The Dow Plunges 372 Points As Trump Impeachment Talk Reaches A Fever Pitch On Capitol Hill

Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on Google+Share on LinkedInShare on StumbleUponEmail this to someone

The wolves are circling, and members of Congress from both political parties are now openly talking about impeaching President Trump.  On Wednesday, speculation of a looming Trump impeachment sent stocks plunging.  The Dow was down 372 points, and the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq both experienced their largest declines in eight months.  This downturn was sparked by a New York Times report that said that a memo that FBI Director James Comey wrote in February stated that Trump requested that Comey “end the investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn”.  Democrats and Republicans are both jumping on this memo as potential evidence of “obstruction of justice”, but as I will explain below, even if everything that Comey is saying is true there is no evidence of obstruction of justice in this case.  However, perception is often more important than reality, and at this moment Wall Street and many of Trump’s fellow Republicans in Washington believe that the Trump administration is coming apart at the seams.  After the events of this week, it is clearer than ever that it is imperative that we get Trump some friends in Congress in 2018.

Following Trump’s surprise election victory in November, stocks surged as investors anticipated the implementation of a robust pro-business agenda.

But now that the Trump administration is deeply embroiled in controversy, many fear that Trump’s pro-business agenda will never become a reality

“A week ago, we were talking about the agenda grinding to a halt,” the Republican said. “Now, the train is going down the hill backwards.”

And even before Wednesday’s revelation about Comey’s memo, some top Republican leaders were already disavowing Trump’s agenda.  For example, just check out what Bloomberg is reporting about Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell…

Earlier Tuesday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he’s prepared to block Trump on many of his proposed budget cuts and won’t support major tax cuts that add to the deficit. Nor would he commit to building Trump’s border wall.

The financial markets had already “priced in” big tax cuts, reduced regulations and a massive increase in infrastructure spending.

If the markets believe that none of those things are going to happen now, that is likely to result in a significant downturn for stocks.

Of course the Democrats are just thrilled by these latest developments.  U.S. Representative Jim Himes told MSNBC that the Republican agenda is now “lying in ruins on the floor of this building”

Speaking earlier on Wednesday, Rep. Jim Himes (D-Conn.), a member of the House intelligence committee, said the Republican legislative agenda “is lying in ruins on the floor of this building.”

“It was tenuous when they got through their so-called health care bill in the House.  You can still see blood on the floor here for what it cost them to get that through the House,” Himes told MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” in an interview from the U.S. Capitol.

“Now, you know, things like tax reform , which is, you know, very, very difficult in the best of times — with that cloud, with this cloud, hanging over this building, that legislative agenda is all but gone.”

Previously, I have warned about the “gangster culture” in Washington D.C., and the truth is that the “Deep State” has been out to get Trump since the moment he was elected.

There are thousands upon thousands of laws that apply to the presidency, and the jackals among the establishment have been waiting for Trump to trip up just a little bit so that they can try to take him down for good.

And things are starting to move very quickly now.

Within hours of the revelation about the Comey memo, Democratic Representative Al Green called for Trump to be impeached from the House floor: “This is about what I believe. And this is where I stand. I will not be moved. The president must be impeached.”

It isn’t much of a surprise to see this sort of rush to judgment from the Democrats, but the speed at which Republicans are turning on Trump is more than just a little bit alarming…

-Senator John McCain raised the specter of impeachment when he told the press that the crisis surrounding Trump has reached “Watergate size and scale”.

-McCain’s partner in crime, Senator Lindsey Graham, released a statement that said he “will follow the facts — wherever they may lead”.  Graham has always been one of Trump’s biggest critics, and he clearly is ready to move forward with impeachment.

-According to the Hill, U.S. Rep. Justin Amash is saying that if Comey’s memo is true “it would merit impeachment”.

-Commenting on Trump’s troubles, U.S. Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-Fla.) told reporters that obstruction of justice “has been considered an impeachable offense”.

But what none of them understand is that Trump has not committed any crime.

As a former lawyer with two law degrees (a JD and an LLM), it is my opinion that even if everything in Comey’s memo is true (and that is a big if), it still would not mean that President Trump is guilty of obstruction of justice.

And I am far from alone in this regard.  Someone that agrees with me is ultra-liberal George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley

A good place to start would be with the federal law, specifically 18 U.S.C. 1503. The criminal code demands more than what Comey reportedly describes in his memo. There are dozens of different variations of obstruction charges ranging from threatening witnesses to influencing jurors. None would fit this case. That leaves the omnibus provision on attempts to interfere with the “due administration of justice.”

However, that still leaves the need to show that the effort was to influence “corruptly” when Trump could say that he did little but express concern for a longtime associate. The term “corruptly” is actually defined differently under the various obstruction provisions, but it often involves a showing that someone acted “with the intent to secure an unlawful benefit for oneself or another.” Encouraging leniency or advocating for an associate is improper but not necessarily seeking an unlawful benefit for him.

Then there is the question of corruptly influencing what? There is no indication of a grand jury proceeding at the time of the Valentine’s Day meeting between Trump and Comey. Obstruction cases generally are built around judicial proceedings — not Oval Office meetings.

You can’t charge someone with a crime just because you don’t like that person.

We are not supposed to be a nation that conducts witch hunts.  The law is supposed to be applied equally to all of our citizens, and that includes the president of the United States.

I know that the left and the establishment Republicans that hate Trump would love to use the law as a weapon to remove Trump from office, but the truth is that there is no evidence that Trump has done anything wrong.

And if the law was actually applied objectively in our land, it is quite likely that Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton would all be in very hot water about now.  The following comes from Mike Adams of Natural News

Keep in mind that these same discredited media outlets gave Obama a pass when he laundered $1.7 billion in cash and delivered it to Iran on a military cargo plane.

They are the same fake news media that looked the other way when Bill Clinton met with Loretta Lynch on the tarmac in a private meeting to pressure Lynch to back off any potential criminal investigation of Hillary Clinton’s long list of crimes.

They are the same anti-American media that said nothing when Hillary Clinton cheated during the presidential debates by receiving the debate questions in advance from CNN. (She also pre-sold her anticipated presidency by collecting tens of millions of dollars in “donations” and “speaking fees” from foreign interests.)

They are the same media that stood silent when former President Obama weaponized the IRS to suppress the speech of conservative non-profits. Similarly, nobody in the media seems to be alarmed at all that Obama abused the state surveillance apparatus to spy on his political opponents such as Rand Paul.

For much more on the crimes of the Clintons in particular, I would commend a book by Edward Klein entitled “Guilty as Sin: Uncovering New Evidence of Corruption and How Hillary Clinton and the Democrats Derailed the FBI Investigation”.  The fact that neither of the Clintons have ever been to prison says a lot about the state of criminal justice in America today.

It is literally going to take a miracle for Trump to survive the next couple of years.  If he can do that, we can definitely greatly strengthen his hand by sending hordes of Trump supporters to D.C. during the mid-term elections in 2018.

If the impeachment process moves forward, there are a whole lot of Republicans that would gleefully plunge knives into Trump’s back.  So Trump needs to be very careful, because he doesn’t have a lot of true friends in Congress at this point.

This is why we can no longer vote for someone just because they carry the label of “Republican”.  What we really need is a conservative revolution in this country, and my hope is that we can start a movement that will turn Washington D.C. completely upside down.

Another thing Trump has against him is his age. At 70 years of age, Trump is the oldest man ever elected to the office of U.S. president. They may just wear him out to the point that he steps down before he finishes his first term. Either that or his health will fail and prevent him from finishing his term.

If it were not for the local mountain lion getting brave and walking through my front yard lately, I wouldn’t have much to be worried about. Two years ago he started using my permanent deer stand as a hang out.
He came through last night, and stayed; as I was walking out to the garden this morning, he jumped up out of the brush and high tailed it into the deep woods.

You are exactly right SoCal. 1000%. If you don’t have friends in congress you cannot get anything done.

While the author of said blog is right the trump needs friends in 2018, his personality is too volatile to keep said friends because he turns on people at the drop of a hat.

I think he has some type of personality disorder. Probably stemming from his childhood that was really bad.

Back to clarion call for people to run in 2018. Fat chance getting elected if you run against an incumbent. Fat chance of getting the republican or democrat nomination if you are a nobody. Fat chance of anyone even caring about the fact that you are running if you don’t have the big name as Ron Paul and Rand Paul did and actually win.

People please stop giving money to these candidates. You are only making yourselves poorer. Not to mention what exactly did Ron Paul do with all that money he raised to just send a message and educate people (remember he said he wasn’t running for president to win).

Gold performs well across differing macroeconomic environments. Gold is the classic inflation hedge, but it has performed well in periods of deflation —1930s, disinflation —2000s, and stagflation—1970s as well.

          • socalbeachdude

Gold performed just fine when it stayed right around $20 per ounce from 1793 up until 1933 but then started to get inflated at $35 per ounce. The US government stabilized and set the official US government price of gold at $42.42 per ounce in 1971 and has never changed it from that right up through present which is how the US Treasury values the around 8,200 metric tonnes of gold it owns for a total aggregate value of right around $11 billion.

          • PocoPete

The federal government may have leased significant portions of its gold reserves in the past two decades, because the U.S. exported 5,500 tons during that time period even though there were only about 1,000 surplus tons available for export. The U.S. has exported vastly more gold than it has imported, and that gold had to come from somewhere. This leaves gold-leasing from the Fed as the most likely source for all that gold, and it is such a large amount that there is no possible source on the face of the planet where such an amount could be purchased.

          • socalbeachdude

There is no “missing gold” or “leased gold” at all and the US government owns about 8,200 metric tonnes of gold for which the US Treasury issues monthly reports and the latest monthly report (in which the gold is valued at the official price of $42.42 per ounce) is at:

            http://www.fiscal.treasury.gov/fsreports/rpt/goldRpt/current_report.htm

The Federal Reserve owns very little gold of its own and has no interest in gold for anything other than for vault decoration with other country’s gold which it stores in a custodial capacity.

          • PocoPete

Well of course the government is not going to admit to leasing any of its gold reserves. That would defeat the whole purpose of doing it, which is to suppress the price of gold. There is overwhelming evidence that the amount of US gold reserves is much less than what is officially claimed by the government.

          • socalbeachdude

Absolutely false. There is no evidence whatsoever to indicate that the US Treasury holds less than its 8,200 or so metric tonnes of gold and every single month it pushes a PRECISE REPORT AT THE LINK I PROVIDED ABOVE as to its actual gold holdings. Your assertions to the contrary are as bogus as a $3 Euro.

Gold is a PREPOSTEROUS AND ABSURDLY OVERPRICED fungible little niche commodity and is headed towards and to its mean of $456 per ounce and then much lower.

At any price above $456 per ounce gold is preposterously overvalued and that speculative froth will rapidly be blown off the top.

THE ISSUE IS THE PROPER PRICE OF GOLD.

An array of reasonable historical metrics can be used to establish the proper price of gold, including:

            1) Its historical mean which would put gold right around $456 per ounce

            2) Its 16:1 historical ratio against silver which would put gold right around $276.48 per ounce based on silver being around $16.60 per ounce

            3) Its inflation adjusted price today from its last stable historical price of $35 per ounce in 1971 which would put gold right around $386 per ounce.

            4) Its current official US government price of $42.22 per ounce which is how the approximately 8200 metric tonnes of US government gold are valued:

            http://www.fiscal.treasury.gov/fsreports/rpt/goldRpt/current_report.htm

          • PocoPete

The “official US government price of $42.22” is only used to simplify book keeping purposes. The US government never sells gold for that price and of course it could never buy gold at that price.

          • socalbeachdude

The $42.42 per ounce price of gold used by the US government is the OFFICIAL US GOVERNMENT PRICE OF GOLD and results in a value of only around $11 billion for its entire around 8,200 metric tonnes of gold owned by the US government.

Even at current absurdly preposterous spot prices of gold of around $1260 per ounce the entire 8,200 or so metric tonnes of gold owned by the US government is WORTH LESS THAN $350 BILLION which is equivalent to about 3 months worth of the current US government annual deficit.

          • PocoPete

Gold’s “16:1 historical ratio against silver which would put gold right around $276.48 per ounce based on silver being around $16.60 per ounce”. Since gold is the more prominent monetary metal, the 16:1 ratio is generally used to determine the forecasted price of silver, not the other way around. So dividing the price of gold at $1257.63 by 16 yields a price of silver of $78.60 per ounce.

          • socalbeachdude

There is a MASSIVE OVERSUPPLY OF SILVER which is why the price of silver is in the $16 to $17 range these days and is headed to below its mean of $8 per ounce which will happen very rapidly as commodity prices continue to plummet for the metals. At $8 per ounce for silver, that would put the proper price of gold at around $128 per ounce based on the historical 16:1 relationship between the price of gold to silver.

          • PocoPete

The US FED has balked at any question of an independent, professional and in-depth audit of the actual gold reserves for over a half century. The yearly so called “audits” consist of merely checking the seals on the vaults and not actually examining the gold bars. A request made a few years ago by the Bundesbank that just 250 tons of their bullion held in “safekeeping” by the USA be returned to Frankfurt resulted in Bernanke replying that the repatriation would require 15 years. A year later Germany had received only 5 tons.

Central banks routinely lease or lend out gold. But current reporting guidelines don’t require them to distinguish between gold owned outright and gold swapped with another party. Instead, the U.S. Treasury simply states its holdings as “gold (including gold deposits and gold swapped).” Not only could all the gold be on loan, but banks could also be “re-loaning” that very same gold, thereby creating a “paper pyramid of gold.” The process is known as “rehypothecation,” and it’s exactly what happened during the mortgage crisis with collateralized debt obligations.

This is effectively an admission that the FED has little if any gold whatsoever except possibly the long rows of gold plated tungsten bars that might be displayed to the media.

          • socalbeachdude

The US Federal Reserve has NOTHING WHATSOEVER to do with the US government gold which is entirely owned and controlled and stored by the US Treasury which consists of around 8,200 metric tonnes for which the US Treasury issues a monthly report as to the exact amounts of gold each and every month and the latest report is at:

            http://www.fiscal.treasury.gov/fsreports/rpt/goldRpt/current_report.htm

The Federal Reserve itself own almost no gold at all and has no interest in gold at all but acts as a CUSTODIAN FOR VAULT STORE OF GOLD for other countries including Germany at the New York Federal Reserve Branch.

Germany had 1500 metric tones of their around 4400 metric tonnes of gold stored at the Federal Reserve New York Branch. They requested the return of 300 metric tonnes of gold from the Federal Reserve and are keeping the other 1200 metric tonnes on storage at the Federal Reserve New York Bank and the transfer of the 300 metric tonnes was completed WAY AHEAD OF SCHEDULE.

Germany brings back 300 tons of gold it had been keeping in an underground vault in New York since the Cold War

Germany has completed an effort to bring home 300 metric tons of gold stashed in the United States, part of a plan to repatriate gold bars kept abroad during the Cold War.

The German central bank said it brought 111 tons of gold back from the Federal Reserve in New York last year, concluding in September – the last of 300 tons slated for return.

The gold was earned by West Germany from trade surpluses in the 1950s and 1960s, but was never moved out of the United States due to fear of invasion by the Soviet Union.

In 2013 Germany launched the transfer to Frankfurt of 300 tons of gold from New York and 374 tons from Paris.

The bank also repatriated 105 tons of gold from Paris last year, but still has another 91 tons to return from the French capital, and said it plans to bring them back in 2017.

Once the transfers are completed, Frankfurt will hold half of Germany’s 3,378 tons of reserve gold, with the rest in New York and London.

‘The transfers were carried out without any disruptions or irregularities,’ said Carl-Ludwig Thiele, board member of the central bank, called Bundesbank.

Thiele said there would not be any further transfers and Donald Trump’s presidency didn’t change the situation.

‘We have a trusting relationship with the Fed,’ he said.

As of December 31 last year, there were 1,236 tons of German gold in New York – 36.6 percent of the total.

The bank has not released any details as to how it transported the gold home.

The original plan was for the transfers to be completed by 2020, but the bank brought forward the transfers.

            http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4214894/Germany-brings-300-tons-gold-New-York.html

          • PocoPete

Of course the gold is owned by the US government. The physical custodianship of the United State’s gold may be of technical interest but does not effect its ultimate control.

See Wikipedia, “A gold reserve is the gold held by a national central bank, intended as a store of value and as a guarantee to redeem promises to pay depositors, note holders, or trading peers, or to secure a currency.” The Federal Reserve is the central bank of the US.

The Federal Reserve possesses gold certificates for the gold held at the United States Bullion Depository at Fort Knox. To say that the Fed has “has NOTHING WHATSOEVER to do with the US government gold” is disingenuous at best.

Any secret gold swaps or gold leasing agreements with foreign central banks would be done by the Federal Reserve. The evidence that the Fed and other central banks are manipulating the gold price is overwhelming.

          • socalbeachdude

Yes, indeed the US government gold is OWNED AND CONTROLLED EXCLUSIVELY BY THE US TREASURY, and the Federal Reserve has nothing whatsoever to do with that US government gold at all and has ZERO CONTROL as to the US government gold which is under the exclusive control of the US Treasury.

Your assertion that the Federal Reserve “possesses gold certificates” for any of that gold is TOTALLY FALSE and absolutely laughable.

The Federal Reserve owns very little gold and what they do own in the way of gold is clearly disclosed on their annual financial statements.

Only about 4600 metric tonnes of the US government’s around 8200 metric tonnes of gold is stored at the US Mint Bullion Depository in Fort Knox, Kentucky which is across the street from the army based known as Fort Knox. The rest of it is stored at the US Mint facilities in West Point (NY), San Francisco, Philadelphia, and Denver amo0ng a few other US Mint facilities in the US. Its total value is less than $350 billion even at current absurdly elevated spot market prices of around $1260 per ounce for gold.

There are no “gold swaps” of any kind related to the Federal Reserve which couldn’t give the slightest bit of a hoot as to the US government gold which it has NOTHING WHATSOEVER to do with.

Gold reached a manic speculative high in January 1980 of $850 and then plummeted $600 per ounce from 1980 u8p until late 2001 which was moire than a 70% plunge in the price of the stuff over a 22 year period.

Then it started rising from $250 an ounce in 2001 to $1927 per ounce over the 10 year period up until September 05, 2011 and since then over the past 6 year period has PLUMMETED 35% from its absurdly and laughable manic speculative high and is now on its way to9 reverting to its mean of $456 per ounce and then headed lower to perhaps as low as $232 per ounce.

Gold Demand Trends First Quarter 2017 – World Gold Council

Global gold demand in Q1 2017 was 1,034.5t, 18% below the exceptional Q1 2016, which was the strongest ever first quarter. Solid inflows into ETFs were nevertheless a fraction of last year’s near-record inflows, and slower central bank demand also contributed to the year-on-year drop. Bar and coin investment, however, was healthy at 289.8t (+9% yoy), while demand firmed slightly in both the jewellery and technology sectors.

PIERS MORGAN: If you don’t admit you need help, Mr President, and hire some people fast who actually know what they are doing you are going to blunder your way straight into impeachment

This has been the worst week of Donald Trump’s presidency. Trump will doubtless be hurling blame left, right and center for all the negative headlines in the past few days.I’m afraid he only has himself to blame after a series of spectacular missteps that have dragged him to a very dangerous precipice. His staff, like Spicer and Conway, who are seen here with the President today, are openly mocked and like headless chickens unable to control the mayhem.

Trump calls McMaster ‘a pain’ – as the general is used by the White House to defend the president’s blabbing of classified info to the Russians

TRUMP CREATES UTTER CHAOS, THEN WHINES…

‘No politician in history has been treated worse’: Trump lashes out at his critics in commencement speech to Coast Guard recruits after coming under fire for leaking intelligence and interfering with a FBI investigation

President Donald Trump turned a Coast Guard commencement into a media-bashing exercise on Wednesday as he returned fire on news outlets accusing him of sharing classified information and interfering in an FBI investigation. ‘No politician in history, and I say this with great surety, has been treated worse or more unfairly,’ Trump protested. ‘You can’t let them get you down.

You can’t let the critics and the naysayers get in the way of your dreams,’ the president said. He added: ‘I guess that’s why I won.’ He then boasted about his border wall, the ‘great healthcare’ bill his party is working on and the large tax cuts he’s been promising, having earlier bragged that aircraft carriers would be built ‘under budget and ahead of schedule’ in his administration.

Is Trump turning on Jared? ‘Sour and dark’ president has unleashed his fury on his White House staff – including his son-in law – following Russia revelations

As news broke of reports that President Donald Trump revealed highly classified information to Russian officials last week during a meeting in the West Wing, White House aides were ‘hiding in offices’ to avoid speaking to the press.

The President is said to have become ‘sour and dark’ and has turned against his staff, including son-in-law Jared Kushner.

The White House’s communications team attempted to drown out shouting with a blaring television after reporters claimed to hear yelling coming from a room that Spicer, Steve Bannon and Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders were in during the chaotic night.

Reporters also had a surprise encounter with Trump’s top national security adviser, HR McMaster, who told them that the West Wing was the ‘last place in the world I wanted to be’.

Love it! Wife and I moved ourselves and teenager here 5 years ago with the specific intent of finding a place where some degree of freedom remains (could change if the Dems win back control, due to illegal immigration, legal immigration, and California psychos migrating). So proud of her for being willing to do so. We have really grown to love the state, and while it is not as naturally beautiful as some others at first glance, once you’ve spent some time in Hill Country, you realize that Tanya definitely had things figured out.

Can you imagine just picking up and moving to find a place where more freedom reigns and there is still some degree of happiness and men can be men and girls be girls? But we see even that as possibly changing now, with the coup against Trump, etc. Checking out foreign nations at this point. We will see. Our child deserves a future that is free, and Heritage Foundation now lists, I believe, 18 nations as being more “Lands of the Free, Home of the Brave” than the U.S.

          Time will tell.

  • mtntrek3

I’m sure there will be ones that will be after me w/pitchforks after saying this…. but Trump is nuts.

  • JC Teecher

    Impeachment? For what?
    There is no there…there.
Trump has not interfered with any criminal investigation…because there isn’t one.
All the FBI/Comey commie was doing was “gathering” information to find “if” there were any “facts” to go on, for an eventual charge of illegal activity.

Even if Trump came out and said, to Comey…”I hope you can end this and find that Flynn wasn’t guilty of anything”; that is not a crime, or intrusion into a fact finding mission by the FBI. It would not be considered an “obstruction” by law, even if there was an ongoing criminal investigation going on.
WHY? Because the word “hope” is not the same as saying “stop it now”.

    • PocoPete

      Good point!

Articles of Impeachment for Donald J. Trump

Historically, impeachment articles have focused on broad violations of constitutional duty and specific discrete acts like clashing with Congress over Reconstruction, commanding the Watergate break-in, or testimonial perjury. In Trump’s case, there is ample evidence for both the more general violations and the more specific abuses, much of them admitted by the president through his own indelicate tweets (including admissions Tuesday morning regarding the passing of classified information to the Russians).

So what might an impeachment bill against President Trump include?

The Andrew Johnson, Richard Nixon, and Bill Clinton impeachment bills used common language to put their specific violations in context. Any Trump articles of impeachment should also include such language at the start of each article:

In his conduct while president of the United States, Donald J. Trump, in violation of his constitutional oath faithfully to execute the office of president of the United States and, to the best of his ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States, and in violation of his constitutional duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed, has engaged in conduct that resulted in misuse and abuse of his high office:

Beyond this preamble, the Trump impeachment bill might include, but not be limited to, the following articles…

  • mtntrek3

Let’s see if this goes through……Sounds like there is to be a special council set up to investigate Trump. We need to find out yes or no on the comment about Flynn to Comey/whether it amounts to a crime…. and whether or not there was cooperation between Trump and Russia during the election.

The “New” Financial Weapons of Mass Destruction

According to Goldman, a mere 10 stocks — 10 stocks — account for almost half the S&P’s gains for the year.

    Forty-six percent, to be precise.

This year’s bull’s-eye stocks are the so-called FAANGs — Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix and Google.

Rounding out the top 10 are Visa… Philip Morris… Oracle… Home Depot… and Broadcom.

Most other stocks are zeroes — or worse.

    David Stockman in yesterday’s reckoning:

“During the last 70 days, the FAANGs have gained $260 billion in value, while the other 495 companies in the S&P 500 have lost an identical amount… Other than the five FAANG stocks, the market has been silently collapsing since March 1.”

Meanwhile, recent data from Fundstrat Global Advisors reveal that just 40 stocks out of 500 — 8%, that is — account for some 85% of the S&P’s gains this year.

Here’s why stocks could rally if Trump heads for the exit

The Dow and S&P are trudging toward ending with losses for the week, as “Trump to Comey: You’re fired!” remains the news story that keeps on giving.

The sad-sack retail sector is still getting attention as well. Fresh sales data and J.C. Penney’s results are hitting in the wake of Macy’s Monty Python-esque “We’re not dead” remark.

President Donald Trump is showing no signs that he will resign as the FBI firing controversy rages on, even if Democrats are dreaming of impeachment. Nonetheless, stock pundits are talking about how the market might react to such a move.

“What would U.S. stocks do if President Trump suddenly resigned? Based on recent price action, the answer is clear: Rally 3-5%, at least, over a day or two,” says Convergex’s Nick Colas for our call of the day.

The last time this happened the markets crashed…

A few days ago Charles Schwab, the investment brokerage firm, announced that the number of new brokerage accounts soared 44% during the first quarter of 2017.

More specifically, Schwab stated that individual investors are opening up stock trading accounts at the fastest pace the company has seen in 17 years.

    17 years.

Anyone remember what happened 17 years ago?

Oh right. The Dot-com bubble burst.

After years of unbelievable gains in the 1990s, the NASDAQ Composite index peaked at 5,132.52 on March 10, 2000.

Simultaneously, during the first quarter of 2000, investors were rushing to open new brokerage accounts invest their savings in the stock market.

The NASDAQ Composite subsequently fell nearly 80% over the next 2 ½ years, wiping out trillions of dollars of wealth from retail investors.

The last phase of any bubble is almost invariably the euphoric shopping spree of an irrational public that buys stocks, real estate, etc. at record highs, foolishly believing that prices will keep rising indefinitely.

    That’s what happened in 2000.

And that’s what seems to be happening today.

Investors are once again clamoring to buy expensive, popular stocks at price levels never before seen in the history of the stock market.

    Company valuations are sky-high.

At 26.44, the S&P 500’s Price/Earnings ratio is the highest EVER, except for two occasions: the 2008 crash, and the 2000 crash.

At 28.93, the “Shiller P/E ratio”, which looks at company valuations over a longer-term, 10-year period and adjusts for inflation, is at the highest level EVER, except for two occasions: the 2000 crash, and the 1929 crash.

Price to sales ratios are near the highest levels in at least 50 years.

Price to book ratios haven’t been at this level since the 2008 crash.

And the stock market cap to GDP ratio is the highest since the 2000 crash.

Billionaire investor Paul Tudor Jones described these expensive stock market valuations as “terrifying” earlier this month at a closed-door asset management conference hosted by Goldman Sachs.

Yet for some reason individual retail investors still believe that stock prices will continue to rise.

According to Yale University’s Stock Market Confidence Index, for example, over 90% of individual investors believe that the stock market will rise in the next 12 months.

Remember One Thing – Karl Denninger

The Fed has never, in its history, managed to actually prevent a market collapse.

It did not do so in 1929.

It did not do so in 1987, despite it being evident that the market was going to blow up.

It did not do so in 2000, despite it being evident that the market was grossly overheated.

It did not do so in 2008, despite having more than a year worth of warning (the two Bear Stearns hedge funds) and in fact Bernanke testified under oath that “subprime was contained.”

It will not do so this time either.

The Federal Reserve was created by the Congress of the US as the central bank of the US and has always had outstanding and excellent people working for it and costs absolutely nothing to the US Treasury and its taxpayers. In fact, the Federal Reserve has always rebated 94% of its profits each year to the US Treasury and is the single largest entity source of revenues for the US Treasury and its taxpayers.

The Federal Reserve acts as a very prudent and excellent central bank with its primary job being to handle inter-bank clearance of all banking transactions in the US. As to policies, it only sets 3 interest rates none of which matter a hoot in the US economy where all interest rates that do matter are established by the yields (interest rates) on US Treasuries.

The Federal Reserve did not run up a single penny of the $20 trillion of US government f3ederal debt and the responsibility for that belongs entirely to Congress and the Presidents who signed that spending into law.

I would suggest you learn about the Federal Reserve at:

        http://www.FederalReserve.gov

  • socalbeachdude

The Federal Reserve has nothing at all to do with any asset prices whatsoever and the Federal Reserve along with the IMF and BIS have repeatedly warned about excessive asset prices caused by manic speculation and trillions of dollars of corporate share buybacks.

FEDERAL RESERVE FED UP OVER FALSE PERCEPTIONS…

Fed officials growing wary of market complacency – By Jon Hilsenrath

Federal Reserve officials, looking out at mostly calm financial markets, are starting to wonder whether tranquility itself is something to worry about.

    http://www.marketwatch.com/story/fed-officials-growing-wary-of-market-complacency-2014-06-03-15103357?dist=tbeforebell

The main reason that corporations have borrowed trillions of dollars is for STOCK BUYBACKS and the vast majority of the money coming into the stock markets in the US and globally since 2008 has been from corporations plowing back nearly 100% of their earnings along with vast trillions of borrowed money in order to pump up the prices of their own stocks.

Bloomberg extensively reviewed this in an excellent article at:

    http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-03-04/buybacks-at-46-billion-a-month-dwarf-everything-in-u-s-market

Stock buybacks are WHAT HAVE CREATED THE BOGUS BUBBLES IN STOCK VALUATIONS and that has nothing to do with the Federal Reserve and as that slows as corporate earnings plummet, the MARKETS ARE HEADED FOR THEIR BIGGEST CRASHES IN THE HISTORY OF STOCK MARKETS.

Fear Is Creeping Back Into Markets – Bloomberg

The calm in stocks worldwide is giving way to concern, with investors in Europe and the U.S. rushing to hedge against declines and a Credit Suisse Group AG index flashing a warning as the list of economic and political obstacles grows.

The Credit Suisse Fear Barometer, which measures the cost of buying protection against declines in the S&P 500 Index, neared an all-time high this week. The higher the reading, the more expensive it is to buy protection relative to upside calls, according to Mandy Xu, an equity derivatives strategist at Credit Suisse.

‘There was NO collusion’, says defiant Trump after Justice Department bows to pressure and names former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel to lead Russian election interference probe

A defiant President Trump again proclaimed that there were no ties between his presidential campaign and Russia on the heels of a Justice Department announcement that a special counsel would take over the probe. Former FBI Director Robert Mueller, who served a decade and was then reappointed by President Obama , will take over the executive branch investigation.

Failure to do so would result in criminal charges against Comey. (18 USC 4 and 28 USC 1361) He would also, upon sufficient proof, lose his license to practice law.

The mentally sick liberal mind is something to be marvelled at, as is the globalist lunatics who hate Trump because they see their NWO agenda losing momentum.

They hate Trump because he is rocking the boat as it were and bucking the system in many ways.

The Bible promises us a global government is coming, so, this nonsensical talk of impeachment by globalist puppets, and traitor politicians does not surprise me.

Strange, how little talk there was about impeaching the last occupant of our white house, in spite of all the damage he has done to this nation???

The liberal thought process is something of a mystery.

    • JC Teecher

“The liberal thought process is something of a mystery.”

For the average person; yes it is a mystery and confounding understanding.
But for the person that has a good and truthful biblical background of understanding and knowledge of how God’s plan and prophetic word all comes to fulfillment…it all makes perfect sense for the times we are in.

      1Jo 2:15
Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
      1Jo 2:16
For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
      1Jo 2:17
And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

In verse 16, the understanding of liberalism is presented. Not that all Christians don’t struggle with these sames lusts and pride of life in the flesh world, but the key word here is “struggle”.
We as Christians do struggle, but the liberal mindset doesn’t struggle, they just accept these things as normal, and in fact live their lives in a way that manifests these lusts as priorities in their life. They actually work overtime in trying to fight anything or anyone that challenges their right to try and push their same agenda upon all of God’s children.
If they could, through will and might, or by pen and fight, make Christians turn away from the faith, and take up their evil ways of thought, they would do it.

There, the mystery is solved. To further confirm that we are truly in the last days and confirm how liberalism is rampant, read below:

      2Ti 3:1

This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
      3:2
For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
      3:3
Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
      3:4
      Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
      3:5
Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

I would imagine that investigative organizations have meetings all the time to discuss whether or not to investigate someone, whether or not to continue an investigation, etc. Those discussions have to include people contributing both investigate and don’t-investigate opinions. Does this mean that anyone who contributes a don’t-investigate opinion is guilty of obstructing justice?

The liberal left certainly is a product of the education system that they created – totally devoid of logic and critical thinking skills.

Maybe we could talk Russia into nuking DC when all of Congress is in town, along with their media hacks, special interest groups, etc. Turn everything within the Belt Way into smoking, radioactive, dust. The rest of the country could then start over and elect a new Congress. Then again, I doubt it would be any better than the gang we have there now.

I think discrimination runs high. Or half the democrat party would be impeached out of office for various crimes.
I think we need a list of Rhino Republicans now.
People like Graham need to be on it.
He has other issues like his stand on Social Security benefits. Every person in this country on Social Security needs to hear about that one and vote accordingly.
There is dumb and plumb dumb. And that is the only explanation I have for some Republicans still being in office. Mostly from plumb dumb blind and deaf people in their districts.
The real problem is there are too many corrupted officials in D.C. elected every time because they belong to the “Republican” party.
There is a time and place for everything according to the bible.
Perhaps now is the time and place to start recalling Republicans turned traitor to their own head of the party in Speaker Ryan and President Trump.

No cooperation. Far right/left taking their positions in their respective corners. It’s become nothing more than a fight w/no meeting towards the middle to consider any moderation of plans between the two. Tragic. This political fighting will eventually spill over into the streets of this country in literal physical altercations. We are divided in so many ways and the divisions are getting deeper. Our country’s house is a mess…… we’ve lost our collective way. Chaos is coming soon to our country, like the types we see on tv in other countries around the globe. Since we can’t sit down and reason things out/come to agreements on how to begin repairing issues…. smh; the writing is all over the walls. Jesus foretold these times and what will happen. Matthew 24 is one example where Christ describes what will take place. John 3:16 is one example where the Bible tells us how to inherit eternal life. Look to Christ soon for salvation please…. time is short. Concerned for all. Chris.

Iran, man. Iran. Persia. Aligning to make a move on america soon, like maybe a decade or less.
Something must happen to make America more vulnerable than it is right now, before they make their move. The tunnels to Alaska are being completed and the alignment of prophecies are getting closer together.

I believe it will happen just after a grid meltdown and America is stagnated by the blast to the point of starvation in some circles/cities.

The Great American Civil War II is on.

Trump’s enemies are launching the ‘nuke option’ to try to impeach him this year. Since they can fabricate anything (war, war crimes, fake money, etc) they will be successful almost certainly.

What will Trump do to save himself? He loves to ‘fire’. So expect to see him launch something far more than 59 cruise missiles on an empty airport. I suggest a few Mother of All Bombs unguided since his enemies are so close around him.

It is the greatest show on Earth. I just hope Civil War II will last a full 4 year term.

Former Democrat presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich says ‘Americans must put party politics aside and acknowledge that the federal government is “under attack from within.” Kucinich said the “deep state” within the bureaucracy is trying to “destroy Donald Trump’s presidency.” He said there is a “politicization” of intentionally nonpartisan agencies that has resulted in leaks to the press and a “threat to our republic.”’

We’re headed towards fascism or communism….. either way we’re toast. The sixth trumpet war is coming soon. A third of mankind will be killed. This will help set the stage for the antichrist/start of the tribulation and the NWO. Please read the writing in red in the Bible and what Christ is saying to us.

I do not mind a civil war. If we must then we must. Those traitors in our government should be placed in front of a firing squad and shot. They support the killing of babies, they support unfettered access from our southern border and they are purposely trying to undermine this country. May God have mercy on their souls if they try to impeach President Trump because they will burn in hell for their actions.

          • Thomas D Guastavino

I invest for income. I buy reliable dividend stocks and track their performance. After a huge drop like this even the good stocks with reliable dividends get hit. That’s when I buy. Enabled me to retire early.
I own no stock in facebook, amazon. Netflix or google. I own some apple because I love their products and they pay a dividend.

      • Thomas D Guastavino

Or I could become filthy rich. Better then standing around doing nothing.

      • Stuey

That isn’t what the market has been showing us so far, it has increased ever since the election and decreased with all this impeachment BS. You just believe so garbage because you hate Trump. Besides, Trump isn’t going to resign and if enough republicans voted to impeach him in the house and enough republicans senators voted to impeach after the trial in the Senate it would be the end of the republican party, the backlash that would occur from Trump voters would be overwhelming. The impeachment process is a long ordeal and even if the house votes for impeachment like they did with Clinton doesn’t mean anything will be proved in the trial in the Senate or the Senate may not even take it up like they did with Clinton. Clinton was impeached by the house but he remained the president.

‘This is the great negotiator?’ Donald cheerleader Ann Coulter admits she’s frightened that the Trump-haters were right after his ‘joke’ budget – and says his hiring Ivanka and Jared Kushner was ‘fascist’

Ann Coulter has admitted that, four months into the Trump presidency, she’s worried that her favorite candidate’s administration is a bust. Coulter – who last year published the book In Trump We Trust – has told The Daily Caller that she is beginning to doubt Trump’s ability to pull off his promised changes.

Likening his presidency to a man who promised to drive to LA, but then started heading to New York, she says there is still a chance for him to ‘turn the car around’. But if he doesn’t, she said, ‘I’ll say we had no choice, but the Trump-haters were right… It’s a nightmare. I can’t even contemplate that. Right now I’m still rooting for him to turn around.’

Dear Mr President, My favorite poem is only two lines long. It’s called ‘Self-pity’ and was written by my fellow Brit, DH Lawrence. It’s meaning is simple: human beings are uniquely susceptible to self-indulgent, emotional wallowing. I thought of this when I heard you say on Wednesday: ‘No politician in history has been treated worse or more unfairly.’ Really? Kushner A ‘Person Of Interest’ In Russian Probe

Donald Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner, has become a “person of interest” in the ongoing investigation into the new US president and his team’s ties with Russia, according to a report.

Investigators are believed to have questioned Kushner with regards to the case, the New York magazine reported on Friday.

Earlier, The Washington Post reported that a senior adviser to Trump was being investigated. It said the person under investigation was close to the President, but did not identify them.

“It’s Jared Kushner. Have confirmed this with four people. I’m not speculating,” Yashar Ali, a New York magazine reporter, said in a tweet.

Comey’s dismissal not discussed at meeting with Trump – Lavrov

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has denied recent media claims that US President Donald Trump mentioned the dismissal of FBI head James Comey during their meeting in Washington DC.

“We did not touch upon this issue at all,” Lavrov said, speaking to journalists in Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, on Saturday.

Lavrov already mentioned before that the issue of Comey’s dismissal was not discussed during the meeting with Trump.

“It is not our issue, it is his [Trump’s] prerogative,” he said during interview with Russian Channel One on May 14.

The Russian foreign minister met the US leader in the Oval Office on May 10. One day before the meeting, Trump fired James Comey.

Trump revealed highly classified information to Russian foreign minister and ambassador

President Trump revealed highly classified information to the Russian foreign minister and ambassador in a White House meeting last week, according to current and former U.S. officials, who said Trump’s disclosures jeopardized a critical source of intelligence on the Islamic State.

The information the president relayed had been provided by a U.S. partner through an intelligence-sharing arrangement considered so sensitive that details have been withheld from allies and tightly restricted even within the U.S. government, officials said.

The partner had not given the United States permission to share the material with Russia, and officials said Trump’s decision to do so endangers cooperation from an ally that has access to the inner workings of the Islamic State. After Trump’s meeting, senior White House officials took steps to contain the damage, placing calls to the CIA and the National Security Agency.

Donnie’s son-in-law Jared Kushner is acting as an unpaid ‘Senior Advisor’ to the White House in order to avoid Nepotism Laws. Kushner has no professional qualifications in US foreign policy nOr with negotiating with other nations but yet if FRONT AND CENTER with Duplicitous Donnie in all of his appearances in the Middle East. Dual Citizen Kushner (of Israel and the USA) is not who Americans elected to direct foreign policy and has become central to all of the TREASONOUS AND INANE things now going on with US foreign policy in the Middle East.

Donald Trump just had a(nother) terrible week

For a presidency pegged on unpredictability, there’s been one constant for Donald Trump these last two weeks: A series of absolutely horrible, largely self-inflicted political wounds.

Understand probability. If it is on the news, it is uncommon and should be treated as a uncommon event.

    • BS1986

If its on the news it should be treated as propaganda and dismissed as such.

      • James

        So the Manchester didn’t happen?

        • BS1986

OH it happened and the second the mainstream leftwing networks saw who did it they dropped it a day later…….hard to vouch for refugees when they are killing your babies right?

      • James

        *bombing

        • BS1986

Hard to dismiss an 8 yr old in pieces.
Trump colluding with Russia-with NO proof-easy to do.

  • James

Democrats haven’t become autocrats as Republicans have.
Why would people be more concerned about a issue that affects millions of people vs a statistically insignificant event? Self-explanatory.

    • BS1986

NOPE democrats have become the sore losers, the complainers, the fakers and bold faced liars.
Democrats lead us to a failed economy.
“statistically insignificant event”-HAHA you remember that “what difference does it make” comment hilary made about Benghazi? LOOK how that turned out for ya……..HAHAHAHAHAHA
8yr old babies are being murdered by the same group the dumb-o-crat party is wanting to import here to America-YOU should keep up that attitude PLEASE.

      • James

Democrats lead us to a failed economy?
False, unemployment and GDP have grown under Obama.

        • BS1986

Yes democrats led us to a failed economy.
“unemployment and GDP have grown under Obama”-UMMMM Unemployment is a bad thing you idiot.

      • James

“statistically insignificant event”-HAHA you remember that “what difference does it make” comment hilary made about Benghazi? LOOK how that turned out for ya……..HAHAHAHAHAHA

Still statistically insignificant. Needless to worry about statistical noise.

8yr old babies are being murdered by the same group the dumb-o-crat party is wanting to import here to America-YOU should keep up that attitude PLEASE. No democrat has supported not vetting.

        • BS1986

          So you agree with me?

  • James

2018 is going to be a high turnout election.
Turnout and Democratic Success have a R-value >.5

    • BS1986

      Democrats will lose.

  • BS1986

HAHA the daily mail UK is a biased POS.
Trump and The Russians are working to destroy obamas creation-ISIS and Soros wants to STOP trump at all costs SO I really don’t believe ANYTHING the news media prints anymore on Trump-the bias is so left leaning its nauseating

    • socalbeachdude

Laughably false. The Daily Mail is highly accurate as to their articles and is the largest news source in the USA and one of the very best and most accurate. They have actually been quite sympathetic and fair as to their coverage of Duplicitous Dufus Donnie.

      • BS1986

Negative there beach bum. Cause IF they had anything like that, as far as concrete evidence, charges would have been filed. THE FACT that NO CHARGES have been filed shows your side has NOTHING, so keep whining so we can stomp you some more in the 2018 midterms.

  • BS1986

    AGAIN, daily mail propaganda……..
You mean like Obama during his reign of terror spying on Americans with no warrant.
HOWS THIS-if you got something to charge GO FOR IT. OTHERWISE you just look like…….sore losers and liars.

    • socalbeachdude

The Daily Mail is a superb source of news and is the largest circulation news source where in the USA and they were 100% correct as to their article. Get a clue, dude.

      • BS1986

HAHA They are a leftwing propaganda rag that’s only useful for lining my birdcage or maybe as fire tinder.
They were correct huh? HOW? Explain? Cause if any of that were true charges would have already been filed. Soros propaganda machine is in full swing and DUMB-A’s like yourself eat it up.
        Get over it you lost.
