Welcome to the new normalDid you know that 15 trillion dollars of global stock market wealth has been wiped out since last June?  The worldwide financial crisis that began in the middle of last year is starting to spin wildly out of control.  On Friday, the Dow plunged another 390 points, and it is now down a total of 1,437 points since the beginning of this calendar year.  Never before in U.S. history have stocks ever started a year this badly.  The same thing can be said in Europe, where stocks have now officially entered bear market territory.  As I discussed yesterday, the economic slowdown and financial unraveling that we are witnessing are truly global in scope.  Banks are failing all over the continent, and I expect major European banks to start making some huge headlines not too long from now.  And of course let us not forget about China.  On Friday the Shanghai Composite declined another 3.6 percent, and overall it is now down more than 20 percent from its December high.  Much of this chaos has been driven by the continuing crash of the price of oil.  As I write this article, it has dipped below 30 dollars a barrel, and many of the big banks are projecting that it still has much farther to fall.

The other night, Barack Obama got up in front of the American people and proclaimed that anyone that was saying that the economy was not recovering was peddling fiction.  Well, if the U.S. economy is doing so great, then why in the world has Wal-Mart decided to shut down 269 stores?…

Walmart (WMT) will close 269 stores around the world in a strategic move to focus more on its supercenters and e-commerce business, the company said Friday.

The closures include 154 U.S. locations, encompassing Walmart’s entire fleet of 102 ‘Express’ format stores, its smallest stores that have been in pilot testing since 2011. Some supercenters, Sam’s Club locations and Neighborhood Markets will also close, plus 115 stores in Latin American markets. The closures were decided based on financial performance and how well the locations fit with Walmart’s broader strategy, says Greg Hitt, a company spokesman.

We have grown accustomed to other major retailers shutting down stores, but this is Wal-Mart.

Wal-Mart doesn’t retreat.  For decades, Wal-Mart has been on a relentless march forward.  They have been an unstoppable juggernaut that has expanded extremely aggressively and that has ruthlessly crushed the competition.

I was absolutely stunned when I saw that they were going to close down 269 stores.  If you want to know if your local store is in danger, you can view the full list right here.

Overall, 10,000 Wal-Mart employees will be affected.  I could understand closing down a few underperforming stores, but if the U.S. economy truly is in great shape then it wouldn’t make any sense at all to shut down hundreds of stores.

What in the name of Sam Walton is going on out there?

The truth, of course, is that the U.S. economy is in great danger.  We have now entered the next great crisis, but most communities around the country never even recovered from the last one.  In fact, the Wall Street Journal is reporting that a whopping 93 percent of all counties in the United States “have failed to fully recover” from the last recession…

More than six years after the economic expansion began, 93% of counties in the U.S. have failed to fully recover from the blow they suffered during the recession.

Nationwide, 214 counties, or 7% of 3,069, had recovered last year to prerecession levels on four indicators: total employment, the unemployment rate, size of the economy and home values, a study from the National Association of Counties released Tuesday found.

The next few weeks are going to be very interesting to watch.  The economic fundamentals continue to deteriorate, and the financial markets are finally starting to catch up with economic reality.

As the collapse on Wall Street accelerates, we are going to increasingly see panic selling and forced liquidations.  In the past, it was mostly humans that had their hands on the controls during market crashes, but today the machines are making more of the decisions than ever before.  The following comes from CNBC

The new market age is decidedly different: Rather than that seething cacophony, aggressive corrections like the current ones are directed by a faceless metronome of computer-generated orders, triggering irresistible momentum and trillions in losses.

Amid it all, market veterans are left to ponder when the script will flip and market direction will turn not by newfound optimism among traders in the pits, but rather by algorithms that generate “buy” rather than “sell” signals.

It feels like sell program after sell program,” said Michael Cohn, chief market strategist at Atlantis Asset Management, a boutique firm in New York. “It seems to happen first thing in the morning, and then however the market transpires during the day is how they close it. If it looks like it’s coming back, they’ll take it at the end. If if looks like it’s heading lower, they’ll slam it at the end of the day.”

Earlier today, an article authored by Michael Pento entitled “A recession worse than 2008 is coming” was posted on CNBC.  Here is a short excerpt…

But a recession has occurred in the U.S. about every five years, on average, since the end of WWII; and it has been seven years since the last one — we are overdue.

Most importantly, the average market drop during the peak to trough of the last 6 recessions has been 37 percent. That would take the S&P 500 down to 1,300; if this next recession were to be just of the average variety.

But this one will be worse.

If stocks do drop a total of 37 percent, that would just bring them back to levels that would be considered “normal” or “average” by historical standards.  There is certainly the possibility that they could fall much farther than that.

And of course the markets are so incredibly fragile at this point that any sort of a “trigger event” could cause a collapse of epic proportions.

All it is going to take is a major disaster or emergency of some sort.

Abrams has followed tradition and placed that line in the current “Star Wars” movie. It’s in all the others.)

      Take a good look at the demographic areas where Wal-Mart is closing. Shop-lifting, robbery, assaults in the parking lot has killed these locations. That is NOT caused by the economy but by something we can not discuss.

I know I spent 40years in Africa, a mass increase in disorder and polarization of ethnic groups as people band together and blame others for their woes. Stocks crash – liquidations and unemployment then civil war on the cards.

      It does no such thing. Walmart is a profitable company w/a low PE and reasonable debtload.. just like McDonalds. Its common for chains to close underperforming stores. Half the stores are in collapsing Brazil. Approximately an equal number of stores are opening in ratio the ones closing.

        Yes that is true, but when such an even of closing stores happens, while being profitable… Well that is called peaking. I would say Wallmart has peaked. And during long term… it can start to decline, if whatever fuels it’s business crashes down.

          Correct, so long as we all understand that ALL history – of all races and peoples – is bloody. The Indians on the North American continent before the Europeans arrived experienced bloody inter-tribal wars all the time as well as the Latinos who incurred on Indian territory. If it’s human, it’s violent and part of our sin nature. Not all the slaves that helped to build the country were Black, as indentured servants from Europe were oftentimes tricked into ever-increasing years of servitude and labor. At some point we all must agree to forgive each other and move forward as Americans.             I agree. The only history we have is what has been recorded and preserved through the ages to glean from for our edification. Slavery has been around for millenia and we were not the first nation to use it. In fact Africans had African slaves. It bothers me that the very ones who are spreading such disinformation about who is responsible for destroying this country at a grass roots level don’t see that its so much bigger than you or I. God said that my people are destroyed for a lack of knowledge. We are not only to be wise in the Word but earthly matters as well. If you are forewarned is to be forearmed. If they love this country so much then why don’t I hear them proclaim what is best for all. The government has enough self interest groups without adding more to the pot. I don’t know where or what they base their argument on. The Declaration of Independence clearly says that “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.             Our species evolved out of Africa way after the continents split. Genetics will show you that all humans are descended from the one woman in Africa – genetic Eve, who was a black African woman. the original man/woman, homo-sapiens- were Africans. Other races are adaptations and genetic selection. White skin is a genetic mutation that allowed for more vitamin D absorbed through the skin, an advantage in cold agricultural climates with vitamin D deficient diets. As time passed, more and more white skinned people survived and developed into a race. This is science, not speculation or religion. Any second year university biology student can tell you the same thing. Don’t be angry at science.

You have not considered the fact that if the economy crashes there are those that will go insane in an insane world and I doubt that living in a completely chaotic world that you will be able to trust the members of your own group.         I disagree with you on this one sister. This government is bringing in people “not americans” to take over jobs. One reason I believe is the fact that the liberal colleges are not teaching for “jobs”. They are teaching their liberal ideas and students come out of college not educated for the type of jobs in today’s world. Therefore, because our education system sucks, the Europeans and others are taking the jobs.

        The other thing is that the people who are stuck in the inner cities and apparently do not want to work, the illegals that come into our country are taking the jobs that uneducated people are too lazy to do. Easier to collect welfare and food stamps!

Yesterday they were mocking the RBS report (Sell everything) on a morning Australian TV show, saying look the US stocks are back up!! . Obama must be sweating bricks. When the fed raised rates and Yellen said that the economy is fundamentally stable – that was the clue that is is all over. Greenspan and others said the same just prior to 2008 crash. I think Obama was trying to talk stocks up – it might be a go for broke attitude.

Again I reiterate that Banksters cannot be trusted so remove your cash if you have more than a few 100 $ , this is shaping up to be brutal and we’re nowhere near the end.
    I visited one of my banks again this week and again there was a major problem fulfilling my requests , there was no cash, it took thirty minutes for them to scratch up enough to meet my demands.

        Many food outlets will open soon. We have bread outlet in our area, 1/2 price or even lower for a loaf. These warehouse stores will carry staples and people will just have to learn to cook in order to survive.

      This crash will be horrible yes, but it will still be patchable. Oil is still cheap and plenty enough. This crisis will be temporary and working with the 7 year model. But the thing that will make you think, is that now the general trend will now either peak, or start a very slow decline, too slow to annoy the “psychopaths in chiefs”. That is the economic forecast for the next 14 years. The true decline will happen after the conventional oil collapse, when the economy will have to return to coal based technology. Because I doubt that humans have enough wisdom to move to functional renewables, due to their poor EROEI/EROI (above 5:1 but not high enough to beat the profitability of coal and natural gas). Greed and Fear is what gonna determine our future.

Walmart came in here years ago and drove all the mom and pop outfits out, then during one of the many low points they bailed out and Alco took over their Building, then last year they also bailed. DG and Family Dollar are keeping most of the poor folks around here from starving.

      You are so right about Wal-Mart’s business model being focused on the middle class and working class. If their consumer base is hurting then that means the company will struggle and eventually have to close stores. I try not to shop in Wal-Mart in the first place because of my own personal beliefs about the company, even though their prices can stretch my budget a lot farther than say, Target.

      Seriously, I was on the fence about our economy tanking until Wal-Mart annouced the closing of these stores. When the King of retail annouces that amount of store closures, something isn’t right.

    I’ve been watching the markets for a while now. I’m not an investor or pro in anyway shape or form, but even I can understand the trend, and what it will ultimately lead too. Even if nothing comes from this right now, logic tells us that u.s debt is unpayable, so it is a mathematical certainty the house of cards will fall eventually. (I failed math, but any idiot with half a brain can make this connection it’s so obvious!) It definitely feels not too far away, trying to predict it last year and sure enough it catches us off-guard in the new year

      Walmart is opening 300 more stores. The ones they are closing are neighborhood markets, which may have been just a test concept that they decided was not worthy of continuing.

      Macy’s is overpriced and people can find similar quality products cheaper online, so really a no brainer why they are closing retail stores.

      Here is a prediction for you: most retail stores will close in the next 5-10 years because most people will be shopping exclusively online.

      The internet has given people power to comparison shop and to buy at the lowest, most rock bottom price for an item.

      I am surprises Staples is not closing down some of their retail stores as they are the most overpriced for products around.

Your projection of 300 hundred stores opening. If the economy continues to dive, they may not all open. Macy was doing fine, while the economy was good.After all internet shopping did not just start. If that is what killed them. Why did they not die out a decade ago? Also for your prediction most retail stores will close in the next 5 to 10 years I agree. But the boom in internet sales. I think has to do with a declining economy. People are forced to buy as cheaply as possible. Consider the boom in dollar stores, in the last decade. I can tell you one thing. I have never met a women, who liked to shop for clothes online.

There isn’t one Republican I have spoken to, and I talk to them all day long, that is happy with the Republican party. Based on what we are told by these people, and they are older folks, mostly whites, and they rip us a new one with each phone call we make. They hate the Republican party. They ARE NOT paying their dues this year to the Republican party to renew their memberships. I have not had one of them do so. They say that they would, once someone in the Republican party grows some balls. They do like Trump, cause he says what has to be said, and they believe he will “get ‘er done”. The hatred and animosity that we have experienced from the Republican base is just astronomical. I would not be surprised that Bernie Sanders became the next President. It’s just a mess!

EU passed legislation on the 1st January so depositors can be bailed in when their bank gets in trouble. I believe there is a time table for collapse in motion.     You would have to be in a coma not to know that the entire world is heading for a day of reckoning. There are many who are now waking up to the cold hard reality that we have been deceived. If machines are running the markets then that would mean the powers that be transferred that responsibility long ago maybe around the time of the 2008 crash because they knew what was coming up the road ahead. This was done to deliberately give the perception or rather deception that all is well topside while they build, complete and descend to their underground bunkers paid for with our hard earned tax dollars. The FEDS and their co-conspirators knew there was a massive lane closed signed and they moved forward with their hidden agendas. Now that the economy has taken a wrong detour the talking heads are scrambling to cover the lies but they are now inadvertently showing how bad it is on the surface. If we had any sense, any allegiance to our country and fellow country men as a nation we would have a sit in all over America. No one showing up for work anywhere and force their hand to tell the truth! If we allow them to continue with their nefarious plans we will live to regret that we did not take a stand. There is strength in numbers and yet we are suffering silently and individually.     I suggest this is a move to consolidate business.
    They are closing their most inefficient stores and opening in their place super stores.
    Meaning they will sacrifice small business for a much larger store to take its place.
    Wal-Mart is alive and well and likely to grow in the next few years.
    The people employed there not so much.
    It is a typical ploy to show how little they respect the common working person employed in these stores. They will make billions while their workers are on welfare.
    The real problem here is that hard work gets you no where.
    The people that work smart instead of hard are likely to gain.
    All of this depends on the average person’s need for security vs. their need to learn a better way of making a living.

      I suggest the abolishment of small stores, and virtualize them on the web. Convert the big stores to Warehouse stores, and virtualize them on them web. A few exceptions: housing renting and sale, banks, food, clothes and communication/computer stores. Those type of stores should be an hybrid model, half store, half warehouse with web. Because the modern user of this way of making business, needs basic physical services as theses.

    Yes… the big crash is coming, because the LORD is orchestrating it. It has been building up for years, but it “officially” began on December 16th of last year, as the Federal Reserve played around with interest rates. Something very similar happened on July 26th, 2007. The overnight lending rates that banks charge one another started nudging up ever so slightly, until it eventually spiraled out of control, leading into the crisis of 2008. It is all related to America trying to take God given land away from the Jewish people in Israel. The LORD has a controversy with the nations, and everyone best get prepping while you still can. That is your “feeling that something really bad is about to happen”. The LORD!

    I have been a home improvement contractor for the past 28 years and have experienced a number of downturns; the worst, of course, being 2008. I went 7 months without a phone call to my business after the Rosh Hashanah “warning.” 2015 was eerily similar to 2007 where the first half of the year was pretty good, but then it just seemed to fall off the cliff in what is usually my busiest time of year from August to December. In 2007, it began just after Countrywide mortgage failed and progressed from there. However, even though in 2015 we didn’t see a Countrywide event business definitely slowed. A lot of contractor friends here in New Jersey were complaining, as well. So, based on past experience, Michael, you are right on because my business always seems to be one of the first indicators along with real estate, and it is certainly flashing a red warning light.

          Despite how you feel about corporations, nothing would stop them from doing that sort of thing if they wanted to. They would incentivize their proprietary payment system, and it’d seem beneficial (much like company stock) to naive people, but it’d effectively keep all value recycling within the company… Without some form of regulation, companies could pull schemes we could never imagine. Look at what happened with banks when regulations were lifted. Total exploration, utter destruction. And removing those regulations was the opposite of what you think of as “leftist”. There has to be a balance somewhere. I’d say we need to leave regulation to the individual states.

If someone tries to prevent an event, it will cause an other event that will reconnect the excluded system back with the rest of reality, in a less desirable interaction. That is basically what happened with the housing market in 2007. So… it would have been wiser to not prop the market, and let it fail to it’s ground level.

    I think America in particular is in trouble. Think about our economy for a moment.We are no longer producing or manufacturing as a majority..nor are we farming. Our economy is mostly service based..the how can i help you jobs. I know because Ive been in the service industry my whole adult life. My town consists of restaurants..motels..salons..bars..stores..and about 3 medium sized factories along with some machine shops for repairs etc. There are many places to spend money on the THINGS that make us happier or our lives easier but where the heck do these things come from? China..and other countries. If you are rich you have plenty of places to spend..but if your poor you are not buying..75 percent or more of our country is lower to middle class..id guess that most work in service related jobs or no jobs at all. This is just the beginning folks. You want to foresee whats going to happen..well heres what i see..the stocks are crashing..this will cause the domino effect that any crash causes..the rich lose money..the poor have stopped spending except for necessities. The market crashes further..people are fired for lack of business..businesses close..unemployment skyrockets..now we all know what happens then? Chaos ensues. If America was still a manufacturing based or agricultural based economy this wouldnt be as bad..but its all service based. I know because if i wanted any job in my community right now i could choose from these many options..i could sell insurance..work in a bank..store clerk..repair technician..librarian..restaurant worker..nursing homes or hospitals..telemarketer..car sales..therapists..cops or firemen..or city government or city workers. Oh or a very limited amount of factory jobs. Hmmm..im thinking these are all service based. My whole community could be out of work if people stop spending on everything but food. This could be a crisis of epic proportions. Im thinking..hell i have been thinking for a long time that America is in trouble..and Im just a lowly bartender.

      The Chinese have pegged their Yuan currency to our dollar at 6 to 1. A dollar is unit labor cost. Pegging the Yuan means a CEO gets 6 Chinese workers for every one American worker. How can one American worker ever compete with 6 Chinese workers regardless of automation equipment. Say we paid off our national debt had the best trained workers in the world the CEOs will still get 6 Chinese workers for every one American. This why all the factories are gone.

    Most WalMart store departments are actually doing quite well; it’s the various food departments that are showing very poor sales.
    It could be due to people looking for a better deal on essentials but I believe it’s also (partly) because of a backlash against the quality of foods in places like Walmart.
    They’re full of GMOs and HF corn syrup etc.
    Those who do have money are certainly changing their food-buying habits. Companies producing organic items can barely keep up with demand. Farmers growing organic crops and free-range animals are having no problem selling everything they produce.
