Living In A Van Down By The River – Time To Face The True State Of The Middle Class In America

van-public-domainDo you remember the old Saturday Night Live sketches in which comedian Chris Farley portrayed a motivational speaker that lived in a van down by the river?  Unfortunately, this is becoming a reality for way too many Americans.  As the middle class has shrunk and the cost of living has increased, a lot of people have decided to quite literally “live on the road”.  Whether it is a car, a truck, a van, a bus or an RV, an increasing number of Americans are using their vehicles as their homes.  Just recently, someone that I know took a trip down the west coast of the United States and stayed at a number of campgrounds along the way.  What she discovered was that a lot of people were actually living at these campgrounds.  Of course there are some that actually prefer that lifestyle, but many others are doing it out of necessity.

Earlier this week, posted a story about “the van life”.  One of the individuals that they featured was a recent graduate of the University of Southern California named Stephen Hutchins.  Without much of an income at the moment, he decided that the best way to cut expenses was to live in his van

“The main expenses are insurance for the van, which is like $60 a month,” said Hutchins. “Then, I have a storage unit for like $60.”

That puts his monthly rent at $120. The van cost him just $125 at an auction.

Living in a van is certainly not the most comfortable way to go, and many of you are probably wondering how he performs basic tasks such as cooking and bathing.  Well, it turns out that he makes extensive use of public facilities

He showers at the gym, cooks on a portable stove on a sidewalk (he stores his butane at his friends’ place nearby) and uses wifi at nearby coffeeshops.

For a while such a lifestyle may seem like “an adventure”, but after a while it will start to get really old.  And not a lot of women are going to be excited about dating a man that lives in a van, and you certainly wouldn’t want to raise a family in a vehicle.

Sadly, just like during the last economic crisis many Americans are getting to the point where staying in their homes may not be an option.  Just check out the following excerpt from a recent New York Post article entitled “The terrifying signs of a looming housing crisis“…

The number of New Yorkers applying for emergency grants to stay in their homes is skyrocketing — as the number of people staying in homeless shelters reached an all-time high last weekend, records show.

There were 82,306 applications for one-time emergency grants to prevent evictions in fiscal 2016, up 26 percent from 65,138 requests the previous year, according to the Mayor’s Management Report.

I put a couple of phrases in that quote in bold because I really wanted you to notice a couple of things.

First of all, it is very alarming to hear that the number of New Yorkers staying in homeless shelters “reached an all-time high” last weekend.  I thought that we were supposed to be in an “economic recovery”, but apparently things in New York are rapidly getting worse.

Secondly, the fact that applications for emergency grants are up 26 percent compared to last year is another indication of how rough things are right now for average families in New York.  We all remember what happened when millions of families lost their homes to foreclosure across the nation during the last financial crisis, and nobody should want to see a repeat of that any time soon.

During this election season, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton would like all of us to believe that the economy is doing just fine, but that is not true at all.  Even using the doctored numbers that the government gives us, Barack Obama is solidly on track to be the only president in all of U.S. history to never have a single year of 3 percent GDP growth, and he has had two terms to try to do that.

Gallup CEO Jim Clifton is also quite skeptical of this “economic recovery”, and he recently authored an article on this subject that is receiving a tremendous amount of attention.  The following is how that article begins

I’ve been reading a lot about a “recovering” economy. It was even trumpeted on Page 1 of The New York Times and Financial Times last week.

I don’t think it’s true.

The percentage of Americans who say they are in the middle or upper-middle class has fallen 10 percentage points, from a 61% average between 2000 and 2008 to 51% today.

Other surveys have found that it is even worse than that.

For example, a Pew Research Center study from the end of last year discovered that the middle class in America has now actually become a minority in this country.

Here are some other numbers that Clifton included in his article

  1. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the percentage of the total U.S. adult population that has a full-time job has been hovering around 48% since 2010this is the lowest full-time employment level since 1983.
  2. The number of publicly listed companies trading on U.S. exchanges has been cut almost in half in the past 20 years — from about 7,300 to 3,700. Because firms can’t grow organically — that is, build more business from new and existing customers — they give up and pay high prices to acquire their competitors, thus drastically shrinking the number of U.S. public companies. This seriously contributes to the massive loss of U.S. middle-class jobs.
  3. New business startups are at historical lows. Americans have stopped starting businesses. And the businesses that do start are growing at historically slow rates.

Once upon a time, America was the land of opportunity.

We were the place where anything was possible and where entrepreneurship was greatly encouraged.

But today we strangle small businesses to death with rules, regulations, red tape and taxes.

If we want a stronger middle class, we need to create a much better environment for the creation of small businesses.  Small business ownership often lifts individuals into the middle class, and small businesses have traditionally been the primary engine for the growth of good jobs in this country.

If the middle class continues to shrink, poverty will continue to rise.  Previously I have written about how the number of homeless children in the United States has shot up by 60 percent since the last economic crisis, and Poverty USA claims that a staggering 1.6 million children slept either in a homeless shelter or in some other form of emergency housing during 2015.

If you will be sleeping in a warm bed in a comfortable home tonight, you should be thankful.  An increasing number of Americans are sleeping in tent cities, in their vehicles or on the streets.  These hurting people deserve our love, our compassion and our prayers.

    One of the odd things to me about America is how often we can find money to help everyone but Americans. Time after time we are told it’s our duty to help those in need in other countries while here at home we ignore those in need. It’s rather odd.

    The jobs being created today are not the sort of jobs that allow people to prosper. They are low wage jobs that either require you to live in a van, live with parents or depend on some form of government assistance. We have been told to only follow the unemployment rate and the jobs created numbers. Those are important but it also matters the type of jobs they are. Right now they are not the bread winner jobs that allow one to start a family or allow you to save, they are instead low paying jobs.

      After the crash of 08 the Banksters / Elite were given ???Trillions (Yes that is a T) in ‘bailouts’ that were supposed to ‘fix’ the crisis. It did not. It was NOT supposed to. If that amount of money had been distributed to the people of the nation they could have paid off EVERY personal debt they had! Think of it! No mortgage payment. No car payment. No student loan payment. (And with all the mortgages paid off there would have been no more ‘crisis’) The bankers would still have gotten their ‘crisis ‘ help, and more importantly the people in need would have benefited instead of just the wealthy.

      Your entire income to do with as you please? Every one would been buying toys, cars, second homes etc. like crazy. It would have created MILLIONS of jobs! We would be in the midst of the greatest economic boom we have ever known! They could have done this, BUT CHOSE NOT TO because economic boom was not the goal, The weakening of our nation, the eleimination of the middle class, and the domination of the serfs was the endgame.

      This all was just one step closer to globalism and the coming reign of Antichrist. It is coming. Face it! The mark of the beast will separate the wheat from the tares during a time of great tribulation and upheaval. Horrible persecution is coming to the Christians of America. SOON! We are going through it. They will be NO rapture to whisk you away. You better cry out now for the faith and endurance to make it through. He that endures to the end the same shall be saved.

    Farley’s skit on SNL. Funny stuff. Yet, in reality, anything but…… . Many things playing into this scenario. Many things going back to this, greed. While I am for labor unions, there are few of them left that actually help the ones they’re supposed to help. Several to most of them are in bed with the companies. While I say the corporations that can should compensate their employees x amount of dollars per hour……. I also understand many of the smaller companies simply can’t afford it. Exemptions should be made for them. If ones such as Henry Ford were more prevalent in our business society (and society in general), there wouldn’t be a need for a minimum wage. Morals/ethics disappearing….. and the result is not good for all of us.

    The Fed did not raise interest rates so American economy is moving along at a snails pace. All the factory jobs are gone so that moved the line in the pay scale up for the “middle class”. I see where Obummer said America will take more refugees….. he can’t even take care of the homeless people we have now. You take care of family first, in this case the Americans who need it.

        Republicans have not “controlled” the Supreme Court for many decades. As for the legislative branch, the Senate was Democrat-controlled from 01-03 and from 07-09. The House was under Democrat control from 07-09.

        While it is true that Mr. Bush was a Republican, many of his policies were not in keeping with conservative ideals.

      However; in all reality, we are just before the real time of sorrows. Yes, some have some bad things happening to them, and I for one have compassion and love for the little helpless, innocent Syrian children that have been dragged into this horrible mess because of ignorance and hate, linked to a false religion.

      Our Divine Rainbow Covenant supersedes all worldly proclamations and confusion, right up till Christ makes His one appearance whereby…”every eye shall see”.
      No secret return hiding behind the clouds of the atmosphere.
      But a glorious and triumphant return with a shout that shakes the Heavens and Earth, and with “clouds” of angels and saints of before. Clouds of holy beings that can not be numbered. Not little puffy atmospheric clouds that come and go away like a whisper, like a pre-trib rapture event that is only on paper.

      I wish to address some concerns, IF your talking about the New Millennium.

      1. “The earth will produce bumper crops every season.”
      Reply: Actually that is conditional – Zechariah 14 states (during the Millennial reign) that if nations do not come to Jerusalem to observe the feast of tabernacles, God will punish them with no rain.

      2. “There will be no sickness or death just as God intended at the beginning.”
      Reply: During the 1,000 year reign of the Messiah there will be death and births. Its only after the Day of Judgment AFTER the thousand years will that be true.

      3. “No more decisive governments which happen to be one of the main obstacles to peace and prosperity.”
      Reply: Actually scripture states the Messiah will reign with a rod of iron and that there will be nations that don’t obey God (ref feast of tabernacles observance). If they don’t obey God it can easily been seen that there will be divisive and possibly inhibit peace and prosperity.

      Its interesting that during the Millennial reign there is mention of the Messiah ruling with a rod of iron but after the great judgment scripture shows peace after all is said and done and we enter into eternity with Him.

      Something to think about.

      It worked really well for those Christians who were preaching the same thing at the turn of the first millenium AD.

        God has always acted decisively when executing judgement on the nations and those who have screwed every thing up will face Gods’ wrath at Armageddon if they don’t submit to Gods’ King Designate Jesus Christ during the great tribulation that is upcoming.
        It will indeed take an extinction level event like the great tribulation to pierce the hearts of and wake up many who are straddling the fence of human rule or Gods’ rule
        And yes many first century Christians did suffer death for their faith and preaching work , and many may have thought that Gods’ Day was imminent
        however God has His timetable for working out His purposes
        Are we now standing at the beginning of this momentous time in history?
        At the very least ,Gods’ Kingdom come is as close as our last breath.

    We’ve heard the psycho-babble admonition not to be “enablers” to others so they won’t become dependent on our assistance. We apply that rule to our own folks, but for everyone who is not a citizen, including illegal aliens, Middle Eastern Muslims, and every third world nation, we dole our resources out like water during a flood.

    I just returned from a trip to Colorado. I bought two shirts while I was out there and stuck them in my luggage. I got home and checked my bags this morning I found two TSA inspection notices and no new shirts. I just can not believe why anyone would bother with stealing two shirts? I flew to the Philippines before and no one stole anything out of my luggage. Sorry for the rant. Obviously TSA is not watching over the luggage if people can take things out, they can also put stuff in.

      Republicans “lead” from 2000 through 2008. When the boy wonder left office the economy was losing 800,000 jobs per month. You seem to forget that if Republicans did not eff up so badly the black guy would never had gotten elected in the first place!

      Republicans are just as bad as Democrats. If you think otherwise you are purely delusional. Maybe it’s time for right wing military style dictatorship. Everyone hates Congress. Everyone loves the military. It can’t be any worse than what we have now.

So it blew up while Bush was in office and already doing his best to mess us up in other ways… followed by Obama who not only continued Bush’s policies, expanded them and created an Isis for us to fight.           If I might add here, you are very quick to denigrate the fervently held religious beliefs that others evidence here. All too often, when we “stink”, we do not smell our own odors. Unfortunately, the powerful elite running this country disagree and do everything in their power to crush small businesses and competitors. All with the blessing of Congress and the President, of course. The middle class doesn’t stand a chance against a rigged system.

    The problems with our country are not rocket science. The lobbyist force the politicians to pass laws creating cartels and monopolies in exchange for campaign financing.

    An old English judge once said: ‘Necessitous men are not free men.’ Liberty requires opportunity to make a living – a living decent according to the standard of the time, a living which gives man not only enough to live by, but something to live for.

    For too many of us the political equality we once had won was meaningless in the face of economic inequality. A small group had concentrated into their own hands an almost complete control over other people’s property, other people’s money, other people’s labor – other people’s lives. For too many of us life was no longer free; liberty no longer real; men could no longer follow the pursuit of happiness.

    Against economic tyranny such as this, the American citizen could appeal only to the organized power of government. Big GOVERNMENT is the only answer to our problems.

    I lived in a 26 foot camp trailer for a year when I was younger to save money for my first house. It allowed me to bank about 90% of my income.

    I refuse to feel bad for those individuals who squandered their incomes. Cell phones and service, cable TV, expensive cars, vacations…several a year, spoiled children, overpriced college to be cool not educated, eat out 5 or 6 days out of 7, designer clothes, tattoos, jewelry, booze, drugs, weed, porn….Sorry, I just can not feel bad for their self-imposed situation. For the truly hurting that lived an honest, frugal lifestyle and life beat them, I do feel for them but they are the exception here. People need to grow up and realize that the world is not here to serve them. It is not all about them. If you do not want to live in a tent, or van, or under the bridge, in most every case, you don’t need to but you do have to work and watch every penny you spend. Sorry, no one ever said life was easy…or always enjoyable.

      We NEED children in this movement. There are plenty of great girls, but most are at Church-Orthodox or Traditional Catholic for starters. Marriage minded and simple with no grand illusions.

    I have a friend/co-worker who lives in his van; his house was repo’d, after 3 bouts with cancer emptied his bank account. He keeps a $10/month membership to a national gym chain where he can wok out and use the showers, etc. Sometimes he will stay on at customers houses as a “housesitter” with their permission, while he is doing work on their places, and the owners are away.

    I share this only to point out that my experiences mirror that of the article – he’s not the only one I know on the edge. More and more people that by any measure would be considered good, productive members of society are finding it difficult to live a “normal” life and are turning to alternative lifestyles. It’s not a matter of not being able or willing to work, he has all the work he wants at a decent wage. But once you get behind… it opens your eyes to the Grand Scam.

    The corporate “takers” -banks, mortgage lenders, gov’t bureaucracies – take more than they give by skimming away profits are partly to blame. And political ambition – which leads to inaccurate reporting of the reality on the street in the real economy. Of course no president wants their legacy to be one of economic failure, so the methods of measurement are fudged, books cooked, etc. How can we act to change things for the better, when we have no idea where we really stand?

      Driving a truck is great for those down on their luck AND it offers free housing too! Live in your truck, at least during the week, or more if you need to and the average salary is 50k+.

    I know most people can not live by themselves. Time to live together in communities of like minded helpful people. Not the greedy self absorbed people that wall street, Hollywood, and Washington has tried to make us into the last 60 years of tv, movie, and internet watching. All these images are just an acid on our morals..


    Any idiot who supports or believes in the fallacy that the economy is doing fine I say to them go visit your local animal shelter or non profit animal rescue. These places are over flowing with dogs and cats from people who cant afford to keep them because they have lost their job, and home. The trends I see today are just like the ones in 2008. Abandoned animals and ones turned in by folks who are torn apart because they seem to have no choice but to turn their animal in. And get this a local animal control officer took a dog away from a women who was living in her car, yup its OK if a person lives in her cart but its cruel for a dog to. AMERI K A ! woo hoo!!!!!!!!!!
    This story exposes the real economy so well. And the fact that there are blogs and how to web sites of nomadic van living is a true indicator of how great this economy AINT!!~

    There are two reasons why American politicians and NGO’s (which are basically kept afloat by American politicians) give money to everyone but Americans:

    First, because what globalization really means to politicians is global socialism. Global Socialism requires a dumbed down, politically apathetic, population with little self-efficacy. As Marx wrote, Socialism is just a way station between Capitalism and Communism. And in Communism, unlike Capitalism, there really is a 1% (the political elites) and a 99% (everyone else). No one with any long range thinking skills voluntarily enters into a system of personal slavery like Socialism or Communism.

    Second, because the only way to destroy America is from within. With Obama we got an enemy agent who is actively working to crash the system. We were once the freest nation in the world. Now we’re #11. He’s sabotaged our economy, destroyed the job market, strangled businesses with red tape from the IRS, the EPA and many other federal agencies. He gave Iran 33.6 billion in taxpayer dollars and signed an agreement to protect their nuclear program from enemies while de-commissioning our
    nuclear weapons and decimating our military. Now he’s flooding the country with, almost exclusively, Muslims from countries that despise us. And his favor ability rating keeps going up. Hello, Idiocracy. I didn’t think you’d be here quite so soon…
