If You Could Make More Money By Going On Welfare Instead Of Working, Would You Do It?

Watching TelevisionIf you could stay home and relax all day and actually make more money than you do at your current job, would you do it?  That sounds crazy, but this is actually a very real dilemma for millions upon millions of Americans.  According to a shocking new study that was just released by the Cato Institute, people on welfare are actually better off than minimum wage workers in 35 U.S. states.  And in 13 states, those on welfare actually do better than those making $15 an hour.  So why bother?  It is very difficult to find a job in this economy, especially a good one.  As I mentioned yesterday, seven out of every eight jobs that have been “created” since Barack Obama has been president have been part-time jobs.  Why slave away flipping burgers, stocking shelves for some retail giant or working for some temp agency when you could just sit home and make more money collecting government checks?  Yes, there is definitely a minority of Americans that hate the idea of becoming dependent on the government and would never want to take advantage of the system like that, but that minority seems to be shrinking.  At this point, about half the country gets money from the government each month anyway, so why not collect “your share”?  If someone is offering to give you something for free, it is only human nature to be at least a little bit tempted.  And right now the federal government is making it extremely tempting to give up on work entirely and become a permanent welfare check collector.

Before people start getting really upset, let me once again reiterate that most of the people that are receiving financial assistance from the government actually need it.  Not everyone is abusing the system, and not everyone is using their food stamps to buy lobster.

Poverty in the United States has absolutely exploded in recent years, and our economy simply does not produce enough jobs for everyone anymore.  We certainly do not want those without jobs to go hungry or to be sleeping in the streets.

But what we have today is a situation where there is a huge incentive in many states to actually give up on work entirely and become a dependent of the state instead.

According to the Cato Institute, someone in the state of New York that goes on welfare can bring home more in money and benefits than an entry-level school teacher makes in an entire year…

The federal government funds 126 separate programs targeted towards low-income people, 72 of which provide either cash or in-kind benefits to individuals. (The rest fund community-wide programs for low-income neighborhoods, with no direct benefits to individuals.) State and local governments operate more welfare programs. Of course, no individual or family gets benefits from all 72 programs, but many do get aid from a number of them at any point in time.

Today, the Cato institute is releasing a new study looking at the state-by-state value of welfare for a mother with two children. In the Empire State, a family receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, Medicaid, food stamps, WIC, public housing, utility assistance and free commodities (like milk and cheese) would have a package of benefits worth $38,004, the seventh-highest in the nation.

While that might not sound overly generous, remember that welfare benefits aren’t taxed, while wages are. So someone in New York would have to earn more than $21 per hour to be better off than they would be on welfare. That’s more than the average statewide entry-level salary for a teacher.

If you are going to live off of welfare, the key is to pick the right state.  Not all states offer the same level of benefits.

In some states, you have to make far more than the minimum wage before it pays not to be on welfare.  In fact, there are 12 different states where you actually have to make more than $15 an hour before you start doing better than welfare recipients…

Nationwide, our study found that the wage-equivalent value of benefits for a mother and two children ranged from a high of $60,590 in Hawaii to a low of $11,150 in Idaho. In 33 states and the District of Columbia, welfare pays more than an $8-an-hour job. In 12 states and DC, the welfare package is more generous than a $15-an-hour job.

Of course not all welfare recipients take advantage of all of the programs that they are eligible for.  But if you do know how to work the system, you can live very comfortably at the expense of the government in many states.

So what is the solution?

Well, it would be great if we had enough jobs for everyone, but that is definitely not the case.  In fact, the U.S. economy is probably going to continue to lose good jobs in the years ahead if current trends continue.

Unfortunately, that also means that poverty and dependence on the government are likely going to continue to grow, especially when the next major wave of the economic collapse strikes.

If you want to get an idea of where we are headed, just look at Detroit.  Once upon a time, Detroit actually had the highest per capita income in the entire country.  But now it is a rotting, festering, bankrupt hellhole where tens of thousands of stray dogs freely roam the streets…

As many as 50,000 stray dogs roam the streets and vacant homes of bankrupt Detroit, replacing residents, menacing humans who remain and overwhelming the city’s ability to find them homes or peaceful deaths.

One Humane Society official that recently visited the city to help deal with the dog crisis described what she witnessed as “almost post-apocalyptic“…

The number of strays signals a humanitarian crisis, said Amanda Arrington of the Humane Society of the United States, based in Washington. She heads a program that donated $50,000 each to organizations in Detroit and nine other U.S cities to get pets vaccinated, fed, spayed and neutered.

Arrington said when she visited Detroit in October, “It was almost post-apocalyptic, where there are no businesses, nothing except people in houses and dogs running around.”

“The suffering of animals goes hand in hand with the suffering of people.”

But don’t laugh at Detroit.

The rest of the country is going down the exact same path.

Just recently, Charles Nenner told Newsmax TV that another recession is rapidly approaching that that it is “going to be bad”…

Technical analyst Charles Nenner didn’t mince words when asked about the United States facing another recession.

“It’s going to be bad,” Nenner told Newsmax TV in an exclusive interview.

And it looks like the folks in Washington are getting very concerned about all of the economic warnings signs that we have been seeing as well.

Just this week, Barack Obama “held a special, closed door meeting with the heads of the U.S. government’s financial, monetary and oversight agencies. It included members of the Federal Reserve, the FDIC, the CFTC, the SEC, and the Federal Housing Finance Agency.”

So why did Obama gather all of the top financial officials for a secret closed door meeting?

John Embry told King World News that he thinks it is because the administration is deeply alarmed about what is happening in the financial markets…

I firmly believe the reason the President has called this meeting today is because if interest rates in the U.S. continue to rise, it could really unleash something disastrous. We are talking here about the possibility of a meltdown. It’s interesting that the President would call in that many big hitters, the head of every significant financial agency in the United States, as well as the Fed and the Comptroller of the Currency, etc — this is a very large meeting today.

I’ve always believed that the global financial crisis of 2008 was just the opener. We have now bought the better part of 5 years now through unlimited money creation. But as we head into this next massive, and what I believe will be a larger round of destabilization, I want KWN readers around the world to understand that the central planners don’t have the same weapons to fight this global financial crisis. This is why I believe they are desperately attempting right now, today in this meeting, to stave off this crisis.

And the truth is that our “leaders” in Washington have good reason to be concerned.  If interest rates keep going up rapidly we are going to be in for a world of hurt.

Sadly, most Americans seem to have already forgotten how painful 2008 was, and that was only a preview of coming attractions.

The worst economic crisis in the history of the United States is on the horizon, and most people are going to be absolutely blindsided by it.

I hope that you are getting prepared while you still can.

  • MichaelfromTheEconomicCollapse

    Well, would you?

    Michael

    • Kim

      I might. It depends.

      • Tom_F

        Very helpful.

        • Kim

          Happy to help.

    • davidmpark

We did. And it takes some of the sting out of a total crisis. Still hurts a lot; but it’s one less worry in a world of issues.

I would also recommend that if someone has a trade skill (mechanic, machinist, textiles, etc) to have the tools of their trade on-hand as part of a year’s supply.

Bartering and favors will soon be the new currency.

    • faded

nope before I was making about 4200 a month and people I worked with were making about the same then talking about getting on WIC etc..my wife tried to talk me into it I told her no because its abuse of the system. we can survive on our own and we don’t need assistance. we had some rough times here and there but once we cut where they needed to be cut we came out on top and most of those people who were are either divorced or in piles or credit card debt…. Question Michael why do most women feel a need to keep up with others either it be kids birthday parties or just vacations… I try and save money etc.. but I get bombarded with so and so Is going on vacation why don’t we? so and so got a new car/ house why don’t we? I’ve noticed talking to a lot of men that a lot of women do this toxic behavior?

      • Rebecca in TN

        Hi faded,
I think society pressures women into behaving like that. Women spread lots of gossip and they brag a lot. It starts from childhood and escalates from there. They grow up thinking that their only value is to be prettier and richer than the other women. Women lack appropriate role models. I’m wondering if your wife has a lot of negative female influences in her life… Try to remind her of what SHE has that is better than “so and so.” Say things like, “Well so and so isn’t nearly as smart as you are, you are much more practical than she is.” Things like that. Encourage her that she is better than them because she is smart, saves, money, and takes better care of her kids than they do.

        • guest

I hate to say, look at what women have become, because I’m sure there are still some genuine feminine women out there. However as a group, I am disgusted by what women have become.

    • Vermaphax

I have not worked since 2008 after a voluntary layoff, I was able to get unemployment for a short while but then it was over…I did what I did because my wife is 100% military disabled and we are fine, I did it so someone else in my small town could have a job.

    • MeMadMax

I had to for my wife and three kids.
If I was single and on my own, homeless I be(maybe, but who knows).

    • Carlos Danger

Six years ago I had a very different attitude towards work and welfare. Now that I know the game is rigged, and my entire life savings has been wiped out I wouldn’t feel bad about taking from a system that takes even more from me. To me, the biggest offenders milking the system, eating lobster are politicians.

    • Rebecca in TN

No. What kind of message does that send to one’s children?

  • seafarers

No. Had the chance when I lost my job 3 years ago. It’s a character issue. Trust God as He provides for His own in amazing ways.

    • Tim

      True.

Also if you recieve something from the government, the government owns you and your soul.
Many people think that they are winning the system, but they are being decieved.when the government gives you these goodies, you are its property and it can make you do anything that it wants to to you. like black mailing you. Do it or they will cut all of your goodies or even put you in prision,if you get out of hand.

      • MomOf3Boys

This is the most retarded comment ever!!… “if you receive something from the government, the government owns you and your soul”—I just un-officially adopted my nephew, and I can’t add him to my insurance with work, so I got him Medicaid. No one but God will ever own my soul. <3

        • Sequoia

I am refering to people I know that are lazy and want an easy life. You momof3boys are trying to make it by working and doing your best.
I’m not against giving a helping hand to those that are trying their best.I am mad at the ones that have abused the system and are proud of it.
There should be some safety net for those who are trying and help those who are making a difference like you.

Is that what you think about retired vets? Give me a break!

        • Sequoia

Your situation is different, because you served the country and you did’t leech off of the society, like other abled body people.
The veterans that return from duty or retired, deserve help, especially since most of you went through hell defending this country.

          • Gay Veteran

jeez, I trying to remember the last time the military defended this country.
            Iraq? no
Afghanistan? not after the first year
            Vietnam? no
            Korea? no

    • jaxon64

I agree–just couldn’t do it. It would be tempting Michael, since I have never been a morning person and there are times when I see the ridiculous % the govt confiscates from my labors on my paystubs–but ultimately no! I will never be other than a free man–what is really baffling are those who fought to end the slavery of the Democrat Southern plantation owner and have now voluntarily returned to slavory to the Dems as the tell them what there life value is worth. Instead of a country plantation home they have been traded crime and drug filled ghettos by their Democrat masters–I guess that democrat creation–the KKK–still lives in spirit in the likes of the Harry Reid’s, Sen Byrd (deceased) Mikulski’s, Sarbanes etc…
PS: Michael, I recently read an article that had lists and a budget breakdown listed which showed how a single mother in Philly, PA making $50K per year would have a higher standard of living and more discretionary cash by just staying home and applying for all of the eligible welfare entitlements she was eligible for……makes me want to pull my hair out. Mostly it just makes me want to sit down and rest a bit–providing for so many is exhausting…

      • Jaxon64

Michael–I also wanted to say that I received your book in the mail today. It is much thicker than I expected. I was expecting a book about the size of “One Second After” or some of the other books of this genre but it is physically much more substantial. I look forward to cracking it open tonight –thanks for your time and efforts to awaken the masses…

      • Nobody

Non of us are free. If you live in the US than your a debt slave. Now get back to work so you can pay for my food stamps.

guess you didn’t know that after the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act that those racist Democrats became racist Republicans. Nixon took advantage of that with his southern strategy

    • chris

Maybe the question for you should be if you had a choice of a job packing the bodies of dead Christians and Jews and Jehovah Witnesses and patriots into the FEMA disposable coffins or refusing and having your children shot in front of you by those in authority what would you do?

  • davidmpark

“Before people start getting really upset, let me once again reiterate
that most of the people that are receiving financial assistance from the
government actually need it. Not everyone is abusing the system, and
not everyone is using their food stamps to buy lobster.”

    Thanks Mike. :)

    • 007

Not everyone, but a hell of a lot, do freeload. So I guess that means we should not try to correct thisobvious rediculous abuse. This is a slap in the face to everyone who gets up and struggles in a job to make ends meet.

Only in Obama’s America are those that work hard and act wisely punished. Those that are lazy, immoral and irresponsible are rewarded.

Thank God this insanity is not going to last much longer.

      • davidmpark

Um… I don’t work cause I’m my wife’s caregiver. Not freeloading. In fact, we lost a lot of our coverage this month due to a back payment from Soc Sec. We are honest in our reporting, and sometimes it costs us dearly.

I would work, but when I did the house was a disaster and she couldn’t cope with the children. And with the children being of a young age, they just ran wild. I have to be home.

Trying to get a work from home job, but there are few that I’m qualified for.

        • Hank Kingsley

Don’t be so quick to judge, Hank, just because you don’t believe in God, doesn’t mean you have to *try* to belittle other people’s faith. Keyword: Try. Moving on…

          • CharlaS

REPEAT, RPEAT, REPEAT, REPEAT, REPEAT, REPEAT, REPEAT, REPEAT, REPEAT, REPEAT, REPEAT,
You sound like a broken record. Not everyone CHOOSES to imitate your attitudes.

        • Sequoia

          I agree with you 100%.
The family and God is where our loyalty belongs.

        • 007

Enjoy your benefits while they last. Because so many people feel they are victims that just can’t cope with their reality, our ship is sinking. There are not enough of us left that can actually support everyone that just can’t handle things.

So we just print the money to pay for all these benefits. Pretty soon your food stamps won’t be able to buy you a bag of dog food.

Look whats happening in India with 30% inflation. They just printed money until they lost control. Now they are forced to stop printing money and raise interest rates.

What will you do when they cut off your check or it won’t by you a box of dog biscuits?

          • davidmpark

I’ve got backups :) Problem is, they won’t legally let me do it right now.

I used to create a lot here (electricity, foods, chemical cleansers, fuels, cast and forged metals, etc.) at home ’til the neighbors called zoning and police to stop us from being productive citizens on our property. We kept it quiet for several years… ’til someone decided to “accidentally” jump our fences and found out. But, I hid a lot of the instructions and manuals, along with my notes.

I can do it again; bigger, better, and far more productive than before!

Just wish they’d let me; we wouldn’t need so much assistance.

      • Caratacus

Here in the UK this has been going on for years and has been getting worse, no matter which stripe of government bribes its way into office.

Governments actually want this, believe it or not, because it creates a client voter base that rapidly outnumbers the productive part of the economy. Whoever states that they will not be nasty to people on welfare are assured of victory at the next election. In the USA you still have time to turn this around … hope you do better than we did :-)

      • CharlaS

Yes, there are many people who need help today. However, regarding people milking the system, look up ‘Entitlement Mentality Gone Wild’ on youtube, If you are easily offended, DO NOT WATCH THIS. It contains explicit racial slurs from black entertainer Chris Rock that will offend many.

    • Digger

I am tired of working to pay for all my kids. I didn’t know I had so many.

    • http://americandictators.blogspot.com/ WarriorClass III

When you are forced to support these people under the threat of prison or being shot, it’s theft – whether they “need” it or not.

And the fact is their “benefits” come from stealing from the working poor, not the government. The government is just the thug with the gun.

  • K

If working does not allow you to make ends meet, than you do what you have to .If in the fifties a guy pumping gas, and changing tires could make ends meet. Then why is it different now? Either prices are too high, or wages are too low. As a single man, I would not go on welfare. As a family man, the kids come first. If I had to go on welfare for them to be able to eat. Then yes I would, no matter how many indignities, I had to suffer. Perhaps the real question is why can people not make ends meet, when they are working forty or more hours a week? We used to celebrate work, now we only celebrate certain kinds of work. Many people look down on low end workers, just the same they look down on welfare people. People need to remember, But for the grace of God, there go I.

    • http://economicmythsandlies.com/ economicmythsandlies

There is nothing wrong with accepting help to make ends meet. There is something wrong when those receiving help are making nearly twice as much as half the people working in a state like Hawaii. The system shouldn’t be dismantled and those accepting help shouldn’t be condmened. However, it should be reformed so the minority that abuse it can’t continue to do so.

      • K

If you are sure the welfare people are the whole problem, then cut them. But what if part of the problem, is the workers make too little?

        • http://economicmythsandlies.com/ economicmythsandlies

That is part of the problem too. We need to fix both.

          • K

Bless you. That was the only point, I was trying to make.

    • Rebecca

I think it really started getting out of control after WWII when the women who joined the workforce never actually left. Once the standard became 2 working adults per family, people had more money coming in and therefore companies could start charging more for their products. People decided that lots of money, nice cars, and stuff was more important than having an adult stay home to care for the house and the children. I think this was the trigger even for things spiraling out of control…

      • guest

I think you’re right. I think we can blame women for that. Because as sure as satan whispered lies into Eve’s ear, he did the same to American women. They wholeheartedly took the bait. Pointing out 55 million slaughtered babies does not make one a misogynist.

        • Hank Kingsley

Nope, ‘god’ is an invention of the elites to keep the masses dumb, scared

To quote Shakespeare, “Methinks the lady doth protest too much.”

        • Gay Veteran

pathetic. have you adopted an unwanted baby? no? then shut up

          • MiniBooger

I was an unwanted baby. Had abortions been easy to obtain in that day, I wouldn’t be here. We’re far too quick to abort than to seek alternatives. Most abortions are performed out of being “inconvenienced”. With all of the birth control that is out there today – and it being free to those that can’t afford it – abortions should virtually disappear. You would think…

          • Gay Veteran

unfortunately a lot of the people opposed to abortions ALSO oppose birth control

          • MiniBooger

Only the post-conception birth control is controversial and not recognized by most Christian religions. All other forms are acceptable. It’s only the fringe elements that prohibit all forms and that is not where the majority lives.

          • Gay Veteran

“Christian religions” should have no control over the matter

          • MiniBooger

ummm… they don’t at a secular level. They only direct within their own religion which they are fully within their rights to do. Those that have abortions are typically outside of their influence or creed.

          • Gay Veteran

            amen!

most women left the work force after WWII. would now be very difficult for only 1 working parent to support a family

    • ConcernedAmerican

Excellent points. Well said. The hard working blue collar people are underpaid and underappreciated. As you pointed out, one used to be able to reach The American Dream (house, car, kids, college for the kids, food, electric, family vacations, etc.) on a blue collar check, and now some working people can’t even afford electricity or rent (read “Looking Up at the Bottom Line”).

  • already gone

It has been a while since I last posted a comment on this site. I am currently working a fulltime day job and a part time at night so I can speed up on my prepping. One of everything is alright but two is better. With all this chaos going on in Egypt, Syria,
Iraq, it seems like the whole middle east is going to hell in a hand basket. And this country is on the same path. And no I would not go on welfare to have a better life because I do not need to or want to as I have the ability and means to get along without it. And I also have not forgot how painful 2008 was, but I survived and came out alive and in okay shape, but it would never have happened without my “rainy day”
funds. Another reason to work a part time job my account needs to be replenished with as much money as I can put into it , Not particularly in the bank either.
so all I can say Michael is be patient, I can hear this countries support timbers groaning and moaning and creaking and from the content of your article I heard a big cracking noise so it should not be to long before the roof caves in and even “Big John” is not going to be able to hold the roof up so everybody else can escape.

I would rather have a job in which I was able to be financially successful and could live a life independent of my mother. However, I am mentally disabled and this disability has a direct effect on what I can do, and the amount I receive from the government is so small that it really doesn’t help me to develop the means towards being independent, either from my mother or the government.

The danger with being dependent on anyone or anything is that there is no guarantee of the supporter being constantly there. They may not support you tomorrow, for whatever reason. When the economy does fall again, which is certain, the first cuts will be to those programs that support the social safety net.

I have a question for Michael. Do you think it’s possible that after the next major downturn that (a.) the recovery will be longer and (b.) the number of dependents on the government will increase signficantly? I think both are probable.

  • DJohn1

The problem is that government is fallible.

Anyone that has worked in sales will tell you that you can work your self to death and starve. Then when you are not looking, the work sometimes falls your way and you make a lot of money in a short time doing very little. It sometimes evens out and sometimes it doesn’t.

There is no relationship between work and money earned in a lot of cases.

The government sets up the rules. But the rules they set up are not fair rules. I blame the Congress for these rules. In their haste to keep working people from taking advantage of the welfare role benefits, they have set up unfair rules that benefit the lazy vs those who work.

So a young woman making $25,000 a year cleaning up bedpans and other assorted nasty things cannot qualify for free medical care. But another young woman that won’t work is on welfare and gets medicaid has more benefits than that working woman cleaning bedpans.

That is the way the rules work or don’t really work to the benefit of rewarding those who make the effort to find a job and pay taxes.

So they teach illegal immigrants to use the welfare system of benefits and leave our own out in the cold.

A man makes a good living all his life. He saves enough money to last his entire retirement. What does it get him. Well it gets him a slap in the face. Because as soon as he has a major illness the government steps in and steals everything he ever earned in his entire life. THEN the government Medicare and Medicaid programs take over.

Another person qualifies for an $800 Social Security check every month. Try living on $800 a month even with section 8 housing. It can be done. But it is difficult to do so. The person gets disabled and loses her apartment. The person is put in an arbitrary nursing home situation and is diagnosed with the beginnings of Alzheimer’s disease. Suddenly she is living in a nursing home with all the smells of such a place, monitored day and night, given medications and completely loses her freedom of choice in how she is going to live. They take her 800 and give her 40 a month. But they pay anywhere from 4,000-8,000 a month for her care. It does not make any kind of sense whatsoever to pay out that kind of money for her care just to make sure she doesn’t get a decent pension at home.
Chances are she is still too intelligent. So they drug her and bring her down where she has to have the care of a nursing home.
This happens every day and more often than I like to think about.
So there is no sense in the way the government distributes money and gives out welfare checks. Or how medicare and medicaid work or fail to do so.
If someone came to me and was willing to give me more money than I ever dreamed about in substantial medical benefits and a moderate amount of money to live on just so I didn’t go to work would I do it? I think I would just so I could enjoy the lifetime that I have left. Bear in mind that many of us are in the last quarter of our lives before illness and other things get in the way and kill all of us. No one is exempt from death.
Would I work and slave towards a goal only to see the government take it away in the last part of my life? Nope. Sure wouldn’t.
I look at those people making the rules and they surely do not do their homework and they surely do not make good game rules for the rest of us.
Twelve young men were in a barracks on the same floor as me. We bunked two to a room. We had a cleanup party every week and an inspection every week. We were Air Force enlisted people.
I came back. My room mate made it. The rest died in places like Vietnam.
SO an AWOL pilot in the Air National Guard got off going to Vietnam because his father was high in the government. That same man became President of this country. How did he reward us? He put income limits on whether or not you can use the VA Health System after the fact that we had earned them. Executive order. Then this is the real reward for working hard and making money. The government takes it away from you.
So I do not blame people for taking advantage of the welfare system as it is written. I do blame government for writing the rules that enables them to do so without regard for them working for a living.

    • GSOB

      Agree.

    • CharlaS

“I look at those people making the rules and they surely do not do their homework ….” I disagree. Those designing these programs have done their homework quite well. The system is designed to milk you and all taxpayers and it is working quite well.

      • DJohn1

If it is a plan it has failed dramatically. The tax payer is becoming extinct along with all the jobs they once did. To have an income tax people have to have taxable income. When you have unemployment and they try to hide the figures of 30-40% which the government says is 7 and 8% the plan has failed. The government hides that only people whose benefits have not run out are counted as unemployed.
The current scheme seems to be to print all the money they need and let us die of inflation as more and more counterfeit money chases fewer and fewer goods.

The article mentions Detroit which is a worst case scenario of the direction virtually every major city in the country heading in. The legitimate unemployment rate is 50% as is the level of functional illiteracy. These people aren’t unemployed they’re unemployable. It would take about 200,000 jobs in Detroit to reduce the unemployment to near 0. That assumes people would take them. If they were minimum wage it”s unlikely most of them would, even if they did magically appear out of nowhere.. Who is the government trying to kid?

  • chris

If you look at it another way the large numbers of people on welfare in the USA and the UK (whether they want to be or not) are simply one way for the governing parties to hide away the disastrous effects and failure of their Globalisation policies at the expense of the taxpayer. It is in a way also a redistribution of wealth. The working American and Brit is simply paying for the disastrous outsourcing of jobs which would otherwise probably result in mass rioting. This is why neither the Republicrats or Demopublicons will make any major changes to welfare. To do so would risk making it clear just how badly they have trashed the economy.

  • Tim

If you could stay home and relax all day and actually make more money than you do at your current job, would you do it?

Absolutely not. I’m not even tempted by the thought.

Depends how much you like your present job also. Most jobs these days seem to be full on slave type situations with no appreciation, back stabbing and a dictator of a manager. I imagine there would be a temptation under those circumstances.

  • Rob Kinney

When I was growing up, I remember my parents always saying that people on welfare programs were just too sorry to go out and get a job. I remember one time we had to get on food stamps when my dad lost his job, this was back when the stamps were paper. I remember them being so embarrassed of even having to set foot in the DCBS office, not to mention having to spend them in the store. My mom would always go to the store either really early or late, and would look around her nervously when we got to the line, making sure nobody we knew saw her counting out and handing over the stamps to the cashier. You cant help but notice how this mentality has changed. I see a lot of people proudly announce, “It’s food stamp” when swiping their EBT card so the cashier knows what button to push. It seems the stigma of public assistance is now gone, at least for most anyway.
My point is, nowadays, it’s not simply about being “sorry.” Most of the people using these programs couldn’t go out and get a job if they tried. There are none out there to get, and the ones out there just don’t pay enough to live on anymore.
Also, the government does not “care” about these people like they pretend, they are simply holding them at bay with all these programs, because they know that without them, they will have an uprising on their hands the likes of which they cannot even fathom. They have done all this in self interest, because they are outnumbered and they know it, and now that its all becoming unsustainable, they are ordering bullets and authorizing domestic army involvement because they absolutely know that when the majority of what middle class is left become poor too, that this is going to to get ugly, VERY ugly.

Nobody has bothered to understand the Cato Institute report–which is misleading. They calculated the maximum benefits of EVERY federal anti-poverty
program in which a single parent with two kids could participate,
including things like tax credits for the working poor and supplemental
nutrition and health benefits for pregnant women and young children,
and called it ALL “welfare.” Then they gave a dollar value to all the benefits and that’s how they came up with welfare recipients getting $15 an hour.

Most people on public assistance do not get all these benefits. And most people need that assistance in order to survive. The rest of you people bitching about welfare have spent too much time listening to conservative talk shows–which are never going to tell you the full story.

That is what Hitler’s Germany said. All the disabled got no food. Same with old people. Families divided their food ration so the aged grandparents could eat. The mentally retarded, even the ones who had jobs, were rounded up and never seen again. There has to be a middle ground, but certainly ALL able bodied people should work. My chiropractor employees a computer tech who is in a wheelchair. Ask him if he is disabled and he will say, “NO, I just can’t walk.”

With the national bankruptcy crisis, how long would it be before one is cut loose from such support&? welfare is means tested and yes it is means tested i look into it I rent a room from my x sister inlaw now once I become homeless I will qual and i will qual for section 8 the reason is that I only bring in 1200 in my pension from being a gov worker the rent in LA alone is 900 plus if it were in oklahoma avg rent is 600 and providing I can get a place at that many renters are superficial at will but welfare was desinged to help those income earners not everyone is going to make 40 k plus and not be making that for 10 plus years as more compinaes layoff or reduce wages period
but one day the welfare program will stop due to lack of money and that day is coming or will come at that the biggest mistake is that rosevelt started the walefare program before everyone on this blog was born to include me

  • Oh Sheesh

The question here should be “Whose fault is it?”
Whose fault is it that there are very few good jobs?
Whose fault is it that the jobs that are available are low-wage and/or part-time?
Whose fault is it that paychecks are so low?
Whose fault is it that prices for food, energy and good are so high?
If you said “Obama”, you’re an idiot.
Fact of the matter is, both government AND the corporate sector are to blame. And by government, I mean both democrats and republicans.
Saying that Obama is the reason for a bad economy is like saying Hitler was the reason for World War 2….it’s very myopic and uneducated.

    • guest

I agree. The thing is, it’s not an accident. All of what has happened wasn’t an accident.

  • ConcernedAmerican

Nothing is free. I think people have been pushed into poverty purposely because of what Kissinger said: “He who controls the food controls the man.”

I do think we need to help those in need. I think it is awful that we have people sleeping in the streets in the USA. Yet, there are empty homes with overgrown yards. There are blighted buildings that we could teach the homeless to remodel and then give them a condo/apartment in the building they helped to rebuild and remodel. Instead of helping people, society prefers to watch empty buildings rot while they look down on those that have fallen on hard times.

I wonder if some of the people that abuse the welfare system figure they are doing no worse than the 1%, since many wealthy people do no actual work but get rich sitting around watching others work. I have heard that the USA needs immigrants to do the jobs Americans don’t want to do because we are all so fat and lazy. Yet, who made Americans fat by adding GMO foods into our food sources? A study has shown that Americans work more than any other industrialized country, so how are we lazy? So, when do we have time to exercise? Some other countries get 3 months paid leave per year, thereby making a healthy lifestyle more achievable. Who feels like getting on a treadmill after working 2 jobs and 15 hours per day? Besides, who can afford electricity to power the treadmill?

I think Americans have done the math. Why go pick crops in the field for minimum wage when hard work like that will come with medical costs, thereby actually costing the employee money to work. Also, with gas prices, a minimum wage check would barely cover gas if one had a 20 minute commute. I think some Americans are tired of working so hard for so little while watching business owners and the 1% get rich and live the good life off of someone else’s sweat and back.

Utah does make welfare recipients that are medically capable of working take classes in English if needed. And if they have no trade skill, they require a trades class that takes about 3 months to 12 months – so long as the class leads to a job.

I agree that most welfare recipients can be gainfully employed. The welfare that pays similar to a living wage should be reserved for the 14% of those recipients that medically have no ability to care for themselves.

And, if those who can’t support themselves have family or group with caregivers, then I also think that family or unit should get a Zoning waiver to raise small livestock and as much of their food as possible on their property – owned or rented (so long as the landlord is cool with it). They should also have the restrictions lifted to produce their own energy via generators, windmills, or solar so long as they can pay for it themselves – not state subsidized; just the state backs off.

Self-reliance is a God-given right – state should back off from it where needed.

In Florida a single mother with 2 kids get 306.00/month and about 350.00 in SNAP. She first have to seek child support from the fathers of the kids. The only way they can get any benefit, if the father is in jail, dead or nowhere to be found. They are also required to work, go to school and take up some form of training… The children will be put in to a free daycare and after school care.

seriously though, in all defense of low payed workers, a lot of people work very hard for miniscule wages, and most of them take a lot of heat from upper management on their jobs, moral is poor in a lot of these low paying companies due to such disparities. Sometimes it’s just not worth it to work till you drop, so if you do find it possible to collect unemployment instead of working like a mule, then use your unemployment benefits wisely, such as a start up business like yours Michael, in other words work at something you enjoy, not just a job.

No, and I have action to back up my integrity. A daughter got pregnant early. Those who did not reject her for NOT having an abortion and others suggested ‘free’ public housing. NOPE. Others suggested she say she was renting from her family to get free college. NOPE. Some said she should get free welfare and food stamps because she was a young single mom. NOPE. WE TAKE CARE OF OUR OWN and don’t want the government ‘helping’ us. They forced a public health nurse on us for a few months until the nurse saw the level of care both mother and child were receiving and said, “I can see you really don’t need my help,” and LEFT us alone. NOPE. No government handouts. Thanks but NO THANKS!

  • davidmpark

I’d like to go off on another tirade…

First off, these programs should be for the truly needy – those who literally cannot work to support themselves for medically proven reasons. If you can work, and refuse to for the sake of being a bum and freeloader, then those people should be taken off the rolls and FINED for accepting public funds under false pretenses; and the agencies do investigate those kinds of people.

Second, these programs are too far gone. Too much abuse of the system has been done and they won’t be around for long – they’re insolvent. That’s why I’m not sleeping at night; just too worried about her medical and my family’s well being. I’ve done everything I can, and it’s never enough! I’ve gone so far as to get the pharmaceutical manufacturing formulas and processes for her medications… and they are WAY above my skill level right now. :(

If the gov’s want to actually help, if they are really set on getting this economy on it’s feet and cover all the vulnerable adults in this country and ensure all children a good childhood – they would’ve done it. They have the answers and don’t want to do it. That’s why this is a genuine collapse. The previous problems caused by progressive Republicans and Democrats compounded and are too much for us to handle.

The only thing the gov’s can do to help right now is to scale back to Zoning and other restrictive regulations to allow people to use personal industry that will buffer the stings and bruises from this collapse. That’s the only thing I can think of to give people a chance when austerity vamps up.

I wish I had answers – I don’t have many left that will work. People will die; there’s no avoiding it. I’ve done my best for my family and it doesn’t seem enough.

The scripture I try to live my life by:

    1 Th 4:11-12

11 and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we told you, 12 so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.

I worked my first paying job at 15 years old working football games at my high school. I went from there to a paper route then on to the NAVY, retried and worked at the shipyard until layed off, manager at Godfathers pizza. My wife then got very sick and for the next 5 years I worked two or three part time jobs at any given time and donated plasma twice a week just to make ends meet then on to Warehouse Manager, DHL Driver, Went back to school got a degree in computer science which is the field I still am lucky enough to have a job in now. I get 10% disability for my knees from the VA. I could get more is I push it by going to DAV but I would rather work instead of relying on the Government to take care of me.

In a word – no. Even if I was making more money being on welfare than working, I’d drop food stamps. At least you can eventually get a raise when you’re working. Food stamps and other assistance are a short-term solution for people who have NO job and NO other options available.

When you’re on food stamps, or any other form of welfare, your job skills aren’t improving, and your skill set isn’t improving. You’re getting “free” benefits (which are not really free because you who are working, are helping to pay for it with your taxes). However, your knowledge of certain categories on the “Jeopardy!” game show is bound to increase as you sit at home chomping down your lobster in butter sauce…..

As soon as I can get gainful employment, I’m getting off of food stamps. It may be a “SNAP” for some people, but for me it’s humiliating.

  • Mondobeyondo

There was a story, about a couple weeks ago, about some guy in California who spends his days surfing and hanging out, and he’s getting $200 a month in SNAP benefits. He uses it to buy lobster and sushi, and pretty much anything else that’s edible that he can indulge in. (You cannot buy alcohol or tobacco products with a food stamp card. Bummer, dude!)

He isn’t even trying to find a job. He spends the night at friends’ houses. Basically being a first-class Leech.

    Such people make me sick.

It’s an absolute disgrace that we have a welfare system. If you can’t make it on yourown, or if you were too stupid not to be born to rich people, you should do the decent thing and commit suicide.
Your loss will improve the stock

Once again, white people are complaining about food stamps when they are the ones that created it in the first place. White people are to blame. Sad white people will never let food stamps to end in order to maintain white supremacy over other races of people.

Please post on how to get on this gravy train.

  • jdp

Absolutely, the system has done nothing but take from us.

  • ConcernedAmerican

This is just evidence of a broken public school system. This is why there should be freedom in education where everyone picks the education path in which they learn best. The Prussian school system and degree requirememts (like making an English major take Math classes) which are currently in place in the US is not working for everyone (as evidenced by the drop out rate). Not everyone learns the same way since people are individuals, not robots.

    But don’t laugh at Detroit.

No, sorry, I have to laugh at Detroit.

  • Indiana Minuteman

I think the important thing to do now is finish preparing for the collapse as best as we can and work together to hasten the demise of the current system. It must be cast aside so the recovery can begin! The longer we defer the day we take our medicine as a nation, we worse it will be.

  • Bruce

The problem is NOT social programs. The problem is the abuse of soial programs. Programs should be there to feed the hungry NOT the lazy. Unemployment should be paid ot according to credits paid in. Like Social Security.
If a man worked 30 years and then got laid off he should get more than the kid who got laid off from his first job after 15 weeks of work.

  • mtvet

hell no i would not do it. money is just that, money. it is not what drives me in this world. farrrrrr too many americans live for money and little else. whatever happened to using your skills to make lives better for others?? yes, i expect to be paid for doing so, but what good am i doing society by sitting on the couch eating a block of govt cheese? where the heck has american pride gone??

  • 2Gary2

this simply shows how pathetically low the minimum wage is.

  • Jeanette Ferree

I went to work for 9.00 an hour as a supplement to husbands wages to stay off food stamps. Since he has been laid off for nearly a year doing odd jobs here and there. If it hadn’t of been for me working we would of gone under fast. Thank God for that 9.00 an hour job. Keeping us out of the system is worth it.

Congress the senate etc. These are All Welfare recipients. They do little to nothing for their pay. Everything’s handed to them.1/2-3/4 of the day is spent taking breaks. They are simply the highest paid welfare recipients in the country. They are owned by corporate america through kickbacks and favors to do their bidding. Americans should be appalled at what these lazy fat cats dont do for their welfare check……..
