Flat Broke, Living In A Moldy Basement And Relying On Food Stamps And Medicaid

Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on Google+Share on LinkedInShare on StumbleUponEmail this to someone

Lock In The Rain - Public DomainCould you imagine being a single parent and trying to survive in America today on $10.50 an hour?  For a moment, I want you to imagine that you are living in a moldy apartment that is so badly maintained that rain seeps in whenever it rains.  You are employed, but you are completely dependent on government programs such as food stamps and Medicaid in order to make ends meet.  Sometimes you would really like to take your small child somewhere fun, like a movie theater, but you can’t really afford the gas money.  You are working as hard as you can, but you never seem to get anywhere, and you feel trapped because nobody seems to want to hire you for a better job.  What I have just described for you is real life for a 22-year-old single mother from Chicago named Adriana Alvarez, but there are tens of millions of other Americans that have similar stories.  If every day seems like it is a soul-crushing struggle for you, I want you to know that you are not alone.  The long-term economic collapse that I chronicle on my website is not just about facts and figures.  It is about real people that are quietly leading lives of silent desperation, and by now it has becoming exceedingly apparent that our politicians, the mainstream media and the gigantic corporations that dominate our economy do not really care much about the rest of us at all.

Life fundamentally changes once you become a parent.  Instead of living just for yourself, all of a sudden you have a precious little child that is completely and totally dependent on you.  And it is absolutely heartbreaking for any parent to look into the eyes of a little child and try to explain why there is not enough food or why they can’t afford a better place to live.

With that in mind, I want you to read an excerpt from Adriana’s recent blog post entitled “What It’s Really Like To Support Yourself On McDonald’s Pay“…

I’m a single mom with a three-year-old son named Manny. To support him, I work full-time as a cashier at a McDonald’s in Chicago.

I’ve worked at McDonald’s for five years, but still make only $10.50 an hour. The only way my son and I can make it is with food stamps, Medicaid, and a child care subsidy. Most of my coworkers are in the same boat, no matter how long they’ve held their jobs.

With child care, transportation to work, food, rent, and our other basic expenses, there’s no money left over for living. Every time I think about taking Manny somewhere fun, like to a movie, I have to think about whether we can really afford the gas.

When you only make $10.50 an hour and you have a child to take care of, you are obviously very limited as far as where you can live, and where Adriana lives sounds extremely depressing

We live in a basement apartment, because it’s all I can afford. When it rains, water seeps into the apartment. This wetness brings mold, and I can’t get rid of the smell. We can’t even leave anything on the floor, which is tough with a three-year-old. Toys or anything else on the floor may get ruined when the water comes in.

So what is the solution for Adriana?

Well, she is taking part in nationwide strikes to try to force McDonald’s to pay workers like her a livable wage.

Unfortunately, that simply is not going to happen.  McDonald’s restaurants are already experiencing a sales downturn, and if they raise wages substantially they will get crushed by the competition.

And of course those jobs were never meant for people that are trying to raise families.  When I was growing up, it was teenagers and senior citizens that worked at McDonald’s.  I know, because I was one of those teenagers.

But now millions upon millions of Americans in their prime working years are doing these kinds of jobs.  As good jobs have disappeared from our economy, the competition for the jobs that remain has become extremely intense.  It is really easy to tell Adriana that she should “get a better job”, but that can be extremely difficult in this economy, especially if you don’t have much education.

I know a lot of sharp, talented, responsible people that have been unemployed for a very long time or that are working at places like McDonald’s because nobody else will hire them.  I am amazed that there is not a place for their talents and abilities in the “greatest economy on Earth”.  But you know what?  Things are about to get a whole lot worse out there.

A few months ago, I wrote that the crashing price of oil was going to cause massive job losses in the energy industry, and now it is happening.

According to Yahoo, more than 100,000 layoffs have already been announced, and this could be just the tip of the iceberg…

Since crude prices began tumbling last year, energy companies have announced plans to lay off more than 100,000 workers around the world. At least 91,000 layoffs have already materialized, with the majority coming in oil-field-services and drilling companies, according to research by Graves & Co., a Houston consulting firm.

And remember, these are not $10.50 an hour jobs.  Many of these jobs pay well into the six figures annually.  These are exactly the kinds of jobs that the U.S. economy simply cannot afford to lose.

Meanwhile, Barack Obama is colluding with Congress to push through the next great job killing trade agreement.  The following was in the Wall Street Journal on Thursday…

Lawmakers introduced fast-track trade legislation into the House and Senate Thursday that could pave the way for President Barack Obama to conclude a major agreement with 11 nations around the Pacific.

This agreement is called “The Trans-Pacific Partnership”, and it would result in millions more good jobs being sent overseas.  For much more about this shocking betrayal of the American people, please see my previous article entitled “Obama’s Secret Treaty Would Be The Most Important Step Toward A One World Economic System“.

What our economy desperately needs is more jobs, not less jobs.

And traditionally, small businesses have been the primary engine of job growth in this country.

Unfortunately, our politicians have been absolutely killing small businesses for decades.  Just look at the chart below.  It comes from the U.S. Census Bureau, and it is extremely alarming.  Back in 1980, nearly half of all firms in America were considered to be “young”, and those young firms accounted for almost half of all job creation.  Since that time, there has been a slow, steady, depressing decline…

Share Of Firms That Are Young

And as I discussed the other day, more businesses have closed in the United States than have opened for each of the past six years.

Prior to 2008, that had never happened before in all of American history.

Thank you Barack Obama.

When I talk about our “long-term economic collapse”, I am not exaggerating.

Our economy is literally dying right in front of our eyes, and it is people like Adriana Alvarez that are paying the price.

We desperately need to go back and start doing the things that once made this country so great, but unfortunately we continue running in the other direction as fast as we can.

So in the end, things are going to get much, much worse.

Things did not have to turn out this way, but these are the choices that we have made, and now we get to live with them.

Sowing and Reaping…the results of a society that knows better than the word of God. Any morals are fine. Well, she contributed big time to the situation she is in. There is little restraining stigma to keep youth away from what used to guide them.

  • The Conservanator

    Here’s a thought.
If they can’t afford to feed themselves, why are these people
having babies? Working at McDonalds should not be a career
choice. Get educated, which should lead to a good paying job,
then procreate. If that process is not followed, then I’m not
interested in the poor me stories.

    • RageHard84

College is expensive though…and it hurts to have those loans. Not to mention the fact that even some college graduates are underemployed.
You could try trade school I guess. Not sure how high-paying or available those jobs are but I would think trade school’s less expensive than college.

      • trigonomomoalie

if you are broke, the first 2 years at cc are free. .

        • RageHard84

CC does save money, but you still need to spend additional money at the university to finish your bachelor’s.
It should be noted that you may not finish in 2 years, doing so will be even harder if you work part-time.

      • college is not the answer. A skill is the answer. Nurses aid, medical records, office assistant, and many other 18 month training is the answer. You want the government to get involved here it’s OK with me. Give people like this the opportunity to gain a skill, at the end, they get some help finding them a job. After that they’re on their own. For me, it’s always the hand up not the hand out.

        • RageHard84

          So you’re recommending trade school.

          • NM Rancher

I live in an area where skilled laborers are almost nonexistent. We need plumbers, electricians, carpenters. We can’t find any. Every one I know who has skills is fully employed and in demand despite the wretched economy. If you are willing to work you will make it. The people who aren’t willing to work will not make it. That is all.

          • Thank you for pointing that out, and yes, trade school is a great way to go; than and an apprenticeship. In the mid-late 70’s, I was a program coordinator at a Junior College with my program – Radiography. Turned out some great kids. All got jobs. Used to say that the point was getting a skill, and it was a skill they would have throughout their lives. Good kids and they became good techs.

          • RageHard84

Hmm… Can’t say everyone should be in a trade. Some folks do the academic track, others a trade. It depends on the person. Can’t say I support the everyone should be in college shtick like I used to though.

    • Catman

This mother is working, and that is very commendable. This is not one of the millions who have three children out of wedlock, draw a check for each one, get every subsidy imaginable, and sit on their butt talking on their cell all day long. We know so little about this particular mother, why judge her? To me the bigger point of the article is that we are giving our jobs away. This is going to lead to even greater welfare expenditures to keep the mobs from looting and rioting all over this country- and we’ll gladly pay the extra taxes for the stability this brings. The problem in a nutshell is the vast majority of Americans do not consider God in their personal, public, and professional lives, and what we have now is the result. It’s a pervasive and systemic problem in our culture, and we are reaping the consequences of our anti-God choices.

      • The Conservanator

The biggest point to be made is don’t have children until you can afford them. It doesn’t take much deep
thought to figures that one out.

      • Gay Veteran

OR we have a government that has sold us out and our economy is going down the toilet

        • Catman

Let’s split the difference and agree all the above is true.

    • Revolt to save America

what good jobs, a college degree gets you 10 an hour at star bucks, ! ! ! the middle class is squished, but yes the story of single mom young wasn’t a good example, they should have talked about middle age single mom 40 or the couple who lost jobs to over seas and now make little. COLLEGE is another article all together, BIG DEBT and no job waiting when you graduate. YOU MUST THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX TO MAKE IT IN THIS WORLD, survival of the fittest.

      • The Conservanator

Actually, what I said was education, not college.
A positive side effect of not going to college is
that you avoid the liberal indoctrination process.
You don’t need to think outside the box.
The trades would be a good place to start looking
for gainful employment. Not many plumbers, etc get shipped in from China or India.

    • jsmith

Unfortunately quite a number of those that have an education can’t find work either. Michael has already written about this, and points out that degrees don’t help much. Ask the graduates working at Starbucks!
By the way, $10.50 an hour is a lot of money in other countries like Latin America, where for example $600-700 a month is the income for most people. Why do you think a lot of Americans are retiring in Central America where one can live like a king on $1500.00 a month.

      • GSOB

        1500 a month… really?

        • jsmith

Yes, that’s correct. That would be for a single person. Obviously it would be more for a couple. But I even know of couples that are living frugally on $1500.00.

          • GSOB

That would allow my wife and I to retire and spend more time focused on Christ.

  • Tim

Michael, the workplace has changed greatly in just the last several years. Many who are employed are under a lot of stress because they’re expected to do the work of several people. I’m in this situation. I’m not opposed to hard work! I love working hard, but within reason. Furthermore, my hourly wage is NOT commensurate with what I do.

I had a conversation with a coworker today during our lunch break. She told me she is looking for another job because she can’t take it anymore. But I think she may have a hard time finding something else because of her age. She’s 60. I’m also looking to leave, but I will not leave until I find another job. It would be foolish to leave without having another job lined up. I’m much younger than my coworker.

  • T.

This sad story of Adriana is echoed across this once great land of America. It is really nothing more than the death rattle of a dying nation. Even in this small Southern town where I live – There are several Adrianas living on my street who are about 5 to 10 years younger than my children. Without assistance from their parents – They would be worse off than Adriana.
There is No commitment to the long haul for so many coming up these days – Our lying Politicians have sold us out by giving in to the big Corporations – Sending our good paying manufacturing jobs overseas. America has no future on her present course – But rather has one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel.

    • Revolt to save America

T, better well put than my words, yes,,,,, we are stuck with wage stagnation , WHY THE HECK we send our jobs over see’s,,,, we have PERMANANTELY LOST JOBS< this isn't not a recession, it is the new normal, Let me put it this way, we are in a new normal and in OCT we are going to have a recession. Our middle class is being killed. It's very sad times for our kids, I don't think I'd have kids today it's that gloom and doom. BUT since I do, it's trade school and Lord knows what the future hold,

      • NinjaLulzTurtle

No, this current state of affairs is one of borrowed prosperity compared to the normal that is coming.

Look at the “ukraine” for the future, a failed state that is headed toward starvation.

If you are reading this, you are the resistance! -D

      • patetico

You started sending your jobs to asia since the 80s and you can blame the goverment or greedy immoral coorporation but in the end is the american consumer who dictates who stays and who goes. And most american decided that cheap crap from china was more valuable than a healthy manufacturing job infrastructure. and people till this day continue to buy chinese crap now more than ever because is not economicaly viable to manufacture locally because than things will cost alot more.

      • Carolyn Burton

people who graduate trade school, or get certifications for certain things are actually better off than those from college.
There was a young black boy living in a similar situation – today he is known as the greatest neurosurgeon in the world. There were siamese twins that were connected at the head, and part of their brains too. He successfully did something that had never been done before – Dr Ben Carson. Think of the help and inspiration he and other people like him could be?
According to Porter Stansberry, we are up against a currency crash. This with the stores closing is another step in that direction

    • DJohn1

As someone once said, That vacuum sound you hear is our jobs under Bill Clinton going south. What makes anyone think that either party wants to change that?
They are all in the back pocket of corporations that profit from low wages everywhere.
There is now legislation on the President Pick Pocket’s desk to do it again, only worse.

      • none

It might also explain why ISIS has secret bases right below the Texas border!
They could not believe that president Obama could destroy the U.S. so efficiently.
This also explains why President Obama has not announced secret drone strikes against the secret bases.

      • CharlesH

Ross Perot and he was ridiculed for making that statement. The man was a genius.

    • laura m.

T: agree, but If these women would put the children to be adopted in a decent home (to be fair to the kids) this would be the best thing they could do for their future. Folks, if you can’t feed ’em don’t breed ’em. Family planning services are free in every community, women: medicaid can tie your tubes, then can shack up any ‘ol time.. Most of these women were ditched by boyfriends who should be paying child support. Breeding in this day and age is an expensive hobby, meant only for the wealthy classes. when I was growing up, there were larger families and women stayed home. Few women had to enter the workforce (widows from ww2 , Korea and Viet N. other reasons like divorce) also single women. Women didn’t breed unless they were married. Voting is for suckers, politicians years back, have given away our jobs, and get paid for doing nothing constructive. (greedy scum bags in both party’s all they care about is grant money).

      • Janine G

        Totally agree!

      • NinjaLulzTurtle

What is needed for the children is not adoption but youth organizations, teams of individuals dedicated to taking properly care of them.

So if it is so expensive, exactly how did average Appalachians pull off having many children in 1912? I don´t advocate “traditional gender roles” or travelling to the moon, just be serious and differentiate between actual needs and wants.
Consumerist lifestyle is what raisied the cost of having children, when we had prosperity, we grew picky and spoiled, cared too much about material possessions to have children.

Too often the child does not see one nickel of the child support when it is paid, it goes into nifty handbags and so on, there isn´t much pressure to stop such from happening.

    • old fart

on the other hand our Government is allowing uncounted Millions of Illegals to flood the Nation along with issuing them the SS cards and drivers licences and total access to out safety nets that are in place for legal residences. our politicians are all on the take from large industries AND DO NOT REPRESENT THE PEOPLE WHO ELECTED THEM. So we are reaping the fruit of ignorance by reelecting them.

    • LulzNinjaTurtle

What is needed for the children is not adoption but youth organizations, teams of individuals dedicated to taking properly care of them.

  • Jack Frost

Poorly made choices early in life can reduce your success lifelong. Becoming a single parent is NEVER a viable life option unless you are already independently wealthy!

    • Rocketman

You will never see what you said discussed openly. Why is that certain populations in our society are predisposed to this lifestyle?

      • Genada

No part of our society is predisposed to it. Every race group in this country use to have high rates of marriage and waited to have children till they were married. The entire culture changed and all of society changed. It’s only appears to be more in other social groups due to the fact it’s focused more in those groups to give people the idea it’s a problem with that group and not with the culture at large. Our entire culture and society has a problem, not one social group.

        • Jodie Lynn Gaeta

Statistically though, it’s blacks, and after that Hispanics, who have the highest number of single-parent households. What’s the problem? As one African-American friend told me, “A lot of black men are no good”. Unfortunately, it’s the mothers who get stuck raising the kid alone while working long hours for little pay. I feel kind of sorry for them, because it’s not fair. But the answer is not more freebies from the government. I know this is harsh, but I think that the best thing the government can do would be to announce a cessation of all government assistance to poor children. This will never happen, of course, but if young girls knew that their baby might literally starve to death, I bet they wouldbe a lot choosier about the kind of men they take on as sexual partners.

          • Horiboyable .

Very true. Here in the Uk it is out of control. Some families on benefits have children with three or more different fathers. More benefits, more demand. One women when asked why didn’t she work and help support her children, she replied; do you expect me to work at McDonalds or something. These types are choosing this as a life style choice. You know who is going to rob you in 15 years time.

          • alan

The mother then need to take responsibility to say bugger off.

          • guest

You must not have gotten the memo.
Per feminism, men have responsibilities, to pay for everything and apologize for being men. women have rights and special privileges.

          • guest

Wouldn’t that remove a few doctrines of your religion ?

    • Yeah. Blame the victim. That’s what we do in third world countries too.

ohhh the never ending cliche..keep them coming

      • Jodie Lynn Gaeta

If the father didn’t want anything to do with the kid, she should have given her baby up for adoption. Better yet, she shouldn’t have been consorting with some no-account guy. Sure, she’s young, but she’s not exactly a victim. Neither is her kid. He’s got food, shelter, and medical care- courtesy of the taxpayer.

        • guest

Yes, your religion needs more children sacrificed to baal.
          60 million isn’t nearly enough.

      • alan

So if we are the victim then what? We still have to eat and pay bills, you must have the drive and think outside the box to get your self ahead. No one should starve to death in America, maybe get killed by the police but not starve.

        • laura m.

If women want to whore around there are drugs (legal) to cause a miscarriage. Better yet, get the tubes tied under medicaid before slumming around. Taxpayers have to support these stupid women who spread their legs every chance they get and pop out babies.

        • Jill

Since it has already been established that this young woman depends on the government for her basic needs, do you not find it plausible that such a person would not avail themselves of food stamps ow WIC?

      • NM Rancher

No one owes you or her anything. Get Real.

        • True..I’m waiting for..What goes around, comes around cliche as well

or my favorite ….Everything happens for a reason…

      • uest

What exactly is she a victim of ? Spreading her legs ?
The only one I feel pity for is the poor child.

  • Revolt to save America

it can be a 30 or 40 year old divorced just as well, who had a marriage once and a great job, They don’t need to say a young mom, then we can tear about having children young and unmarried, lets think this is a person who had a good middle class job and divorced and this is where they are stuck, NOW THAT is probably familiar to that group, this isnt’ just a young issue, besides irresponsible young choices, no school or trade school is just from a bad choice. well I hope you all know what I mean,,, you have married couples in this situation due to low pay and rising rents. no one can live on 10 an hour with the new full time job being 32 hours a week.

    • NM Rancher

Yes, it can very easily be someone who has had a good job and then lost it but there is still the basic truth. Relying on government handouts which are derived from everyone else’s money is wrong. Life is hard. No one owes you any thing. THe sooner you grasp that concept the sooner you will get off the couch and go do something to change it. It’s horrible but that is what has happened because we let them destroy our country. Voting for the bastards who allowed this to happen (or not voting at all) let them take control None of us should have allowed them to offshore our jobs but we all stood by and let it happen. Now we are reaping the consequences of apathy and lack of patriotism. My life is the hardest it has ever been but all I can do is work harder until I can make it. That means life has become grim, and dark but I am reaping what I have sown. We all need to participate in restoring the US Constitution and our country. Instead we are being pushed out of the country we created.

“If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of
their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and
corporations that will grow up around them will deprive the people of
all property until their children wake up homeless on the continent
their Fathers conquered.” — Thomas Jefferson

  • HR

As a building Inspector I see things like this around town more than I care to say. We call the property owners “slum lords,” but often that is all the tenant can afford. We know her situation only in part. We don’t know if she is young, divorced or whatever so some need to reserve judgement. Hey even bad things happen to good people. Anyway. I have been blessed with a good job, but in an effort to pick up a bit of part-time work to close out some bills I have found myself against a brick wall. I have applied specifically for part time jobs at Tractor Supply, Lowe’s, Autozone to no avail. I guess I am over qualified. I would have thought they would be interested in a person wanting part time work so they would not have to supply health insurance. That hasn’t panned out either. Thanks Michael for another great article.

  • Nowaynow

Ha, protesting, how retarded. People are weird! How humiliating going out into the street begging and threatening. People should have some pride.

This government stinks, but you know what…a lot of people make really stupid mistakes, and then expect a handout. Is that fair? Where were her parents to set her straight?

I grew up rough and most of the poor people I grew up with were bums, not all, but way too many, and most of their decisions stunk. I don’t care what you say, I have seen it up close.

Where is this young lady’s husband, the father of the child? Was she force to get pregnant, or did she mess up, spread her legs for some jerk and now she is a collective problem?

We all should have heart, but people need to behave and have personal responsibility. This altruism nonsense is a zero sum game. No one wins.

Not everything is the governments fault. This government is the citizens fault. You all voted for the politicians. Personally I don’t hate them, they are predators, snake oil salesmen, and you fools don’t see it or care.

    • Jodie Lynn Gaeta

You are absolutely right. A little crudely phrased, but true all the same. Demanding a higher wage from McDonald’s? She’s already making $10.50 per hour and unless you’re the general manager that’s pretty good for a fast food job. Where is the father of this kid? It’s his job to help provide for that little one, not McDonald’s. ( It shouldn’t be the taxpayers” burden either.) Adriana should be very grateful that society provides a safety net for her and her child because otherwise that kid would be going to bed hungry every night. Never mind not being able to take him to the movies; that’s a luxury a lot of people can’t afford these days.

      • Its not even a good wage for a third world country. I’m from a third world country and compared to the cost of living here, people working in fast food joints are doing fine….not great but not horrible like in US

        • Jodie Lynn Gaeta

If Adriana were childless, she would be doing fine on her current wage. She could have gotten a couple of roomies and lived in a fairly nice apartment while having a little money for entertainment and finishing college. But she had a baby at age 19 and then it hit her: wow, this is hard! Besides, cracking down on illegal aliens would go a long way in increasing wages in low- skilled jobs by removing unfair competition.

      • NM Rancher

Did you notice she has a car? She said she didn’t have the gas money to go to the movies. Where else in the world do the poor have their own cars? Only in America. I agree with many others here that poor decisions have consequences. I am being crushed by paying taxes to the Federal Govt. to the tune of $3k a month (I was a tax protester but they finally beat me.) so in order to keep working in the US I have to surrender all my money to them. Where does the money go? To pay people like her to have kids and we have to support them. I am sorry but no one ever supported me. I have worked hard all my life and now they are taking everything from me. I am white, over 56 years old and used to make a great living but now I am a slave. People like her are plundering our money all because they claim victimhood. Life isn’t easy why do I have to pay for people like her. No one ever gave me a thing in life, I earned everything have. Who will help me? I am almost 60 now I work 50-60 hours a week and I can barely afford to live on what little they have left me. I pray every day that the Restoration starts because then I won’t have to pay the Beast and I will be able to fight for my freedom. God Bless what is left of the true America. We need to make a stand.

        • Jodie Lynn Gaeta

I have far more scorn for whoever fathered that kid and refuses to help him; at least the mom is working and doing her best. But her attitude of false entitlement bothers me. And you are right: she has a car (and a computer.) She’s not so deprived as she thinks.

“I have far more scorn for whoever fathered that kid and refuses to help him”
Of course you do, because you are a man hating feminazi.
“at least the mom is working and doing her best”
Yeah, justify her spreading her legs for whatever thug happened by. After all, she is just another poor, poor, pitiful victim…. and yet so ’empowered’ and ‘independent’.
“But her attitude of false entitlement bothers me”
She is no different from most American girls. This is the end result of your religion of man hate and perpetual victim hood, ( the fish don’t need no bike and fathers are unnecessary).
This is what your coven preached to these girls for 40 years. You should celebrate the realization of your dreams !

No, she was a tax “protester”…she found loopholes to legally avoid paying taxes for many years, but eventually they closed those loopholes causing her to owe years of back taxes…so they take everything she makes and only leaves her barely enough to survive..until it’s all paid off, and according to her last statement, that won’t be for a very long time.

      BUILDING NOAH’s ARK TODAY

And the Lord spoke to Noah and said, “In one year, I am going to make it rain and cover the whole earth with water until all flesh is destroyed. I want you to save the
righteous people and two of every kind of living thing on the earth. Therefore I am commanding you to build an Ark.”

In a flash of lightening, God delivered the specifications for the Ark. In fear and trembling, Noah took the plans and agreed to build the Ark. “Remember” said the Lord, “You must complete the Ark and bring everything aboard in one year.”

Exactly one year later, fierce storm clouds covered the earth and all the seas of the earth went into a tumult. The Lord saw Noah was sitting in his front yard weeping. “Noah,” he shouted, “Where is the Ark?”

Lord, please forgive me!,” cried Noah. “I did my best, but there were big problems.

First, I had to get a permit for construction and your plans did not comply with the codes. I had to hire an engineering firm and redraw the plans. Then I got into a fight with OSHA over whether or not the Ark needed a fire sprinkler system and flotation devices. Then my neighbor objected, claiming I was violating zoning ordinances by building the Ark in my front yard, so I had to
get a variance from the city planning commission.”

“I had problems getting enough wood for the Ark, because there was a ban on cutting trees to protect the Spotted Owl. I finally convinced the US Forest Service
that I needed the wood to save the owls. However, the Fish and Wildlife Services won’t let me catch any owls, so no owls.”

“When I started rounding up the other animals, I got sued by an animal rights group. They objected to me only taking two of each kind aboard. Just when I got the
suit dismissed, the EPA notified me that I could not complete the Ark without filing an environmental impact statement on your proposed flood. They didn’t
take very kindly to the idea that they had no jurisdiction over the conduct of the Creator of the universe.”

“Then the Army Corp of Engineers demanded a map of the proposed new flood plain. I sent them a globe.”

“Right now I am trying to resolve a complaint filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission that I am practicing discrimination by not taking godless, unbelieving people aboard. The IRS has seized my assets, claiming that I’m building the Ark in preparation to flee the country to avoid paying taxes. I
just got a notice from the state that I owe them some kind of user tax and failed to register the Ark as a “recreational water craft.”

“Finally, the ACLU got the courts to issue an injunction against further construction of the Ark, saying that since God is flooding the earth, it is a religious event and
therefore unconstitutional. I really don’t think I can finish the Ark for another 5 or 6 years!” Noah wailed.

The sky began to clear, the sun began to shine and the seas began to calm. A rainbow arched across the sky. Noah looked up hopefully. “You mean you are not going to destroy the earth, Lord?”

“No,” said the Lord sadly. “I don’t have to. The
      government already has.”

“How long can you tread water? Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha”
        -Bill Cosby

    • I’m from a third world country. Its so easy to blame humanity for the misery we did not create. No one wants to live in a sh**t.

I thought guys from first wold countries would have some sense and not take easy way out on blaming the victim like…

      The Cliche’s …

      1. Its your fault.

      2. You deserve it

      3. Work Hard

      4. Its gods will

      5. Karma..

      6. Karma is a b**tch

      7. You always have a choice

      8. I did not end up like that even though I came from the same place

      and so on…

When are we going to wake up to the manipulation.

Things just don’t work no matter what you do. I know I’m from a poor country. Stop blaming poor people and start fighting for your rights. They would never see us ALL Happy.

It works in their favor when some are happy and many are unhappy. We need to work as one collective force to free us all for ever from the darkness.

      • afchief

What are your rights? To steal from others labor in the form of welfare and food stamps? Life is NOT fair. Never will be. Millions of people in this country have made it through hard work and determination. Stop with your excuses and get off your butt and work.

2 Thessalonians 3:10 if anyone is not WILLING to work, then he is not to eat, either.

        • tinus42

But what if anyone is UNABLE to work because their work has been automated away and they can’t afford to retrain. Does the Bible discuss robots and computers?

          • Nemnor

A meaningful answer to your question is – the world must have a fundamental change away from Capitalism (which is ultimately NOT sustainable) to a sustainable alternative system that must address the ABUNDANT and “rational” needs of the individual (i.e. a new system that NOT setup to benefit mainly “the 1%”) .

        • John Byde

this woman sounds as though she is working hard.

It is the manipulation by the evil that is making things scarce…She is forced into this situation …All for just one mistake…How cruel and stingy is that…

Are we that incapble, for not even supporting one mistake a fellow human being make…common…I think we are much bigger than that

I do not believe human beings are that bad. We have unlimited love and care to support for 100 mistakes…

It is the manipulation that is making things scare…

      • folgers22

Bull. Lots of bad stuff can happen to you, but unless Adriana was raped (and right or wrong, there is a way to end an unwanted pregnancy), she had every opportunity not to have kids. Kids don’t just happen to you. I got my own and I planned ahead to have them. From the start of my relationship with my spouse, we talked about it and planned ahead to ensure we could survive with kids. The results have been very good. BTW-it isn’t like the proof isn’t out there to show that 2 parent households generally do a much better job supporting and raising kids.

No one has the right to demand I support them for their bad decisions. To put it another way, pi$$ poor planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine.

uh, if so many American jobs hadn’t been shipped to China maybe Ariana would have a better job

          • Jack Frost

So her fast food experience/education level/life choices have prepared her to work as a designer for Boeing or perhaps research into the latest fatal disease is more her strongsuit. Perhaps the fact she believes seniority entitles her to more money surely qualifies her to serve as a public sector union president or VP. Maybe she can continue politically supporting the party of dependence while using a student loan to major in studying the pandemic effects of transgenderism in the workplace and it’s effect on the other 50+ defined gender options today! After graduation she will still be working in fast food because of continuing poor choices. Clinton may have sent legions of good jobs packing overseas, but it took Obama to permanently destroy the number of hours in full time work to below 29 for employers to avoid funding his “gimme dat” healthcare scheme. And all of this economic disease has happened BEFORE the implementation of the employer mandate for the largest employers. Ariana may not have a decent job, and probably she never will, but eventually she will have lots and lots of company in her misery!

          • Gay Veteran

before “free trade” she could have worked in a factory making stuff. You know like shirts, shoes, etc.

Maybe Ariana should have gone to the free community college or a tech school to learn a trade to EARN more money, not expect it because Mickey D’s doesn’t and SHOULDN’T pay that kind of wage for a kids job. Your pay is based on your skills…you want more money? get some skills or get a second job.

You guys look everywhere except in the mirror to blame for your own mistakes. Adoption is free…you don’t even have to kill the kid to prevent yourself from sucking Social Securities money dry…That money is money that working people put into for the day they can not work any longer or the day they become disabled…it is not meant to support irresponsible people!!

            “…Adoption if free….”

yeah, not like there’s no kids waiting years for someone to adopt them

          • Jill

Have you been to a trade school or community college? First they are not free and secondly there are no guarantees that once completed that you will get any kind of a better paying job.

In fact you maybe worse off because you now have another financial burden in the way of educational costs.

          • LOL

Can you imagine how evil and inferior women are for not wanting to be the pets of bitter, misogynistic “Nice Guys”?

That even the single mothers who have to take care of a child don´t want them, don´t see them as husband material just prooves that women are all irrational and ruled by their emotions.

          • Jill

I doubt it. Her judgement appears to be quite poor.

        • quercus454

Situations change. And sometimes those changes are beyond our control. What if after your first child, your wife and you got a divorce or perhaps you lost your job? It is easy to say what others should or should have done until you have walked in their shoes.
While certainly there are a lot of irresponsible people in this country, the plight of the poor is not a black and white issue. Just because someone is poor doesn’t mean they are freeloading or are not hardworking. There are millions of Americans who had good paying jobs, got married, had a family and then found their financial future destroyed by outsourcing, insourcing and the globalist ideology.

The potter has authority over the clay as to what kind a vessel is made.

All vessels go through the fire.

Has not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel to honor, and another to dishonor?

That’s why they’re importing illegals & signing them up for the gov’t programs. They are grateful & don’t complain. YES, I’m being facetious. To me it is criminal that women like this, hardworking & trying to impress good values upon her child are not able to find work. It’s not a fault of McDs. That’s like saying the ticket taker at the movie theater should get $20K a year. Some jobs are meant as starter jobs. If you have nothing else and they choose to hire you, you need to accept the wage that goes with the level of experience required to do the job. It IS the fault of the corrupt political leaders, excessive restraints put on businesses and oppressive unions.
Truly sad. This will not only affect this young woman, but will impress upon her child the futility of wanting to earn a living wage and being unable to work your way into a position that allows for that.

        • Nemnor

GSOB, “…corrupt political leaders, excessive restraints put on businesses and oppressive unions…” may indeed aggravate the socioeconomic issues facing the USA.

However, the MAIN reason for the socioeconomic issues facing the USA and virtually everywhere in the world is – the world-wide capitalist system itself – which is now decadent and decaying and can NOT permanently recover (from an on-going crisis) by economic means alone.

The solution is (obviously) a fundamental change away from Capitalism to a sustainable system that truly addresses the ABUNDANT and “rational” needs of the individual (and leaving NO “rational” person behind – i.e. NOT a system setup to benefit “the 1%’ at the expense of the many).

The solution is NOT (as some would have us believe) “a good politician in the WH”, or a return to “a better/reformed Capitalism”, or a return to the “good old days” when Capitalism SEEMED to be working for the US middle-class, or sending home all “illegals”, etc. This would be like wetting a tree that is already DEAD and decaying/rotting and expecting that tree to somehow revive.

I’ve read many suggestions from learned economists. I don’t think those in power consider any suggestions. Some bloggers think socialism is the answer or communism. If I was magic, I’d roll the whole damn thing back thirty years. Problem is, we would still end up right where we are because of a foolish electorate and terrible, self serving leadership. • faithandhonor

Infrastructure is crumbling because the money ALREADY APPROPRIATED has been spent on things not specified as legitimate. It has been diverted into slush funds for political gain, like Social Security, the federal gas tax, ad nauseum. then the politicos come back and demand more money.

Why should I give more money to a heroin addict, or a spendthrift ne’er-do-well? If he can’t mange what he has, should I give him more? NO.

      • True Grit

In truth, we spend a lot more on those things than Guns and Ammunition. A country needs a defense for itself. We need to be ready when Your country tries to take us over as in British imperialism, Roman imperialism, Ottoman imperialism, Germany’s WWII ruthless expansionism, and yes, Jewish colonization and take over of Palestine.
        we’ll be ready!
        BTW: Try to be relevant.

        • Gay Veteran

we can defend ourselves with a small portion of what we give the Pentagon.

          I agree with Gerald Celente:
          bring our troops home
          seal the borders
          rebuild America
          NO foreign entanglements

          • True Grit

            Can’t argue with that!

        • Priszilla

So, Roman invasion is still relevant to you?

How come that the only country with worldwide fleets is the US. Not even “super evil” North Korea has a fleet of aircraft carriers in every ocean and military bases at the other end of the world.

China derives 70% of its GDP from infrastructure investment, and 30% from consumption, while the ratio in the US is more like 30% from infrastructure investment and 70% from consumption.

If you consume your wealth, you get poor, but if you invest in your property you become wealthier.

          • True Grit

“If you consume your wealth, you get poor, but if you invest in your property you become wealthier”.
Correct! We should make other countries defend themselves and lessen our defense spending to a reasonable level.
We have 5 times the infrastructure of China. But it is getting old and in disrepair and should be maintained and in some cases rebuilt.
World dominance costs money and our Government is hell bent on it. There’s nothing we can do except yap about it on a blog. Can any one tell me what “Super Evil” thing North Korea has done or are they “Super Evil” because that’s what the propagandists want us to think?

      • Jill

National defense is a specific enumerated mandate if our national charter. Though we provide a plethora of social services already, all of the ones you listed in fact, they are not specifically mandated. I hope this helps.

        • Priszilla

So, what state of the US lies in the Indian Ocean that mandates the Indian Ocean fleet of aircraft carrier?

What state of the US requires aircraft carriers passing through Hong Kong?

Why would the US need to lease the island of Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean from the UK to put a military base there?

The Russians pulled out of Germany, the Americans stayed, thr NSA even has a base there.

    • Gay Veteran

“…Things were better when God played a roll on the national stage….”

While it may seem unbelievable, what we are winessing today was prophesied by Jesus’ brother, James, about 45 AD. He said “Come now, you rich, weep and howl for yor miseries which are coming upon you.” He continues talking about their judgment and then issues their indictment: “Behold, the pay of the laborers who mowed your fields, and which has been withheld by you, cries out against you; and the outcry of those who did the harvesting has reached the ears of the Lord of the Sabbaoth (LORD of hosts).” You have lived luxuriously on the eart, and lead a life of wanton pleasure; you have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter.” James 5:1-8) The rich steal from the people who work for them and this includes using an intermediary, corporations. The opening of the sixth seal in Revelation also speaks of their overthrow. (Rev 6:12-17)
David tells us that the Torah is a parable (Ps 78:1-8) meaning that besides its Truth, it has prophetic applications. Joseph is a prophetic character for our day. The famine in Egypt led to all the people of the land becoming slaves of Pharaoh so they could eat and stay alive. This is what is again occurring today, is it not? Look at Greece. It is coming to America.
TPTB are enslaving the nations through debt. Unfortunately, things will get worse before getting better because God’s people haven’t come to the point of being willing to accept His righteous leaderhip, HIs Instuctions for Righteous Living, rather than having wicked men rule over us [because we secretly hope to be rich also] just as Jesus warned us: “If one comes in his own name, him you will accept. But you shall not see Me again until you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD.'”
God’s people, those who are left, will eventually understand this because Jeremiah tells us they will: “In the last days you will fully understand this [the prophesies he spoke about how God’s people refuse to LISTEN and our discipline]!” It is what we have always done since the Garden!

Unions have killed more jobs then they have created. I have seen many small companies driven out of business because of unionization efforts. The bottom rungs of our economic system have been eliminated due to the minimum wage and state welfare programs. Give a man a fish he will eat for one day, but teach him to fish then he will be able to feed himself and maybe sell the surplus.
Adriana has no skills. Can she paint, sew, clean, or cook? In a real economy the small starter jobs would be plentiful. The US has eliminated all these jobs.

If so, I have no sympathy for their predicament. I have even less sympathy if they believe that a vote for Hillary Clinton or an establishment Republican is the answer.

Of course she voted for Obama. Do you really have to ask?

  • Jodie Lynn Gaeta

I have almost no sympathy for this young woman. She had a kid at age 19 when she wasn’t ready to support a dependent and now it’s everyone else’s responsibility-McDonald’s and the government’s. She complains that McDonald’s pays so little that its workers are forced to rely on government assistance: so if she gets the $15 an hour that she thinks she deserves, will she gladly give up the food stamps, the Medicaid, and the child care subsidy? Of course not; she wants it all. The father of her baby left her in a fix ( I assume he’s not dead or disabled because she would have mentioned it to gain sympathy) and now we all have to pay for that: with our taxes and higher prices that will inevitably accompany a significant increase in minimum wage.

    • Genada

The question is tho, has the government played a hand in this as well.

If she wasn’t forced to compete with illegal immigrants how much would she be payed? I bet it would be more then her current pay.

Would she have made different choices had she know she could not depend on the government for support? I bet she would have as well.

I do believe people should be held to account for their own poor choices but as a society we also need to account for our actions that have lead to where we are at. The reason people do much of what they do now has much to do with learned behavior which they have been taught to believe is fine.

      • Jodie Lynn Gaeta

The answer is not more government benefits and a big increase in the minimum wage. Many McDonalds are franchises, anyway. Their profit margins may not be nearly as big as McDonalds Corporation’s is. The federal government should enforce the immigration laws, of course. That would tighten the labor market and force employers to pay more in order to attract employees. But the worst thing that society can do right now, in my opinion, is to feed this entitlement mentality that says “Oh sure, I can have a kid at age 19 with an unreliable male and we should be able to live in a nice apartment and afford to go to the movies.” Maybe she can order a dehumidifier through Fingerhut; that might help cut down on the mold. Her kid is well-nourished and has access to medical care. She should be grateful for that. But somehow she believes she should get a raise-an almost 50% raise- from her employer too.

        • She needs to have a couple more kids, hurt her back, and go on disability.

        • Genada

Her story is of a fellow human that needs help. She shouldn’t be able to live off the government forever but at the same time she should be given access to some kind of aid that will help improve her life so she does not need to be dependent her entire life.

My point about McDonald’s is that a lot of companies are living off of the government and there’s far less anger directed towards them. A few examples of things that really should outrage people:

          1. The fines being payed by major companies are tax write offs.

          2. Many of our largest companies are using a policy of paying low and steering people towards welfare programs.

          3. Most companies at this point are taking part in buy back programs of their own stock and not reinvesting in their own companies.

People themselves need to be held to account for the actions they take and they need to be able to take care of themselves but that also should go for our companies as well. The failure of this recovery has a lot to do with the fact that low rates, qe and every other policy taken has been directed to those at the top and the people in the lower levels of our society have been excluded from sharing in this recovery.

          • Jodie Lynn Gaeta

I agree with you on your 3 points listed 1,2 and 3. But I strongly disagree that this woman needs help. She’s already getting help, and plenty of it. So her apartment isn’t the greatest and she can’t take her son to the cinema. Their basic needs are being met. Yes, you are right that the lower levels of society have been excluded from the recovery. But Adriana is poor because she is a single mom with no college education or skills. Whose fault is that? McDonald’s restaurants, as I have mentioned, are mostly franchises. The owners are not usually filthy rich. I do not feel sorry for Adriana. Life for her is tough, but not horrible. And she made her own bed.

    • Its not about her…We need to get the big picture..

      • folgers22

“What our economy desperately needs is more jobs, not less jobs.”

What’s usurping the stimulus for job creation so that a free market economy can grow strong is simply the enormous, oppressive layers of government, its over reach and intrusion, transforming the culture to depend on the ‘nanny’ state.

Like a snake eating it’s own tail. Caught in a loop to its own demise.

  • Genada

Where is the father in this? We are suffering a huge problem with their being families lacking fathers in them. It’s not popular to say but the truth is people should be waiting to have children till they are married.

People like the woman in this story should be getting help but it also needs to be limited and it needs to be help to push her to no longer be dependent. Our social policy leads people to depend on the government forever.

The company it’s self should be billed out for this women’s cost, them being able to hire her at a wage that one can not sustain themselves on is going to be bared by someone and right now it’s the taxpayer. The cost to raise the wages of low payed workers is not nearly as much as most people believe, it would take as little as a dollar per meal to increase wages to 15 per hour. McDonald’s profit margin is about 16 percent right now so they could afford to raise wages without losing money.

End free trade, reform immigration policy to fix these problems. The United States should return to a Hamilton type economic policy that is designed to protect domestic industry and encourage domestic growth. Our government takes actions as it is now that hurt our lower classes and encourages economic treason. We the people need to start calling a spade a spade and demand that economic treason be called so and punished as it is, treason.

    • T.

At the stage our nation is today? Get Real – None of those needed changes you are calling for have a snowballs chance in hades of happening. Look at the laws being violated on a daily basis by our Government – And you think they will stop violating our laws and actually make good laws – Then enforce them?
How many Banksters have paid restitution and gone to prison for their crimes in 2008? None. the comments you make on the changes that need to be made are CORRECT – But our nation is run by Criminals. You need to realize that.

      • Genada

Listen I agree with you on that but we the people have a choice to play along in this or not. We do not have to accept it as fact and go along with it. We can choose to change it if we wish to do so.

If people elected not to go to a place that was forcing us to pay for it’s employees we could force them to change.

We can choose what to buy, you can buy American products if you want.

I went to jury duty recently and told the judge I refuse to sit in on this process due to the fact that the person in question no matter the crime they were accused of was rather minor when compared to the crimes that would never be prosecuted. I told him I refuse to be a cog in the system when the system is so corrupt. I was sent home of course but think about how if we were all to begin to just refuse being cogs in the corrupt system how quickly we could bring it to it’s knees.

People think they are powerless but they are not and resistance starts with a simple no.

        • T.

I agree that “WE” could Change things in this nation relative to the things you mention – If the American people were not “Sound Asleep”. Americans do not even want to talk about these issues you raise – Much less band together in great numbers and actually Do Something.
Not only is the political system Corrupt – But sadly, the people are apathetic – They just do not care.
The Apathy of the people is the greatest obstacle. Look, if people do not want to put out the effort to train their children up to be responsible adults (the vast majority do not) – Then they surely will not get up off the couch and Do the things we’re talking about here.

Why do some people believe that they have a fight to have children. Why would anyone even think of bringing a child into this world if the best job you can get is at McDonald’s I would never even think of bringing children into this world if I didn’t own my own home. Where is the father? When you decide to bring a child into this world you have to look at it as at least a twenty year plan. When I began to have children my house was already paid off and if I had to to I could survive on McDonald pay, that’s the whole point. I provide a secure safe long term environment for my children to develop. Children love the familiar and routine. I don’t understand people today. How we have allowed women to breed for the benefits, having many children with many different fathers. Kids that don’t know who their father is!! The United Kingdom will collapse with these type of breeders, their children normally end up under achievers, in crime and on benefits themselves. Quality breeders have less children and breed less often. Those breeders on benefits breed more children and their children normally get knocked up by the time they are 15 16 and the cycle starts all over again.

  • Terra And-Bailey Barton

It is sad how many still skate around the truth. The man running our country has been put in office purposely to bring down America. It is part of the plan for a one world government. The old, yet stable America many of us grew up with, is now a thing of the past. and to even entertain the fact that it would all be alright if they hadn’t farmed jobs overseas is a gross understatement. If you think its bad now, wait til September when he brings in close to 200 thousand illegals from Syria, and a 100 thousand more from South America. This has been planned very carefully for years. It is just now coming to fruition. What’s the answer? There is only one. And those who scoff will soon realize I am right. The fact of America’s problem, (and the world for that matter) is kicking Jesus out. Many will find out the hard way in September. God has had his fill of filth and sin and will bring his wrath on a sinful nation. No one alive today, has truly seen the wrath of God almighty. That’s my take. Take it or leave it. But I promise you, these words will ring in your mind LOUD and CLEAR when it all comes crashing down.

    Excess People.

Sounds ghoulish, but we have too many people. If the govt didn’t underwrite bad decisions with freebies, there would be much fewer low/no skill people out there in need. When you consider the govt has warped the economy and picked winners and losers for nigh on 100 years, it’s no wonder so many things are screwed up, including our population. Let’s not even start on the decay of our culture, which might have prevented girls, like Adriana, from ending up in this situation.

With the current economic collapse and the lack of jobs and you have to wonder why so many morons support bringing in illegals and legalizing the current hoard of illegals already here.

Also-I don’t know Adriana’s story, but why is she a single mother? Why did she have a kid as a single mother? Did she plan for the future or think about the predictable results of her actions ahead of time? When it came to kids, I purposefully waited so I could afford to raise them. My spouse and I do well and we feel the pinch, too. Kids come free of charge, but they’re freakin’ expensive to keep! We stretch our budget by shopping thrift stores, ebay, and garage sales, make our own baby food, go to the park a lot, etc. If you’re hardly able to take care of yourself, why have kids? If you are single, why have kids? I understand $h!t happens, but there aren’t a lot of excuses if she never thought about the future.

    • XSANDIEGOCA

She was just a kid probably from a bad home environment herself. This is why you have generation after generation on welfare.

Here’s what I did. One of my sons and his wife and daughter lived in his bedroom. He worked and was able to save a load of money.
I also helped them get a house out in Colorado.

Yes things are much harder now than 40 years ago. So the Family now plays a much bigger roll in helping out the family. I adopted some of my wife’s Asian culture about that. I tell my kids stay at home, but take advantage of that, school or work etc. When I turned 18 you had to get the F out.

We must adapt to the changes or be left behind.

She will soon enough be replaced by a robot which costs cents to run per hour, not even a single dollar, let alone 10. And which does not have to pay income tax, everything it produces goes into its owners pocket. In Asia there are already worker-less restaurants. She’ll be out of work soon enough and then she won’t be able to even feed her kid, let alone herself and she won’t even be able to pay rent for that mouldy apartment and end up on the streets.

    • Nemnor

tinus42, as you comment describes (i.e. more or less, humans being replaced by robots – mainly to increase/maintain profits), this is the inevitable and mindless transformation that are taking place in the world-wide Capitalist system.

But, then again, that would mean less and less people with disposable income to buy what the robots are producing – which would bring the Capitalist system closer to total collapse/chaos. Hence, the reason Capitalism has transformed into state/collective/welfare Capitalism. A system in which taxpayers money is used to cover a range of bailouts and handouts to help prevent (they hope) a total collapse of the Capitalist system (but which WILL eventually collapse, regardless, IF we do not make a fundamental change away from Capitalism to a sustainable alternative system)

But that requires an education. Just not the one you learn in public schools.

This single woman needs to learn something to sell to the world. She needs a skill that companies want.
Whether that is certifed nursing assistant or any number of other occupations in demand in the service industry that will give her a start. Can she operate Microsoft Office? That can be a plus.
If someone has children and they are a single mother, they really need to know the welfare system backwards and forwards in order to take advantage. I suggest reading the government publication they are giving to the illegals for a reference.

And just like that, things can turn around. I know right now it seems hopeless. IF nothing else, join a church and work with the minister.
A lot of churches are now addressing poverty. One church fixes poor people’s cars for free once a year.
We have 4 churches working together to provide a meal once or twice a week during a month.

I sympathize with Adriana’s situation, however, it seems she has ‘comfort’ in her situation. She has a computer apparently, and I’m sure a cell phone. Compared with the living standards and income for most of the world, she is rich. Her housing and medical care are likely subsidised. Where is the father of her child? Is she getting child support? Where is her family? Finally, she has been at McD’s for over 5 years? If you want a better job, it takes deliberate action to find one. People can get out of poverty if they work at it. I’m sure she is elgible for educational grants. Most colleges now have many courses online. She has options she is not using, IMO. Complaining about your situation with no action to make a change is not productive.

Not everything is the government’s fault.
People their chances when they procreate. They also take their chances when they choose a partner.

Thanks for cheering us all up, Mike! :) No, seriously, as a dad with 4 kids and working hard to keep the ship afloat, I feel so sorry for Adriana and the millions like her out there. You are right too Michael: the elite (GOP, Dems, Banks) really don’t care about the peons down below. Sad times.

    • Jill

If one expects a large.government to care about them, they will perpetually disappointed. She is entitled to help with the basic needs of life, but entirely responsible for improving her lot. It is hard but it is not impossible.

  • Nemnor

The root cause of the major socioeconomic issues in the USA and virtually everywhere in the World is the world-wide Capitalist system itself.

The fact we must come to accept is that Capitalism has reached the stage of decadence and is NOT able to permanently recover from an on-going crisis (which began since late-60s/early-70s) by economic means alone.

Bad/corrupt politicians, corrupt corporate bosses and bad choices made by an individual may aggravate an already bad situation, but it is decadent/decaying Capitalism that is the main cause for low wages, a large number of unemployed/underemployed people, poor housing conditions, homelessness (even while a million homes might be empty at any given time, because in usual Capitalism, a proper home is a “privilege” and not a right), malnutrition/starvation (even while certain foods are dumped/destroyed from time to time to keep the price up), lack of education (while cost of education goes up and up, because in usual Capitalism, education is a “privilege” and not a right) poor health and/or inadequate medical attention (because in usual Capitalism, health care is a “privilege” and not a right).

The truth and the light the World must begin to see is that – producing goods and services for PROFITS – as the primary end-purpose of production, is already an out-dated (decadent) mode of production (which will ultimately bring about massive world-wide poverty and massive world-wide destruction – through wars, environmental collapse and economic collapse).

The ONLY permanent solution for the USA and the World is – (as a first step) reorient the production of goods and services to meet the NEEDS OF SOCIETY – as the primary end-purpose of production (with profits being a secondary motive, and eventually, even removing the “profit motive” from production, once the human race is sufficiently enlightened).

However, for a sustainable alternative to Capitalism, many other changes would be necessary. For instance, the exploitation of man by man and country by country would NOT provide for a truly peaceful existance. However, IF given a chance and with a GENUINE democratic system, the COLLECTIVE INTELLIGENCE of the Human Race will find permanent solutions to virtually any and all problems.

    • Richard T.

No thank you. All human systems are corrupt because men are sinful and corrupt. The only solution is Jesus Christ and the Kingdom of God. And we can only enter the Kingdom of God through Christ. Nothing else men do will ever work.

      • nemnor

Richard T. IF we believe that a superior entity/person/force (i.e. God) is the ultimate cause of Human existence, then the “collective intelligence” of the Human Race can actually be seen as an extension of the “mind of God” (right?). The Human Race survived (so far) and has dominated this planet. Hence, if given a chance (if put in the right condition) our “collective intelligence” can be applied to find effective solutions to virtually any and all problems.

  • Jodie Lynn Gaeta

Well, that’s not the way it is now. Black children are much more likely to be born to a single mother than are white children. That being said, overall, more kids are born out of wedlock in every ethnic segment of society. I do not think it is destructive to mention problems specific to the black community that contribute to child poverty: for instance , the high incarceration rate of young black males.Which I don’t blame solely on them; American society has become extremely punitive during the last 20 or so years. Better than the way it was in the Seventies and Eighties with the notorious “revolving door” justice system which regularly released violent felons back into society to commit the same crimes. But not okay. Anyway, I blame politicians and certain clergy and community leaders for continuing to divide people along racial lines. Also the media.

  • Mondobeyondo

It’s true that it is extremely difficult – ok, impossible to survive on $10.50 an hour. But McDonald’s simply can’t afford to pay $15 an hour wages for people who flip burgers and fry fries. They may not go out of business (McDonald’s is far too big for that) – but paying that kind of wage would hurt them big time. And your Big Macs would be in the $6 – $10 range. Bon appetit.

America has fundamentally changed, that is undeniable. Sixty years ago, a single “breadwinner” could earn enough to support not only himself or herself, but also the entire family. And buy a house. And a car. And even go to a movie or an amusement park. That was the norm back then. Try doing that today.

  • NowAlive

Prior to 2008, that had never happened before in all of American history.
    Thank you Barack Obama.

I read that and thought…omgosh. Michael actually revealed that Obama actually told the truth for once! sad face… :-(

“Prior to 2008, that had never happened before in all of American history….”

      what are you talking about?

    • Jill

What statistics do you have to disprove the fact that more businesses have closed than opened during the past eight years?

  • Randy Townsend

It’s not all Obama’s fault – governing bodies across America from county councils to city planning commissions to state legislatures have enacted policies that are lethal to business growth in order to placate the various special interest groups (homosexuals, green energy freaks, environazis, anti-growth luddites, etc.). You must remember a growing portion of the country actually supports this stuff – and that’s where national suicide gets its start.

    • NM Rancher

This has very little to do with Obama. This has been going on since Johnson. They set out to destroy the United States and they have succeeded. Don’t blame the current puppet blame the puppet masters.

Many of the good paying jobs out there requires high level collage degrees heavy on math and or science or very technical skills. The days of getting or keeping a god job with just a high school diploma or a Masters Degree in Medieval Art History are gone. Too many people made stupid decisions in the 1990’s and 2000’s thinking the boom would go on forever. They got into debt, got into stupid marriages, had kids out of wed lock. Then they lost there job in 2008, 2009 and now are not making anything near what they where making. Many 45 or older will never work in a full time job again. Many kids spend thousands of dollars to get degrees that are worthless in todays job market. People, we have to take some degree of personal responsibility for where we wind up. I feel for this woman, and others like her. I was in a similar situation but I changed my circumstances and now I am light years better off, and every day I thank God I had the brains to better my situation.

Don’t look at Wall Street or the too big to fail banks to get a feel for how the economy is doing – take a walk down any main street in America – talk to the people, watch them, listen to them. It’s sad.

For those of you who can relocate, moving to Phoenix is a good thing. I constantly get phone calls and emails from companies looking to hire me. I am taking care of a disabled son, and right now, I don’t want to work. Phoenix is getting a great deal of corporations moving to it. If you can…check out our jobs here in Phoenix. There is a lot of resentment on this blog towards people who are using social services or welfare. Understandably, but is there anyone here who hasn’t made bad choices, had circumstances change for the worse or not needed help of any sort from anyone? Life in these times is difficult at best. Falling into class warfare does nothing to improve the situation. In fact it is what the powers that be want! There will always be people who scam the system, but that doesn’t mean everyone does. Sure this woman could have made better decisions, but the reality is that at least she is working and trying. Before our government became a fascist entity working solely for the benefit of corporations, people could earn a decent living without having to get a higher education. Sadly today even a higher education is not a key to prosperity. I know of several people who have graduated from top universities and are still looking for decent employment. A lot of people on this blog think trade schools are the answer. Not so anymore. Even people in the tech fields are having a difficult time finding work regardless of what the ITT Tech commercials say. Having been in a variety of trades and occupations during my life time, let me say from experience, between illegal immigration, legal immigration, outsourcing and insourcing, trade occupations are no better in many instances then service sector jobs.

Most who posts here are bastions of self reliance. None of them ever received anything from the state. Nothing, ever. If you take help from the state, you are a worthless pos, in the minds of these great xtians, who, I reiterate, have never received a thing from the state. If I were an uneducated 22-year-old single parent living in a high poverty community and if I had any intelligence exceeding that of a watermelon, I would be asking myself how I and my parents and my entire enthic group could be so unfathomably stupid as to allow for any significant fraction of its population to become like me. It’s like gravity and other immutable laws of nature: unfathomable stupidity has a price, and someone has to pay it, and no you cannot make it go away through wishful thinking.

For a damp home, the first thing to do is invest in the building.
Keep the water out. Get the roof fixed, the windows, the walls, the floor. Either ask your landlord to do it, or do it yourself.

Whether you own the home or not, this is always a good investment.

In addition, get rid of the mold immediately after moving in.
Don’t put furniture against cold walls.

Get an electric dehumidifier. This is also an efficient room heater. All the electricity put into the appliance is turned into heat. In addition, the appliance draws out the energy from humidity in the room air to condense and collect as water in the tank. That distilled water can be used, and the heat drawn from the humidity is also expelled into the room.
So, effectively turning a cold damp home into a warmer dryer one.

Today’s America is not much different than America since founding and its entire 250 years history. Americans are taught to believe their country was founded on liberty, human rights, pursuit of happiness and such things. While these are true, they don’t know America is founded also on a goal higher than all that’s mentioned in the Constitution. PROFIT. To be precise, MAXIMUM PROFIT.

As soon as independence was declared and won, what did America do? It sent a few navy ships to the far-away Mediterranean coast to fight a war with pirates there. Why? Profit.

Before you know it, it sent troops to fight a war with Mexico. Why, as Mexico did not invade USA. It did so to take Mexican lands for profits – Texas to California.

The guns on Mexico were barely cooled when America declared war on Britain and British Canada – the War of 1812. Why – they too did not hit or invade America. The U.S. Congress started this war to take over Canada, just like Mexican Texas and California. Big profits. But Canada fought back and bloodied the Yanks so bad the invasion for profit failed.

Barely 30 years into America’s founding, it already started and fought major wars on its northern and southern neighbors. For profits.

America then spent the next few decades minding its own business – and that means extracting profits from its slaves. The South became so filthy rich from slavery that it was the 4th richest country in the world if independent. The South perfectly reflects today’s America – the slave-owners are the corporations, the slaves the general public. As one would expect, the North became very jealous. See, the North didn’t want slavery, they just want the profit.

Then America’s sordid history of expansion-for-profit repeated – the South wanted to expand westward on its slavery model, making it even richer and powerful. The North got pissed and before you know it Civil War! Today, we have the same situation – the big corporations have replaced the government as slave-owner. Now they ordered the government to expand westward under the banner of Trans-Pacific Partnership. Thus reaping unbelievable profit on top of their vast horde of profit, much of which hidden away overseas to the tune of $4 trillion untouchable by the IRS.

Back in 1860, the North came in to stop the South’s maximum profit machine. The North did so by blowing up the South, took it over as colony, at a cost of nearly a million lives. Today, who will come in to to stop the Great American Corporate Profit Machine?

    • Scottar

Don’t confuse America with the big bank agenda which primarily evolves entities like the Rothschilds. These bank entities have so much money they engineer wars for profit while buying politicians to implement them. Your talking about a system that has a beginning ever since bankers came into being.
There’s a reason American became one of the greatest countries in the world and is now deteriorating into a third world banana republic. The big bankers and their social engineering. It’s what Jefferson warned about in the early Republic.

You have been brainwashed by the liberal progressives with false, twisted narratives. Theirs 2 basic ways to make a profit, from the sweat of ones brow or off the backs of others. Big bankers and unscrupulous entities tend to do the latter.
There are many ways people make profit. Some ways are just more honest then others. But it boils down to moralities and a sense of obligation, giving back intelligently instead of just taking and earning. And I’m not talking about just throwing money out for popularity and hoping the masses will make the best of it.

First of all, how did you end up with that 3 year old (Hope and Change?)?

Second, your in Dem Lala land, Chicago, bankrupt capital of the US. This is what you get from bureaucrats that think they can engineer a Utopian, socialist economy. Private sector let you down, no problems, grubmint welfare will catch you when you fall. Woops, that welfare net is no longer quite adequate to break your fall. Here, well give you this freebe crutch so you can hobble on your way. Fix you leg? Sorry, inadequate funds due to the stingy Republicans not raising the debt ceiling. We’re working on government credit cards but we’re running out of ink and paper due to those stingy Republicans and 1 percenters not paying their share for grubmint.

Third, you should think about moving to China where most of US industry has moved due to US grubmint high taxes and over the top regulations. Hurry, before the robots take over everything. Ooooh, that’s right! It’s far worse over there for living conditions and wages then here. Guess they’re ahead of the progressive game. But be assurred that your progressive, dipwad Grubmint is dreaming up more Moombeem fixes! More fantasy Green jobs, yeah, that’s the ticket!

The only way out of this is thru it. We can’t “go back to the way we were”. We have a new world economic system and the only way out of it, for the US to go back to waht it once was, would be to subject the formerly third world nations back to dirt floors and subsistence living. The genie is out of the bottle and we have to readjust to a new norm. Start living within your means, do not give any credibility to the likes of the Kardashian’s or the Miley Cyruses of life. They are fake and only want one thing; to help corporations separate you from your money. Instead of taking your kid to a $10-$12 movie, take him/her to a park and play and talk and just be together. Be smarter than the collective; the corporations and government. Refuse to play their game. And by all means, STOP VOTING, except for candidates for local offices. You know, those that you could actually go talk to. Any national candidate is put there by, you guessed it, corporate interests and the political parties. There is no choice for you and I. Just those with money and power. And the Dems and Repubs are just two sides of the same coin. NOTHING WILL CHANGE UNTIL THE ELECTION SYSTEM CHANGES. The only way to do that is not to vote. A null election will get their interest in a hurry!
