Small Business Ownership In America Is At An All-Time Low

Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on Google+Share on LinkedInShare on StumbleUponEmail this to someone

Small Business - Public DomainAccording to the Federal Reserve, the percentage of American families that own a small business is at the lowest level that has ever been recorded.  In a report that was just released entitled “Changes in U.S. Family Finances from 2010 to 2013: Evidence from the Survey of Consumer Finances“, the Federal Reserve revealed that small business ownership in America “fell substantially” between 2010 and 2013.  Even in the midst of this so-called “economic recovery”, small business ownership in America has now fallen to an all-time low.  If the economy truly was healthy, this would not be happening.  And it isn’t as if Americans are flooding the labor market either.  As I detailed yesterday, the labor force participation rate in this country is at a 36 year low.  That would not be happening if the economy was actually healthy either.  The truth is that the middle class in America is dying, and this new report from the Federal Reserve is more evidence of this very harsh reality.

In order to build wealth, middle class Americans either need to have their own businesses or they need good jobs.  Sadly, the percentage of Americans that own a business continues to decline steadily.  In the report that I mentioned above, the Federal Reserve says that the proportion of U.S. families that have an ownership interest in a small business fell from 13.3 percent in 2010 to a brand new all-time low of 11.7 percent in 2013.

This is one of the factors that is increasing the gap between the extremely wealthy and the rest of us in this country.  And of course another of the major factors is the steady decline in good paying jobs.

The U.S. Competitiveness Project at Harvard Business School is chaired by professors Michael E. Porter and Jan W. Rivkin.  It just released a new report entitled “An Economy Doing Half Its Job”, and it addressed the fact that the middle class is deeply struggling even though many large U.S. corporations have been thriving.  The following is an excerpt from an article in the Boston Globe about this report…

In a statement, Porter added: “Shortsighted executives may be satisfied with an American economy where firms operating here are winning without lifting US living standards. But leaders with longer perspectives understand that companies can’t thrive for long while their workers and their communities struggle.”

Unfortunately, this is not likely to change any time soon.  In fact, that same report discovered that Harvard Business School alumni foresee “falling pay and fewer openings for full-time jobs” for American workers in the years ahead…

U.S. workers face a dim future, with stagnant or falling pay and fewer openings for full-time jobs.

That’s the picture that emerges from a survey of Harvard Business School alumni.

More than 40 percent of the respondents foresee lower pay and benefits for workers. Roughly half favor outsourcing work over hiring staffers. A growing share prefer part-time employees. Nearly half would rather invest in new technology than hire or retain workers.

The Obama administration continues to tell us that the unemployment rate is “going down” and that the economy is recovering, but that does not match the reality of what most Americans are experiencing on a day to day basis.

As David Stockman recently so aptly put it, outside of health and education the U.S. economy has not produced a single job since mid-2000 even though our population has grown greatly since that time…

In a few deft seconds, a “no jobs” nobody who apparently doesn’t actually have one himself,  essentially explained the contents of the chart below to his silenced CNBC hosts. Over the course of 170 “jobs Fridays” since mid-2000, the latter have apparently never noticed the single most stunning fact embedded in the monthly BLS report. Namely, that outside of health and education there has not been one net new job created in the American economy since July 2000! Yes, not a single new job—as in none, nein, nichts, nada, zip!

In addition, most of the new jobs that are being “added to the economy” each month are part-time jobs.  Right now, we still have 1.4 million fewer full-time jobs than we did in 2008 even though more than 100,000 people are added to the population each month.

What this means is that the middle class is shrinking.

We are witnessing an increasing concentration of wealth among the ultra-wealthy, and most of the rest of us are getting poorer.  As a recent CNN article detailed, the Federal Reserve has also discovered that the gap between the rich and the poor in America is larger than the Fed has ever recorded before…

In its Study of Consumer Finances, released every three years, the Fed found that the wealthiest 3% of American households controlled 54.4% of the nation’s wealth in 2013, a slight increase from its last survey in 2010. It’s also substantially higher from the 44.8% they held in 1989, showing how quickly the income divide has been growing over the past decade or so.

At the same time, the share of wealth held by the bottom 90% fell to 24.7% in 2013. That’s compared to 33.2% in 1989.

How close does the share of wealth for the bottom 90 percent have to go before we admit that we have a major problem on our hands?

Is there anyone out there that would be okay with it hitting zero percent?

One of the big reasons why the wealthy have been doing so well is because the stock market has been soaring.  The money printing policies of the Federal Reserve have sent stock prices to unprecedented heights.  This has overwhelmingly benefited the extremely wealthy

According to recent data from the Federal Reserve, America has the lowest level of stock ownership in 18 years. Yet stock ownership for the wealthy is at a new high—and that has accounted for most of their good fortune compared to the rest of America.

In fact, the Fed says that the wealthiest top 10 percent of all Americans now own 81 percent of all stocks…

Stock ownership is even more concentrated when it comes to share of total stock holdings. In 2010, the latest period available, the top 10 percent of Americans by net worth held 81 percent of all directly held or indirectly held stocks, according to Edward N. Wolff, an economics professor at New York University who specializes in inequality and Federal Reserve data.

Wolff said that share—which has not been released yet for 2013—has probably gone even higher than 81 percent since 2010.

Since the last financial crisis, the Federal Reserve has been very good to the elite.

But most of the rest of us have had a really hard time.

Until more Americans start getting good jobs and building small businesses, things are not going to turn around for the middle class.

But the policies being pursued by our politicians continue to kill good jobs and continue to kill small businesses, so I wouldn’t expect significant changes any time soon.

  • VegasBob

You might also add that it has become impossible for any small business to compete with national chains of (1) big box retail stores, (2) restaurants, (3) home improvement centers or (4) fast food outlets.

As long as the Federal government is controlled by the very wealthy, big corporations will continue to prosper and the middle class will continue to shrink.

    • Joe in OH

You make a great point. Try to think of a sector that isn’t dominated by corporations through their franchises. Hotels, communications, entertainment, groceries, auto parts and repair, everything but the little girl on the sidewalk selling lemonade. . . and the local government’s after her because she doesn’t have a permit!!

      • Firstgarden

Several lemonade stands run by children have been shut down. Try googling it. The joker went wild in the local heath dep’t.

      • David Mowers

Fed loan programs guarantee that smaller entities can no longer compete and all of them will be put out of business.

    • Richard

True. But many of them are shuttering too.

    • David Mowers

Because Wall Street doesn’t create anything. They ruin markets that already existed putting other companies out of business with easy money from the Fed.

  • sth_txs

Thanks Federal Reserve! And big government!

How is Bashar “our” enemy? He hasn’t threatened me, has he threatened you? Perhaps he is a threat to the plans of the Saudis, the Qataris and the Wall St cronies to make profits from control of pipelines?
If anything that makes him as friend.
It is also a little arrogant for any country to launch airstrikes in another country unless it has permission.

Just as a matter of information, I have been told by someone in the community/land planning business that developers are required to put 60% down on a loan. Not a small business, or maybe they are, but that is what the banks are doing. And, I also heard on MSM commentary, that small businesses are faced with 6% or more in loan rates. I cannot fathom the disconnect between what you say in these articles and what I am reading and hearing in the way of economic stats. Someone is misrepresenting the stats. and I think it is the Fed.

    • Richard

That’s right – the Fed is the Master Manipulator.

      • Firstgarden

Almost. There’s at least one level of puppet master above the Fed.

        • Richard

True. No denial there. But, the Fed is the Largest Tentacle on the Rothschild Giant Squid – By Far.

    • David Mowers

Yes. I have been told that real estate deals are now required to put down half or more to close. One bank told someone I met that the only way they would even consider writing a commercial property mortgage was for 80% down.

If you had 80% you might as well wait a few more years and just buy it outright so what’s point of having banks?

Our small business is getting charged, “fees” instead of interest (that’s how they avoid criminal prosecution with semantics) these, “fees” range from 18-45% of loan value to borrow money.

  • Guest

I remember in the early 2000s when my savings was earning about $500 every month. Last month the interest earnings on my savings wasn’t even $20. That’s right, not even $20. I’m currently “earning” 30 basis points on my savings which is in a local credit union. The Federal Reserve has deprived Americans of untold billions in interest income through ZIRP. And there’s really no other place that I think is safe to put my life savings in order to earn higher yield. I’m not going to risk losing it in the stock market. I put some of it in precious metals, but look at how they have suppressed the prices of gold and silver.

I’m ANGRY. The crimes of the elite have gone on for too long. It’s not fair. I’m tired of being screwed over by these psychopaths.

    • Syrin

Funny how the zero percent interest rates screws over the responsible, isn’t it?

      • Guest

I don’t know what to believe anymore. None of my coworkers and very few of my acquaintances outside of work see things the way I do. Sometimes I wish that I didn’t have the understanding that I have.

        • Mike Smithy

I think many of us can empathize with your position. Most people are willful deniers of the obvious because the alternative is too painful for them to acknowledge.

        • Richard

I know how you feel but stay the course in holding most of your wealth in precious metals. Keep enough cash on hand and in checking to live on till September 30th, 2015. Late Summer 2015 TPTB (ThePowersThatBe) will probably take PM even lower, maybe much lower. Then the Collapse of everything Paper around the end of September and PM will do a U Turn and sky rocket higher. This is Their Plan to Destroy the wealth of the American people. Of course, One needs to make Other preparations as can be imagined, especially Spiritual. Make peace with Almighty God through the Lord Jesus Christ by receiving Him. Then stay very close by His side and He will take care of You. God bless.

          • Annette Calkins

Okay, if we are still here after Sept 2015, PM – Precious Metals, would be the thing to set aside for that time. Got it!

          • Richard

Yes. Most of us will still be here as we then move into a most Horrific time of human history. All by design of TPTB.

          • Hammerstrike

For the parasite control is defined as the ability to draw more and more blood from the host and minimizing its resistance to that state of affairs.

That the host is not just no longer getting stronger but growing weaker by the day is only incidental, the parasite cannot afford to draw less blood and lower its level of control.

          • Guest

Thanks, Richard. I have peace with God. I’ve been a Christian for 19 years.

Sep 2015? Really, that far out. Heck, you’re an optimist.

          • Richard

Not really regarding this matter. However, it seems that TPTB have shown Their hand. They have engineered a Collapse, and around the end of September 2015 seems to be Their Chosen time for it. They go by Occultist Dates and Numbers. This is Their Modus Operandi for Their father is the Devil.

          • Annette Calkins

I think reading the Shemitah articles or perusing Cahn’s book at the book store, will definitely give you a different slant on the 7 year cycle.

        • Syrin

Which is all the more reason to NOT do what they are. The herd is going to be culled. They are planning on it. Remember, they are suppressing the prices so they can accumulate by the literal TON. I would do more of what they are doing, and less of what your co-workers are doing.

THE banks are stockpiling homes all over the nation and selling them to china and other nations for the sole purpose of making as many americans homeless as possible and to force them into the camps because obama made it against the law to be homeless.

The banks do not plan to ever put these homes back on the market.

Have you seen pictures of Detroit?? There are lots of entire neighborhoods like the city of Detroit all over the nation.

Obama has also sent SWAT teams to mow down and burn the tent cities that millions of seniors have moved into since losing their homes.

All roads lead to concentration camps.

        • sharonsj

I know some of you right-wingers blame Obama for every damn thing, but don’t be ridiculous. The Federal homelessness act was passed in 1986, when Ronald Reagan was president!

From Wikipedia: “The National Coalition for the Homeless reports a growing trend in the U.S. towards criminalizing the homeless. To this end, CITIES across the
country increasingly outlaw activities such as sleeping, eating,
sitting, and begging in public spaces, and selectively enforce more
neutral laws—such as those prohibiting open containers or loitering—against homeless populations. Violators of such laws typically incur criminal penalties, which result in fines and/or incarceration.”

I repeat: CITIES are passing those laws, not Obama. And they control SWAT teams, not Obama.

        • holoh

LOL. You are infatuated with Obama, lady. You are absolutely nutzo!!!!!

      • wsp

The purpose of zero percent interest is to deprive you of the your ability to fight the globalist. By depriving you of an income, they force you to be a slave, thus keeping you busy or rendering you defenseless. Zero percent interest is economic war against constitutionalists, libertarians, Christians, etc because they are “Savers” and responsible and thus are hurt by the policy.
The policy is NOT about anything other than destroying you non-militarily. The globalist know that they can wreck our society by depriving us of income and capital, and that is what they are doing and we are not going to do a damn thing about it.

        • Richard

Most Americans will not realize they have been enslaved until – They can reach out and touch the barbed wire.

        • sharonsj

Zero per cent interest is a war against everyone who isn’t rich, no matter who you are.

        • Hammerstrike

No, they take the interest, simple as that.

The parasite does not care about sustainability, it define control as the ability to take more and more blood, this even as the host is weakening.

    • peace angel

THE ONLY SOLUTION IS FOR ALL AMERICANS TO TAKE ONE YEAR OFF FROM PAYING FEDERAL TAXES TO SHUT THEM DOWN.

NO MONEY, NO PROBLEMS FOR THE WORKER BEES.

NO MONEY, BIG PROBLEMS FOR THE BANKER NAZIS.

SADLY, MOST AMERICANS BELIEVE THE LIES OF THE FEDS AND WOULD BE TOOOO SCARED TO NOT FILE OR PAY TAXES FOR ONE YEAR TO SHUT OFF THEIR FUNDING AND FORCE THEM TO GET A BUDGET LIKE THE REST OF US.

OBAMA WOULD BE FORCED TO STOP PRINTING 75 BILLION DOLLARS PER MONTH FOR A YEAR.

THAT WOULD HAVE TO FIX SOME THINGS.

      • Mike Smithy

I agree. If Keynesian demand side money printing economics is such a good idea then why does the federal government need to collect taxes? Let them just print the money they need. TAX REVOLT NOW. I think the term”Tax Holiday” has a nice ring to it.

        • wsp

Taxes are used by the global elite as a way to enrich the criminals they need to “enforce” the globalists crime mafia manifesto. In the end, it is about dominating and controlling us more than it is about money.

      • Firstgarden

Interesting post. Careful not to overdo it, though. Or the thought-bots will pick it up and bring attention on you. And any known or suspected “organizers” will be imprisoned.

It sounds like a great way to bring about martial law, as well.

      • K2

It works in theory (not one year though they have to do it for many years for that to happen). But it is easier said than done.

A lot of solutions from multiple angles needs to found.

        • K2

And banks alone (that are responsible for taxes) are not the only problem, big corps and govt (that are responsible for regulations) are to blame too.

People need to work hard to earn more, save more and vote for candidates other than repubs and dems as the parties are controlled by CGB’s. (Corporations, govt and banks)

    • selaretus

What is the point in having ‘savings’ at zero per cent…er wait…..actually it is 0.01%??? I am most certainly not going to be ‘investing’ in the Crock Market, so I have started to remove all my meager savings as cash and put it in a fire proof box at home. Why should the bankers have it?

      • Richard

Actually They have been stealing it since the Fed began, through the erosion of the $’s purchasing power. Back in 1963 when I worked at a gas station, a gallon of gas was 25 cents. Also, our quarters were 90% silver. Today I can purchase a gallon of gas , But not for 25 cents – Try $3.16. However, my 1963 quarter at 90% silver is worth $3.49, even at Todays low Silver price. So, I can Convert my 1963 quarter into Paper and Still buy me a gallon of gas and get 33 cents back in Pock metal. Do you Not see how TPTB have stolen from US by the billions and trillions of Dollars over these more than 100 years now?

      • wsp

I said the same thing years ago before I truly understood the “Crime Syndicate”. Sir, I hate to tell you, but the bankers don’t care—they can just add a few more zero’s. Now, don’t get me wrong, I understand the emotion, but in the end if it makes you feel better do it but know that it doesn’t hurt them one way or another—in fact, they hope you do so that when they do away with U.S. currency and go global they can steal more of your labor by saying if it isn’t in the system it loses more, whatever.
IOW, heads they win, tails you lose—-unless you are an idiot you will lose to the globalists as informed, intelligent people are their enemy and they will destroy you with their fiat currency and ignorant, willing, sheeple serfs one way or another.
        Game over—EVIL ONE!

        • Richard

wsp. You leave God out of the equation. God wins. God’s people win. The Lord Jesus Christ will utterly Destroy the Evil ones. Read Revelation19:11-21.

          • wsp

Richard, I stand corrected—-I find it hard to believe that there is not a good God out in the universe somewhere, and while I am not expert on revelations, I want to believe that ultimately good will triumph over evil—but that will be a LONG TIME from now and much evil will take place. I used to think God controlled the earth but now realize evil does—-God may control the universe but SATAN owns the earth, it is his, and his only. Sorry. but I have studied long enough to be sure of that—-but I remain hopeful that there is a good God out there who will let those of us who do not commit evil rest in peach from this hell we call earth!

          • Richard

I understand how dark things look for this World right now and how much worse they will become, But I want to reassure you by the immutable and all powerful eternal Word of the Living GOD. God is in Control of Everything and even the Devil is God’s Devil. HE has him on a short leash. HE is allowing him a little time to do some great evil upon this earth, But will utterly Destroy him and all his minions. GOD’s people will live and be forever with HIM in the new Jerusalem which comes down from heaven. Please read the final chapters of Revelation 19 through 22. GOD prevails. God’s people are victorious in HIM. And God bless You.

    • wsp

Sir, you are right to be angry—-the globalists via the Federal Reserve have hijacked our country, destroyed our way of life, and enslaved and impoverished us. Sadly, people talk and talk about “we have to take our country back” but that is not going to happen.
People who tried to be responsible, who fought and died for our liberty, who did the right thing, supported our country, raised good moral children, etc., etc., etc., are THE ENEMY of the globalists—they have it out for you and me and sadly we are screwed. People can talk tough all they want but the criminal sociopaths that print the money RULE US and there is nothing we can do other than non-comply and be punished even further.
Sometime in the near future the United States constitution will be abolished and Americans will be assimilated into the global feudal system (that already exists, just not formal yet). At that point many people will realize what has happened but it will be too late.

      • Richard

Yes. The barbed wire will bite into their skin.

The Too Big To Fail banks need low interest rates so their crappy holdings increase in value (price is inverse to the interest rate).

“In 2010, Section 13(3) was modified by the Dodd-Frank bill, which replaced the phrase “individuals, partnerships and corporations” with the vaguer phrase “any program or facility with broad-based eligibility.” As explained in the notes to the bill: Only Broad-Based Facilities Permitted. Section 13(3) is modified to remove the authority to extend credit to specific individuals, partnerships and corporations. Instead, the Board may authorize credit under section 13(3) only under a program or facility with “broad-based eligibility.” What programs have “broad-based eligibility” is not clear from a reading of the Section, but it isn’t individuals or local businesses. It also isn’t state and local governments.” –Ellenbrown(dot)com

I read just today that central banks have invested $29,000,000,000,000 (that’s $29 TRILLION) into the Dow which explains why it is soaring as the economy comes crashing down all around us.

From personal expirence I can say it is now extremely difficult to start a profitable small business. Everything needed to keep going is more expensive while sales are nonexistive. I can’t compete with the Feds’ ability to print and “give” it to the big banks.

  • Sandbagger

We looked into buying out the small businesses of two different places, each about 20 years apart. Each time, there was something wrong. The first time, the owner wouldn’t let us see his books before purchase. (What?!)
The second, this year, the owner’s asking price didn’t jive with earnings. We think he lost big in ’08 and now that he wants to retire, he’s looking for a sucker to make up the loss by way of a bloated purchase price.

So, yeah…there are some who want to own a small business that another is selling. But where are the honest/realistic sellers?

When these guys go out, then you’ll really see a plunge in small business ownership.

  • DJohn1

The IRS rules. The small business person does not have a chance with the complicated rules of running a business put down by the governments. I refer to Federal, State, City, County governments and the way they go after small business. They mouth a good game in political circles of how we should all try our hand at working for ourselves.
The truth is it is virtually impossible to make it as a small business. You almost have to have a big business partner to make it happen.
    It wasn’t always like that.
We are in the age of corporations and the corporations make the rules. They do this by sponsoring politicians in the Congress and most of these so called representatives have over a million or more of personal funds.
So it is no wonder that the corporations have made sure a small business person cannot make it in today’s financial world. There are exceptions. They are few and far between.
These guys running the corporations are international in nature. Often they have four or five different passports from different countries. They often hid huge sums of money in off-shore accounts. They are not accountable to our rules anymore. What they are capable of doing is moving mountains with their influence.
    Do not underestimate them.
Lots of luck trying to change the way the rules work.

Listen, I work in a level 1 trauma hospital in Phoenix.

Before I started working in the medical field, EVERYONE I have ever met has said to go into the medical field, that there will “always be nurses”, “sick people”, it’s the number 1 industry, highest pay, best job security, on and on and on…

Now, don’t get me wrong, a lot of medical professionals are very well paid and make a good solid middle-upper middle class living, But it’s not what you think it is…

I work in radiology and the “glut” of x-ray techs is astronomical… meaning, there are virtually no jobs in radiology (X-ray, CT, Nuc-med, Ultrasound, MRI) The waiting list for most x-ray schools is 4-5 years!!! unless you want to pay 50k for Carrington who just lost their certs!

Every tech I know, wishes that they would have went into nursing instead… And guess what? My hospital has already cut 60 nursing jobs!

We made our 2nd quarter goal as a hospital, and are eligible for a $200 bonus per employee, guess what? The hospital doesn’t have the money to pay it! They have taken Microsoft Office off EVERY computer in the hospital, including Physicians, in an effort to “save” money…

Now, our hospital holds about 85-90% occupancy at all times, so what’s the problem? More than half don’t have any insurance… So the hospital foots the bill.

I realize that circumstances are different from hospital to hospital, area by area etc…

But I want people to understand that even the number 1 “Golden” industry is struggling and becoming bloated and so I can only imagine the outlook for all of the other industries…

    • kfilly

Don’t worry. Obamacare will come to the rescue. Sarcasm off

      • XSANDIEGOCA

Single Payer will become the new War Cry!

    • Rachel

I wonder what the hospitals pay their administrators in regards to salaries. If hospital bills were fair people who do not have insurance would be able to pay their bills in a reasonable period of time….

It seems that the goal of for profit hospitals is to suck all the money they can from the insurance by ordering test upon test and also screwing over the self payers with over inflated bills (why not charge self pay what medicare or an insurance company would get charged? It’s not fair to try and make people pay a thousand percent markup on those who really do want to pay and not just milk the system).

Too much corruption in this world. The only reason I am still here is for my husband…I don’t think he could handle my leaving yet.

I am just so tired of knowing the true nature of myself and the rest of humanity (if that is not an oxy moron I don’t know what is). Such a disgraceful and horrible place we are forced to endure for a period of time.

      • Orange Jean

As to hospital administrator salaries… from what I can tell it’s one of the most ridiculously overpaid jobs available. 20 years ago the salary range was something like 500-600K per year (at least in the Boston area) and most of those people were not even doctors. Please tell me if I’m wrong!

        • Sandbagger

According to many of Robin Cook’s novels, the top brass of a hospital is responsible for making profit. Bottom line. That lay-offs are happening in this industry is no surprise. MOST companies are padding their profits in this way.

      • David Mowers

That’s been reported as well the average hospital administrator now earns 1-2 million a year.

    • Syrin

I’m a physician, and I know of 4 MD’s under 40 years of age who have left medicine all together. Everyone I know is looking for an out. Remember, the BULK of Obamadoesntcare does not go in effect until 2015. As bad as you think things MIGHT be, they are going to be FAR FAR WORSE !!

      • XSANDIEGOCA

The War Cry will then commence for Single Payer. This was baked in the cake from the git go!

      • Orange Jean

I agree, totally. And one thing I’m seeing also is a lot of docs in this area going for part-time work instead. They are sick of working hours and hours taking away from their family. It makes it really hard to get an appointment, sometimes months in advance.

      • K2

I dont get it, doesnt obama care add more patients to the rolls?

    • Annette Calkins

Former Phoenix dwellers, here. We left Phoenix, due to the drought and the illegals drain on the system. So sorry you are stuck in this.

    • Orange Jean

Excellent post! I would point out however that the same type of thing has happened in the past for other types of careers… as soon as there’s not enough workers in a certain field, out comes the hype that that’s the most secure field to go into and if you do so you’ll always have a decent job. Next comes everyone and his neighbor (or his neighbor’s kids) go into that field so they can get a good job. For a few years there will be enough good jobs it works… then the same thing as you saw going into a medical career happens.

I’d seen this pattern in the past (I’m in my 60s) in engineering, IT, environmental planning and related work, as well as the construction trades (including architects). I suspect STEM is on it’s way next, just as soon as they’ve convinced enough kids to go into it. I ran into this myself by going for an “interdisciplinary” type of degree (in my case geography), which was pushed as being the best way to get work when I was in school. But I have had to switch from environmental work to public health, with a heavy dose of computer programming.

I’m just waiting for the switch to ICD-10-CM to push a lot of those in the medical field to go right over the edge with new requirements for coding and the fact that a lot of docs and hospitals had previously invested a ton of money to get their data collection and medical records software up to speed for ICD-9-CM. Ooops… time to change!

Very often the demise of a particular field is accelerated by some sort of political move – in the case you mention it’s Obamacare and it’s fall out…. but it almost always seems to have some other thing happen (generally a policy push).

It seems the only thing we can do is be aware, keep on your toes, try to get as broad a skill set as possible (rather than overspecializing, although that takes guts because the specialists always get paid more during the high demand times). We have to be willing to adapt to have a chance of surviving!

      • David Mowers

It’s been reported that 2-4 million STEM graduates are looking for work right now.

    • Sandbagger

Remember when our country (U.S.) was going to run a shortage of pharmacists and encouraged young people to go into that field?

      Well guess what? Another glut.

      • Firstgarden

I don’t know about you, but here in Southern California, almost all the pharmacies are staffed by Asians exclusively. Please understand, I like Asians. But I pity any non-Asian trying to get hired by these pharmacies. And I don’t buy the idea that Asians are the only ones with high test scores. Affirmative Discrimination just exacerbates another glut situation.

Okay, according to the seven-year business cycle, or the “Shemitah”, this next year is when we crash and burn, again. It’s something that Asset Management Companies write about, not the Shemitah, but the seven-year cycle. We can all go look up the crashes. So, September 2015 is the next crash. Will it be world-wide? Might be. I know we will feel it here in America, and it will be bad. Yes, it co-ordinates with the Blood Moons. Amazing, isn’t it? So, if that is on the horizon, what should we be doing? We are moving to a less expensive place, where we can prepare. Should a Rapture happen, and we’re outta here, way to go! With that in the future, I don’t think that I want to open a business. For what? Just take what I got and live under the radar. I guess I could also leave some books behind, should we get Raptured, that tells people where we went and to enjoy what I saved up.

“I have duly received four proof sheets of your explanation of the
Apocalypse with your letters of December 29th and January 8th; in the
last of which you request that so soon as I shall be of opinion that the
explanation you have given is correct I would express it in a letter to
you. From this you must be so good as to excuse me because I make it an
invariable rule to decline ever giving opinions on new publications in
any case whatever. No man on earth has less taste or talent for
criticism than myself and least and last of all should I undertake to
criticise works on the Apocalypse. It is between fifty and sixty
years since I read it and I then considered it as merely the ravings of a
maniac no more worthy nor capable of explanation than the incoherences
of our own nightly dreams. I was therefore well pleased to see in
your first proof sheet that it was said to be not the production of St
John but of Cerinthus a century after the death of that apostle. Yet the
change of the author’s name does not lessen the extravagances of the
composition and come they from whomsoever they may I cannot so far
respect them as to consider them as an allegorical narrative of events
past or subsequent. There is not coherence enough in them to
countenance any suite of rational ideas. You will judge therefore from
this how impossible I think it that either your explanation or that of
any man in the heavens above or on the earth beneath can be a correct
one. What has no meaning admits no explanation and pardon me if I say
with the candor of friendship that I think your time too valuable and
your understanding of too high an order to be wasted on these
paralogisms. You will perceive I hope also that I do not consider
them as revelations of the Supreme Being whom I would not so far
blaspheme as to impute to Him a pretension of revelation couched at the
same time in terms which He would know were never to be understood by
those to whom they were addressed. In the candor of these observations I
hope you will see proofs of the confidence esteem and which I entertain
      for you.”

Let’s see…starting a small business. Ok, be prepared to work 100 hours a week. Be prepared for a failure rate of 80% in five years. Be prepared, because you will use Schedule C to the max, for the IRS/Franchise Tax Board to take a very unhealthy interest in your life. Be prepared to deal with government functionnaires who make lavish salaries with benes to make your life a living hell in their lust for taxes, fees etc. A friend of mine owns a small repair shop and if his deposits for UI are not made on-the-spot, they call from Sacramenta and threaten to shut him down! You may have to deal with employees. Dealing with employees is a minefield. Be prepared to live with strain most people can not imagine. Be prepared to grow old before your time. Be prepared to get no respect. My hat is off to anyone with the guts to do it. Most Americans do not have a clue.

My family’s small business was audited within three years.

Now the I.R.S. docks our bank account for their “projected tax liability” so that, even though we make no profit, they get what they consider to be their end.

        And they wonder why….

        • David Mowers

The I.R.S. refuses to consider the costs of starting the business, credit card debt, credit accounts from suppliers and home equity as deductible costs since they occurred before we incorporated therefore those costs do not technically exist and the money we spent paying them off was all income so the I.R.S. screwed us from the get.

But at least the top five oil majors got THEIR SUBSIDIES PAID WITH MY MONEY RIGHT?

No use in starting a business when there are long hours of paperwork to keep your business in compliance with millions of pages of regulations from the local to the state to the federal level–hours that could and should be spent building your business (oops, forgot, Owe-Bama is going to build your business).

All the big corporations are backed by The Feds and have direct access to foreign markets where they can import products and undercut nearly all small businesses.

Wow! Sounds like a passage specifically written so all the poor, starving slobs in the world would feel better about living in squalor so that one day they could live the good life in Heaven with Jesus and God. What a bunch of B.S.

If true spirituality was taught to the people they would be more empowered and more bold then those that have lived with the promise that one day they will be rewarded.

Instead we get multiple religions which pretty much all promise the same thing to their followers. Eternal life and a blissful afterlife.

I guess this is just too appealing for our primal brain to pass up and we fall for it; hook, line and sinker.

      • Firstgarden

Have you searched out this matter personally? Have you examined all the evidences life affords? Do you love truth? At all costs? Are you willing to be wrong for the sake of finding truth?

If we as Christians are wrong, then we really have little to be concerned about, having sought to live good lives.

But, if you are wrong, in thrusting aside God and Messiah, then you are in very deep trouble.

Wouldn’t you at least want to make sure? That’s only done by searching the matter out, as opposed to rejecting it from afar.

You might know what you believe. But do you know WHY you believe it?

Are you really honest with yourself and others, when it comes to the deep things of life?

        • Louie

The argument that says “well if we are wrong at least we lived a good and just life,” is illogical.

A person can live a good and just life and not be a Christian. There are many who profess to be Christian who do not live that way. Or who think they are but are woefully deceived.

Spirituality can be a beautiful thing, it is religion that takes this beauty and twists and perverts it.

People are meant to live lives that are full of the wonders given to us in a human form. All pleasures, but to also practice restraint because there are consequences to every action, thought and deed that we do (to ourselves and to others).

The human mind is such a complex thing and can perceive something to be truth when it fact it is quite the opposite.

Christians try and please and worship something that never answers back. They are taught it is a sin and wrong to question God–even though God has supposedly given this ability to man. That the spirit of God lives within all of us.

Too bad when we peel away all the fancy and clever catch phrases we realize that we all have the choice to do the right thing or the wrong thing. God controls nothing and instead leaves it up to you and I.

If God controlled NOTHING, then there would be no Ten Commandments, no “karma” that the Hindus speak of, no intrinsic sense of right and wrong. All would be purely jungle law. If He controlled nothing, we would be dead right now.

Colossians 1:17 – “He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together.”

Acts 17:28 – “For in him we live, and move, and have our being.”

And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power.”

He has given us free will, but not with an infinite leash. Free will is only part of the equation. There is also His Providential Government. He acts, intervenes across history to control the outcome of things. If he did not, there would be little or no life left on the planet.

If those dead big Businesses were allowed to liquidate, and sold off those dead assets, the successful middle class would have able to buy those assets, created new businesses, created new jobs, and saved the middle classes, thus the gap. Bailouts don’t work, if their business strategy/model doesn’t change.

CEPR estimated that average American savers got screwed out of 1-3 Trillion Dollars in real estate profits by the Fed’s actions. Money that normally would have built new wealth for the lower classes got restricted to the investor class.

That’s a perfect example of Government Redistribution of Wealth to the top earners.

The Govt. birth death model for unemployment statistically creates 10s of thousands of jobs each month due to the growth of small businesses. Yet small business at an all time LOW. Somethings not right here.

Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.

I’ve been around for quite a few years and this is the absolute worst shape I’ve ever seen this country in. We have a government that simply does not care about the men and women of Main Street. It’s disheartening and it’s totally disgusting.

Then why do you keep voting for the same idiots?

Aren’t you glad you bailed out Wall Street?

About three-quarters of all ‘small businesses’ are non-employee companies (a blog, for example,) and nearly the same number of small businesses that open every year close every year. And the ones that do survive, on average, survive only three years.

Small businesses are the backbone of the American economy? Hardly.

75% of all jobs are small business.

I really miss the 1990’s! Back then, uneployment was around 4% which meant everyone who wanted a job had a job and companies actually competed to recruit employees. Also, you could arrive at the airport 20 minutes before your flight and still catch it, you could pick up the tab for dinner and not regret it the next morning, and you didn’t have to worry about getting shot by the police during a routine traffic stop.

Did you know ZIRP was made permanent Fed policy in 2010?

From now on whenever an industry or large employer cannot make money they automatically qualify for Fed loan programs and financing. They now have an incentive to continue failing because what money could come easier than bail out money?

Also, Fed policy is now ‘bail-in’ meaning that whatever money you hold in a bank beyond FDIC-insured amounts is subject to seizure by your bank if they fail. You will save your own bank by giving them your money which they will give you shares of worthless stock in trade for.
