I know writing about it. Can you send any links or any other info, as I would like to get myself educated on this subject. I live in the rural south and haven’t seen a chinaman in a coon’s age, so I’d like to know where they are. This gives me reason to purchase more ammo and to put in more time at the range.

          • Lennie Pike

It looks like you did not see my last post on the subject. There are no links or other info on the subject that I know of. One can use common sense though to get an inkling (more than an inkling I’d say) that my claim is true – but not enough to prove it.

I’ve got a big streak of spy, and getting to the bottom of what most don’t even notice in me – probably due to being an ex-professional blackjack player. If something seems odd to me and important enough – I will find a way to get the answer.

I live in the Rural South also and you’re right – you don’t see many newly arrived Chinese here, but I guarantee you that most small towns have at least one or two. You will never see any children with them – soldiers on deployment for war don’t take children along with them – make that “a child” since their totalitarian government limits them to one child which is usually a boy (girls are aborted) so that he can also later join the Red Army – a force of over 1 billion soldiers. The huge majority of Chinese are not allowed to travel out of China – they would never return.

Of course there are many patriotic freedom loving people of Chinese ancestry in the U.S. and I think most of them still speak Chinese. That’s why I mentioned bad driving – it’s the most reliable way to detect a new arrival. All bad drivers I have seen are of fighting soldier age also. The new arrivals could be Taiwanese true, but Taiwanese drive cars – Mainland Chinese for the most part do not – especially soldiers.

But go to California and you will find the mother load of the new arrivals, and the fact they are being sent there for the most part is that they will easily blend in. Make that at first in the beginning – now there are so many it’s obvious they were not born in the U.S..

I have a friend who I believe who says he has seen Chinese training with the American Military. I have seen a jet fighter with a red star on it’s tail in the U.S..

The biggest clue without something that approaches proof like what I heard, is that all U.S. manufacturing has been moved to Mainland China – they own us.

Go to the international airports in Washington D.C. and you will think you are in China with all of the Chinese Lobbyists and business men there calling on “our” Congressmen and Bureaucrats.

Ever seen any story whatsoever or any video of the factories in China that used to be here? At the same time General Motors was claiming bankruptcy here in the U.S., it was opening a factory the size of a city in China but we got a Lindsey Lohan story instead.

We need to wake up and do something – look who has overthrown our government! We do not have the government we used to have.

            We have global fascism now!

  • Pechez

Sheeple thats what we are, we will vote these same liars and twisters of the truth back into office this year so they can lie and twist more. While the 99% will lose their 401K’s and are having their pensions robbed some by our ownd goverment the liars and twisters will be making money had over fist by tellng the lies and twisting the truth for as long as possible. It will take one fall of some dominio they have no control over such as a bank run or some sort of panic over a shortage of something, a natural disaster, the US dollar no longer being the currency used to pay for oil, the collpase of the EU, no one buying our bonds and all the domino’s will fall but “they” will have far more advance notice than the 99%.

  • http://economic-calvinball.blogspot.com/ Chris Rhodes

I put up a post on my blog about these numbers today too. They are totally bogus, as usual.

Ignoring even the continuing dismal ratio of employed people to total population, if you dig into the types of jobs being “created”, you’ll find that the US lost 1.2 MILLION full time jobs in January, and managed to gain only 435k part time jobs to replace them.

That this is being heralded as some kind of recovery is shameful, but we can expect this crap to continue all the way to November.

I am one of those who collect government benefits. I spent 31 years in the military and get a retirement. I sometimes wonder for how long?????

    • YERMOM

the difference is your earned it Brotha.

      thanks for your service.

    • mark

You will recieve your government check until you pass on. The buying power will be less, but the check will always be in the mail. We talk about bank runs and bank closings. The way the Fed creates money today the printing press will be gone before long and cash will a thing in the past. Debit cards and credit cards or something like them will be used. When cash is no longer used bank runs can’t happen as the Fed can just extend more credits to the member banks of the club and they can never run out of whatever is called money in the future. The government will try to own everything and control the price of everything. Black markets will happen and government controled stores will be empty. Those in power will be able to have nice things and the rest of us will live in poverty. Hey, this sounds like the old Soviet Union. Some things never change. We have some freedom and then we exchange it for the nanny state which becomes a police state and then we wish we had some freedom again. Will we ever learn from the past and quit walking in the same old circle of history.

    • mb

Unlike so many “entitlements” you EARNED your government benefits Charles. What you recieve the rest of your life is far less than what you have given, or may of had to give (the ultimate sacrifice). Thank you!

    • denny

Yeah, Charles, Good question. Believe it or not the Weimar government in Germany eradicated all military pensions in the 1920’s claiming that hyperinflation and reparations from WW 1 precluded paying veterans. The temp government in place right after WW 1 even had a version of a PTSD pension (although it wasn’t called that back then). They couldn’t ignore what four years in the trenches did to combatants and many German vets were suffering from it. When the ‘liberal’ Weimar government came in one of the first things they did was to abolish vet entitlements and I will bet the farm that as soon as our politicians determine that the veterans’ voting block is not much of an election factor we can kiss all of our entitlements goodbye.

    • MarkieMark

Get ready Charles and all you other people collecting government pensions and Social Security. The government has a plan that is going to screw you—
They realize all of the pension promises cannot be kept and SS is a Ponzi scheme. What they will do is allow inflation to run wild. Pensions and SS are supposed to have Cost of Living increases built in but those are set once per year. They will do the yearly adjustment and then inflation will out run the increases within the first few months. The net effect will be the government will be paying out less and less. For those getting pensions and SS, they may get paid twice as much as last year but everything will cost 4X as much.
The poor will still receive their basic needs for free. The wealthy will be able to stash their wealth in gold, commodities, or overseas currencies so they will be only marginally hurt. The Middle Class and retirees will be wiped out.

  • http://www.youtube.com/thepreparedpastor Prepared Pastor

Who cares what the government says anymore? One either has a job or they don’t and I do for the next six months. I accepted a temp position so I can buy another boat load of provisions. If I don’t find another job then I’ll recieve extended unemployment than I did working and spend my days on the retreat and my nights sending out resumes. I’ve been predicting collapse since I wrote my Master’s Thesis in the 90s, but they just keep finding ways to prop it up. I’m getting to the point where I have lost faith our way of life can be saved. If we are already bankrupt, may as well put a few groceries on the credit card.

Maybe I wouldn’t be saying this if I were not ready. I would likely be awake at night wondering how I am going to provide my family with food, water, shelter, and security. I can sleep when the wind blows because I do not need money for the basic necessities anymore. I just want to raise my kids and teach them to adapt to whatever crapfest the world will look like when they are my age.

No duh Obama will do anything to keep his job and lying to keep consumer confidence up through the election might just buy you enough time to lay in that extra year supply, or finish your solar cabin, or build strategic alliances. When the end comes, it will come fast so be ready.

May as well start liquidating today while there is still people who will buy worthless crap. Invest that money in grub, gear, guns, ground, and gold. Max out those credit cards and make minimum payments. Cash out that retirement plan before the govt does it for you and gives you a nice guarenteed pension (its happened before). Live a double life and when your job or your spouses job vanishes, you do the same.

    • r.bitting

Dear brother… I’m sure I will get a blacklash of abuse for this but I feel compelled to ask you to this.. How do you reconcile the content in the last paragraph of your post with your Title ” Pastor “. Is that advice of God? Please offer advice thats biblically consistent or offer none at all, considering that there are souls at stake. Exploiting others for your own gain and encouraging others to do the same is contrary to Gods command to love your neighbor as yourself. Prov. 15:32….

      • Lennie Pike

        Here comes some backlash:

I know the Prepared Pastor doesn’t need my help and this is none of my business but no one is perfect. One doesn’t have to be perfect to be a Pastor and some of the best Pastors ever were some of the biggest sinners ever – check out one of the best movies I’ve ever seen with Robert Duval “The Opostle” I think was the name of it.

Accepting The Forgiveness and Forgiving others is more important than trying to obey – which of course is also very important.

        • r.bitting

Lennie Pike… Theres a world of difference between falling into sin and diving into it. You know the man is in the wrong, so call it for what it is. Encouraging him to continue in that sort of thinking is not a career move… for either of you.

    • mark

I would not advise anyone to go into debt. As banks grab more power over time the term debt slave or serf could be enforced. You will need cash to pay your property taxes as we never really own property. We can pay off our bank loans but we still have to pay rent to the government for our place in the country.

    • Craig

I understand what you’re saying, but you might as well vote for Obama then. At least Obama will keep the printing presses running 24/7 and the survival money flowing via food stamps and other freebies. You think Romney is going to stop the flow of jobs out of the country? He is no different than Obama regarding jobs. I do not like Obama at all, but it looks like Americans are not going to vote for Santorum who is the only guy talking about restoring middle class jobs for Americans.

    • Highspeedloafer

      @ prepared pastor.

Sir, I would ask you to change your mind or change your handle. You are a disgrace to the office you claim to hold. Your advice reeks of this world and you should be ashamed.

Your plan to borrow with no intention to repay is nothing less than stealing according to the Bible. You are practicing the same thing you condemn others for. I ask you to re-think your position.

    • Lennie Pike

That advice sounds like Love for the ones who belong to God that are being abused by the enemies of God – I could be mistaken but I see nothing wrong with that advice.

      • Lennie Pike

Things are different now that we are approaching their “end game” – maybe paying your debts was the right thing to do before, but look at the recent actions of these banksters. Through their recent actions, we can deduce what their future actions will be. There is no rule of law for them – are they paying their debts or are they bailing themselves out? MONEY DOES NOT EVEN EXIST ANYMORE!

The veil has come off and we now are certain of who they are – they are the traditional enemies of God and they are going to pull Mr. Taggart’s number 6 on us hear perty soon.

Personally, I wouldn’t be that concerned about whether they get paid or whether or not I am doing the right thing or not – so that my family and friends can live in a little more comfort until that Biblical time arrives when they come after all Believers and haul us off to court.

  • Tim

I like the title of this post. That’s exactly how I felt this morning when I saw that the unemployment rate for January had “dropped.”

The broader U-6 unemployment figure includes short-term discouraged workers–those looking for employment for a year or less–and those forced to work part-time because they can’t find full-time employment. During the Clinton Administration the government changed the U-6 figure to no longer include those who have been looking for employment for longer than one year. Still, U-6 is currently about 15%.

When “long-term” discouraged workers are factored in, the real unemployment rate is even higher than 15%.

  • http://worldendsat5newsat11.blogspot.com Tony Lamb

It’s sad when the very people who make up this propaganda start believing their own propaganda and pass it off as truth. Everyone knows the government ONLY counts people on unemployment as being unemployed.
What about the people who could NOT find work and ran out of unemployment? I guess they don’t count uh?
What about the people who accept part time jobs, I guess they found work, Uh?
Or what about people with Masters degrees working at McDonalds, hey they are working, right?
See how to survive the coming Economic Collapse at: http://surviving12-21-2012.blogspot.com

    • Lennie Pike

Also a lot of people lose their jobs that don’t qualify for unemployment. I know that anyone who works for commission only falls into that category (why?) – like a cab driver for instance.

A lot of those people are forced to quit or work for next to nothing when there is no business through no fault of their own.

There must be other categories that also don’t qualify for unemployment benefits.

      • Highspeedloafer

Um, dude.. I’m trying to unclog my kitchen drain right now. Got any “green” items to help me with that?! I stuck an oleander branch down the pipe (without the leaves, ha ha), and it didn’t do any good. Went out and bought a drum auger at Home Depot. No luck! So I’m going to have to call a plumber (which wastes greenhouse gases, gasoline and petroleum to power his vehicle and that other stuff which he has to use to unclog my drain). If that doesn’t work, maybe I’ll ask my chemist friend for some sulfuric acid to pour down the drain. (WARNING!! Do NOT do this!!!!) If you do – you will harm your plumbing, your environment, and your cockroaches. Okay, getting rid of the roaches is fine.)

It’s not easy being green. Just ask Kermit the Frog. (He actually sang about that in the original “Muppet Movie” in 1979.)

MICHAEL, I LIKE YOU, THINK THAT ALOT OF THE NUMBERS THAT THE GOVERNMENT PUTS OUT ARE SCUED. I HAVE TO ASK YOU THIS. IS IT POSSIBLE THAT UNEMPLOYMENT COULD BE DROPPING BECAUSE A LOT OF OLDER WORKERS ARE SWITCHING FROM UNEMPLOYEMENT INSURANCE TO SSI. I HAVE A LOT OF FRIENDS THAT ARE OLDER AND HAVE LOST THERE JOBS BECAUSE THE COMPANIES ARE GETTING RID OF THEM BECAUSE THEY HAVE LARGE SALARIES AND ARE REPLACING THEM WITH CHEAPER YOUNGER EMPLOYEES. I HAVE HEARD THAT AS MANY AS 10,000 SENIORS ARE TURNING 65 EVERYDAY, AND LIKE MYSELF I STARTED DRAWING AT 62. I DID THE MATH AND I THINK EVEN THOUGH YOU GET LESS IT WOULD TAKE YOU TO 82 TO RECOVER THE MONEY YOU LOST FROM 62 TILL 65. ALSO THERE WAS A REPORT THAT FOOD STAMP USEAGE HAS DROPPED .03 OF ONE PERCENT. ANY INSIGHT ON THAT? THANKS MICHAEL

Michael, you write in the last sentence of Paragraph 1: ” intelligent people ” continue to buy in to … ” this rubbish. If this isn’t an oxymoron, I don’t know what is! I always love the use of ‘oxymoron’. ;-> And I see your point, Ima, but I know what Michael means…at least, this is how I interpret it; The information delivery system is so corrupt/complicit now and has been for so LONG, that your average range of intelligence Joes simply think that they are being told the truth. Intelligence does not guarantee the embrace of reality, nor even the inclination to SEEK it. Frankly, it’s time for all of us to get on our knees and pray that the eyes of the people be open, and that HEARTS are changed. Our country is failing because it’s people have fallen away from reality. At this point, the Lord’s transformation of hearts is the only thing that will make a difference.

    Michael,

I guessing that you are aware of Zero Hedge, but in case you missed this post, it adds fuel to your fire: http://tinyurl.com/86udfw4

“Yes, things have somewhat stabilized. The percentage of Americans that have jobs is about the same as it was two years ago.”

Census data tells us somewhere around 150,000+ new people (citizens & illegals combined) enter the job market every month. Things have not stabilized, but as you note its papered over with huge deficits to keep public employees on the payroll and by doling out food stamps, rent assistance, cell phones, etc. at record levels to keep the peasants from going berserker.

“That is something that we should all be thinking about.”

    Very good article Michael.

You know, the other day, my mom finally admitted, after 2 and half years, that we don’t have the same opportunities as her generation had (Baby Boomers).

I have been telling my family this for years… And they out-right dismissed me, called me crazy, depressed etc…

Well, a couple of days ago, we had a discussion, and I told her that, I don’t have the option of going to work at AK-Steel like my dad did right out of high school, getting paid 15$/hr with full benefits and a 401k… (AK-Steel laid off 5,000+ people since 09) And I said, if I don’t go to college (Which I can’t afford) then my only options are mimum-wage jobs or the military… So, after 2 years, with no real improvement in the economy, she finally got it.

So, no I don’t care what the “Government” figures say, because I live in reality… I know dozens if not (Without exaggeration) more than 100 people who are barely making it with or without a job, I know public defenders who kids aren’t working and say the economy is improving to the 5,000+ men and women who lost their middle class job at AK-Steel…And for every BMW, BENZ and Cadillac I see on the road, there are 100 Prius right behind them…

Stay Strong and Keep Up the Good Work!

    • James

Don’t waste your time going back to school. The unemployment rate for college grads is climbing as well. Take the money you would use to go to school and start a small business.

    • Otown Right Guy

As you pointed out we have already had a collapse. It may have been a “soft” collapse, and it may have taken decades, but here we are. We did have a time where they were guaranteed good paying jobs for HS grads. Then the bar moved up to a college degree. Now there is just an ever-shrinking pool of good paying jobs, and those good paying jobs are paying less in real terms. People are waiting for a “hard” collapse where the dollar will be worthless, the grocery store shelves will be bare, etc. I think they have missed the real story unfolding right in front of their eyes.

yes its frustrating to hear the talking heads lie through their teeth. but we all know it a ploy to quell frustration to to keep popularity for his next election. Treasonous liars.

The government (and, of course, the people calling the shots) have chosen a strategy right out of any good deal-with-the-Devil story. Like the Devil, they promised their targets something they could not otherwise attain, then provided it in the most twisted and destructive possible way.

They promised the middle class sufficient material goods and illusory status to make them feel important and superior, if only they agreed to go into debt and never look up (or down). Now, the middle class is being destroyed by the very means that it used to attain false prosperity for the last 30 years.

The rich conned the middle class with false promises of wealth and status, and the attainability of their pretend-wealth kept the workers in line, as well. But now, the rich are finding out that the little scheme they bankrolled might not work out for them, either. Perhaps the rich only thought they were in charge, and someone was conning them all from the start . . .

To show you – and then to prove to you how absolutly STUPID most Americans are and have become; Obama has a current approval Rating of just under 50% ( this will RISE closer to election )

The true evidence is all around us and yet —-

    He WILL be re-elected

That is a promise – this country is so screwed
we cannot even imagine at this point.

    Michael;

I am one of these people, as you well know. Everyday, I apply to dozens of jobs. I have availed myself of all resources. And while I have been in and out of hospital, I have been still searching for honest, decent paying work. I have a child with special needs, and another who I refuse to send to the socialist indoctrination centers, laughably called schools. We have now exhausted our savings, the pittance known as unemployment, and even the charity of our relations. I am a college educated man, who spends his days searching for a decent wage, finding nothing but low paying service jobs, and those are few and far between at that.
Lies, damned lies, and statistics will not put food on tables, pay bills nor will they renew emptied savings and retirement accounts. Each day another talking head shows up and spiels about the economy. But what do they really know? I can read charts and stats as well as the next fellow. I can add, subtract, multiply and divide. I’ve taken differential and integral calculus, I comfortable with math, but what they are talking defies all logic and rational thought. How can markets keep going up, when they do so on nothing more than the continued fiction of prosperity?

  • BenjiK

While I’m not a “re-poster” and try to contribute fresh thoughts to each article, I feel my comment on a previous story from a while back fits in extraordinarily well here:

Your example of unemployment numbers are spot-on. I just have to look at our circle of friends and family to see the truth in this. Out of 8 guys, who were all gainfully employed in 2006, only 1 still has their job, albeit without a raise since 2007(previously he was receiving a raise once a year). The other 7 did receive unemployment benefits until they ran out. Now 2 are down to a single income household, 2 are in federally-funded college programs, 2 are still working in their trade, but as “independent contractors” as their employer could no longer afford to keep them on the books full time and 1 has started his own business without much success. So have these 7 people contributed to the feds distorted numbers for drops in unemployment benefits? Of course, however, that sure doesn’t mean they have found gainful employment and their quality of life reflects such. So that is the lesson here, although the number of people applying for unemployment benefits is going “down”, the stark reality is the job market and the general economy continue to crumble, despite the federal governments attempt to paint a rosy picture with skewed statistics and overly-confident sound-bites.

BTW, the personal situations haven’t improved for any of these gentleman since I originally shared this observation. Again, I apologize for the repeat, but this is the TRUE scope of what’s really happening in the real world.

  • David Gurney

At least they’re consistent.Whether it’s economic statistics or birth statistics,we all know it’s a lie.

  • 007

This article is totally correct and unfortunately just scratches the surface of these false statistics.

The unemployment and inflation rate are being grossly exaggerated by our government. You do not have to look far to find the incredible partisan attempt to manipulate these numbers. Where do they come from? The Department of Labor and Statistics. Who is in charge of issuing these statistics. Secretary Sanchez, the most socialist, drooling, partisan, Obama supporter you will ever find. Look at her resume and it will scare you. She is vested in helping Obama get reelected.

First rule of the socialist democrats, don’t try to fix the economy, just mislead and distort and distract the public from the true economic horror we face. Yes, that is a good trick. There are no new jobs, so simply make the percentage of the public seeking a job disappear. Maybe, they have decided to retire to live off their fat stock market gains to live touring wine vineyards in the Napa Valley. No, more likely these are the homeless you pass on the street. They are living in their cars or if they are lucky living in disgrace with friends or relatives.

How rude and insulting to our intelligence for our government to so blatantly lie to us. My father told me once to never let anyone pee down your back and then tell you it’s raining. Well according to the Democrats, it is raining. Every person with half a brain must suspect the reality of these ” improving statistics”. If the government can make another 10,000,000 people disappear they can declare total victory.

Unfortunately, this is not the only trick in the calculation of the unemployment rate. They create job estimates out of thin air of massive numbers of new business. I am sure you see these springing up around you. They then follow with “seasonal adjustments” of jobs which never seem to adjust back down in the direction of reality. Then if that does not distort the answer enough to their liking they manipulate the birth/ death model for the population. If this makes you mad. Just wait. You pay billions of dollars for the Department of Labor to provide such garbage statistics. in Reality, this is about the only thing the DLS does for it’s enormous budget.

Well, if you have not had your intelligence insulted enough today, catch Bernanke’s latest testimony before congress. Good news! Inflation is subdued at under 2%. Please ignore the inflation of over 10% inflation for food, clothing, health care, ulilities, gasoline, rent, education and taxes. Those are just “transitory” increases. But this will allow the Fed to print more money to bail out their buddies, um, I mean work on reducing unemployment.

But, this is good news too. When the government grossly underestimates inflation it automatically over states our growth and GDP. GDP is by definition, goods and servises produced over inflation. But that’s a good thing too, because it makes our percentage of annual deficits appear more acceptable.

It has come to the point that government statistics are totally distorted and useless. You might as well just count the number of homeless people or closed stores on your way to judge the state of he economy.

  • Sid Davis

    Of course unemployment is huge.

Unemployment is principally caused by (1)the bust phase of the boom/bust cycle, and (2) government interference in the free market with a multitude of regulations that drives business outside US borders.

The boom/bust cycle is caused by the fiat money system centered on the Federal Reserve Bank which allows debt and money creation to drive the boom phase until the debt overwhelms the economy and drags it into contraction. As long as the federal government attempts to prop up the debts instead of nature liquidating them, depression levels of employment and profits will continue. So unemployment will be here for quite some time.

The real answer is to follow the Constitutional provisions which empower Congress to COIN money and prohibits States from making anything but gold and silver coins legal tender.

If we cancel the charter of the Federal Reserve Bank and require deposit banks to maintain a 100% reserve of gold and/or silver in their vaults to back up their deposit liabilities, we can end the boom bust cycle. If we continue with the present system of plunder and control, revolution will almost certainly arise out of the pain and suffering it produces. When a sufficient portion of the citizenry are driven into poverty with nothing left but anger and guns, watch out.

  • 007

I woner if this is how it really goes.

    Ring ring…

….Secretary Sanchez, BLS, can I help you?

….Uh yea, Secretary Sanchez, This is Obama here. Hey listen, this jobless problem is totally out of hand. I mean, I have an election in 9 months and people are talking. What can you do for me?

Well, gee, Mr President, there are no jobs and our job killing socialist agenda doesn’t help at all.

…Hmmm, that is a problem. Do you think you can spiff up these public statistics. They are really depressing to people.

…Yea we can sure do that. We can’t create jobs but we can sure play with these statistics and make millions of jobless people just disappear. That will bring down that pesky unemployment rate.

…Yea, that’s a great idea. They will probably never even notice that during superbowl week. Now that’s good government! And to think, people have a problem with big government.

All I can say is we were betting on one more lie. Yesterday we put into motion our last big sell off in the stock market related investments. I bet on Friday to have a weekend hype and it did. We made a nice fat take home profit and closed up any and all exposure. Thanks to the lies ;-)

    Now no more exposure there.

Now we expect a crash and gold/silver to climb. If so, our master plan is doing well. If not…we are still doing fine. Mainly because we planned for this more then 6 years ago and have placed ourselves pretty darn well. Debt free.

I truly wish we did not need to distrust the govt so much to need to do all this but…such is life

If the market crashes big time we might buy in at a 4:1 gain down the road…. rather than a 4:1 loss.

A slight revision on the popular “two cows” thing.

U.S. Democracy: You have two cows. One’s masquerading as a bull, but your mainstream media doesn’t tell you that. They breed. You have eight calves. The banker takes them all, because your farm just got foreclosed. Two years later, the banker takes all the meat and milk that the bulls and cows provide. He sells the milk and meat, and gives you an IOU check, promising full payment to you for the amount of milk and meat sold. You never receive a penny.

We don’t even know if the 234K jobs are real. Why is it that we never hear of companies hiring on the TV or radio? A Google search reveals that almost noone, other than McDonald’s, has hired in the last 2 years.

A gov’t that lies about WMDs is capable of lying about jobs, I would think.

  • shypuffadder

It is amazing how easily people can be convinced not to believe their own eyes. Of course, that is assuming that their eyes are open. I am stunned when I hear people that have been laid off talk about getting another job but can’t figure out why it is taking so long. Seriously, they really don’t get it. The majority in this nation are still clueless and that is why they are so easily fooled.

These “improved” unemployment statistics are laughable.

This article outlined a lot of what I was thinking. I turned on the news, and all this crowing about “the unemployment is going down!”

Then I went to real sources like ZeroHedge and the Market Ticker, to get the side which actually uses numbers and looks closer at the reports. And it confirmed what I suspected.

The unemployment is not going down because jobs are being created at a massive rate, the number of people looking for work is massively shrinking.

So, if we have all the current unemployed not looking for work, does this mean the unemployment rate will be 0%??

and also these idiots in the “mainstream” media, what happens when less people work?? less tax revenues! and just because the rate appears to be low because of how its being calculated, those people who held jobs pre-2008 and still unemployed yet arent’ looking for work, do these idiots in the media think those people are celebrating the 8.3% numbers??? NEWSFLASH MSM: those people still do not have work!!!(just because they aren’t looking is irrelevant)

I’m convinced those who belive the Obama lies and the media that covers for him, are going to be running around bewildered when the crash comes, and its coming… 15.5+ trillion in debt, no growth, less taxes, higher gas prices the economic reckoning is coming. And those that believed the lies and incomplete truth by the MSM, I do not feel sorry for at all. I really don’t.

I know I trusted the MSM very much just a few years back, I see them all as an extension of the administration, all of them liars. I don’t listen to them or trust them.

Those lies cost over 40,000 dead and wounded Americans, a TRILLION dollars of BORROWED money squandered on an unnecessary war, and a MILLION dead innocent Iraqi citizens….why can not you believe these economic numbers????

    • Highspeedloafer

It sounds like somebody has upset a lib a little bit.

  • rustysyringe

I used to feel the same way about the number, “not participating in the workforce”. I used to have a problem with the way that was figured into the equation, much like you post here. I used to feel that it was not right for the numbers to be calculated this way.

I have since changed my mind on this and do feel this it is a fair categorization of people. Because that is what they truly are deciding to do, not participate.

You see, there are jobs these “not participating” people can take. But they are choosing not to. They are lower paying jobs, entry level jobs, and many people feel these jobs “are beneath” them.

Now I will admit that it is very difficult to go from 60-70k a year to 30-36k a year. That is a very difficult pill to swallow.

I can certainly empathize with the reasoning for these people who “choose not to participate” because of this. I was one of them. It lasted for about 30 days for me. Then I realized that I cannot afford to feel sorry for myself, I cannot afford to have too much pride to take a lowly position, I cannot afford to NOT PARTICIPATE.

I quickly came to the epiphany that the bottom line is, the bill collectors don’t give a fuck if you had such and such great job before or have such and such great experience but no one will pay you such and such anymore.

So I took one of these low paying jobs, went form 75k a year to 30k a year, experienced severe financial hardship in doing so. But I pulled up the boot straps, started an entry level position, enrolled in school again (btw, most of these low paying jobs also offer tuition reimbursement/assistance as part of the benefits) and set out with a new goal in mind. I have now completed a masters degree, have a second bachelors degree, and am now back in a position earning over 60k a year.

And its all because I CHOSE to participate in the workforce. I didn’t like it, I sure bitched about it A LOT, I came to many websites and blogs like this one and commiserated with others, but in the end I realized I cannot afford to NOT PARTICIPATE.

If you can afford it, more power to you. If you can afford to sit back and wait/hope a 75k position falls into your lap again, good for you. The government has decided there is a category/statistic that is assigned to you. And yes, it is an accurate description.

  • sharonsj

Some guy on CSpan explained that the number included both part time and temporary jobs. This seems to be the future of employment: no more full time jobs with decent pay and benefits.

One of my friends at age 68 went back to work so as not to lose her house and ended up with a job that will only last 4 months with no benefits, no health insurance, no paid days off, and only half an hour for lunch. I know other people who work as “contract” help so the employer won’t have to deal with payroll paperwork let alone benefits. That means the employee bears the tax burden and isn’t eligible for unemployment.

  • Concerned Citizen

Employment figures are as useful as measuring GDP on the sole quantity of the goods sold, without taking their value into account.

What those employment figures do not reveal is the value (=salary) of the jobs that have allegedly been created. A burger-flipping or Wal-Mart-greeter job that pays starvation wage is not nearly as valuable as a solid manufacturing job, but no distinction is made in the figures. I wonder what the product of the number of newly created jobs and their average salary (median actually better) would be…

And what I can tell you is, the majority of the jobs pay around $8/hr and very even pay 9 or 10 dollars let alone 15-20…

And I’m talking about food/beverage sector (Restaurants/Fast Food), hospitality industry (Resorts/Hotels)and retail (Wal-Mart, Target, Home Depot, Lowes, etc…)

I know, because I have worked in all 3 industries and you will be hard pressed to realistically find a job that pays more than $10/hr… (Without a college degree) and I think even with…

Good point, to further that, how about places like Labor Ready that take a group of people to go work for that day, and pay them that day? Just because they work one day doesnt mean they are in secure positions. My husband had to do that when we moved up to Oregon while we stayed in a crappy hotel with scary neighbors doing scary things. Eating Ramen and potatoes out of the microwave. Dont know how we would have survived without my brother moving us in with him for a few months.

  • plato’s pug

Yes, I was one of those counted as “not in the labor force” In fact, I’m now working abroad, since being unemployed for almost 2 years.
It is a huge sacrifice to leave family and pets behind to take a job may not last beyond 1 year.

The stats of 8.4% are just plain lies;in fact it’s more like 22%, and that is a conservative figure. The garbage about all the retail hiring for the Xmas season, as well as consumer spending (which was done mainly by morons using their credit cards) is all an illusion. Nothing will help this broken economy, except a return to manufacturing base, which just isn’t going to happen.
Europe is taking a beating too, but at least in their media the numbers they put out for UE don’t lie as much as the MSM in the U.S.

@Gary2babble – How will tax the rich create a job. Your prognosis is pure fantasy. Good paying jobs are created in the manufacturing industry but these have been moved to foreign lands – the cause – high taxes (not just federal but the state as well), overbearing regulations (EPA, NLRB, etc.) and union contracts that are worse than the tax burden and regulations put together.

Times are changing, and not for the better.

Employment is getting worse. Several times in the last few weeks people have mentioned to me how easy it is getting to commute – nobody’s on the roads anymore! The downward spiral has started.

I can only suggest laying in provisions and items you can swap for what you need.
And maintain a low profile: anything you’ve openly acquired that might be useful in the future might be taken from you by force, either criminal or governmental.

One of the sources of free-dried foods now ships in unmarked containers, although the UPS guy might remember where he delivered a year’s supply of survival food, especially when his kids cry out in hunger.

I do suggest visiting the $1 stores and getting certain basics to hoard. Canned foods with expirations as far out as possible. Even suntan lotion, vasoline, burn ointment, hemerrhoid cream, toothpaste and other non-deteriorating trifles would be useful for trading for food or gas.

If you believe, as I do that at some point, electricity might be curtailed or even rationed, get yourself a propane-powered generator. You’ll find that propane can be bought just about anywhere, and when gas stations have gas, but can’t pump it, you’ll be able to keep the lights on a little longer.

Finally, I laid a grand worth of quarters and dimes (still in bank boxes) since I can always return them for 100% credit, but I suspect they’ll be more trusted than the greenback in an emergency (maybe not, but it’s not a purchase but a change of form).

Depends on what you count and who is counting. People can look around and see there is no recovery and no sudden hiring spree….they also can tell more than 10% are unemployed.

    Math really is that important.

That is either an alternate reality (a la The Twilight Zone), or we are all living in Paraguay. I can’t tell which though. It certainly isn’t the America I was born and raised in.

The only some jobs are being repatriated to the U.S. is because U.S. job wages are declining. Any jobs that return to U.S. factories and offices are being established here for a short term effort to make short term profits for the employers prior to their being….AUTOMATED. There is no need for foreign offices and factories if domestic offices and factories undergo 100% automation. Moreover, the true unemployment rate is around 20% and will only grow larger and larger. Just read Jeremy Rifkin’s The End of Work (1994) and William Brain’s Robotic Nation.

Billy Joel seen this coming three decades ago with “Allentown”. The body politic bought the “Service Economy” for two reasons. One is before their very eyes it functioned: Two any deep thought about it shown the individual that all was not well. The public as they generally are preferred to accept good news because it’s the path of least resistance. The “Live For Today” types set themselves up like sheep to slaughter feeding both the debt machine and the illusion until reality buried in their mind two decades previous reappeared. The majority presently have the same thought process only accepting the most desirable reports and predictions. The alternative is just too bleak and with no planning and few options reality is too upsetting. This is why “Yes we can”, “Hope” and “Change” will in the end fuel an election victory. They may vote for another speaker but the words are the same.

Stan, who is a close friend of the family and has intimate knowledge of the fed and the markets, issued us a warning around Thanksgiving stating that things will be drastically different this year. I was talking to him this morning and he had this to say(paraphrased):

“In my 40 years dealing in the financial system, I have never see anything like this. For the markets to shrug-off news that in any other time would be viewed at catastrophic and gain traction on economic data that is mediocre at best tells me that we are nearing a dramatic end to this bloated and unsustainable cycle.”

Like I said when I mentioned Stan a few months ago on this blog, this man is NOT a “conspiracy theorist” and generally doesn’t buy into the “doom and gloom” scenario. He has been involved in the financial industry for over 4 decades and once held a seat on the Chicago Stock Exchange, so his analysis is usually viewed as quite credible.

I’m not going to bang the “The End is Near” drum, but in the coming months I don’t think it would be a bad idea to stay vigilant and have a plan for you and your family. Just my humble opinion. God Bless, peace out, live long and prosper….

    • Rodster

We’ve seen this same scenario play out in Iceland and this time it’s going to happen worldwide.

The proverbial s##t will hit the fan when all of the markets realize this is a global Iceland scenario. That’s when all the big players take their chips off the table and cash in.

What people don’t realize is that very powerful socialists such as George Soros is wanting all of this to happen and is encouraging it. He makes billions overnight from each crash and he gets closer to his fantasy New World Order.

What amazes me is how a National Socialist like Gary2 never mention taking money from Soros, Buffet, Immelt, Pelosi (who by the way is very wealthy) and other liberal/socialists?

    • 007

I am convinced the stock market is being propped up and manipulated by the Federal Reserve. It has shown no hesitance to manipulate the bond and real estate market. It probably just sees propping up the stock market as a necessity to avoid general chaos and a loss of consumer confidence. It would be easy for the FED to buy stocks or futures through third parties.

      • TJ in Atlanta

According to some economic theory the federal can get people to spend more money from “the wealth effect”. If people FEEL wealthier then they will spend more money. So there is academic basis for your thinking. One problem with this approach is that the federal reserve is “stealing from granny” to “give to Goldman”. The implication is they are taking money from savers (by not paying any interest) to force the savers into riskier investments. IF there is a major market correction (always a possiblity but not certainty) a lot of people (and pensions) will get hurt.

      • BenjiK

I too have suspected the fed and/or other government-backed entities of large-scale stock buys, especially since 2008. Also, let’s not forget about the fed’s “Plunge Protection Team”.

So knowing all of this, why do you keep on voting and electing the same Demopublican candidates? Like JR above mentioned total ownership of Obama by Goldman Sachs, the same can be applied to all the Republican candidates, with one exception, and that is Ron Paul. He is the man both parties fear. That’s because he wants to kill the Federal Reserve Board! What the hell are you going to lose that you haven’t lost with Obama, and with Gingrich, Romney, and Santorum!

    • mondobeyondo

I don’t know. You tell me why the masses constantly vote for the “same old same old”.

We vote for our presidential candidates the same way we vote for contestants on “American Idol”. Maybe that explains it.

    Another side note:
I bought a cockatiel at a swap meet this afternoon. I asked the person selling it, “can these birds talk?” — and she said “yes they can”.

“So how can you tell if it’s a male or female?” I asked.

    “Ohhh, you’ll know soon enough.”

So, I take the bird home, and put it in a cage once inhabited by my now deceased lovebird. The first question out of its mouth was – “do these feathers make me look fat??”

    Yep. Definitely a female.

    Okay, back on topic!

The Unemployment number is a big joke. It is likely that the labor dept is making the number look better than it actually is in order for Barak Obama to be reelected. That is going to be his saving grace to be President for another 4 years.

  • chiller

Alls one need do is go to dailyjobcuts.com and compare new jobs and lost jobs and you’ll see the lies.

  • godsofold

They won’t stop putting out fraudulent statistics. Why? Because the numbers have to look good for Obama’s reelection. I’ve read before that throughout our history, presidents that have over 9% unemployment ratings, usually don’t get reelected. So the current administration will do what it has to, to manipulate the numbers for their own good, regardless of what’s true. They’ll continue to smile in our faces and tell us everything is fine as the ship sinks.

DaytoDay wrote that most jobs pay $7.25-$10.00/hr and that “your lucky if you can find a $10/hr job…” I think you will be lucky if you can even find a job that pays the minimum wage. And it’s not only in the USA that it’s like this. Canada is the same. I know because I’m a dual citizen who had to move back with my husband (who is Canadian) to Canada as we both lost our jobs in the USA. It’s not much different up here, so don’t believe those stories that Canada is doing better. It’s not. They are just covering up things better I think. The only jobs I see that might pay better than minimum wage are working in mines, and who wants to do that until retirement age? It seems the only jobs left are those benefiting rich people, picking diamonds and gold. We’re all screwed as far as I can tell. Every single one of us. I think the future is going to be really really bad, and people just are not prepared at all for what is coming.

  • Richard Heiville

    Hi people,
here in France, we are facing same issue with unemployment statistics.
    Government lies about the figures.
around 10% of unemployment officially, but in fact it’s over 20% !

They use a restricted definition of who is unemployed and who is not. (the same one USA uses or so i suppose because it’s from International Labour organisation).
If you work one hour only a month, you aren’t really counted in unemployment figures.

We are facing the same problem than in USA:
no more decent jobs, most job actually are now part time and temporary ones.

  • Me

Right after the election, regardless of who wins, two things will happen instantaneously:

    1. They stop lying, and
    2. They nuke Iran.

Unless of course they nuke it now to prevent elections, but I don’t think we’re quite that far down the rabbit hole just yet, and besides which… contrary to popular opinion, it no longer matters who gets elected.

America’s leading industry, America’s most profitable business, is still the manufacture, packaging, distribution and marketing of b-t. High-quality, grade-A, prime-cut, pure, American b-t. And the sad part is, that most people seem to have been indoctrinated to believe that b-t only comes from certain places, certain sources: advertising, politics, salesmen – not true. B-t is everywhere. B-t is rampant. Parents are full of s-t, teachers are full of s-t, clergymen are full of s-t, and law enforcement people are full…of…s-t – this entire country. This entire country is completely full of s-t, and always has been. From the Declaration of Independence to the Constitution to the Star-Spangled Banner, it’s still nothing more than one big steaming pile of red, white and blue, all-American b-t. Because, think of how we started. Think of that. This country was founded by a group of slave-owners who told us all men are created equal. Oh yeah, all men, except for Indians and n-s and women, right? I always like to use that authentic American language. This was a small group of unelected, white, male, land-holding, slave-owners who also suggested their class be the only one allowed to vote. Now, that is what’s known as being stunningly and embarrassingly full of s-t. And I think Americans really show their ignorance when they say they want their politicians to be honest. What are these f-n’ cretins talking about? If honesty were suddenly introduced into American life, the whole system would collapse!

Well it’s GREAT news to the liberals when 1.2 MILLION people give up looking for work all together because they are no longer unemployed.

  • TJ in Atlanta

Regrettably there is a lot of truth in this article. I’m a financial advisor by trade (for over 25 years) and teach economics and finance. For over the last year virually every credible economist (e.g. Pimco Asset Management) has said the US needs to create between 200,000 and 250,000 jobs per month to have a drop in the unemployment rate. Yet we have seen the rate come down (mysteriously) from 9.1% just a few months ago to 8.3% last month. These numbers are hard to justify by any stretch.

  • http://www.restoretherepublic.org Nick

I wonder if the numbers posted count the over 258,000 new immigrants that have been coming into the country over the last few years.
Even if that is counted as a family of 4, and one bread we have an additional 65,000 people looking for work.
By the way the immigration limit is only 1.2 million/yr., but the government has been allowing 3.2 million/yr. legally enter without a change in the law.

The destruction of jobs is permanent and escalating. The true unemployment rate is 22% and will elevate by 10 percentage points every ten years. The governments cannot or will not help the unemployment and the private sector is Hell bent on automating all jobs out of greed for money previously paid to human workers. The middle and lower classes must unite and economically secede from the upper class economy. The lower and middle classes must form their own economy in the form of Democratic Workplaces (DWP’s) where all income is shared equally and where there are no CEO’s, board of directors, stockholders and investors. Vocation schools need to be established to train the unemployed to work and earm money in the DWP’s. Eventually the middle and lower classes must form their own banks that print their own money, interest free, based on gold, silver, platinum and precious gems. There is no other way.

  • worried

the reason unemployment rate in the United States had fallen to 8.3 percent. Is due to the fact that the people that was on unemployment their money ran out.
So there really is no big need to party. we are still hurting for jobs. I pray for everyone that lost their jobs that God help them find a new job. even if it pays less than what they lost.

The bank and gov are to blame as well for constantly lying to the public to get them to continue the use of credit which has doomed the world.
