Who Owns The Media? The 6 Monolithic Corporations That Control Almost Everything We Watch, Hear And Read

Back in 1983, approximately 50 corporations controlled the vast majority of all news media in the United States.  Today, ownership of the news media has been concentrated in the hands of just six incredibly powerful media corporations.  These corporate behemoths control most of what we watch, hear and read every single day.  They own television networks, cable channels, movie studios, newspapers, magazines, publishing houses, music labels and even many of our favorite websites. Sadly, most Americans don’t even stop to think about who is feeding them the endless hours of news and entertainment that they constantly ingest.  Most Americans don’t really seem to care about who owns the media.  But they should.  The truth is that each of us is deeply influenced by the messages that are constantly being pounded into our heads by the mainstream media.  The average American watches 153 hours of television a month.  In fact, most Americans begin to feel physically uncomfortable if they go too long without watching or listening to something.  Sadly, most Americans have become absolutely addicted to news and entertainment and the ownership of all that news and entertainment that we crave is being concentrated in fewer and fewer hands each year.

The six corporations that collectively control U.S. media today are Time Warner, Walt Disney, Viacom, Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp., CBS Corporation and NBC Universal.  Together, the “big six” absolutely dominate news and entertainment in the United States.  But even those areas of the media that the “big six” do not completely control are becoming increasingly concentrated. For example, Clear Channel now owns over 1000 radio stations across the United States.  Companies like Google, Yahoo and Microsoft are increasingly dominating the Internet.

But it is the “big six” that are the biggest concerns.  When you control what Americans watch, hear and read you gain a great deal of control over what they think.  They don’t call it “programming” for nothing.

Back in 1983 it was bad enough that about 50 corporations dominated U.S. media.  But since that time, power over the media has rapidly become concentrated in the hands of fewer and fewer people….

In 1983, fifty corporations dominated most of every mass medium and the biggest media merger in history was a $340 million deal. … [I]n 1987, the fifty companies had shrunk to twenty-nine. … [I]n 1990, the twenty-nine had shrunk to twenty three. … [I]n 1997, the biggest firms numbered ten and involved the $19 billion Disney-ABC deal, at the time the biggest media merger ever. … [In 2000] AOL Time Warner’s $350 billion merged corporation [was] more than 1,000 times larger [than the biggest deal of 1983].

–Ben H. Bagdikian, The Media Monopoly, Sixth Edition, (Beacon Press, 2000), pp. xx—xxi

Today, six colossal media giants tower over all the rest.  Much of the information in the chart below comes from mediaowners.com.  The chart below reveals only a small fraction of the media outlets that these six behemoths actually own….

These gigantic media corporations do not exist to objectively tell the truth to the American people.  Rather, the primary purpose of their existence is to make money.

These gigantic media corporations are not going to do anything to threaten their relationships with their biggest advertisers (such as the largest pharmaceutical companies that literally spend billions on advertising), and one way or another these gigantic media corporations are always going to express the ideological viewpoints of their owners.

Fortunately, an increasing number of Americans are starting to wake up and are realizing that the mainstream media should not be trusted.  According to a new poll just released by Gallup, the number of Americans that have little to no trust in the mainstream media (57%) is at an all-time high.

That is one reason why we have seen the alternative media experience such rapid growth over the past few years.  The mainstream media has been losing credibility at a staggering rate, and Americans are starting to look elsewhere for the truth about what is really going on.

Do you think that anyone in the mainstream news would actually tell you that the Federal Reserve is bad for America or that we are facing a horrific derivatives bubble that could destroy the entire world financial system?  Do you think that anyone in the mainstream media would actually tell you the truth about the deindustrialization of America or the truth about the voracious greed of Goldman Sachs?

Sure there are a few courageous reporters in the mainstream media that manage to slip a few stories past their corporate bosses from time to time, but in general there is a very clear understanding that there are simply certain things that you just do not say in the mainstream news.

But Americans are becoming increasingly hungry for the truth, and they are becoming increasingly dissatisfied with the dumbed down pablum that is passing as “hard hitting news” these days.

So what do you think about the state of the mainstream media?  Please feel free to leave a comment with your opinion below….

  • Lennie Pike

This makes you wonder if there is any connection between how our country was when 50 corporations controlled the media and how it is today. It seems to me like it actually was about 1983 when things started going down hill at a fast rate of speed.

The people who control it are members of the same group who control everything else. Their master plan is perfectly on schedule since there hasn’t been a single speed bump placed in their way.

A free internet won’t last much longer probably. Security to protect us from people that want to harm us will probably be the reason given.

Thanks for another excellent and important article.

    • NewMindset

You predicted it brother but people are still JUST waking up.

  • Mike

I used to watch those financial pundits on cable all the time, the Maria Bartiromo’s and Jim Cramers of the world. I thought they knew their stuff. After the crash of 08′, I started wondering how these “experts” didn’t see it coming, and realized these folks are paid to tow the corporate line. They are there to maintain the status quo. Even while the ship is sinking, they keep saying “the market fundamentals are sound” or “the recession is over”. Then cut to commercial, there’s someone selling “no money down” mortgages.

  • http://aipnews.com lifepath

    Hello!

About 18 months ago, I had to file complaint with DirecTV about one of their commercials. Would you believe DirecTV (not one of their advertisers) was promoting Euthanasia!!! They spelled it “Youthanasia,” and ultimately claimed that the term was taken from a long-ago record album. What they were doing was attempting to desensitize DirecTV audience members to Euthanasia (abortion of old people). This is a hot concept among people who run in circles with George Soros–many of whom may be in the mainstream media business.

DirecTV people called me and taped me, and I told them that I was simply never going to watch that commercial again. I told them to remove the commercial or I’d cancel my account. They preferred to lose someone’s account, which tells you how sinister was their intent. I had to spend a lot of money to break the contract–I was happy to spend every penny of it. Now, every month, they send me a letter, asking me to come back.

Here’s a hint. If your computer operates on a home network, and if you buy a little box, then for $9 a month, you can receive unlimited movies and many old TV episodes that you can watch on your living room TV!

    • s_elliott_h

“Youthanasia” was in fact a Megadeth album.. But, still, unless they were promoting a pay-per-view Megadeth concert, I don’t see the reason for dragging a band into their twisted ideals while lying to a customer.

  • Faheem Lea

Great article! Wow, 153 hours of television viewing a month? That is almost a 40 hr work week’s worth!

  • VegasBob

No wonder the Democrats have become Republican-lite and now take their marching orders from the same huge corporations that sponsor the Republicans.

The idea that there is ‘left-wing’ media bias has become a myth. The talking heads on TV have been seduced by mega-millions. Except for the dimwit Rick Sanchez, the talking heads are not going to do anything to jeopardize their positions.

In 10 years, middle class America will cease to exist. America will be owned by a couple of hundred billionaires and the rest of us will be serfs.

  • John B. Egan

Love the line “They don’t call it “programming” for nothing” …Clever…

I often wonder if the James Bond badguy and Mega-News Oligarch Elliot Carver from ‘Tomorrow Never Dies’ was based on Rupert Murdoch.

  • Frank

The only reason 9/11 truth seems like a wackjob theory is bc mainstream media wouldn’t dare to allow credible individuals like Richard Gage AIA(ae911truth.org)to go on the air to discuss all the obvious facts most americans don’t know..all 3 buildings were brought down via controlled demolition and some very simple facts would show this blatantly..the day when people like him are brought on to mainstream news is the day revolution and truth reign

  • Chris

I would argue things started to go downhill economically when Pres. Nixon took the U.S. off the Gold Standard. From that point on, it has been a steady decline.

As for this article, I watch very little tv and I only watch the network news for pretty women and entertainment (e.g. Hannity shouting matches, Chris Matthews shouting matches).

  • mondobeyondo

Watch any of the network TV evening newscasts (ABC, CBS, NBC, doesn’t matter). Now count the number of commercials for pharmaceutical items. Every other commercial is for some sleeping pill, or stay active pill, or get happy pill.

Makes you wonder just how much influence the big pharma companies have on mainstream network news. Hmmm.

  • EC-reader

The media are the least problem. The real problem is that Wall Street itself is not knowing of what it is doing (with the world economy). None of the Gurus appearing on the mass media took any effort to make a simple S.W.O.T. analysis of the Economic Crisis, for example.
Maybe this ad hoc stock trading and banking that we see at present is not the best strategy, if it could be called a strategy at all.

  • http://bajadock.wordpress.com Doc Dougherty

The internet provides so many more information resources v. the 3 television channels of my childhood.

Though MSM shovels out the same slop each day, independent thought is growing via resources like this site.

  • sharonsj

I thought there were laws against monopolies? Oh, wait, Congress doesn’t enforce those laws anymore; it might upset their corporate masters.

Good thing we have the internet for real news. Oh, wait, Congress is debating net neutrality. If that happens, only the rich will have access and the rest of us will still be waiting for information to load….

  • Jimbo

Real news is often unpleasant and corporations that comprise Mainstream Media know this. So they replace hard news with fluff to avoid taking a stock hit when people flee to other “newsotainment” stations that won’t say anything that upsets their sleep. It would be easy to blame these organizations for dumbing down real reporting, but realistically, they are giving Americans what they want, and what Americans want is not to be bothered.

  • http://www.danielrevelationbiblestudies.com Robert Stout

The main stream media giants are some of the biggest thieves and liars around. Called a major TV network in regards to their weather personnel stating the wrong features in their live report about jets leaving con trails in the sky crisscrossing the sky and leaving huge trails behind them that did not dissipate. Told them the complete truth that it is a chem trail and they did not want to admit for fear of being shut down by the FCC.

  • Bruce

Blaming republicans? Good grief! I challenge you to go and look up the billionaires and see which party they belong to.
Even Rupert Murdoch, he raised money for Clinton!
Buffett, Dell, Gates, duPonts, Kennedys, Cabots, Lodges, Rockefellers, heck I could go on and on.
Instead of being a democrat, try being an American.
BTW, no, I’m not a republican, they are the Gutless Old Party.

    • Eric

Rupert Murdoch is a well known ultra neo con republiCON. Simply showing some money going to the other side is an old safety net of covering your bets, getting people on your side and for how it ‘looks’ of course. Rupert Murdoch despises Democrats/Liberals/Independents (anyone that does not bow-down to the neo con take over agenda). Also, the Rockefellers were/are not Democrats. Super especially in the past 40 years. Maybe some of them like Andrew Jackson’s hatred of the Indians, but again and again, A.Jackson was not a democrat (especially as one is labeled today), he was the 1st in a new party called the democratic republicans. I will easily agree that both parties are to blame – big time. Though I can also admit with out cowering that the republicans have done 1,000 x more damage than the democrats. The Bu$h jr. admin alone has raped us, debted us, poisoned us, etc more than any presidency ever. It is vomit crying sad that people can’t see something as simple as the obviou$ lie of September 11th, 2001.

  • Richard

    Thank goodness for Fox.

  • Something Wicked This Way Comes

Prior to the internet, we were all force fed a diet of TV, Radio, and newsprint. And THEY decided what you saw and heard. Your knowledge was limited to whatever filtered fluff you were force fed.

I use those media sources for headlines. They have virtually no credibility. In fact, and I hate to say it- but Obama’s election and these last two years have virtually cinched it for me and I suspect that’s why the public’s perception of the MSM is hitting all time lows. They are not credible. They have become a like minded cartel- whether that was because of a mutual indoctrination in all things left, or because they are now huddled cowards- keeping jobs by saying whatever the MSM cartel wants them to say.

They won’t be able to take the internet from us though they may try. It’s too late. We’ve all had enough BS and economic pain during the last 3 years- like those car salesmen on CNBC telling us the stock market is fine. People are uniformly angry and you can’t keep sticking a pacifer in a problem of that size.

The best and most truthful economic news on the web is at ZeroHedge. When you are a servant to no one, you don’t have to filter the truth. That is the beauty of a media where we can read this blog, or ZH, and not worry if some government or business is in charge of the content.

It’s really not as big of a problem as you make it out to be. Most people don’t trust these big media companies as your research shows. And less people than ever are getting their news from these 6 corporations. The internet has leveled the playing field. There are thousands of news sources now where you can find the truth if you did hard enough. From Slate.com, Huffingtonpost.com, rollingstone.com, etc, etc, etc. We still have freedom of choice- so far anyway.

Back in 1988, I officially stopped watching television and reading normal newspapers.
I guess I cheat a bit with the television, since I have some DVD boxed sets (Babylon5, Firefly, etc), but I’ve been trying to unplug myself from media/advertisements since my honorable discharge in 1988.
Yeah, I’m vaguely aware of the media’s nonsense, but I only see a small portion of the “programming” they broadcast.

The Johnson and Johnson “family” of companies, include J&J and 249 other pharmas. Just in the J&J side is Aveeno, Olay products, Splenda, (that’s why the new “war” on obesity) Nicoderm, Nicorette, Nicotrol, Nicoderm CQ, (that bought the “war” on smokers) and thousands of other over the counter products. The “war” on smokers, you will note, does NOT lobby for stopping the selling of tobacco products, that would negate the “need” for nicotine replacement products. Object of the “war” is to get people onto the products of J&J, which, by the way, are not required by the FDA to list warnings. Follow the money. J&J’s “philanthropic arm”, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and J&J employees, current and past make up one third of the FDA Advisory Board. J&J sold $64,000,000,000 in product last year. THEY own the media and the government, lock, stock, and barrel.

Media dominates American thought (I use that term loosely) and the millionaire media broadcasters are in turn the lickspittles of a handful of billionaires, none of whom has ever heard a shot fired in anger, and none of whom evidently knows enough about history to understand what happened in 1789, 1918 and 1949, to recite just a few notable dates.

Anyone have any ideas on how to stop violent programs like RAW being shown on primetime, when vulnerable children, pre-teens and not so intellectually gifted teens are watching TV? Vulnerable children and confused pre-teens seek acceptance and want to follow versus being leaders. Why further violence, anger and solving anger issues with violence, etc.? Is it any wonder that crime rate is up? Plus how can people looking for jobs expect any employer to take them seriously if they are dressed like slobs, no shower and scruffy looking? If they have no pride in their appearance, how can anyone believe they will have pride in “a job well done”? Who started all this demeaning of humanity with the tattoos, the dreadlocks (can you imagine what lives in a head that is not thoroughly washed for a year or years?), the scruffy facial hair together with not taking a shower often? Just look at your rug, no matter how much you shampoo it, there are dangerous bacteria that stays deep inside. Ever seen a hair under a microscope? I have. Remember how people would go “yuk” if they found a hair in their food? Why then do men expect women to kiss them when in humans, every time they sneeze or if they have a reaction to certain foods or if they walk into filthy areas, or if they had oral sex, all that bacteria is caught by the facial hair. Further disgusting, you never know where or with whom those whiskers have been! Yet, the media encourages the filthy, scruffy look, casual sex, violence, depravity, nudity, etc. I am afraid of what all the violence their Halloween broadcasting and movies are going to cause. Then look at the proliferation of sex amongst teen-agers — any wonder why it is happening? It is the media and if I were President, I would forbid violent and sexually explicit shows in prime time. Children are NOT adults, they are children who have not developed good judgment. Presently, movies and shows (like Springer, et al) use violence, nudity and special effects because they do not have the intelligence to create good plots for movies or shows. So they feel the only way to attract an audience is to use violence, sex, nnudity, profanity and special effects to appeal to the 65% of the population who only finished 10th to 12th grade and/or the 67% of the population (which includes that 65%) doing manual labor jobs because they have the average 99 IQ or less. So they encourage the vulgar excesses of the lower masses and brainwash them to degrade future generations by encouraging them to let their children watch! Disgusting!

Stop Blaming 6 companies, or democrats, or republicans, or some other conspiracy, for your current situation. 95% of what happens to me is based on the decisions I make…..spend your emotional energy on improving your situation…not blaming someone or something.

  • Tom

Stella get a grip. People should control what their kids do, including TV viewing. The whole world should not be limited because you are a bad parent. why dont we eliminate the religous TV (AKA Hate Television)? I do not want my kids learning the hate and discrimination that churches throw everyday.

Sex is natural. sounds like you would do better in Iran or Afghanastan. Let freedom remain for the rest of us.

  • John Grace

I’ve watched the same contraction in Health Insurance Companies over the past 20 years. We are down to about 5 there too. A very similar story. Things that make you go hmmmmmm.

  • Alexander

Only one problem with this “conspiracy” mindset theory: Back then, you pretty much had no other choice for your news except that one or two daily newspapers, the three TV networks’ half-hour newscasts, and radio. Now, you have all sorts of channels on TV, PLUS Internet access to MILLIONS of alternatives. Don’t trust Fox News? Go to MSNBC. Think the US media is controlled by the Obama Administration? A few keystrokes will bring you the BBC, London Times, Toronto Star, Die Zeit, Japanese news, al-Jazeera, Instapundit, MoveOn, Rush Limbaugh, Media Mutters, the Wall Street Journal, the Puffington Host, the City Paper, The Other City Paper, the City Paper From Another City, the Gay Paper, the Christian Caller, the Buddhist Bumper, the Dog-Racing Form, the Cat Capers Comics, the Cuban People’s Daily Worker, the Beer Journal, the Wine Spectator, the Podunk Possum Wrapper, Pravda, the Phoenix Phoenix, the Tattooed Lady Times….. and even this blog and thousands more like it.

For all the fearmongering that the “left” creates about corporate ownership of “the media,” said corporations have far less of our collective attention, a far smaller share of actual influence upon us, less profit than before, and LESS ability to “control” what we see, not more.

Wow, articles like this always seem to encourage the tin foil hat crowd to use the comments as a soap box.

At risk of impugning the kettle’s complexion, that’s one of the most effective tools the emerging media monopoly has to deflect scrutiny.

Sometimes, ladies and gentlemen, a fnord is just a fnord.

  • Lennie Pike

Back then you had 50 corporations controlling the media, now there are 6. All foreign news organizations and news that can only be found on the internet is not the MSM, and because most Americans choose to be entertained instead of informed, when they are informed, they are not going to put much effort into their search for news other than turning on the tv for the evening news. The MSM still has the largest effect on the majority of Americans.

If you talk to enough people from a big enough sampling (I am a very busy taxi driver for 78 hours per week and they are tourists from all over the U.S.) you will know that is the truth.

Also a lot of these other sources are part of the same program.

  • AlGwhore

A shame 5 out of the six are EXTREMELY LIBERAL…. Thank god for FOX!!

As soon as enough Americans TURN THEIR SETS OFF the ‘powers that be’ will get the message.
We got rid of TV 7 years ago and are still alive to tell about it.
They are funded by ads, paid for by companies that want your money.
When people GET RID OF TV and start thinkning for themselves, the power brokers get scared.
Be part of the real revolution= THINK FOR YOURSELF.

    • Agent Rockstar

So that’s it? Just turn off my TV? So you’re telling me that because I have not watched TV all these years that I’m doing what? What am I doing with that? I’m just not giving them my attention? If we all collectively turned off our TV’s, that would do what? They would lose power? Everything would go back to the way it was before all this? I’m honestly asking, because all this sounds like a big deal, but I don’t know what that “deal” is. If I merely am existing, going to work, pay my bills, and just do it every day, how is all this affecting me? If I watch a show, and I merely appreciate it, how is that a bad thing? Or what am I missing here? It’s one thing if a religious person tells me to believe and to not live the life of a heathen (which I don’t) and another when I’m reading that the US economy is crap, should I just move to Canada? And pardon my ignorance, because it seems I’ve sheltered myself from something I didn’t even know was an issue.

  • Federalist45

Tom: I believe you have overreacted to Stella’s post. Stella appears to be venting about the culture’s constant theme of sex, violence, and anti-authority (except Big Media’s authority). I don’t see Stella as either a bad parent or an authoritarian. Rather, she appears to be a concerned parent who wants to raise her children in a world where the culture does not promote what she believes (knows?) to be evil.

You commented: “I do not want my kids learning the hate and discrimination that churches throw everyday.” Why do so many perpetuate the anti-Christian myth that churches promote hate of any kind. I have attended or been a member of many Christian churches in my adult life (I spent most of it the military, moving every 12-18 months), and I have never–NEVER–heard hateful speech of any kind. Every–EVERY–church I attended preached love of all, even enemies, and was a community leader in serving the poor. Christian charity is the bulk of American charity (even more than U.S. taxpayer charity) worldwide. Individual Christians are doing mission work based in the Gospel of Jesus Christ (a Gospel of love, sacrifice, and salvation) all over the world, helping millions of people. Nothing in the literature of any of the churches I have attended promotes hatefulness of any kind. The church doors are open for all to come and see. Why, then, do you seek to promote a lie about the churches? There is no doubt that within any church individuals sin and make mistakes: Priests molesting children; Murderers, even, who go to church (e.g., the BTK killer). But the churches themselves are quite the opposite, of course. Condemn the sin, not the sinner. Condemn the sin, not the church.

  • John Reading

Humans are mostly parasites and so they will always vote for ever-more powerful government that promises to rob their neighbors for them so they don’t have to do the dirty work for themselves. The problem is that the victims are the rich, so they defend themselves by buying the government and taking control of everything, including education and communication. The poor parasites never catch on that the rich parasites will always win control over government.

We are doomed. Blame the voters, not the politicians. It is the voters who will always vote for more violence, more control, more power in the hands of the elite. Then they will happily sit and watch Jack Bauer torture people to save the nation and watch the commercials selling them drugs for their discomforts. Seriously, we are doomed.

I have discovered much the same thing about television, and have turned it off. I wrote about it twice online at Strike The Root, here:

    http://strike-the-root.com/81/merrick/merrick1.html

    and here:

    http://strike-the-root.com/fake-tv-challenge

Television is unalterable and unsalvageable garbage.

It dawned on me that the media is concentrated in the hands of a few when I realized years ago, that all the news, TV shows (adult as well as children) and in general, ideas being put forth are so similar that it doesn’t keep my interest. The sameness seems as if created by some huge Communist/Socialist conspiracy. “Let’s all say the same things and do the same things so we can all feel comfortable and not make our neighbors feel less/more than us.”

Can any one remember the last time there was anything really interesting to watch on the boob-tube? I had to stop because it was making me a very dull boy. As I always tell people, “Just turn it off and see how much better your life can be when you start using that time more productively.” But of course, it doesn’t work. Most just go right back to it, asking it to “entertain me so I don’t have to think.”

    Sad really.

A friend of mine told be a funny story. He said when he was a kid, back in the early 50’s, his dad was a radio repair man. Well, along came the tv. So his father learned to fix them. He remembers very well how his dad said, “Son, this contraption is going to destroy America as we know it.”

    Enough said.

I know that’s a small matter, but is that the only factual error in your article? Probably not.

It is interesting to note that NBC is owned by General Electric, a large defense contractor. Perhaps this is the reason that when the antiwar Dennis Kucinich met the requirements to be included in the presidential debate that NBC changed the rules. Any NBC affiliate will not be an alternative to Fox on foreign policy issues.

Secondly, the fact that Myspace is owned by the same people who own Fox explains an experience I had on myspace. I had posted a question on a site devoted to Noam Chomsky’s ideas, asking what the American people would have had to do to stop the Iraq war before it started. The question contained no insults, no obscenities, no ethnic slurs, and no threats of violence. Yet, I soon got a form letter from Myspace telling me they were deleting one of my photos because it violated their rules on pornography. I had uploaded only one photo of myself–wearing an outfit I had worn to work and to church many times with no problem. Myspace deleted my Iraq war post but DIDN’T delete my photograph.

No wonder there is no free speech on Myspace.

  • Realdemocrat

In Australia the problem is even worse. Murdoch owns 2/3 of the print medium and a huge slice of the other news media. The recent near-defeat of the governing center-right Labor Party by the News Ltd’s favored loony-right “Liberal” party could therefore be interpreted as a massive victory by the former.

  • Mike

Funny how the brain washed christians that can’t think for themselves always say things like “we dont hate the enemy” Um, once you call your neighbors “the enemy” you are spreading hate. Christians only donate for politics and to force their beliefs on the rest of us. The greatest loss of freedom is coming from the churches.

The writing has been on the wall for quite some time now, as its quite obvious the press is no longer there to serve and inform the people but instead to dis-inform and omit the important issues from the people and if there was a person with a conscious today such as Daniel Ellsberg had back in 1971 you can bet that no big media outlet would ever publish those papers.

Played a big part as to why media had to be controlled:

Okay America, now you know how brainwashed we are. Reagan’s deregulation of the media (before only American citizens owned the media), the banking/financial institutions, industry/corporations (monopolies were broken up), and now globalization. What’s next?

Thanks to the US Supreme Court our vote may now prove worthless, this coming election will tell how powerful foreign corporations and countries money will influence the election in favor of the GOP. Isn’t it time to take a stand? We can stop buying the sponsor’s products or demand from our legislators (if they are brave enough) to really take back America from foreign investors. Beginning with the airwaves that really belong to the American public and we should take interest and demand that there be a balance in what is put on the air.

For I am destined to rule
    And regulate you

I may be vile and pernicious
    But you can’t look away

Thank G-d I don’t listen to any of their news. I may watch their programming for entertainment, albeit with a skepticism that everything is brainwashing, but that is it. I get my news from people like Michael, Alex Jones, Israel National News, etc.

I will never buy into their lies or commercials. They will have to chain me down to get me to accept things like antibiotics, vaccines, artificial sugars, packaged food, etc. They will have to imprison me in order to accept pro-gay issues, abortions, TSA, anti-homeschooling, etc.

And you know what?–I will still fight to the end, because so long as I have a free-thinking mind, even if I am dirt-poor, I will never accept their lies or meaningless life!

From the early days of radio and later TV, there were only 3 major networks and later a PBS network and controlled the public, as today, until about the 1980s when cable TV became popular and then we got all sorts of channels, but still, as before, Americans were MISINFORMED and UNINFORMED. While there were 50 corporation, the general public were just as dumb as now and we now have 6 corporations. The general public has been DUMBED DOWN by the academic system and a decline in the family unit, as well as being corrupted by degenerate moral values. Until that changes, the general public will continue to be controlled by a handful of scumbags.

I don’t have cable, If I am watching TV it’s sports and I am at the bar shooting pool so none of this surprises me. I have find my whole life that when I smell bull******, I just find other things to fill my brain with. For example I was raised Catholic by strongly Conservative parents. My stance, I love God not man made religion. I like small government, but not profiting from the poor/being greedy which is notorious with republicans. They just want to control us but tell your close friends and family about this stuff. Soon people will wake up and their house of cards will collapse just like all the other Babylons in history

  • sophisto

I have been awakened from a deep sleep and it took a while to wipe the sand from my eyes. However being awake to the medias lies and quite frankly the distorted concepts of american history taught in schools and most tv stations is kind of startling at first.
I at one time would have died for my country and what I believed. Now I would have no such part in it. I would rather die fighting for the rights of my children and our childrens children , so they will never be put to sleep on basic fundamental humanitarian concepts. We alllowed them to get the control we can take it back for them. We will be lucky if we all wake up
There is alot of wealth and yes it is centralized and controlled. As it is controlled so are we as the earthlings who live on this planet. We complacently gave these people the power to control our lives. We can non-complacently take it back.
I do not think violence is ever the answer, however imagine if everyone stopped purchasing for a set period of time. Imagine not showing up for work for a short period of time collectively as a whole. Imagine going back and strengthening our communities and making them more self sufficient. Imagine enough collective input to get control of the media to serve the publics interest. If the occupy movement had the media support we would have seen a greater impact.
It has to start smaller and more idealized. The main focus should be I and we are humans, regardless of race creed or country of origin. Humans have the right to be human and be treated as such. Currently it only seems as if we are treated as cows on their way to slaughter. Believing that they hold the keys to our future and sustenance. We are too many they are too few. They have capital power we have the power of our voice. Truth cannot lie beneath corruption, unless it is forgotten what truth really is.
Have we forgotten ??? All the worlds wise men knew that corruption was bound to happen with alot of centralized power. Why have we stopped listening to them. Fur coats are just too cool right??? Luxury and convenience should never be put before human rights, and inherent birth rite liberties. It is the greedy who have controlled us since the dawn of man, It can be the compassionate and caring and courageous who take it back…..Can we ???

The question is….WHO OWNS CONTROLLING INTEREST IN THESE COMPANIES? It is about money but when certain stories are purposely ignored on most of the networks a conspiracy besides old fashion greed is likely…The recent NDAA bill (S.1867) passed and signed was virtually ignored (especially on FoxNews)…The New Law allows for the indefinite detention BY THE MILITARY without due process anyone (including AMERICAN CITIZENS)that is deemed a “terrorist” suspect or for being “belligerent” towards the government..(protesting?) Scary Stuff! Big Brother is Watching!

  • Greyson Lallement

  • S.W.

Glad that you are bringing this up. You are so right that most Americans have absolutely no idea where their information is coming from and see no relevance to the degradation of their lives. The idea that the media companies are censoring what we read and hear is so foreign to what Americans have been led to believe that most times when I mention this, they look at me as if I’m crazy. Some even get angry at me as if I am a traitor to American ideals. The internet is our sole source of factual, unbiased, uncontrolled information and we need to safeguard it’s access. Keep up the good work!

  • Will

And so, the government tried to pass censorship laws SOPA and PIPA which, because they put the burden of policing the users on ISPs and social web sites, failed and rightly so, all forms of censorship must fail. But, not taken aback by this minor setback, Congress has revised SOPA and now calls it CISPA and this time it pays the big corporations to support it so we will have censorship after all AND our private information will be handed to the government on a golden dish. One thing I have learned about Americans is that if they can make a profit at selling out their fellow man, they will. Today the only way to safeguard your privacy and ward off government interference is to drop out of society completely as advocated in Atlas Shrugged…

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The United States reversed policy on Wednesday and said it would back launching talks on a treaty to regulate arms sales as long as the talks operated by consensus, a stance critics said gave every nation a veto.

The decision, announced in a statement released by the U.S. State Department, overturns the position of former President George W. Bush’s administration, which had opposed such a treaty on the grounds that national controls were better.

Please forward this message to others who may be concerned about the direction in which our country is headed.

“… These gigantic media corporations do not exist to objectively tell the truth to the American people. Rather, the primary purpose of their existence is to make money…”

WRONG.. ! ! To CONTROL and STEER the thinking of the American sheeple, manipulated by the owners of the Planet, the owners of the private group ob BANKS Called FEDERAL RESERVE, International Monetary Fund, World Bank… purpose .. keep them under control, being peaceful slaves to their system.

Superficially the Bank and IMF both are “supposedly owned and directed by the governments of member nations” but governments purchased, owned, paid and controlled and purchased by this guys. You don’t comply, look at Kennedy; Republicrats and Demopublicans – the same – the REAL owners are the owners of THE MONEY in those Banks, Rothschilds, Rockefellers, Morgans and a few more of their associates and minions whose main purpose and obssesion is POWER to control the world.

They print the money, that is lent to the governments, force countries into wars and get the money back into their hands when is spent in weapons, the weapons manufacturing corporations… belong to them ! ! hey not bad $ 80.000 one bomb goes BANG, more when one warplane crashes…
They are the new slave masters, today everyone that owns money to a Bank or Credit Card is OWNED by them, and those laboring at minimum wage ALSO belong to them.
The slavery system called MONEY. they print it, we are ALL enslaved by it !
WAKE UP AND SMELL THE SHIT IN YOUR OWN COUNTRY !

You seem to be the only one in this group who gets it. I would guess you have read “The Creature…”and know of Ed Griffin. There is a solution…if you care to learn how Karatbars International is offering to put control back into the hands of the people of the world through the only money in existence with intrinsic value along with a developing worldwide system within which to save and spend it. Would like to dialogue.

    • Raphael

When he was referring to them wanting money, he meant the companies as a whole. If you look at Viacom, they don’t have any news broadcasting stations. It is unlikely that they are trying to brainwash the public through Comedy Central and Nickelodeon (although it is possible).

      • James P Jr Bettes

Hmm, comedy central, and nick? What happens when you keep someone laughing? They aren’t going to be on the streets protesting. And what better way to control people than to grab them when they are kids, and subtly form their minds.

I invite you all to start listening to Max Igan on youtube. His channel is called the crowhouse. He also has a website at thecrowhouse.com

He calmly and collectively breaks down how all of this is tied together—the money, banks, media, war, etc. It was really eye opening to me. I hardly watch TV anymore, especially the news—- because it so apparent now, it’s almost laughable. And it is ladies and gents….it’s all political theatre.

Also, if you need a better grasp on the way the fed makes money, I recommend youtubing “**********”, and/ or “The Creature from Jekyll Island (by G. Edward Griffin)—or read the book.

It feels so good to be awake, and once you are, you don’t want to go back.

      youtubing “**********”?????

The US mainstream media is highly controlled by Govt. That is democracy being practiced at its best.

eg: The worst dictators in the middle east is Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. Today the people in Bahrain are risking their lives in the streets for democracy. However, not a single mainstream media reports anything.why, because they SUCK up to the US. As long as you SUCK up to the US all evil is good.

The double standards in reporting in Syria is another example. Arm the opposition to the teeth and encourage them to create chaos and in the meantime cry out loud telling the Govt. to leave. Yaa whats going to happen after that??? Is the country to be handed over to a bunch of fighters backed to the teeth by the west??? Is that going to solve all issues???

Today Libya has been destroyed with no proper governance etc. However, mainstream seems to have forgotten the present chaos after what the US wanted was done and now the oil can be controlled. who cares about good governance.

  • Luke

Why not go a step further and list also the names of the shareholders of these six giants? They sure add up to the same families, the likes of Rockefeller, Rothschild, and so on. Right?

If you all understand what has been going on, let me ask you this. Do you also know that they are trying to keep the most popular presidential candidate hidden this election. Go to youtube and listen to Ron Paul. I will be voting for Dr. Ron Paul Nov. 2012 no matter what.

    • David

Susan. If you vote for Ron Paul, you are actually voting for Obama. It is a proven fact. If the Conservative vote splits, It always favors the Liberal.
we cannot be divided. we must stand united under one conservative. This time it is Mitt. There has never been a time that it was more important to be united.

      • Flamejob5

Man i became tired of hearing that illogic over and over during the election. Whoever you voted for was in fact a vote for… WHOMEVER YOU VOTED FOR!!! Sadly, like nearly everyone else today on the Right or Left, you’ve been influenced & conditioned to think collectively (i.e. party) rather than individually.

Unfortunately for Mitt i guess his campaign strategy just couldn’t convince enough Ron Paul indiviidualists to think like uniform collectivists.

Oh.. and all the low-down, lying, arrogant neoconservative talkshow hosts sure did a knock-out job attempting to merge & unite the Paul voters with Romney’s.

If there’s any area to place blame on the election turnout, look no further than those “big tent”, “hospitable” talkshow hosts.

      • Jesse

David, when/where was this fact “proven”? I would love to research this more.

    • Jack

Don’t listen to David or Dan, Susan. How dare they tell you you’re throwing your vote away. If you vote for Ron Paul, you are voting to get out of these wars, to eliminate the debt and to drag the government kicking and screaming out of our bedrooms and our lives.

Don’t let anyone tell you that you’re throwing away your vote, Susan. You are a woman who thinks for herself–a fact that drives misogynistic trolls like David and Dan absolutely batty.

  • dan

You are correct. Even if you think it is voting for the lesser of two evils, just hold your nose and vote Romney.

    • Cameron

Oh? Vote for the Romney who plans to eliminate the Pell grant, which would make it difficult for any middle class American to attend college and get their degree? Would you like our literacy rate to drop another 15%? Also, how can one claim to fix the economy if he can’t even handle his own finances? Romney claims that he was a great governor in Massachusetts, yet he is trailing Obama in polls in that very state. He has lost the support of respected conservative news analysts and he is famous for flip-flopping on his policies. How can we expect to get anything done by putting an indecisive talking head in the White House? If you haven’t done the research, it would cost roughly another 1.3 trillion dollars to put Romney’s policies in effect. Where is that money coming from? A complete change in power will only cost us more in the long run and add to our national debt. I’m not telling you that you can’t vote for him, but maybe do the research before listening to everything the media tells you.

  • Jack

I love these people who talk about tin foil hats. Having information shoved through a bottleneck of only six not necessarily competing interests is not in the interests of democracy, any more than monopolies are good for capitalism. This is a wonderful opportunity for actual journalism to make a comeback, at first as a niche market, but inevitably, the right team of muckrakers could gain a great deal of financial backing to help them bring down the titans of misinformation

    • Bernie T.

“actual journalism” is forever dead because it relies on funding without agendas. Nowadays, any team of muckrakers will, no doubt, have its own agenda. Real journalism comes from those who choose to self-fund for the greater good, and those journalists are few and far between.

  • http://twitter.com/skibebe Terri Lynn Sullivan

Here is the one and only REAL reason USA’s young women and just as horrific men are fighting those wars…..not to protect our “flag” or “freedom & democracy”. Ignorance is bliss, but also tyranny. Yet, we keep chanting horrific marketing slogans like “freedom isn’t free”. Our Fed government is not as benign as we’ve all been programmed to believe. USA now ranks #88 in Global peace due to our perpetual aggressive foreign policy for oil, arms sales, profits in wrong direction. Those “financial weapons of mass destruction”.

We started our own newspaper, and our motto is: “The truth will set you free, but first it’ll piss you off.” (found that on facebook by the way…) In a year and half we’ve increased our circulation from 500 to 3,500 copies a month, and serve I think 6 counties – thank you, Michael, for keeping us in the REAL news!!!

Why doesn’t this blog point out the FACT that despite only making up TWO SINGLE PERCENT of the US population, it is JEWS who control EVERY SINGLE ONE of these mass media corporations?

    CBS Corporation:
Leslie Moonves – Jew – Executive Chairman
Nancy Tellem – Jew – President and Chief Executive Officer

    NBC Universal:
    Brian L Roberts – Jew – Chairman
    Stephen B Burke – non-Jew/White – Chief Executive Officer

    News Corporation:
Rupert Murdoch – possible Jew, has Jewish spouse – Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
Chase Carey – non-Jew/White – Deputy Chairman, President, and Chief Operating Officer
(Murdoch’s last COO and President was Peter Chernin, a Jew)

    Time Warner:
Jeffrey L Bewkes – has Jewish spouse – Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
Gary L Ginsberg – Jew – Executive Vice President, Corporate Marketing and Communications

    Viacom:
Sumner M Redstone – Jew – Executive Chairman of the Board and Founder
Philippe Dauman – Jew – President and Chief Executive Officer

    The Walt Disney Company:
Robert A Iger – Jew – Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
Alan Braverman – Jew – Senior Executive Vice President, General Counsel, and Secretary

well one good thing bout them all being jews….at the christmas parties there is always good chopped liver!

    • NHoll

I’ve heard that throughout the years, and yes it is indeed true, and odd – but I still don’t get the significance of a particular race owning media. Granted, it all comes down to the same problem of a narrow premeditated message, but I haven’t quite figured out why/if there is a significance of the “Jewish” subcategory.

Honest question, and I’m truly curious as to your or others thoughts. Nholldigital @ gmail . Com

Alas you won’t look further than that will you because it satisfies the anti semite in you! Not one of these so called Jews supports Israel, in fact they support it’s opposition, they bankroll the Arabs who in turn bankroll the terrorists on the ground! When you check into these peoples genealogies you’ll find not one of them is a real Jew but rather descendants of the Khazar people who “adopted” judaism to suit their evil purposes which are satanic purposes! Satan means to control God’s country and take God’s place and those people (the Khazars/ Bankers) are his slaves! This is a fight of Biblical proportions people and you’d better be informed and choose the right side because one side means anti God and eternal damnation! For you atheists out there soon you’ll not be able to deny the truth anymore as there will be no sitting on the fence! You’ll be either on one side lost or on the other saved!

    So who owns CNN?

    • Dreadthefed

      Time Warner

It’s actually not about the money, it’s bigger. The owners of these corporations are high level Freemasons which was started by the Jesuits. It’s about mind control for worship. If we are not choosing God, we are choosing self or Satan. Daniel and Revelation tell us how Satan is going to get control of minds and divert worship to him, wether by choice or default. God’s people will be persecuted for not following the crowd, but putting God and His laws as priority. Sabbath is saturday. There is a coming Sunday Law that is and will continue to be supported/pushed by mind control agencies that Satan has already in place. Don’t take my word for it, study study study. Walter Veith on YouTube shares so much from an honest compassionate heart with no hidden agenda.

It has already become obvious in this country. The vitriol with which people of faith are treated is because of this programming. It is just the beginning. Heck there are people in my own family with a seemingly deep hatred for anything relating to Christianity. They don’t even realize how much those thoughts are not even their own.

You are correct, and it is gonna be a bumpy ride from here.

  • Dieter

Great article! Watch Brother Nathanael on YouTube to see who really ownes these six media giants. You’ll be surprised.

    • disqus_Ri2AHq1B1b

      isn’t brother nathanael a trip?

  • John

There is an old adage that says “Don’t believe everything you hear and only half of what you see.” Very wise words.

  • blah

” these gigantic media corporations are always going to express the ideological viewpoints of their owners.”

  • blah

the jews run and own the media everyone knows that ,just ask helen thomas(baited by a rabbi with a hidden camera) or rick sanchez

  • Phyllis Costa

I could not agree with you more!!!.

For the last 2 years I have gone without TV, cable TV and even radio. Periodically, I read the news over the internet but always with skepticism and I also verify who is delivering the news.

  • Mermaiden

I tell every couple who are planning a wedding, DO NOT HAVE CHILDREN. They will simply be abused, or turned into slaves. The workforce of the future…….brought to you by the KOCH FAMILY, and the rest of the 1%. Void of conscience, and certainly not the least bit intrested in humanity, other than as workers. Of course, they will have totally ruined the enrivonment w/in 20 years, so their families will die off, too. OH, well……DO NOT PROCREATE.

    • Pappa Bear

Such a limited view of things. You really should climb out of the Box you have allowed the media to put you in. This is a perfect example of media programing. You sound just like CNN. If you think the Koch family is your biggest problem, you are being programmed.

Ditch it, cancel your cable, or dish. Hit them where it hurts, the bottom line, their not in control, you are, wake
up. Stop going to their propaganda films in the theaters,

When you control a country’s media, you control it’s democratic process by influencing what it’s citizens. Now, for kicks let’s see who owns/controls each of those media entity (NPR should be included, they are every bit as guilty….see who are the overseers).

We need to be truly free, that is what made America a great nation, freedom of speech, democracy, capitalism. We won’t continue as a great nation until we have that. Because how can you be truly free if everything you hear, see, read is controlled by a select few. No one grows spiritually, emotionally and physically on fear and lies and that includes our whole world. We need to give credit to the American people that if we did indeed someday have freedom of speech on what you hear, see and read, that we would always choose the right and greater good.

You can’t trust the internet either so you all have no where to turn,
Shut off your television, radio, computers and smart phones throw away your magazines and start thinking for yourselves that will be the only way to beat these corporations.

Reasons not to believe everything you see, hear, or read?

    and freedom for all…….

  • Vivian Ramage

I think it is wrong for news not to tell truth. I think all of y’all who own these ought to be ashamed. You are putting a fear in the people of this country because we don’t know anything. No, I don’t understand the way news is told. Show in Memphis, Tennessee 6 shootings in one day, but nothing about all the threats we see and hear on the Internet . Guess America is the land of lies, money and politics whatever it costs ! This American is ashamed , and pissed!

  • Pappa Bear

Telecommunications act of 1996. Touted to keep our children safe on the internet. Which they knew was not possible when they ceremoniously signed this into law, just lies. They will always invoke fear for the children to get something they want. Before this was passes I believe there were 150 or so corporations owning the media. This bill cleared the way for all of the consolidation which today has our media in the hands of 6 corporations only.

  • dan

Complete mind control. Don’t think for a second that everything you watch and hear isn’t orchestrated.

  • escapification

This list is quite outdated now.

  • teddyftl

So why did the FCC allow these mergers that created this monopoly? It just shows that they were paid off too! Our entire system has been corrupt for decades, right under our noses. We need to take back what’s ours. Enough of milking us dry, enough of the lies from both parties. We need independence and freedom back. The American people have done it before and we sure as hell can do it again.

Ad for Disney at the end of the article. I hope that when the big six become the big one that Disney is that one.

This time when the banks fail, depositors will find it very difficult, if not impossible to get their money in a timely manner, if at all. Since you are only getting .65 percent of interest (if that) on your savings, you are actually losing the value of your money letting it be used by these thieving, cheating bankster bastards. Take a quarter of your money out of the bank and buy silver and very small gold coins. Take another quarter out of the bank and start a pantry for an emergency food supply of the foods you normally eat. Use an other quarter of your money from the bank to purchase protective gear like ammo, rifles, shotguns, compound bow, and some fishing gear. Use some of your saving to purchase tradable commodities like coffee, sugar, etc. that will be hard to get when the Sh** hits the fan (SHTF). Take the rest of you savings ad keep it in a safe place at home to be used during the 1st phase of the collapse when most people’s access to their own money will be “rationed” by the owners of the banks that have their deposits. Close your bank account. Open an account at your local credit union for only your monthly expense payments. Get right with the LORD. PRAY for others and help others get ready for the financial collapse and lawlessness that will follow. God Bless.

Sorry for some of the typos.

That’s why I have not had a TV in 10 years, it’s all bs and too depressing!! Even the so call sitcoms are “programming” people. LOL,..Check out the Bilderberg Group. I choose to enjoy my little “local” world and am very grateful I don’t have children.

  • Me

Even more proof they are all in it together, working toward dumbing us down everyday. All these corporations don’t want us to know the truth. They want to spoonfeed us lies & nonsense.
