Ted Koppel Is Buying Freeze-Dried Food For The Day When A Cyberattack Takes Out The Power Grid

Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on Google+Share on LinkedInShare on StumbleUponEmail this to someone

Central Park - Public DomainMost Americans have absolutely no idea how incredibly vulnerable our electrical grid is, but Ted Koppel does.  For many years, Koppel was the level-headed host of Nightline on ABC, but now he is issuing a very chilling warning to America.  For more than a year, he investigated potential threats to our power grid, and he has detailed what he discovered in a new book entitled “Lights Out“.  He is convinced that a massive cyberattack could take down our entire electrical grid for an extended period of time, and he was horrified to learn that the Department of Homeland Security really doesn’t have a plan for how to deal with this kind of a scenario.

What Koppel found out during the course of his investigation freaked him out so much that he actually decided to buy freeze-dried food for himself, his children, and even his grandchildren.  The following comes from CBS News

In “Lights Out,” Koppel paints a grim picture of a paralyzing power outage in the form of an all-out cyberattack on the nation’s electrical grid.

“It’s frightening,” Koppel said. “I mean, it is frightening enough that my wife and I decided we were going to buy enough freeze-dried food for all of our kids and their kids.”

Koppel believes that Russia, China and Iran already have the ability to conduct such attacks.  And actually, the truth is that many other nations such as North Korea have been rapidly developing the capability to conduct such operations as well.

It is only a matter of time until we see absolutely massive cyberattacks unleashed against national power grids, and the United States is the most likely target.  Unfortunately for us, our government has done very little to prepare for this eventuality.  Here is more from CBS News

Koppel says the one agency that would be ready to counter a cyberattack such as this is the Department of Homeland Security. But are they ready?

“No,” he said. “I’ve talked to every former Secretary of Homeland Security, and they all acknowledge there is no plan.”

And the current Secretary, Jeh Johnson, didn’t offer much guidance to Koppel, either: “I kept asking ‘What’s the plan?’ Why wait until disaster strikes? Why not tell ’em? Do you have a plan?’ And he just sort of pointed up at a shelf filled with white binders and he said, ‘Look, I’m sure there’s something up there somewhere.'”

But we have been warned.  In fact, just recently there was a major congressional hearing about this.  At that hearing, one member of Congress explained that there is a significant attack on our power grid once every four days

Such attacks hit the nation’s electric grid once every four days, according to estimates, Rep. Randy Weber, a Texas Republican, said at the House Subcommittee on Research and Technology hearing. The session was focused on better protecting the nation’s power grid and identifying its vulnerability to cyberattacks.

In over 300 cases of significant cyber and physical attacks since 2011, suspects have never been identified,” Weber said.

And of course it isn’t just a cyberattack that we need to be concerned about.  As I wrote about just over a month ago, a giant electromagnetic pulse either from the sun or from a weapon could fry our grid at any time as well.

Perhaps this is not something that you are making preparations for personally, but the White House sure is.  According to the Houston Chronicle, the White House just released a plan that details how it would respond to an EMP event…

The White House Thursday released a contingency plan for about the most terrifying scenario possible: a massive electromagnetic pulse (EMP) that wipes out the power grid.

Just imagine no more cell phones, Internet, credit cards, gas pumps, running water, electric lights or industry in a single fateful moment.

It could come from a solar flare that sends ultra-high-energy particles cascading toward the earth, frying every electrical transformer they encounter. So the White House, in conjunction with 24 other federal agencies, published a “National Space Weather Strategy” and accompany action plan, outlining a response if such a disaster were to occur.

I don’t know if any of us can really imagine how crazy things would get if the lights went out and never came back on.  We have all become so incredibly dependent on computers, cell phones, televisions, ATMs, heating and cooling systems, credit card readers, gas pumps, cash registers, refrigerators, hospital equipment etc.  What would life be like if suddenly we couldn’t use any of those things anymore?

At some point there will be a massive power grid failure.  It is just a matter of time.  And as space weather consultant John Kappenman recently told Gizmodo, when it happens power might not be restored for months or even years…

“If you take electricity away, either immediately or within a short period of time, you’ll suffer the failure of all critical infrastructure,” Kappenman said. This includes things like water, sewage treatment, gas stations, banks and hospitals. “One of the concerns that we have is that in the worst case scenarios, we could be looking at weeks, months, maybe even years before restoration of the grid.”

That’s why preppers are taking a longer view. “I have a five year supply of food for employees and family,” a source who requested anonymity told Gizmodo. This individual says he’s rigged up a 12.5 kW solar array in the “remote wilderness,” complete with “power outlets and water spigots about every 50 feet” to support a small fleet of RV trailers for the long haul. Other preppers agree that a multi-year food and water supply is crucial. Some are also stockpiling large quantities of medications (“five year supplies of meds can be obtained from Asia without prescriptions,” one source told Gizmodo).

So how can we get prepared?  The YouTube video that I have posted below was produced by Infowars, and it contains advice from renowned survivalist experts including James Wesley Rawles.  I think that you will find it to be very helpful…

MOAR FREE STUFF IS WHAT WE NEED!

    • Guest

Sadly, the degenerates in this nation would see a power grid failure as the opportunity of a lifetime.

      • victor

Yeah, probably get a few big screens, baby needs some new shoes, get a new cell phone, some video games for when the power comes back, get some new guns. Life will be good. lol
Forgot beer and stop by one of those medical marijuana shops, don’t forget the chips, will be hungry later.

  • GoldenGirl

Thank you, Michael. In addition to the articles you linked and the Infowars video, NatGeo produced a docudrama in 2013 also called American Blackout, which is available on YouTube. In their story, the grid was down for only 10 days, but what ensued was horrible. An EMP is beyond my imagination. Good for Ted Koppel for bringing this information to the masses. The government sure isn’t.

    • John Noyb

The gov’t knows a whole lot more about this than they are letting on. Think about it – what a way to achieve this administration’s ultimate goal of complete control than a supposed emp attack on the power grid which would bring about martial law and decrease the population all at the same time – and no one would really know what happenend.

      • victor

Who really trusts the government anymore?
        I sure don’t.
It’s all about a one world government sometime in life. Only God knows when, and said it would be, to take place.
I trust Him, His Word, and Promises.
Just a matter of how much time.

        • John Noyb

Agreed – I think we’re go’in down some how – especially since we have turned our back on Israel. Zech 12:3. It is just a matter of His time.

          • victor

Some don’t understand, but it will always be the apple of His eye. He has said so.
Even in the millennium reign, where does Jesus rule….It’s all His land.
I don’t think it will be Washington DC, to corrupt..lol
He’d have to throw the money changers out again!!!!

        • SunnyFlaSnotress

I have more faith in the government than god. When nuts approach, I’d rather have a gun than a bible.

          • Mike Smithy

Nevertheless, there are far too many politicians and bureaucrats that would love nothing more that to deprive you of your 2nd amendment rights and leave you defenseless.

        • Trustno1

          I trust no one!

          • Mike Smithy

You are wise. However, it is a lonely position to be in.

      • SunnyFlaSnotress

Well, I’m sure the government takes measures to secure the grid for security reasons.
For what it’s worth, 1 in 7 persons on the planet live without electricity. Before the 1920s, everyone did.

        • Joe Woolf

today your average meal travels over 1000mi to get to your plate…. 100yrs ago, 30% of the population lived on family farms.

          • Trustno1

There ya go, using common sense again!

        • CASTIEL

Try control a army without power grid or telecomunications..when all jet fighters, sam missiles, tanks etc…have electronics……..there is no security measures in a case of EMP attack

          • SunnyFlaSnotress

You forget satellites are solar powered and again generators. People and armies existed long before electricity.

          • CASTIEL

how a jet fighter or a tank or a humvee will start their engines if their electronics are destroyed? you think a satellite is going to fix that?try fighting a army with air force tanks and Apcs helis with communication with the HQ and your army only equipped with a assault rifle in complete disarray…..with no orders or intel about the location of the enemy their strengh..etc dont be a idiot…

          • debtzombie

dude wake up it’s 2015. How long could live without electricity and NO internet for your lame posts?

          • SunnyFlaSnotress

            dude..it’s Snotress.. feminine form

          • Holger Jahndel

But they can not exist WITHOUT Electricity today.
Because even the petrol motors and gas motors of the cars are functioning with electricity. Only the older DIESEL Motors of big military vehicles and of agricultural machines for FARMING AND SHIP Diesel Motors do not.
But even the newer Diesel Motors are functioning with electricity.
In 1857/58 the global EMP Impulse caused by the sun only has destroyed the Telegraphs world wide.
Today it would be much more.
The US Electrical grid for sure!

          • Watchman

Don’t forget that they are intentionally setting themselves and the power grid up for failure. Many recommendations was brought forward on ensuring that the power grid is shielded and even protected from EMP’s and the effects of high intensity solar events but they have not been implemented and they are not interested in doing so. Just look into what a faraday cage is and the effect that an emp has on it.

        • debtzombie

They KNEW how to make food and live without what we have today. The modern home has no cold room with food in it or a fireplace with wood stacked and a garden with livestock….on and on……people freak out when it snows!

    • SunnyFlaSnotress

I’m sure Ted thanks Michael for his obvious plug ::yawn:: I watch so little tv that I had to google Ted to get an image.

      • GoldenGirl

Ted Koppel was probably before your time. :) I’m not sure he’s even on TV anymore.

        • SunnyFlaSnotress

I did recognize him when I saw the pic

    • Holger Jahndel

I suggest you all also read the websites and articles and books and watch the Online Videos of Alec Deacon and about his Darkest Days books and PREPPER stuff.

    5 Truths About Earth’s Magnetic Reversal https://youtu.be/sIayxqk0Ees

  • David

with all the nuclear reactors in America an emp would cause them all to go into meltdown if the power wasn’t restored and soon.

    • SunnyFlaSnotress

      One word: Generators

      • Schteven

Yea, would you drive a fuel truck under these circumstances? It would be suicide.

        • SunnyFlaSnotress

          why do u say that?

          • Schteven

Ever see the movie Mad Max?

          • SunnyFlaSnotress

parts, but i dont remember it well

          • Schteven

Because you would be put down and the fuel stolen for other purposes.

        • John Doe

Agreed. Fuel truck drivers will get home asap to protect the their families in such a scenario. Their not going to risk being hijacked for a paycheck that likely won’t be there.

          • SunnyFlaSnotress

Don’t you think they would get increased security for special trips? ..not to mention military drivers

          • CASTIEL

If you were driving the Fuel truck i would explode the truck with an RPG just for fun.

          • Watchman

No need to put yourself in harms way. Just rig a suitcase nuclear device and remotely detonate it from a safe distance away. Even if Sunny managed to escape the fallout and the effects of an immediate blast vicinity even for a dirty bomb or lower yield nuclear device would take it’s toll even later on that troll.

          • CASTIEL

ahahah…lol detonate a nuclear bomb…but probabily she would crash the truck and kill herself. the roads would be full of cars that simply stop working…..would be very funny see she driving a Fuel truck and hitting other cars to clear the road.

          • CASTIEL

only a military driver in the truck and no one else? who would be that person? Jonh Rambo or Chuck Norris?

          • Watchman

In a scenario whereby there is a resupply convoy it would still be a huge target even if it is well protected. If there is a working car that was turned off prior to the EMP it would be a treasured find. War of the Worlds movie showed such a scenario with an older car versus a newer car that is digital with instrumentation.

The military would also not risk such a resupply convoy unless it is absolutely critical and even then would do an aerial resupply or airlift. A ground convoy would be too dangerous unless there was close quarters support with attack helicopters.

Did I also mention that America’s enemies such as China and Russia would take advantage of an EMP and that convoy would also be a target for them as well? It would be of tactical importance and considered a military asset.

          • CASTIEL

Exactly. Those convoys would be like sitting ducks to the enemy air force….and by the action of the EMP all the US air force would be extinct to fight them

          • debtzombie

Does your mommy know you are on her computer?

        • Watchman

Knowing that troll Sunny she would be riding anything as long as it is approved by her handler who endorses and pays for her trolling habits. This idiotic troll doesn’t realize how generators work and their finite period or that they once they run out of diesel they have to be replenished.

        • SunnyFlaSnotress

The military would tell you what whimpy worry warts you are.

          • Watchman

The military would also tell you that the proper procedure in NATO is to have a convoy protecting even a resupply truck such as a resupply convoy. But yet you didn’t mention that you troll.

How many civilians driving a single fuel truck will have a convoy with escorts for various roles and missions?

          • SunnyFlaSnotress

Why should I elaborate for you.

          • Watchman

Because you can’t that’s why. Now run along with your fellow troll Jazz/Zazz.

          • SunnyFlaSnotress

I can, but it’s a waste of my time.

          • Watchman

You are a waste of life not only time. So you can’t provide a response. Typical proves who is the troll and who is not. You have no understanding of what you are even talking about. Now get back on your meds.

      • Joe Woolf

the problem is once the trucks stop delivering, life as we know it stops…. the trucks can’t get diesel from pumps that don’t have power to pump anything out of the tanks….. at that point, you probably wouldn’t see the police anymore because, they’d be at home with their families…. the guard would get activated and likey nobody would show up for duty….. lol, there would be no good way to activate them anyway.

        • SunnyFlaSnotress

          One word: Generators

          • CASTIEL

how you going to transport diesel to the generators?????you think they work forever?

          • Watchman

Don’t mind Sunny she is still off her meds and having her period. Generators require diesel to operate and if there is no production due to lack of electricity and no logistics she doesn’t understand that.

FYI Sunny generators only last for a finite period and a very short period of time. How long do you think generators in a nuclear power plant last for when there is no cooling and power? I will give you a hint it’s a few days at best.

          • SunnyFlaSnotress

Watchdog.. I threw u a nice stick.. go fetch!

          • Watchman

What’s the matter you can’t respond with proper logic and proper information? Answer the question troll.

          • CASTIEL

She is a ignorant troll….meds have no effect on her….to much stupidity

          • Watchman

Too much stupidity. I provided discussion points and she couldn’t even provide a response other than what a troll normally does. She couldn’t even answer how diesel would be produced in the event of a production shutdown due to lack of electricity or manpower or even due to other conditions or failing equipment. I didn’t even talk about maintaining the production equipment or replacing it when it fails. In such a scenario the equipment would likely lie dormant and unshielded unless steps were taken to ensure Faraday cages for production equipment. Not to mention that the equipment is likely digital and not analog which means it is more susceptible to an EMP due to the way EMI works.

I am glad we agree though and keep up the posting.

          • SunnyFlaSnotress

            One word “Trucks”

          • CASTIEL

where you going to find diesel to the trucks? if you dont have diesel to the generators you dont have also to the trucks……..you are not very smart i can see

          • debtzombie

            Dude, WOW! One word: Clueless

    • K

Some might suggest generators would solve this problem. And if everything worked perfectly, they would. However, in the chaos, that would occur. How do you keep maintenance crews, on sight, for prolonged periods of time? Would they not want to protect their families during the chaos? Even more important. How do you arrange for fuel deliveries to all these plants, every couple of weeks? You might manage these things for a little while. But after the first month. I suspect all of this would break down. So David, I think you are correct. The Government has proven, how little they care about the general public. This is just more of the same.

  • Bob332

The Regime has a plan…it just doesn’t include we the serfs!

    • Steeve Girard

It never did, the consumer world is a fantasy.

  • Priszilla

He’d better spend some money on decentralised renewable energy.
Close 400 military bases in 100 countries bring the boys home and start repairing the roads and sewers.
People in those countries will be busy with their own country and have less inclination to cyber attack anyone.

  • Priszilla

There is a very easy and cheap counter measure. It involves replacing remote login by local login by real people.
Bring back the boys from half the military bases overseas and train them in pushing switches and reading instructions.
Their salary is the same but there are cost savings in logistics. No need to ship American food to Somalia or some carrier group.

But well, who would really want that?

  • Priszilla

My bicycle and my water pump work without electricity. So do most of my tools and maps.
In England people start stealing lead cladding from church and school roofs. Lead protects against radioactivity.
For protection against EMP see tempest, which falls under ITAR.

    • alan

Lead cladding will not stop 10 million Muslims invading Europe. Some body really hates Europe. lets see who has been bombing countries there for 15 years? Oh yea the US.

      • Steeve Girard

I love the way Mother Nature works. If you do something, you get it back in equal amount to yourself. Also what climbs a hill, must eventually come down the hill.
        LOL!

      • Priszilla

Winter is coming. Flu and cold. Cramped living conditions won’t help much. Winter in Germany can be up to 25 degrees below zero.
Stay indoors and flu and mould will get you. Stay out and you freeze.
And even if it’s just raining all day at near zero, people will hate it after a few months.
Germany in Winter is practically dead. Shops close at 6pm. City centre empty. No shopping on Sundays at all.

  • alan

One of many things that could go wrong.
The people that are responsible for looting the country need an out. Its like the thieves that rob a house then set it on fire to cover their tracks. Of course Putin did it.

  • chilller

The simple fact the gubermint doesn’t want to talk about it is a sign…a bad sign. Whenever they clam up…you know right away you’ve hit a nerve.

  • grumpyhillbilly

If a cyber attack happens it will likely be an insider one with a little help from Silicon Valley and the Nsa. The why doesn’t really matter to me since all roads lead to a scary Orwellian totalitarian state. What amuses me is the grid is crumbling from epa rules, lack of reinvestment into the actual grid, and very few full-time linemen. Nature might just beat our masters to the punch.

  • Barry H

    Michael,

While I am grateful for Alex Jones and his energetic anti-government Info Wars site, most of the stuff that comes out of it is borderline fear mongering. While I generally agree with their position, I usually don’t give Info Wars much more than a glance. I was actually saddened to see Peter Schiff get a spot on Info Wars because I feel it will hurt his credibility.

    • Have you listened to Craig B Hulet?

      • JD

No, share a link with some of his stuff. What’s he about?

    • FU JD

      “JD” IS A GOVT TROLL.

  • Black

So now I know another guy whose food I’m gonna steal. Thanks for the tip

    • Joe Woolf

You may get away with that for a while…. then somebody will pop your grape.

      • Black

hope they have more guns than me

        • Daddyotis

Doesn’t matter, Friend. If your plan is to steal preps from others when TSHTF, you WILL be put down … and likely quickly. You should be careful pressing this dumb a s s attitude, as it’s not the sort of thing that’s going to keep you safe. Nobody cares how many guns you own, and you’ve likely never trained seriously with them…so it’s pretty much a certainty you’ll be wormfood very shortly after TSHTF

        • Joe Woolf

if someone like you ran down my street ( which is a dead end ) I can assure you that you’d have a popped grape.

LOL, if you’re thinking that your guns are something then, I’m pretty sure you don’t know how to use one.

I won’t brag on here much but, I’ve been to camp perry and, I’ve made the president’s 100 with service rifle….. I doubt you have….. my hobby is to shoot stuff far away with a 375 CheyTac and can get first shot hits at over a mile….. again, I think you’d be holding your gat sideways.

So, I don’t play golf…. I shoot rifles and hand load custom ammo for them.

Good luck with your plan… you’ll need it.

  • Joe Woolf

Not sure it will help in the worst case scenerio but, I put up a pretty large solar panel array out at my little house in the country.

I’m grid tied but, have about 2000 lbs of battery backup…. when we lose power in a storm, where I’m at… it takes a while to get power restored…. now, I never lose power at all. I could shut of the grid with a flip of a switch and keep going for years and never lose my freezers, lights or anything else. I wouldn’t be running my main AC but, I have window units that would keep going and never lose a beat.

In an EMP attack, the MOST, at risk are the major power lines…. they’re out there like an antenna to catch all the inductance coming from an EMP etc…. it is more likely that that is what goes ( which is obviously bad )… those transformers are hand wound and can take 2yrs to produce one of them.

It’s somewhat less likely that your car or personal electronics will be affected to the extent that the actual grid is affected…..

Not sure how solar panels are affected… not as much because I have massive surge protectors coming from the lines and panels but, if it ever happens, I guess I’ll find out.

It was an expensive solution but honestly, it will pay for itself in pretty short order…. it’s gotten a lot cheaper than it used to be after the tax credits etc…. ( my taxable income after refund was only 5000 dollars last year ) LOL

  • Illini Warrior

There’s more celebrity type “closet preppers” than you’d figure ….

Ted Koppel didn’t just suddenly come to this revelation about the grid failure …. he’s an intelligent & well informed individual …. he’s seen first hand how civilization can crumble ….

If you want a forewarning of the crap hitting that proverbial fan? …. watch the celebs swarm for their Idaho and Montana “ski remotes” ….

The conservative debate last night-very close to my work place BTW, they said that the wages of Americans are too high. You conservatives have to realize how hard you are going down in 2016. Talk about a bunch of out of touch fools…

I urge you all to read the new book called America Acendent by Steven Greenberg where he nicely lays out how the GOP is in their death spiral and will never recover.

One should realize that the Federal Reserve is the primary culprit of our economic woes, a Rothschild cartel that is neither federal nor are there any reserves. In fact, most members of the Fed are foreigners who have no allegiance to America. Also, prices don’t go up, the value of the dollar declines, as the famous French philosopher Voltaire noted: “Paper money will always return to it’s intrinsic value … zero!” and the level of corruption in the system makes Bernie Madoff look like a petty thief.

Probably the most damaging aspect when it comes to wages is the massive intervention of government into the private sector. Government destroys everything it gets its hands on … just take a look at the VA, the IRS, Social Security [sic] or a century of failed foreign policy transforming this country into the greatest warmongering nation in human history.

But from an Economics 101 viewpoint, you should understand that whenever employers are forced to increase it’s minimum wage, employees are laid off, consumer product prices increase, or both if the business is to continue. It is employer who invests and assumes all the business risks which are huge, not the employee, and the minimum wage laws have actually become a hidden tax on everyone.

The 50% dropout/flunk rates in our public school system (socialist indoctrination centers) is why so many are stuck in the minimum wage quagmire to begin with … and lo and behold, we find another government run institution!

As to the debate last night, I too watched. Bobby Jindal and Rand Paul were the only ones in touch with reality. You should know I belong to no political party having ripped up my Republican Voter card when the GOP nominated Romney. The last “General” election I voted in was back in 2000 when I made the mistake with Bush, though I had voted for Alan Keyes in the Primary. So now I’m sort of sitting back and watching America burn from within as I’ve learned that voting for the lesser of two evils is still evil, so why waste my time? Read Phillip Marshall’s “The Big Bamboozle” to get a taste of just how evil.

there is no evidence to back up the increase in min wage hurting business. If you look at the cities that did raise the min wage business is booming

        • RedPillPlease

LOL! Obviously, you’ve never run a business before. You might want to look at those “business booming cities” and check their budget deficits. America is bankrupt and the ONLY reason we have stayed afloat is because our dollar is tied to oil and we have a printing press.

Our National Debt is $19 Trillion. You could spend $20 million every single day for 2000 years and not reach that amount. Back in February of 2010 when our debt was half of what it is today, a group of MIT mathematicians proved that we could NEVER pay it off. We spend $45 Billion every month just on the interest. Sadly, some people just don’t get it!

The diners and restaurants in Seattle Washington is already experiencing closures and bankruptcies because of the bump in minimum wage. Who would ever pay 10 – 15 for burger–fries–and a Coke. Not me. The End…

Maybe if we tell Obama 100 million plus dead in a year or two from starvation and disease might affect his Precious Legacy he can tell Congress to cough up the funds needed to protect the Grid. But that’s not as important as making Bathrooms co-ed and keeping streets safe for thugs…..

What happens during an EMP: imagine a dust storm (this is the best metaphor for it); see how it spreads in all directions, travels, and engulfs wide areas. In an EMP, the storm is an invisible cloud of static magnetized electricity. Travels via it’s physics to act as the wind in the dust storm metaphor, at thousands of miles per second.

What happens is the electric magnetism damages the microscopic switches embedded in microchips. Unlike older electrical diodes, capacitors, etc; microchips have these electronic parts microscopically made in semi-conductors using the same means as chemical photographic development. A thin silicone wafer is coated with chemicals and a camera using ultraviolet light snaps an image of the circuit pathways, then the wafer goes in an acid bath which washes off the non-exposed chemicals with some of the silicone to create channels. Other chemicals are used to alter the atomic makeup of the silicone into conductors, diodes, potentiometers, transformers, etc. A final coating of metal atoms finishes the circuitry. An EMP acts on the metals in circuit boards and throws them in multiple directions – ruining the circuit board.

Covering your electronic parts with a grounded cage or a metal container with a layer of thick cloth between the parts and the metal will protect the circuit boards no matter the size of the EMP. This is as simple as placing a smartphone in some socks and wrapping with aluminum foil.

Creating your own power is easy as well. In previous posts, I mention how to build a 12v generator with a lawn mower motor, car alternator, and some other bits. Also covered building batteries.

Firewalls prevent cyber attacks. Low paid disgruntled employees is another question.

    • Donald Wilson

Read his book and do your own research.

  • Donald Wilson

Anyone who thinks that firewalls etc…are living in fantasy land. As of today the Russians and the Chinese have the capability to lay waste to the US electrical grid. Just take look at what was done to the Iranians cetntrifuges. The Stuxnet virus infiltrated all those so called firewalls and ultimately devastated those centrifuges. Read Ted Koppels book before making any hasty remarks. It’s not if but WHEN this sort of event will take place. The End…

Michael, you forgot one very critical area of infrastructure that would be catastrophic if damaged by an EMP – Nuclear Reactors. One expert (don’t ask me who, because I don’t remember) has said that an EMP from the sun would take down the grid by destroying primarily the transformers, but a weapon EMP would actually destroy the wiring of electrical equipment. In other words, with a sun EMP a nuclear reactor can continue to be cooled down with a generator and years worth of fuel (until the grid is repaired). But with a nuclear weapon EMP the electrical components of the cooling system in a nuclear reactor would be fried and it won’t matter if they can get power to the system – the cooling system itself won’t work, leading to melt down. He said that the strength of the EMP to do damage will be determined by the proximity to the EMP. As previous enemies have figured out, maximum damage can be caused by targeting NYC. There are 2 nuclear power plants near NYC (one in Tom’s River, NJ and the other being Indian Point). I can grasp the catastrophe of being without water and electricity – the chaos and deaths it would cause in major cities. I can’t fathom the ecological disaster if an EMP caused catastrophic meltdown of one or two or more nuclear reactors. And I would like to think that the powers that be are working furiously to build nuclear reactor faraday cages, but costly preparation for catastrophe that has not yet occurred would be out of character for the powers that be. Excuse me, but I have to stick my head back in the sand so I can sleep tonight.

    • Philosopher2

Most nuclear reactors have 7 days of fuel to keep the back-up generators running. If the back-up generators fail that means the 400-plus generators in the US could melt down, and melt down quickly. If Jeh Johnson does not realize that keeping those reactors running after an EMP attack is critical infrastructure then he has no clue and Homeland Security is nothing but a farce and a joke.

The Emergency Preparedness Statutes are blank when it comes to letting Joe Blow and his family know what to do in an emergency. The statutes are geared toward those in government. For the last year I’ve been trying to move people on the idea that we must prepare in order to overcome a disaster.
No takers so far. What do you think will happen? If hurricane Sandy is any indication, where going to have plenty of moaners, and no doers.

    • Philosopher2

The reason I am prep is due to Hurricane Katrina. But Sandy was a good reminder, to keep on.

  • Patriot Alice

Without a lot of gas stored, your generators will be good for a week maybe.

    • Philosopher2

There is an excellent book called “Alcohol can be a Gas” that is available used and in hard-copy format. I recommend that book for everyone. People would be surprised at what they can use to make fuel with a small still.

  • Philosopher2

Thank you for the article. The big wake up call for me was Hurricane Katrina. It looks like more people are waking up to how vulnerable the US is at the present time. I am not suprised the Jeh Johnson shrugged. The folks that run Pike’s Peak started fixing it up again about a year ago. My conclusion was they realized that an EMP would devestate the US. Smart.

Sounds similar to Ron Paul (a big fan). Thanks for the link, I’ll check it out.
